Dear Colleagues,
The global burden of bacterial infections and the continued emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remain major challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. Optimizing antibiotic therapy through effective antimicrobial stewardship, improved treatment strategies, and innovative therapeutic approaches is essential to ensure appropriate antimicrobial use and improve patient outcomes.
Long-acting antibiotics represent an important advancement in antimicrobial therapy by providing sustained drug exposure and maintaining effective concentrations over extended periods. Compared with conventional antibiotic regimens requiring frequent administration, long-acting formulations offer potential benefits, including improved treatment adherence, reduced healthcare resource utilization, enhanced outpatient management, and greater flexibility in the treatment of complex bacterial infections.
In recent years, several long-acting antimicrobial agents have been introduced into clinical practice, expanding therapeutic options for a range of infectious diseases. Their applications have been explored particularly in skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, infective endocarditis, and other infections requiring prolonged antimicrobial therapy. However, important clinical questions remain regarding appropriate patient selection, optimal dosing strategies, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) considerations, safety profiles, real-world effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and their integration into antimicrobial stewardship programs.
This Special Issue, entitled “Long-Acting Antibiotics and Their Use in Clinical Practice,” aims to highlight recent advances in the development, evaluation, and clinical implementation of long-acting antibiotics. We invite researchers and clinicians to contribute original research articles, reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and perspectives addressing the pharmacology, clinical efficacy, safety, resistance considerations, and future applications of long-acting antimicrobial therapies.
By bringing together current evidence and emerging perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to advance our understanding of the role of long-acting antibiotics in contemporary infectious disease management and to promote evidence-based approaches for optimizing antimicrobial therapy and stewardship.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
