Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Life cycle assessment (LCA) has evolved from a research-oriented analytical tool into a critical decision-support framework for driving climate neutrality, resource efficiency and circular economy transitions. As industries, policymakers and researchers face increasingly complex environmental challenges, there is a growing demand for applied LCA methodologies that bridge scientific innovation with real-world implementation. This Special Issue in Applied Sciences focuses on next-generation LCA methodologies, practical decision support for policy and industry, and the role of LCA in accelerating sustainable transitions.

We welcome submissions that explore interdisciplinary and engineering-focused applications of LCA, with particular interest in emerging directions such as dynamic and prospective LCA, AI-enabled and data-driven assessment models, integration with planetary boundary frameworks and alignment with recent sustainability regulations (e.g., EU CSRD, ESPR). Contributions demonstrating innovative methodologies, standardized impact assessments, sector-specific applications and life cycle integration with costing (LCC) or social assessment (S-LCA) are strongly encouraged.

This collection aims to consolidate cutting-edge advancements in applied LCA and provide actionable insights for optimizing industrial processes, informing evidence-based policy and advancing net-zero strategies. We welcome original research articles, reviews, methodological developments and applied case studies that translate rigorous LCA practices into tangible solutions for academia and industry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
