Cover Story: Health checks lead to beneficial health outcomes in adults with intellectual disability, but their effect on people with Down syndrome was less certain. To investigate whether receiving a health check at the primary care level decreased unmet health needs for people with Down syndrome, an Australian research team pooled data from three previously conducted randomized trials. The trials used the same tools, but enrolled different populations: adults in 24-hour supported accommodation, adults in private dwellings and adolescents living with their parents. A one-off health check was compared with usual care. Among 216 participants, health actions were more likely to occur for those allocated to receive health checks, including increased hearing, vision and thyroid testing, and weight recording.
