Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Embodied artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are fast-growing, transformative fields that bridge physically interactive systems and adaptive intelligent computing, enabling direct engagement with complex, dynamic, and unstructured biological environments. Within bioengineering, this integration breaks down traditional disciplinary boundaries across scales, modalities, and application areas, bringing both fundamental research challenges and unprecedented transformative opportunities. The ability of a physically embodied system to perceive, reason about, and act on living or life-like systems inherently demands cross-cutting innovation spanning computing, mechanics, biology, and medicine.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive, inclusive, and open academic forum for all work at the intersection of embodied AI, robotics, and bioengineering in the broadest possible sense. We do not restrict submissions to specific application scenarios, industries, or technical routes; our core focus is any work that links embodied intelligent systems with biological systems, across all relevant disciplines and use cases. We welcome a full spectrum of article types, including but not limited to original research papers, comprehensive review articles, methodology papers, short communications, perspective articles, and real-world case studies. We invite submissions across all relevant topics, including but not limited to the design and control of robotic architectures for biological and biomedical contexts; core embodied AI algorithms for biological applications; image processing, computer vision, vision-language-action (VLA) models, and multi-modal perception frameworks that adapt to biological variability and uncertainty; theoretical and computational models of embodied interaction with living matter across molecular to macroscopic scales; bio-hybrid, bio-integrated, and life-like system development; and translational applications in clinical medicine, synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, and beyond. All methodological approaches, from theoretical analysis and computational simulation to experimental validation and translational research, are equally welcome.

The core objective of this collection is to consolidate cutting-edge advances, advance foundational understanding, and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration in this rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field. We aim to build a landmark, accessible reference for diverse research communities spanning robotics, AI, bioengineering, medicine, and the life sciences, and to accelerate the translation of fundamental research into real-world solutions that advance human health and biological innovation.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
