Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Building upon the previous edition, this Special Issue explores the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial and Bioartificial Organs (ABOs). While traditional bioengineering has paved the way for functional organ replacement, a new transformative era has started, where the “artificial organ” is evolving from a static medical device into an integrated therapeutic platform. As a result, the development of next-generation ABOs now relies on the combined contributions of multiple disciplines: mechanics, electronics, chemical engineering, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biology, and artificial intelligence.
In this context, this Special Issue is particularly focused on multidisciplinary research that addresses the shift towards patient-specific devices and the development of portable, decentralized systems designed to enhance global accessibility and continuity of care.
This Special Issue will accept contributions (both original articles and reviews) mainly centered on the following topics:
- Mathematical models for the design and optimization of ABOs;
- Bioreactors and cell culture for bioartificial organs;
- Artificial Intelligence applied to ABOs;
- Biomaterial and tissue engineering for ABOs;
- Recent developments on portable ABOs.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
