Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Women’s participation in sport has increased substantially over recent decades, yet female athletes remain markedly underrepresented in sports science research. Much of the existing evidence continues to be extrapolated from studies conducted predominantly in men, assuming that findings are universally applicable despite well-established biological and physiological differences between the sexes. This evidence gap limits the development of robust, evidence-based strategies to optimize female athlete health, participation, performance, injury prevention, well-being, and long-term athletic development.
This Special Issue aims to advance high-quality research dedicated specifically to women and girls in sport. Rather than simply increasing the representation of female participants in sports science research, there is a pressing need to develop research questions specifically designed to investigate female physiology and its interaction with exercise, training, recovery, health, and performance across the lifespan. We encourage studies that advance the understanding of female athlete health by addressing female-specific biological characteristics and their implications for exercise prescription, individualized training, athletic performance, injury prevention, recovery, physical and mental well-being, health outcomes, and career longevity.
We welcome original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, methodological papers, and clinical investigations covering topics including, but not limited to, exercise physiology, neuromuscular adaptations, endocrine responses, menstrual cycle physiology, hormonal contraceptive use, pregnancy and postpartum return to sport, menopause and healthy aging in athletes, energy availability, bone health, nutrition, recovery strategies, biomechanics, performance assessment, wearable technologies, injury mechanisms, female-specific health conditions, and personalized training interventions. Studies employing innovative methodologies, longitudinal designs, precision exercise medicine, digital health technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and multidisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged.
By bringing together research from diverse disciplines, this Special Issue seeks to improve our understanding of female athlete health, promote evidence-based practice, and contribute to the development of more effective, individualized strategies that support women’s health, performance, well-being, and participation in sport at all levels.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue
- Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
- Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
- Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
- External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
- Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
