Cover Story: This study investigates occupant safety during vehicle collisions with cluster mailboxes (CMs) using advanced finite element analysis. MASH-compliant vehicles, equipped with airbags, seatbelts, and Hybrid III dummies, were tested across 32 impact scenarios. The analysis evaluated occupant impact velocities (OIVs), ride-down accelerations (ORAs), and head injury criteria (HICs). The simulation results provided insights into occupant risks and identified the primary failure modes of the mailboxes. While CMs sustained structural damage, they met MASH requirements regarding occupant safety. These findings offer critical guidance for designing safer roadside infrastructure. View this paper
