Dear Colleagues,
Microbial biotransformation has emerged as a powerful and sustainable approach for converting inexpensive substrates into value-added products. Microorganisms can catalyze highly specific chemical reactions under mild conditions, offering environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional chemical processes. Advances in molecular biology, systems biotechnology, metabolic engineering, and bioprocess optimization have significantly expanded the scope and efficiency of microbial biotransformation for industrial, environmental, agricultural, and pharmaceutical applications.
This Special Issue, “Biotransformation by Microbes: Mechanisms, Optimization, and Applications,” aims to provide a comprehensive platform for disseminating recent advances in the field. The issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, and case studies addressing the fundamental mechanisms underlying microbial biotransformation, including enzyme discovery, metabolic pathways, and microbial interactions. Particular emphasis is placed on innovative strategies to enhance biotransformation efficiency through strain improvement, genetic engineering, process optimization, bioreactor design, and computational approaches.
The Special Issue also highlights the practical applications of microbial biotransformation in the production of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, biofuels, fine chemicals, biodegradable materials, and high-value natural products, as well as its role in environmental remediation and waste valorization. Contributions exploring emerging technologies such as synthetic biology, omics-based analyses, artificial intelligence-assisted process optimization, and integrated biorefinery concepts are especially encouraged.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
