Cover Story: Snow cover influences the global surface energy balance and, due to its high albedo, exerts a cooling effect on Earth. This research used MODIS data from NASA’s Terra satellite to study the changes in snow cover (observed snow on the ground) from February 2000 to March 2023 using the Mann–Kendall test and univariate differencing analysis. Global annual snow cover (2000–2022) decreased by 5.12% (not including Antarctica or Greenland) at p < 0.05. Regionally, Asia had the greatest net area of decline, followed by Europe. North America had the largest decline relative to its total snow area. South America had the greatest local decline, decreasing 20.60% of its annual snow cover area. Africa, Australia and New Zealand had less than 1% of global annual snow cover. View this paper
