Digital substation technology adhering to the IEC 61850 standard has provided several opportunities and flexibility for the rapid growth and complexity of the present and future electrical grid. The communication infrastructure allows complete interoperability between legacy and modern devices. The emergence of 5G wireless communication and its utilization in substation operation presents significant advantages in terms of cost and scalability, while also introducing challenges. This paper identifies research gaps in the literature and offers valuable insights for future analysis by providing a simulation study using an empirical latency dataset of a 5G network to illustrate three aspects of substation operational challenges: coordination of protection schemes, sequential reception of packet data streams, and time synchronization processes. The findings show a mean latency of 8.5 ms for the 5G network, which is significantly higher than that of a wired Ethernet network. The results also indicate that the high latency and jitter compromise the selectivity of protection schemes. The variability in latency disrupts the sequence of arriving data packets such that the packet buffering and processing delay increases from around 1.5 ms to 11.0 ms and the buffer size would need to increase by 6 to 10 times to handle out-of-sequence packets. Additionally, a time synchronization success rate of 14.3% within a 0.1 ms accuracy range found in this study indicates that the IEEE 1588 protocol is severely affected by the latency fluctuations. With the development of the automotive industry, the performance of commercial vehicle braking systems is crucial for road traffic safety. However, traditional braking systems are no longer able to meet the growing demand for response speed, control accuracy, and adaptability to complex operating conditions. To this end, this article focuses on improving the braking performance of commercial vehicles, designs and develops a new integrated high-response-speed EBS, explains its structure and function, proposes a pressure delay compensation control method for wire-controlled braking systems, establishes relevant models, designs control processes, and conducts braking simulations. Braking experiments are also conducted on a commercial 6 × 4 tractor on different road surfaces. The research results show that the system has good braking response performance under typical working conditions such as low adhesion, high adhesion, and opposite docking. The braking time is short (for example, the initial braking time at 40 km/h on high-adhesion roads is only 2.209 s, and the initial braking time at 50 km/h on opposite roads is 6.68 s), and the braking safety performance is superior, meeting the requirements of relevant standards. The contribution of this study lies in the proposed time delay compensation control method for wire-controlled braking, which effectively solves the problem of low control accuracy caused by time delay in wire-controlled braking systems. The integrated EBS designed integrates multiple functions, improves driving safety and comfort, and provides strong support for the upgrade of commercial vehicle braking technology, with good application prospects. Rapid pavement repair demands materials that combine accelerated strength gains, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and sustainability. However, finding materials or formulations that offer these balances remains a critical challenge. This study systematically evaluates two polymer-modified belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes—CSAP (powdered polymer) and CSA-LLP (liquid polymer admixture)—against a traditional Type III Portland cement (OPC) control under both laboratory and realistic outdoor conditions. Laboratory specimens were tested for fresh properties, early-age and later-age compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, as well as drying shrinkage according to ASTM standards. Outdoor 5 × 4 × 12-inch slabs mimicking typical jointed plain concrete panels (JPCPs), instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges and thermocouples, recorded the strain and temperature at 5 min intervals over 16 weeks, with 24 h wet-burlap curing to replicate field practices. Laboratory findings show that CSA mixes exceeded 3200 psi of compressive strength at 4 h, but cold outdoor casting (~48 °F) delayed the early-age strength development. The CSA-LLP exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage (0.036% at 16 weeks), and outdoor CSA slabs captured the initial ettringite-driven expansion, resulting in a net expansion (+200 µε) rather than contraction. Approximately 80% of the total strain evolved within the first 48 h, driven by autogenous and plastic effects. CSA mixes generated lower peak internal temperatures and reduced thermal strain amplitudes compared to the OPC, improving dimensional stability and mitigating restraint-induced cracking. These results underscore the necessity of field validation for shrinkage compensation mechanisms and highlight the critical roles of the polymer type and curing protocol in optimizing CSA-based repairs for durable, low-carbon pavement rehabilitation. Carrier-based aircraft recovery is a critical and challenging phase in maritime operations due to the turbulent airwake generated by aircraft carriers, which significantly increases the workload of flight control systems and pilots. This study investigates the airwake effects of an aircraft carrier under varying wind direction conditions. A high-fidelity mathematical model combining delayed detached-eddy simulation (DDES) with the overset grid method was developed to analyze key flow characteristics, including upwash, downwash, and lateral recirculation. The model ensures precise control of aircraft speed and trajectory during landing while maintaining numerical stability through rigorous mesh optimization. The results indicate that the minimum lift occurs in the downwash region aft of the deck, marking it as the most hazardous zone during landing. Aircraft above the deck are primarily influenced by ground effects, causing a sudden increase in lift that complicates arresting wire engagement. Additionally, the side force on the aircraft undergoes an abrupt reversal during the approach phase. The dual overset mesh technique effectively captures the coupled motion of the hull and aircraft, revealing higher turbulence intensity along the glideslope and a wider range of lift fluctuations compared to stationary hull conditions. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing carrier-based aircraft recovery procedures, offering more realistic data for simulation training and enhancing pilot preparedness for airwake-induced disturbances. Steel wire ropes used in transport and aerospace applications are critical components whose failure can lead to significant safety, operational, and environmental consequences. Current diagnostic practices based on magnetic rope testing (MRT) often suffer from signal misalignment and subjective interpretation, particularly under varying operational conditions or in polymer-impregnated ropes with delayed damage indicators. This study explores the application of the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm to enhance the reliability of MRT diagnostics. The research involved analyzing long-term MRT recordings of wire ropes used in mining operations, including different scanning resolutions and signal acquisition methods. A mathematical formulation of DTW is provided along with its implementation code in R and Python. The DTW algorithm was applied to synchronize diagnostic signals with their baseline recordings, as recommended by ISO 4309:2017 and EN 12927:2019 standards. Results show that DTW enables robust alignment of time series with slowly varying spectra, thereby improving the comparability and interpretation of MRT data. This approach reduces the risk of unnecessary rope discard and increases the effectiveness of degradation monitoring. The findings suggest that integrating DTW into existing diagnostic protocols can contribute to safer operation, lower maintenance costs, and reduced environmental impact. Full article

5G private mobile networks are becoming a platform for ‘wire-free’ networking for professional applications in smart industry sectors, such as automated warehousing, logistics, autonomous vehicle deployments in campus environments, mining, material processing, and more. It is expected that most of these Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) communication paths will be realized wirelessly, as the advantages of providing flexibility are obvious compared to hard-wired network installations. Unfortunately, the deployment of private 5G networks in smart industries has faced delays due to a combination of high costs, technical challenges, and uncertain returns on investment, which is reflected in troublesome access to fully operational private networks. To obtain insight into occupational exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF) emitted by 5G private mobile networks, an analysis of RF EMF due to different types of 5G equipment was carried out on a real case scenario in the production and logistic (warehouse) industrial sector. A private standalone (SA) 5G network operating at 3.7 GHz in a real industrial environment was numerically modeled and compared with in situ RF EMF measurements. The results show that RF EMF exposure of the workers was far below the existing exposure limits due to the relatively low power (1 W) of indoor 5G base stations in private networks, and thus similar exposure scenarios could also be expected in other deployed 5G networks. In the analyzed RF EMF exposure scenarios, the radio transmitter—so-called ‘radio head’—installation heights were relatively low, and thus the obtained results represent the worst-case scenarios of the workers’ exposure that are to be expected due to private 5G networks in smart industries. Vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology enables electric vehicles (EVs) to supply power to residential loads, offering enhanced energy self-sufficiency and backup capabilities. Accurate voltage regulation is essential in such systems, especially under nonlinear and time-varying load conditions. The control method for three-phase four-wire (3P4W) converters plays a vital role in addressing these challenges. In the control configuration of such systems, the non-ideal proportional-resonant (PR) controller stands out due to its ability to reject periodic disturbances. However, the comprehensive study on the discretization of this controller for digital implementation in 3P4W systems has not been available in the literature to date. This paper presents a comparative study of several discretization methods for non-ideal PR controllers. The continuous-time complete transfer function of the integral term of non-ideal PR controllers is discretized using techniques such as Forward Euler, Backward Euler, Tustin, Zero-Order Hold, and Impulse Invariance. Additionally, the discretization methods based on two discrete integrators for the non-ideal PR controller, such as Forward Euler and Backward Euler, Backward Euler and Backward Euler plus computational delay, and Tustin and Tustin, are also evaluated. In the MATLAB/Simulink platform, through evaluating the performance of the non-ideal PR controllers, which are discretized using the above discretization methods, in controlling the output voltage of the 3P4W converter in the V2H application under nonlinear load scenarios, including substantial and sudden changes in load, the discretization method Backward Euler and Backward Euler plus delay is recommended. Given the significant impact of the initial surface layer of materials on their tribological performance, this study uses a wire–plate reciprocating friction pair to investigate the effects of surface mechanical rolling process on the elastic current-carrying friction performance. The plate specimens were subjected to rolling processing with varying feed rates under different load conditions, using a self-designed current-carrying friction and wear testing machine. The results show that as the feed rate and load increase, the contact resistance varies within the range of 0.0065 Ω to 0.0310 Ω, with a standard deviation ranging from 0.01 Ω to 0.07 Ω, indicating good electrical conductivity. As the feed rate of the surface mechanical rolling increases, the wear rate of the material significantly decreases. Under all test conditions, the material wear marks exhibit plowing wear, and with the increase in surface mechanical rolling feed rate, the occurrence and intensification of adhesive wear are delayed. When the feed rate is 100 μm and the load is 0.025 N, the material wear rate is the lowest, reduced by 63.1% compared to the untreated condition. Full article

Mobile virtual reality (VR) is considered a killer application for future mobile broadband networks. However, for cloud VR, the long content delivery path and time-varying transmission rate from the content provider’s cloud VR server to the users make the quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for VR users very challenging. To this end, in this paper, we design a 360° VR video service system that leverages proactive caching and mobile edge computing (MEC) technologies. Furthermore, we propose a multiuser access control algorithm tailored to the system, based on analytical results of the delay violation probability, which is derived considering the impact of both the multi-hop wired network from the cloud VR server to the MEC server and the wireless network from the MEC server-connected base station (BS) to the users. The proposed access control algorithm aims to maximize the number of served users by exploiting real-time and dynamic network resources, while ensuring that the end-to-end delay violation probability for each accessed user remains within an acceptable limit. Simulation results are presented to analyze the impact of diverse system parameters on both the user access probability and the delay violation probability of the accessed users, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed multiuser access control algorithm. It is observed in the simulation that increasing the computing capacity of the MEC server or the communication bandwidth of the BS is one of the most effective methods to accommodate more users for the system. In the tested scenarios, when the MEC server’s computing capacity (the BS’s bandwidth) increases from 0.8 Tbps (50 MHz) to 3.2 Tbps (150 MHz), the user access probability improves on average by 92.53% (85.49%). This study evaluates the feasibility of 3D-printed polymer composite external fixator (EF) rings as a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel fixators, focusing on hybrid fixators for complex tibial fractures. Mechanical performance was assessed in three stages: (1) evaluating the initial EF–tibia configuration under axial loading and wire pre-tension conditions; (2) analyzing the stiffness evolution and weight-bearing capacity during early healing with progressive callus formation; and (3) optimizing ring designs through numerical analysis to improve structural performance under increased pre-tension. The results showed that, for the metallic EF, the axial displacement under one-leg stance reached 8.41 mm without pre-tension, reducing to 6.83 mm at 500 N pre-tension, though transverse displacement remained significant, suggesting the need for higher wire tension. Callus formation enhanced the load-bearing capacity, as expected. However, excessive displacements persisted under the one-leg stance, indicating that full weight-bearing should be delayed beyond two weeks for a fracture gap of 3 mm. A ring design assessment showed that full-ring configurations with two wires per ring improved performance. The 3D-printed full-ring design made of carbon-fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA-CF) reduced stress by 85% at 500 N pre-tension compared to the initial configuration, remaining within allowable limits. While confirming feasibility, the study highlights the need for geometric refinements to accommodate higher preloads and improve transverse stiffness. Full article

Background/Objectives: Delayed tooth eruption (DTE) is a very challenging clinical situation, and the pathogenesis has been associated with local, systemic, and genetic factors. The aim of this presentation is to describe the management of such a case with delayed eruption of mandibular central incisors and canines. Methods: An 11-year-old female patient presented with DTE involving lower incisors (32, 42) and canines, seeking orthodontic treatment. Furthermore, lower permanent central incisors were congenitally missing while lower deciduous incisors were still in place. After a year-and-a-half of just monitoring the case and having suggested the extraction of deciduous first molars and canines, orthodontic treatment started with fixed appliances in the upper and lower jaw. First and second premolars gradually erupted after the precursor’s extraction. Lower canines and the two existing incisors were, after several months, surgically exposed and a gold chain apparatus was bonded on each one, while the closed eruption technique was chosen. A 0.17 × 0.25 stainless steel (SS) lingual wire, leaning on the buccal tubes of the lower molar bands and properly manipulated around them, was fitted in conjunction with the labial brackets and wires in order to facilitate the traction of the impacted teeth, which was carried out for one after the other using either an elastic chain or a second super-elastic wire. Results: All impacted teeth were finally restored to their proper place. The root of 71 did not present resorption, so the tooth was maintained in the lower arch while inter-proximal reduction was performed in the upper arch in the anterior region, in order to anticipate the lower missing incisor. Finally, a stable occlusion with proper contacts was achieved. Conclusions: Proper diagnosis, on-time extractions of deciduous teeth, and a well-designed treatment plan regarding space management and orthodontic traction of impacted teeth contributed to successful treatment outcomes in this DTE case. With the development of high-density integrated chips, low-k dielectric materials are used in the back end of line (BEOL) to reduce signal delay. However, due to the application of fine-pitch packages with high-hardness copper pillars, BEOL is susceptible to chip package interaction (CPI), which leads to reliability issues such as the delamination of interlayer dielectric (ILD) layers. In order to improve package reliability, the effect of CPI at multi-scale needs to be explored in terms of package integration. In this paper, the stress of BEOL in the flip-chip chip-scale packaging (FCCSP) model during thermal cycling is investigated by using the finite-element-based sub-model approach. A three-dimensional (3D) multi-level finite element model is established based on the FCCSP. The wiring layers were treated by the equivalent homogenization method to ensure high prediction accuracy. The stress distribution of the BEOL around the critical bump was analyzed. The cracking risk of the interface layer of the BEOL was assessed by pre-cracking at a dangerous location. In addition, the effects of the epoxy molding compound (EMC) thickness, polyimide (PI) opening, and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the underfill on cracking were investigated. The simulation results show that the first principal stress of BEOL is higher at high-temperature moments than at low-temperature moments, and mainly concentrated near the PI opening. Compared with the oxide layer, the low-k layer has a higher risk of cracking. A smaller EMC thickness, lower CTE of the underfill, and larger PI opening help to reduce the risk of cracking in the BEOL. Full article

Recently, there has been a growing interest in underground construction safety, during activities such as subway construction, underground mining, and tunnel excavation. While Internet of Things (IoT) sensors help to monitor these conditions, large-scale deployment is limited by high power needs and complex tunnel layouts, making real-time response a critical challenge. A delay-sensitive multi-sensor multi-base-station routing scheduling method is proposed for the IoT in underground mining. First, a mixed network topology of wireless and wired networks is formed based on the irregular distribution characteristics of multiple tunnels in the mine construction environment. Based on this topology, a multi-sensor and multi-base-station real-time routing scheduling problem is proposed, proving that the problem is NP-hard. Secondly, the corresponding solving algorithms are designed based on the greedy strategy and the heuristic strategy. Finally, an experimental platform is built, and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared and analyzed. Full article

Telephone time service is a wired time service that transmits time signals through a telephone network, with the advantages of simple receiving equipment and wide coverage. But the performance of time service is not high, usually several milliseconds. The time delay measurement of the telephone network is an important factor limiting the improvement in timing performance. The existing telephone service systems measure time delay based on sending characters. The time fluctuation of modulating and demodulating characters and the low accuracy of detecting characters affect the uncertainty of time delay measurement. This article proposes a time delay measurement method based on sending PN codes. It utilizes the good autocorrelation properties of PN codes to improve detection accuracy and then improve the uncertainty of delay measurement. This article studies and designs the modulation, demodulation, and capture of PN codes. Simulation has verified that this method has strong anti-noise performance. Time delay tests have proved that this method can improve the uncertainty of delay measurement by an order of magnitude in different telephone network environments. Full article

We introduce a novel wired communication approach for interactive wearable systems, employing a single signal wire and innovative group addressing protocol to reduce overhead. While wireless solutions dominate body sensor networks, wired approaches offer advantages for interactive applications that require low latency, high reliability, and communication with high-density nodes; yet they have been less explored in the context of wearable systems. Many commercial products use wired connections without disclosing technical details, limiting broader adoption. To address this gap, we present and test a new group addressing protocol implemented using Universal Asynchronous Receiver–Transmitter (UART) hardware, disclosing frame diagrams and node architectures. We developed a prototype interactive jacket with nine sensor/actuator nodes connected via three wires for power supply and data transmission to a wireless gateway. Mathematical analysis showed an overhead reduction of approximately 50% compared to traditional individual addressing. Our solution is the most wire-efficient among wired interactive wearable systems reviewed in the literature, using only one signal wire; other methods require at least two wires and often have overlapping topologies. Performance experimental evaluation revealed a total feedback delay of 2.27 ms and a maximum data frame rate of 435.4 Hz, comparable to the best-performing products and leaving room for twice the performance calculated theoretically. These results indicate that the proposed approach is suitable for interactive wearable systems, both for real-time applications and high-resolution data acquisition. Full article
