There are conspicuous significant psychiatric features in the life of the artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner who was born in 1880. He committed suicide in 1938. The abundant symptoms are subsumed in 4 syndromes: an anxiety depression syndrome, a paranoid syndrome, an addiction and dissexuality. These syndromes show a peak between the 30th and 40th year of life, recede, and then partially show a new peak. His creative powers also peaked in the period before his 40th year of life. Kirchner’s “artistic talent” was thus not constant, but partly paralleled his psychopathology and partly is negatively correlated to his psychopathology. Full article

In the present study an extensive battery of psychometric tests (MWT-B,WIP-GF, SASKA, SPM, LPS [3+4], CFT3 and d2) was administered to a group of 34 schizophrenics and 31 chronic alcoholics. The results were compared with a nonclinical sample and that of patients with major depression and schizoaffective disorder undertaken in a previous study [3]. This battery of tests is recommended as an additional diagnostical aid if the psychiatric diagnosis, related to the case history of the patient, is uncertain. In practice, a combination of CFT3 and d2 is recommended. The total length of these tests should be approximately 30 minutes if the CFT3 is shortened. Full article

Ten patients (6 females and 4 males) suffering from an acute manic episode assessed by the “Echelle d’Intensité Maniaque” (E.I.M. or Manic Intensity Scale) in the context of bipolar disorder (n = 7) or schizoaffective disorder bipolar type (n = 3) (DSM IV and Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies) were treated with valproate as a first line of treatment (plasma level between 50 and 100 mg/l). Six out of ten patients presented a reduction of more than 50% of their initial score for mania after one week and 7 out of 10 patients after 15 days. Valproate was revealed to be efficient and was very well tolerated which favoured good treatment compliance. Only gastro-intestinal side effects as well as transient thrombocytopenia were observed. A resistance factor to valproate was the presence of mood-incongruent psychotic features. Full article

The historical development of psychosocial therapeutic interventions for schizophrenics shows a certain convergence of principles. The common aim is the reconstruction of the disordered ego and the regain of the lost functions of sense of reality, selfgoverning and interpersonal relations.Whereas the principles of a person related and need adapted psychotherapy are known since the 19th century, neither “classical” academic psychiatry nor the traditional mental hospitals did provide them adequately. Thus, alternative “parainstitutional” facilities were developed (like Soteria or Windhorse). Full article
