Industry 4.0 Technologies to Support the Energy Transition

Dear Colleagues,

The global imperative to tackle climate change has propelled the energy sector into an era of transformation, in which traditional paradigms are being remodelled by the convergence of Industry 4.0 technologies and sustainable practices. This Special Issue aism to explore the synergies between Industry 4.0 and the energy transition, focusing on key themes such as hydrogen, carbon capture, storage and utilization (CCSU), energy efficiency, electrification and renewable sources. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising vector for energy storage and distribution, offering a clean alternative to fossil fuels. Meanwhile, advances in carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies have the potential to mitigate the emissions generated by industrial processes and energy production, facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Energy efficiency measures, driven by IoT sensors, AI algorithms and data analysis, can optimize the use of resources and minimize waste throughout the energy value chain. Electrification is emerging as a cornerstone of the transition, with smart grids and decentralized energy systems that enable the integration of renewable sources such as solar and wind being developed. Through interdisciplinary research and innovative applications, this Special Issue aims to elucidate the transformative potential of Industry 4.0 in accelerating the shift towards a sustainable future, promoting resilience and mitigating climate risks.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
