Cover Story: The fields essential for the sustainable use of natural resources—agriculture, forestry, biodiversity monitoring, and water management—pose multiple challenges for the 5G and beyond mobile networks, commonly envisioned as a driver of business and societal transformation towards the vision of "Industry 4.0". A thorough investigation and understanding of the conditions and context of these fields, identification of their needs, use cases, and requirements for communication services, and finally, a confrontation of the network mechanisms and possibilities available today and in the future are the vital steps that will allow these services to emerge. This article discusses the above-mentioned issues, identifies existing gaps, and presents directions for further work to provide communication support to these fields and business opportunities for mobile network operators.
