Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The growing demand for sustainable manufacturing has stimulated increasing interest in the use of microbial cell factories for the production of fuels, chemicals, materials, food ingredients, pharmaceuticals, and other value-added bioproducts. Through advances in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, systems biology, and bioprocess engineering, microorganisms can be engineered to efficiently convert renewable resources into a wide range of biochemicals. However, important challenges remain in improving product yield, titer, and productivity, enhancing substrate utilization and cellular robustness, and translating laboratory-scale processes into industrial applications.
This Special Issue, entitled “Engineering Microbial Cell Factories for Sustainable Biochemical Production”, aims to present recent progress in the development and optimization of microbial production systems for sustainable biochemical manufacturing. We welcome original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and communications covering both fundamental studies and applied developments in this field.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Metabolic pathway engineering for biochemical production;
- Synthetic biology approaches for strain construction and regulation;
- Engineering of microbial hosts and non-conventional microorganisms;
- Enzyme engineering and optimization of biosynthetic pathways;
- Utilization of renewable, waste-derived, and alternative carbon feedstocks;
- Systems-level analysis and rational strain optimization;
- Improvement of cellular tolerance, robustness, yield, titer, and productivity;
- Fermentation process optimization, scale-up, and downstream processing.
Through this Special Issue, we hope to bring together advances in microbial strain engineering and bioprocess development and to promote the translation of microbial cell factories toward efficient, scalable, and sustainable biochemical production.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
