Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the rapid advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, and medical robotics has profoundly transformed the clinical landscape of medical ultrasound. From image acquisition and automated interpretation to precise measurement and interventional guidance, intelligent systems are significantly enhancing diagnostic accuracy, operational consistency, and workflow efficiency. These innovations are accelerating the evolution of ultrasound from a traditionally experience-driven modality to a data-driven diagnostic paradigm.

AI-powered ultrasound image analysis has demonstrated remarkable potential in real-time decision support, anatomical modeling, lesion detection, and robot-assisted interventions, particularly in resource-constrained settings. These advances are opening new avenues for primary care and telemedicine applications. Meanwhile, challenges and opportunities remain in areas such as multimodal data integration, intelligent perception and decision-making frameworks, and the pursuit of personalized ultrasound diagnostics.

This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and practical innovations in intelligent ultrasound imaging, with a focus on its biomedical applications across disease screening, precision medicine, robotic intervention, and clinical workflow optimization. We invite the submission of high-quality original research articles and comprehensive reviews on topics including (but not limited to) the following areas:

  • Deep learning-based methods for ultrasound image segmentation, recognition, and classification;
  • Multimodal data fusion and analysis (e.g., ultrasound with CT/MRI);
  • Intelligent navigation and ultrasound-guided robotic systems;
  • Explainable AI in ultrasound diagnostics and clinical validation;
  • Large-scale annotation techniques and data augmentation strategies for ultrasound imaging;
  • Lightweight algorithm design for deployment on edge devices or in low-resource environments;
  • Clinical applications of intelligent ultrasound in obstetrics, cardiology, abdominal imaging, pulmonology, and more.

This Special Issue seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and promote the integration of intelligent algorithms with clinical practice, ultimately advancing the development of more efficient, accessible, and accurate ultrasound-based diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
