Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to showcase recent advances in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) across biomaterials, biomedical engineering, and bioengineering. Consistent with the scope of Bioengineering, it will feature innovative research on AI-assisted biomaterial design, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, medical devices, biosensors, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, digital health, and bioprocess optimization. Topics of interest include predictive modeling, data-driven material discovery, intelligent manufacturing, computational biology, personalized healthcare, and explainable AI. This Special Issue seeks interdisciplinary contributions that bridge engineering, biology, and data science to accelerate biomedical innovation and clinical translation.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are rapidly reshaping bioengineering and biomaterials research by enabling data-driven discovery, predictive modeling, and intelligent decision-making across the biomedical sciences. This Special Issue aims to showcase recent advances in the application of AI and ML to biomaterials, biomedical engineering, and bioengineering. Consistent with the scope of Bioengineering, it will feature innovative research on AI-assisted biomaterial design, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, medical devices, biosensors, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, digital health, and bioprocess optimization.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions that demonstrate how AI can accelerate material discovery, enhance the understanding of complex biological systems, improve device performance, optimize manufacturing processes, and support personalized healthcare. Topics of interest include predictive modeling, data-driven material development, intelligent manufacturing, computational biology, digital twins, precision medicine, and explainable and trustworthy AI. Both methodological advances and application-focused studies are encouraged.

By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers in engineering, biology, medicine, and data science, this Special Issue seeks to highlight transformative AI-enabled technologies that address current biomedical challenges and accelerate innovation, clinical translation, and real-world impact in healthcare and biotechnology.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
