Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I found the review very interesting and up to day. The rice is a crop with high food market interest all over the world, not only in Europe. The  DNA-based tools to certify authenticity of rice varieties are key methods to keep the market clean and safe for buyers and consumers. It is also important for scientists focusing on rice research and experiments. The paper presents basic knowledge on DNA based methods for rice authentication based on newest scientific literature. The main drawback of the paper is lack of Figures an Tables that will help readers to understand and follow the text. I advise to supplement the text with figures for rice production/consumption as well as in case of separate analytical methods presented in the text. Additionally in my opinion the Figure 1 is rather useless. I see no reason to present such a data. I believe paper also needs some language polish done by some English native speaker. It will help readers to follow the main idea of the paper as well as makes paper more readable.

According to this I have to designate the paper as needed minor revision.

1.From the perspective of food safety, is the mixture of new rice and old rice also a kind of food adulteration? Kit can detect the variety, but cannot detect the new and old. Moreover, the old rice will have food safety problems if the quality deteriorates under long-term storage?

2.DNA-based tools to certify authenticity of rice varieties. When the varieties are from the same source, but the place of origin is different, can DNA-based tools can be used to control the quality of rice?
