Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Atmospheric pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges worldwide, with significant implications for human health, ecosystem integrity, climate forcing, and socio-economic development. Rapid urbanization, industrial activities, energy production, transportation, and agricultural practices continue to shape complex emission patterns, while emerging contaminants and secondary pollutants further complicate the atmospheric system. Addressing these challenges requires integrated approaches that combine advanced monitoring technologies, robust assessment methodologies, and effective mitigation strategies within a broader sustainability and circular economy framework.

Recent advances in sensor technologies, remote sensing platforms, low-cost monitoring networks, atmospheric modeling, and data analytics have substantially improved our capacity to characterize pollutant sources, transformation processes, transport pathways, and exposure patterns. At the same time, circular technologies—aimed at waste valorization, resource recovery, cleaner production, and low-emission processes—offer promising pathways to reduce atmospheric emissions at their origin. Bridging atmospheric science with circular economy principles is essential to move from reactive pollution control toward preventive, system-level solutions.

This Special Issue aims to publish high-quality research articles, reviews, and case studies that address the monitoring, assessment, and mitigation of atmospheric pollution through integrated and interdisciplinary approaches. Contributions that connect environmental diagnostics with technological innovation and circular strategies are particularly encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Advanced monitoring techniques for atmospheric pollutants (ground-based, mobile, satellite, and sensor networks).
  • Source apportionment and emission characterization.
  • Atmospheric chemical processes and secondary pollutant formation.
  • Air quality modeling and forecasting.
  • Exposure assessment and health impact analysis.
  • Data-driven approaches, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for air quality management.
  • Mitigation technologies for gaseous pollutants and particulate matter.
  • Circular technologies for emission reduction, waste-to-energy, and resource recovery.
  • Industrial symbiosis and low-emission production systems.
  • Integration of air pollution control strategies within circular economy frameworks.
  • Policy-oriented tools and decision-support systems for sustainable air quality management.

By fostering dialogue between atmospheric scientists, engineers, technologists, and policy experts, this Special Issue seeks to advance integrated solutions that not only monitor and assess atmospheric pollution but also actively contribute to its mitigation through circular and sustainable technological innovation.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
