Hydrogen offers an effective pathway for the large-scale storage of renewable energy. For a tourist city located in a plateau region rich in renewable energy, hydrogen shows great potential for reducing carbon emissions and utilizing uncertain renewable energy. Herein, the wind–solar–hydrogen stand-alone and grid-connected systems in the plateau tourist city of Lijiang City in Yunnan Province are modeled and techno-economically evaluated by using the HOMER Pro software (version 3.14.2) with the multi-criteria decision analysis models. The system is composed of 5588 kW solar photovoltaic panels, an 800 kW wind turbine, a 1600 kW electrolyzer, a 421 kWh battery, and a 50 kW fuel cell. In addition to meeting the power requirements for system operation, the system has the capacity to provide daily electricity for 200 households in a neighborhood and supply 240 kg of hydrogen per day to local hydrogen-fueled buses. The stand-alone system can produce 10.15 × 106 kWh of electricity and 93.44 t of hydrogen per year, with an NPC of USD 8.15 million, an LCOE of USD 0.43/kWh, and an LCOH of USD 5.26/kg. The grid-connected system can generate 10.10 × 106 kWh of electricity and 103.01 ton of hydrogen annually. Its NPC is USD 7.34 million, its LCOE is USD 0.11/kWh, and its LCOH is USD 3.42/kg. This study provides a new solution for optimizing the configuration of hybrid renewable energy systems, which will develop the hydrogen economy and create low-carbon-emission energy systems. Improving outdoor thermal comfort is a critical objective in urban design, particularly in densely built urban environments. Elevated semi-open spaces—outdoor areas located beneath raised building structures—have been recognized for enhancing pedestrian comfort by improving airflow and shading. However, previous studies primarily focused on warm or temperate climates, leaving a significant research gap regarding their thermal performance in cold climate zones characterized by extreme seasonal variations. Specifically, few studies have investigated how these spaces perform under conditions typical of northern Chinese cities like Xi’an, which is explicitly classified within the Cold Climate Zone according to China’s national standard GB 50176-2016 and experiences both severe summer heat and cold winter conditions. To address this gap, we conducted field measurements and numerical simulations using the ENVI-met model (v5.0) to systematically evaluate the microclimatic performance of elevated ground-floor spaces in Xi’an. Key microclimatic parameters—including air temperature, mean radiant temperature, relative humidity, and wind velocity—were assessed during representative summer and winter conditions. Our findings indicate that the height of the elevated structure significantly affects outdoor thermal comfort, identifying an optimal elevated height range of 3.6–4.3 m to effectively balance summer cooling and winter sheltering needs. These results provide valuable design guidance for architects and planners aiming to enhance outdoor thermal environments in cold climate regions facing distinct seasonal extremes. Full article

The city of Acapulco was impacted by two near-consecutive hurricanes. On 25 October 2023, Hurricane Otis made landfall, reaching the highest Category 5 storm on the Saffir–Simpson scale, causing extensive coastal destruction due to extreme winds and waves. Nearly one year later (23 September 2024), Hurricane John—a Category 2 storm—caused severe flooding despite its lower intensity, primarily due to its unusual trajectory and prolonged rainfall. Digital shoreline analysis of PlanetScope images (captured one month before and after Hurricane Otis) revealed that the southern coast of Acapulco, specifically Zona Diamante—where the major seafront hotels are located—experienced substantial shoreline erosion (94 ha) and damage. In the northwestern section of the study area, the Coyuca Bar experienced the most dramatic geomorphological change in surface area. This was primarily due to the complete disappearance of the bar on October 26, which resulted in a shoreline retreat of 85 m immediately after the passage of Hurricane Otis. Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) showed that Hurricane John inundated 2385 ha, four times greater than Hurricane Otis’s flooding (567 ha). The retrofitted QGIS methodology demonstrated high reliability when compared to limited in situ local reports. Given the increased frequency of intense hurricanes, these methods and findings will be relevant in other coastal areas for monitoring and managing local communities affected by severe climate events. To study the generation and dissipation process of agglomerate fog in mountainous expressways and deeply understand the hazard mechanisms of agglomerate fog sections in mountainous expressways, based on the analysis of the geographical location characteristics of mountainous expressways and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of agglomerate fog, the airspace constitutive model of agglomerate fog in mountainous expressways was constructed based on Newton constitutive theory. Firstly, the properties of the Newtonian fluid and cluster fog were compared and analyzed, and the influence mechanism of environmental factors such as the altitude difference, topography, water system, valley effect, and vegetation on the generation and dissipation of agglomerate fog in mountainous expressways was analyzed. Based on Newton’s constitutive theory, the constitutive model of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and agglomerate fog points in the foggy airspace of the mountainous expressway was established. Then, the time and spatial distribution of fog in Chongqing and Guizhou from 2021 to 2023 were analyzed. Finally, the model was verified by using the meteorological data and fog warning data of Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province in 2023. The results show that the foggy airspace of mountainous expressways can be defined as “the space occupied by the agglomerate fog that occurs above the mountain expressway”; The temporal and spatial distribution of foggy airspace on expressways in mountainous areas is closely related to the topography, water system, vegetation distribution, and local microclimate formed by thermal radiation. The horizontal and vertical movements of the atmosphere have little influence on the foggy airspace on expressways in mountainous areas. The specific manifestation of time distribution is that the occurrence of agglomerate fog is concentrated from November to April of the following year, and the daily occurrence time is mainly concentrated between 4:00–8:00 and 18:00–22:00. The calculation results of the foggy airspace constitutive model of the expressway in the mountainous area show that when there is low surface radiation or no surface radiation, the fogging value range is [90, 100], and the fogging value range is [50, 70] when there is high surface radiation (>200), and there is generally no fog in other intervals. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for traffic safety management and control of mountainous expressway fog sections. Full article

The time series prediction of visibility in terms of various meteorological variables, such as relative humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed, is presented in this paper using Single-Variable Regression Analysis (SVRA), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Hybrid Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) techniques for several sub-tropical locations. The initial method used for the prediction of visibility in this study was the SVRA, and the results were enhanced using the ANN and ANFIS techniques. Throughout the study, neural networks with various algorithms and functions were trained with different atmospheric parameters to establish a relationship function between inputs and visibility for all locations. The trained neural models were tested and validated by comparing actual and predicted data to enhance visibility prediction accuracy. Results were compared to assess the efficiency of the proposed systems, measuring the root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2), and mean bias error (MBE) to validate the models. The standard statistical technique, particularly SVRA, revealed that the strongest functional relationship was between visibility and RH, followed by WS, T, and P, in that order. However, to improve accuracy, this study utilized back propagation and hybrid learning algorithms for visibility prediction. Error analysis from the ANN technique showed increased prediction accuracy when all the atmospheric variables were considered together. After testing various neural network models, it was found that the ANFIS model provided the most accurate predicted results, with improvements of 31.59%, 32.70%, 30.53%, 28.95%, 31.82%, and 22.34% over the ANN for Durban, Cape Town, Mthatha, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, and Mahikeng, respectively. The neuro-fuzzy model demonstrated better accuracy and efficiency by yielding the finest results with the lowest RMSE and highest R2 for all cities involved compared to the ANN model and standard statistical techniques. However, the statistical performance analysis between measured and estimated visibility indicated that the ANN produced satisfactory results. The results will find applications in Optical Wireless Communication (OWC), flight operations, and climate change analysis. Full article

Traffic-related pollutants remain a challenging global issue, with significant policy implications. Within the European Union, Romania has the highest yearly societal cost per capita due to air pollution, which kills 29,000 Romanians every year, whereas the health and economic costs are also significant. In this context, municipal authorities in the country, particularly in high-density areas, should place a strong focus on mitigating air pollution. In particular, the capital city, Bucharest, ranks among the most congested cities in the world while registering the highest pollution index in Romania, with traffic pollution responsible for two-thirds of its air pollution. Consequently, studies that assess and model pollution trends are paramount to inform local policy-making processes and assist pollution-mitigation efforts. In this paper, a generalized additive modeling (GAM) framework is employed to model hourly concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), i.e., a relevant traffic-pollution proxy, at a busy urban traffic location in central Bucharest, Romania. All models are developed on a wide, fine-granularity dataset spanning January 2017–December 2022 and include extensive meteorological covariates. Model robustness is assured by switching between the generalized additive model (GAM) framework and the generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) framework when the residual autoregressive process needs to be specifically acknowledged. Results indicate that trend GAMs explain a large amount of the hourly variation in traffic pollution. Furthermore, meteorological factors contribute to increasing the models’ explanation power, with wind direction, relative humidity, and the interaction between wind speed and the atmospheric pressure emerging as important mitigators for NO2 concentrations in Bucharest. The results of this study can be valuable in assisting local authorities to take proactive measures for traffic pollution control in the capital city of Romania. Full article

The Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region faces persistent challenges of inequality, climate change vulnerability, and deteriorating air quality. The Aburrá Valley, where Medellín is located, is a narrow tropical valley with complex topography, strong thermal inversions, and unstable atmospheric conditions, all of which exacerbate the accumulation of pollutants. In Medellín, NO2 concentrations have remained nearly unchanged over the past eight years, consistently approaching critical thresholds, despite the implementation of air quality control strategies. These persistent high concentrations are closely linked to the variability of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and are often intensified by prolonged dry periods. This study focuses on a representative street canyon in Medellín that has undergone recent urban interventions, including the construction of new public spaces and pedestrian areas, without explicitly considering their impact on NOx dispersion. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, this work evaluates the influence of urban morphology on NOx accumulation. The results reveal that areas with high Aspect Ratios (AR > 0.65) and dense vegetation exhibit reduced wind speeds at the pedestrian level—up to 40% lower compared to open zones—and higher NO2 concentrations, with maximum simulated values exceeding 50 μg/m3. This study demonstrates that the design of pedestrian corridors in complex urban environments like Medellín can unintentionally create pollutant accumulation zones, underscoring the importance of integrating air quality considerations into urban planning. The findings provide actionable insights for policymakers, emphasizing the need for comprehensive modeling and field validation to ensure healthier urban spaces in cities affected by persistent air quality issues. Urban heat island circulation (UHIC) determines the wind and thermal environments in urban areas. For Loess Tableland valley towns, the evolution characteristics of the UHIC over this negative terrain are not well understood, and therefore, it is important to investigate the evolution characteristics. A city-scale computational fluid dynamics (CSCFD) model is used, and simulation results are validated by the water tank experiment. The evolution process over such negative terrain can be divided into transient and quasi-steady stages, and in the transient stage, the airflow pattern evolves from thermal convection to city-scale closed circulation, while that in the quasi-steady stage is only city-scale closed circulation. In order to further reveal the characteristics of city-scale closed circulation, the sensitivities of different factors influencing the start time, outflow time, mixing height and heat island intensity are analyzed, and the most significant factors influencing these four parameters are urban heat flux, slope height, slope height, and potential temperature lapse rate, respectively. Finally, the dimensionless mixing height and heat island intensity for the valley town increase by 56.80% and 128.68%, respectively, compared to those for the flat city. This study provides guidance for the location and layout of built-up areas in the valley towns. Full article

Air pollution monitoring in ungauged zones presents unique challenges yet remains critical for understanding environmental health impacts and socioeconomic dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This study investigates air pollution patterns in northwestern Syria during 2019–2024, analyzing NO2 and CO concentrations using Sentinel-5P TROPOMI satellite data processed through Google Earth Engine. Monthly concentration averages were examined across eight key locations using linear regression analysis to determine temporal trends, with Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients calculated between pollutant levels and five meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation) to determine the influence of political governance, economic conditions, and environmental sustainability factors on pollution dynamics. Quality assurance filtering retained only measurements with values ≥ 0.75, and statistical significance was assessed at a p < 0.05 level. The findings reveal distinctive spatiotemporal patterns that reflect the region’s complex political-economic landscape. NO2 concentrations exhibited clear political signatures, with opposition-controlled territories showing upward trends (Al-Rai: 6.18 × 10−8 mol/m2) and weak correlations with climatic variables (<0.20), indicating consistent industrial operations. In contrast, government-controlled areas demonstrated significant downward trends (Hessia: −2.6 × 10−7 mol/m2) with stronger climate–pollutant correlations (0.30–0.45), reflecting the impact of economic sanctions on industrial activities. CO concentrations showed uniform downward trends across all locations regardless of political control. This study contributes significantly to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing critical baseline data for SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), mapping urban pollution hotspots for SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), demonstrating climate–pollution correlations for SDG 13 (Climate Action), revealing governance impacts on environmental patterns for SDG 16 (Peace and Justice), and developing transferable methodologies for SDG 17 (Partnerships). These findings underscore the importance of incorporating environmental safeguards into post-conflict reconstruction planning to ensure sustainable development. Full article

Metropolitan city express line tunnels are fully enclosed and often span long distances between stations, allowing multiple trains within a single interval. Traditional segmented ventilation ensures only one train per section, but ultra-long tunnels with shaftless designs introduce new challenges under fire conditions. This study investigates smoke behavior in an ultra-long inter-district tunnel during multi-train blockage scenarios. A numerical model evaluates the effects of train spacing, fire source location, and receding spacing on smoke back-layering, temperature distribution, and flow velocity. Results indicate that when train spacing exceeds 200 m and longitudinal wind speed is above 1.2 m/s, the impact of train spacing on smoke back-layering becomes negligible. Larger train spacing increases back-layering under constant wind speed, while higher wind speeds reduce it. Fire source location and evacuation spacing affect the extent and pattern of smoke spread and high-temperature zones, especially under reverse ventilation conditions. These findings provide quantitative insights into fire-induced smoke dynamics in ultra-long tunnels, offering theoretical support for optimizing ventilation control and evacuation strategies in urban express systems. Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental threats, with particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 representing its most harmful components, significantly affecting public health. These particles are primarily generated by transport, industry, residential heating, and agriculture, and are associated with increased incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma attacks, and heart attacks, as well as chronic illnesses and premature mortality. The most vulnerable groups include children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. This study focuses on the analysis of health risks associated with PM10 and PM2.5 air pollution in the city of Zvolen, which serves as a representative case due to its urban structure, traffic load, and industrial activity. The aim is to assess the current state of air quality, identify the main sources of pollution, and evaluate the health impacts of particulate matter on the local population. The results will be compared with selected Slovak cities—Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok—to understand regional differences in exposure and its health consequences. The results revealed consistently elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM) across all analyzed cities, frequently exceeding the guideline values recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), although remaining below the thresholds set by current national legislation. The lowest average concentrations were recorded in the city of Zvolen (PM10: 20 μg/m3; PM2.5: 15 μg/m3). These lower values may be attributed to the location of the reference monitoring station operated by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ), situated on J. Alexy Street in the southern part of the city—south of Zvolen’s primary industrial emitter, Kronospan. Due to predominantly southerly wind patterns, PM particles are transported northward, potentially leading to higher pollution loads in the northern areas of the city, which are currently not being monitored. We analyzed trends in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations and their relationship with hospitalization data for respiratory diseases. The results indicate a clear correlation between the concentration of suspended particulate matter and the number of hospital admissions due to respiratory illnesses. Our findings thus confirm the significant adverse effects of particulate air pollution on population health and highlight the urgent need for systematic monitoring and effective measures to reduce emissions, particularly in urban areas. Marine atmospheric boundary-layer height (MABLH) is crucial for ocean heat, momentum, and substance transfer, affecting ocean circulation, climate, and ecosystems. Due to the unique geographical location of the South China Sea (SCS), coupled with its complex atmospheric environment and sparse ground-based observation stations, accurately determining the MABLH remains challenging. Coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL), as a laser-based active remote sensing technology, provides high-resolution wind profiling by transmitting pulsed laser beams and analyzing backscattered signals from atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we developed a stacking optimal ensemble model (SOEM) to estimate MABLH in the vicinity of the site by integrating CDWL measurements from a representative SCS site with ERA5 (fifth-generation reanalysis dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) data from December 2019 to May 2021. Based on the categorization of the total cloud cover data into weather conditions such as clear/slightly cloudy, cloudy/transitional, and overcast/rainy, the SOEM demonstrates enhanced performance with an average mean absolute percentage error of 3.7%, significantly lower than the planetary boundary-layer-height products of ERA5. The SOEM outperformed random forest, extreme gradient boosting, and histogram-based gradient boosting models, achieving a robustness coefficient (R2) of 0.95 and the lowest mean absolute error of 32 m under the clear/slightly cloudy condition. The validation conducted in the coastal city of Qingdao further confirmed the superiority of the SOEM in resolving meteorological heterogeneity. The predictions of the SOEM aligned well with CDWL observations during Typhoon Sinlaku (2020), capturing dynamic disturbances in MABLH. Overall, the SOEM provides a precise approach for estimating convective boundary-layer height, supporting marine meteorology, onshore wind power, and coastal protection applications. Full article

Background: Air pollution is a persistent and critical challenge for Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city. The city’s unique topographical and meteorological conditions—being located in a mountain basin with dense urban development—restrict natural ventilation and contribute to frequent exceedances of air quality standards. These factors make accurate assessment and management of atmospheric pollution particularly urgent for the region. Aim: This study aims to develop and apply a novel, high-resolution three-dimensional numerical model to analyze the spatial distribution of key atmospheric indicators—air velocity, temperature, and pollutant concentrations in Almaty. The goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how meteorological and urban factors influence air quality, with a focus on both horizontal and vertical stratification. Methods: A three-dimensional computational model was constructed, integrating real meteorological data and detailed urban topography. The model solves the compressible Navier–Stokes, energy, and pollutant transport equations using the finite volume method over a 1000 × 1000 × 500 m domain. Meteorological fields are synthesized along all spatial axes to account for vortex structures, urban heat islands, and stratification effects. This approach enables the simulation of atmospheric parameters with unprecedented spatial resolution for Almaty. Results: The simulation reveals significant spatial heterogeneity in atmospheric parameters. Wind velocity ranges from 0.31 to 5.76 m/s (mean: 2.14 m/s), temperature varies between 12.03 °C and 19.47 °C (mean: 16.12 °C), and pollutant concentrations fluctuate from 5.02 to 102.35 μg/m3 (mean: 44.87 μg/m3). Notably, pollutant levels in the city center exceed those at the periphery by more than two-fold (68.23 μg/m3, 29.14 μg/m3), and vertical stratification leads to a marked decrease in concentrations with altitude. These findings provide, for the first time, a comprehensive and quantitative picture of air quality dynamics in Almaty. Conclusion: The developed model advances the scientific understanding of urban air pollution in complex terrains and offers practical tools for city planners and policymakers. By identifying pollution hotspots and elucidating the influence of meteorological factors, the model supports the optimization of urban infrastructure, zoning, and environmental monitoring systems. This research lays the groundwork for evidence-based strategies to mitigate air pollution and improve public health in Almaty and similar urban environments. Full article

Characteristics of Ship-Emitted VOCs and Their Contributions to Urban Atmospheric VOCs in Guangzhou, China

With the implementation of China’s low-sulfur fuel policy, the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from ship exhausts have changed significantly, and the influence of these emissions on the local atmosphere of port cities needs to be evaluated. In this study, the characteristics of localized source profiles of ship-emitted VOCs with respect to different ship types, fuel types, and engine operating conditions were analyzed in Guangzhou Port. Oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) dominated in ferry (91.1%), cargo ship (87.0%), and tugboat (54.4% ± 7.9%) emissions (diesel fuel), while alkanes (56.3% ± 1.6%) and alkenes (36.0% ± 0.9%) were major species in multi-purpose ship (LNG fuel) emissions. These results suggest the dominance of OVOCs in the exhaust emissions of diesel-type ships and the prominent difference in ship-emitted VOCs between diesel and LNG fuel ships, which also influenced the emission characteristics of VOCs from main and auxiliary engines. Based on the measured source profiles, ship emissions contributed 18.2% ± 0.8% (summer), 8.7% ± 1.9% (winter), 6.0% ± 1.1% (spring), and 5.6% ± 1.7% (autumn) to VOCs in the port area, and 7.8% ± 1.5% in July and 5.0% ± 0.5% in September in the urban area. An air mass trajectory analysis revealed that the south wind transported the ship exhaust emissions to the port area and inland urban area, which explained the higher contributions of ship emissions in summer and more ship emissions received in the port area than in the urban area. Therefore, estimating the influence of ship emissions on ambient air quality in port cities requires integrating local ship source profiles, locations, and meteorological conditions. This study provides insights into the ship-emitted VOC characteristics given China’s low-sulfur fuel policy and their differential contributions to urban atmospheric VOCs. Full article

Catastrophic precipitation is an inherent feature of temperate climates. Its occurrence is a manifestation of climate change, but also of the variability of atmospheric circulation. Mountainous areas may be particularly vulnerable as they receive more precipitation and are also areas where relief plays an important role in modifying the distribution of precipitation. One such area is the Polish Western Carpathian Mountains, especially the area around the city of Bielsko-Biała, located at their foot and directly exposed to rain-bearing winds. In 2024, two episodes of unusually heavy precipitation in quick succession occurred in this area, resulting in severe damage to infrastructure. This painful experience inspired a study focusing on the frequency of such catastrophic precipitation events and their synoptic circumstances spanning the period from the mid-20th century to the present day. Daily precipitation totals covering the study period of 74 years were used to identify a category of catastrophic precipitation (here set at above 100 mm). The six events identified to match the criteria appeared from May to September, always accompanied by cyclonic circulation types with advection from the northern sector and with a cyclonic trough situation over southern Poland. The study showed that the leading role in their formation was played by deep convection, especially a Genoa low moving along the Vb Van Bebber track. The damage and destruction suffered as a result were a consequence of the cumulative impact of high-intensity rainfall, itself caused by a combination of specific synoptic thermodynamic and orographic conditions.
