Cover Story: Despite the huge impact that cardiovascular disease has on health worldwide, there remains a paucity of meaningful treatment options in patients that are not amenable to endovascular or surgical intervention. In this study, we undertake a comprehensive review of the current state of research on the extracellular matrix for the treatment of cardiovascular pathologies with a particular emphasis on ischemic heart disease. We discuss in detail the various components of the extracellular matrix and the effect of tissue source material on the effects of the extracellular matrix when used as a treatment for myocardial ischemia. Furthermore, we discuss the current limitations and potential future directions of this field of research. View this paper
