Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The fields of soil mechanics and rock mechanics are undergoing a significant transformation driven by advances in experimental techniques, numerical modelling, artificial intelligence, and the increasing demand for sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Modern geotechnical engineering projects, including underground construction, transportation networks, energy infrastructure, mining operations, and climate adaptation works, require a deeper understanding of the coupled behaviour of soils and rocks under complex mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, and environmental conditions.

This Special Issue aims to showcase recent advances and emerging trends in both soil and rock mechanics, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches that bridge the traditional boundaries between these fields. Contributions are invited on topics such as advanced laboratory and in situ characterization methods, constitutive modelling, multi-physics coupling, machine learning applications, digital twins, reliability and risk assessment, numerical and hybrid modelling techniques, sustainability in geotechnical engineering, energy geostructures, geoenvironmental solutions, instability mechanisms, and the monitoring and performance assessment of natural and engineered geomaterials.

Review papers on current challenges and future directions in geomechanics are also welcome, as are case studies of innovative applications in practice. By bringing together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry, this collection aims to provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art developments that will shape the next generation of geotechnical engineering solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
