Cover Story: Understanding hormonal and molecular changes from preterm to near-term is key to assessing how pregnancy complications affect fetal heart development and long-term cardiovascular risk. The correlation between cortisol and T3 in the near-term heart highlights the role of GC signalling in preparing for postnatal life. A decline in protein expression of GRs alongside markers of cardiac proliferative capacity suggests a shift toward cardiac maturation. Increased mitochondrial content/OXPHOS and changes in glucose transporters indicate a metabolic transition from glycolysis to more efficient OXPHOS. These data provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying cardiac adaptation, which may have implications for understanding developmental programming and the risk of CVD later in life.
