Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The advancement of digital technologies, coupled with increasing demands for sustainability, resilience, and efficiency, has driven a profound transformation in how infrastructure is planned, built, operated, and decommissioned. In this context, the concept of Smart Infrastructure emerges as a fundamental pillar to support decision-making and the intelligent management of critical assets necessary for urban development. However, despite their great potential, the implementation of smart solutions still faces technical, economic, regulatory, and social challenges, which require interdisciplinary approaches and continuous innovation.
This Special Isuue aims to bring together high-quality scientific contributions that explore both technological advances and emerging challenges related to smart infrastructures. The edition seeks to promote the dissemination of theoretical, methodological, and applied research, as well as case studies and practical experiences, that contribute to advancing the state of the art on the subject.
Contributions are welcome from academics, practitioners, and students from any discipline or country, and multidisciplinary contributions are encouraged. Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Sensing technologies, real-time data acquisition, and analysis;
- Digital twins applied to civil, urban, and industrial infrastructures;
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for infrastructure management, operation, and maintenance;
- Cyber-physical systems and automation in critical infrastructures;
- Data analysis, big data, and decision support;
- Predictive maintenance and intelligent asset management;
- Resilient infrastructures and adaptation to climate change;
- Sustainability, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction;
- Smart cities and integration of urban infrastructures;
- Smart mobility and advanced transportation systems;
- Security, reliability, and cybersecurity of infrastructures;
- Economic, regulatory, and social aspects in the implementation of smart infrastructures;
- Infrastructure safety.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
