Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Skeletal muscle is a metabolically active tissue whose structural and functional integrity depends on the balance between protein synthesis and degradation, mitochondrial metabolism and cell regeneration. Under physiological conditions, various stimuli, including physical exercise, nutritional status and signals from other tissues, modulate these processes, preserving muscle mass, contractile capacity and adaptive plasticity. In this context, the gut-muscle axis and the gut microbiota emerge as relevant systemic regulators, influencing energy metabolism, inflammatory processes and the adaptive capacity of muscle tissue.

However, with aging, the progressive dysregulation of these mechanisms compromises muscle function, promoting atrophy, sarcopenia and the accumulation of senescent cells. Alterations in the tissue microenvironment, chronic inflammation and changes in inter-organ crosstalk further contribute to functional decline, reducing muscle adaptive plasticity and body homeostasis. Undoubtedly, understanding the molecular and cellular basis of these processes is essential for identifying intervention strategies aimed at preserving muscle function and promoting healthy aging.

This Special Issue, Skeletal Muscle Physiology in Health and Aging, aims to collect contributions that explore the mechanisms underlying muscle physiology in both healthy conditions and during aging, including original articles and reviews focused on the physiological adaptations of skeletal muscle, nutritional modulation, the role of the gut microbiota, cellular senescence and inter-organ communication.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
