Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Parallel computing involves dividing a computational problem into discrete parts that can be solved concurrently by multiple processors or cores within a single machine. This approach leverages the power of multi-core architectures to perform many calculations simultaneously, dramatically speeding up processing times for compute-intensive tasks.

Distributed computing, on the other hand, spans multiple machines, often in geographically dispersed locations. It harnesses a network of interconnected computers that work together as a single system to tackle large problems by distributing tasks and coordinating their workflow. This methodology is the backbone of cloud computing, grid computing, and the vast array of services available through the internet.

The convergence of parallel and distributed computing has given rise to hybrid systems that combine the scalability of distributed systems with the processing power of parallel architectures, catering to the needs of big data and complex applications like machine learning, real-time analytics, and simulation modeling.

This Special Issue on "Novel Insights into Parallel and Distributed Computing" seeks to explore the latest advancements, innovative methodologies, and emerging challenges in the field of computing, where multiple processing elements may be used simultaneously to solve problems.

The scope of this Special Issue covers a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to:

  1. Parallel computing architectures, including multi-core and many-core systems, GPUs, and FPGAs.
  2. Distributed computing frameworks and systems, such as cloud computing, edge computing, and Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures.
  3. Scalable algorithms and applications for big data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in parallel and distributed environments.
  4. Performance optimization techniques, including task scheduling, load balancing, and resource management in parallel and distributed systems.
  5. Advances in parallel programming models, languages, compilers, and runtime systems.
  6. Communication and networking protocols designed for efficient data exchange in distributed computing settings.
  7. Theoretical foundations and models for understanding the limits and potential of parallel and distributed computation.
  8. Case studies and real-world applications of parallel and distributed computing in various domains such as scientific computing, bioinformatics, finance, and engineering.

The Special Issue aims to promote interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations that can propel the field forward, addressing both its theoretical and practical aspects. Submissions are encouraged to highlight innovative approaches and discuss the implications of parallel and distributed computing for future technology developments.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
