Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Implantable medical devices have revolutionized modern medicine by improving patient outcomes and quality of life. However, the increased use of devices such as catheters, prosthetic joints, cardiovascular implants, and orthopedic hardware has led to a corresponding rise in device-associated infections. A major contributor to these infections is the formation of microbial biofilms—complex communities of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and are embedded in a protective extracellular matrix. Biofilms confer a heightened resistance to antibiotics and host immune responses, rendering conventional antimicrobial therapies largely ineffective and posing serious challenges for clinicians worldwide.
This Special Issue aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of biofilms in the context of medical device infections. Topics include the molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation, pathogen identification, advances in diagnostic techniques, and the development of innovative preventive and therapeutic strategies. Special emphasis will be placed on antimicrobial coatings, novel materials, emerging technologies such as bacteriophage therapy, and strategies targeting biofilm dispersal and quorum sensing.
By gathering cutting-edge research and expert reviews, this issue seeks to provide valuable insights into understanding and combating biofilm-associated infections. Our goal is to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and stimulate new ideas that can lead to more effective interventions and improved patient care in the field of implantable medical devices.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Antibiotics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
