Cover Story: Sports science and training metrics inform athletes on progression toward a competitive goal. New technology can now be harnessed to do the same for racehorses. Here, fitness trackers recorded training metrics in 485 racehorses (3418 training sessions) in Australia. Colts and ‘stayers’ performed better than fillies. Higher speed over the last 600 m of a standardised timed trial in training predicted (P = 0.04) the horses that performed better in races. Combining training metrics with less tangible, experiential factors from racehorse trainers or other personnel will help aid decision-making regarding which horses to place in races and potentially reduce the incidence of poor performance on race day.
