The tight conglomerate oil reservoir in Xinjiang’s Mahu area is situated on the northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin. The reservoir comprises five stacked fan bodies, with the Triassic Baikouquan Formation serving as the primary pay zone. To delineate the study scope and conduct a field validation, the Ma-X well block was selected for investigation. Through triaxial compression tests and large-scale true triaxial hydraulic fracturing simulations, we analyzed the failure mechanisms of tight conglomerates and identified key factors governing hydraulic fracture propagation. The experimental results reveal several important points. (1) Gravel characteristics control failure modes: Larger gravel size and higher content increase inter-gravel stress concentration, promoting gravel crushing under confining pressure. At low-to-medium confining pressures, shear failure primarily occurs within the matrix, forming bypassing fractures around gravel particles. (2) Horizontal stress differential dominates fracture geometry: Fractures preferentially propagate as transverse fractures perpendicular to the wellbore, with stress anisotropy being the primary control factor. (3) Injection rate dictates fracture complexity: Weakly cemented interfaces in conglomerates lead to distinct fracture morphologies—low rates favor interface activation, while high rates enhance penetration through gravels. (4) Stimulation strategy impacts SRV: Multi-cluster perforations show limited effectiveness in enhancing fracture network complexity. In contrast, variable-rate fracturing significantly increases stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) compared to constant-rate methods, as evidenced by microseismic data demonstrating improved interface connectivity and broader fracture coverage. Plant genders could express different functional strategies to compensate for different reproductive costs, as females have an additional role in fruit and seed production. Secondary sexual dimorphism (SSD) expression is frequently greater under stress than under optimal growth conditions. The early gender identification in papaya may help to reduce orchard costs because the most desirable fruit shape is formed by hermaphrodite plants. We hypothesized that (a) gender ecophysiological phenotyping can be an alternative to make gender segregations in papaya seedlings, and (b) such gender segregation will be more efficient after a short drought exposure than under adequate water conditions. To test such hypotheses, seedlings of two papaya varieties (‘Candy’ and ‘THB’) were exposed to two kind of treatments: (1) water shortage (WS) for 45 h, after which they were well watered, and (2) continuously well-watered (WW). Study assessed the ecophysiological responses, such as stomatal conductance (gs), SPAD index, optical reflectance indices, morphological traits, and biomass accumulation in females (F) and hermaphrodites (H). In WS treatment, the SSD was expressed in 14 of 18 traits investigated, while in WW treatment, the SSD was expressed only in 7 of 18 traits. As tools for SSD expression, gs and simple ratio pigment index (SRPI) must be measured on the first or second day after the imposed WS was interrupted, respectively, while the other parameters must be measured after a period of four days. In some traits, the SSD was expressed in only one variety, or the response of H and F plants were of opposite values for two varieties. The choice of the clearest responses of gender segregation in WS treatment will be greenness index, combination of normalized difference vegetation index (CNDVI), photochemical reflectance index (PRI), water band index (WBI), SRPI, leaf number, leaf dry mass, and leaf mass ratio. If the WW conditions are maintained for papaya seedling production, the recommendation in gender segregation will be the analysis of CNDVI, carotenoid reflectance index 2 (CRI2), WBI, and SRPI. The non-destructive optical leaf indices segregated papaya hermaphrodites from females under both water conditions and eventually could be adjusted for wide-scale platform evaluations, with planned space arrangements of seedlings, and sensor’s set. To enhance the bearing capacity of cable–pylon anchorage zones in cable-stayed bridges, this paper proposes the integral steel wall plate (IWP) structure and investigates the structural performance of its application in anchorage zones with a steel anchor beam and with a steel anchor box. The proposed structure contains an end plate, a surface plate, and several perforated side plates, forming steel cabins that encase the concrete pylon wall, where the steel and concrete are connected by perfobond connectors on side plates. A half-scaled experiment and a finite element analysis were first conducted on the IWP with the steel anchor beam to study the deformation at the steel–concrete interface, as well as the stress distribution in steel plates and rebars. The results were compared with experimental data of a conventional type of anchorage zone. Then, finite element models of anchorages with steel anchor boxes were established based on the geometries of an as-built bridge, and the performance of the IWP structure was compared with conventional details. Finally, the effects of plate thickness and connector arrangement were investigated. Results show that the proposed IWP structure offers excellent performance when applied with an anchor beam or anchor box, and it can effectively reduce principal tensile stress on the concrete pylon wall compared with conventional anchorage details. Phubbing, a relatively new phenomenon in the field of digital risks, refers to the act of ignoring someone in favor of focusing on a smartphone during face-to-face interactions. Parental phubbing, a specific form of this behavior, is a prevalent negative parenting practice that can affect parent–child relationships and child development. However, the impact of parental phubbing on the emotional and behavioral development of preschool children remains unclear. This study aims to explore the relationship between parental phubbing and preschoolers’ behavioral problems, as well as test whether parents’ mindful attention awareness (MAA) acts as a mediator between them. Method: A questionnaire was administered to 138 Italian parents (mean age = 38.5, SD = 6.2) of 138 kindergarten preschoolers (mean age = 3.9, SD = 1.03). Questionnaires included the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP), the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results: Analyses revealed a significant negative correlation between the MAAS and SDQ total scores, a positive correlation between the GSP total score and the SDQ total score, and a negative correlation between the GSP total score and the MAAS total score. The mediation analysis did not show a direct effect of GSP on SDQ, suggesting that parental phubbing did not directly predict children’s behavioral difficulties. Nevertheless, the indirect effect measured by bootstrapping was significant, indicating that parental MAA fully mediated the relationship between parental phubbing and preschoolers’ problematic behaviors. Conclusions: Although further research is needed, parental mindfulness may influence phubbing behaviors in parents providing valuable insights for early interventions aimed at reducing problem behaviors in young children. This study investigates the effectiveness of passive design in low-rise residential buildings located in arid desert climates, using the Dubai Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) competition as a case study. This full-scale experiment offers a unique opportunity to evaluate design solutions under controlled, realistic conditions; prescriptive, modeled performance; and monitored performance assessments. The prescriptive assessment reviews geometry, orientation, envelope thermal properties, and shading. Most houses adopt compact forms, with envelope-to-volume and envelope-to-floor area ratios averaging 1 and 3.7, respectively, and window-to-wall ratios of approximately 17%, favoring north-facing openings to optimize daylight while reducing heat gain. Shading is strategically applied, horizontal on south façades and vertical on east and west. The thermal properties significantly exceed the local code requirements, with wall performance up to 80% better than that mandated. The modeled assessment uses Building Energy Models (BEMs) to simulate the impact of prescriptive measures on energy performance. Three variations are applied: assigning minimum local code requirements to all the houses to isolate the geometry (baseline); removing shading; and applying actual envelope properties. Geometry alone accounts for up to 60% of the variation in cooling intensity; shading reduces loads by 6.5%, and enhanced envelopes lower demand by 14%. The monitored assessment uses contest-period data. Indoor temperatures remain stable (22–25 °C) despite outdoor fluctuations. Energy use confirms that houses with good designs and airtightness have lower cooling loads. Airtightness varies widely (avg. 14.5 m3/h/m2), with some well-designed houses underperforming due to construction flaws. These findings highlight the critical role of passive design as the first layer for improving the energy performance of the built environment and advancing toward net-zero targets, specifically in arid desert climates. Polysaccharides and phenols are commonly co-localized in various plant-derived foods, including highland barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum Hook. f.). The interactions between these compounds can influence multiple characteristics of food products, including their physicochemical properties and functional performance, such as bioavailability, stability, and digestibility, which may support promising application of the phenol and polysaccharide complex in health food industry. In this study, two complexes with potential existence in highland barley, such as β-glucan-ferulic acid (GF) and β-glucan-quercetin (GQ), were prepared using the equilibrium dialysis method in vitro. FTIR and SEM results showed that ferulic acid and quercetin formed complexes with β-glucan separately, with covalent and non-covalent bonds and a dense morphological structure. The pH value, reaction temperature, and concentration of phosphate buffer solution (PBS) were confirmed to have an impact on the formation and yield of the complex. Through the test of the response surface, it was found that the optimum conditions for GF and (GQ) preparations were a pH of 6.5 (6), a PBS buffer concentration of 0.08 mol/L (0.3 mol/L), and a temperature of 8 °C (20 °C). Through in vitro assays, GF and GQ were found to possess good antioxidant activity, with a greater scavenging effect of DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl radical than the individual phenolic acids and glucans, as well as their physical mixtures. Taking GF as an example, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity ranked as GF (71.74%) > ferulic acid (49.50%) > PGF (44.43%) > β-glucan (43.84%). Similar trends were observed for ABTS radical scavenging (GF: 54.56%; ferulic acid: 44.37%; PGF: 44.95%; β-glucan: 36.42%) and hydroxyl radical elimination (GF: 39.16%; ferulic acid: 33.06%; PGF: 35.51%; β-glucan: 35.47%). In conclusion, the convenient preparation method and excellent antioxidant effect of the phenol–polysaccharide complexes from highland barley provide new opportunities for industrial-scale production, development, and design of healthy food based on these complexes. Computer vision is of wide interest to perform the phenotyping of horticultural crops such as apple trees at high throughput. In orchards specially constructed for variety testing or breeding programs, computer vision tools should be able to extract phenotypical information form each tree separately. We focus on segmenting individual apple trees as the main task in this context. Segmenting individual apple trees in dense orchard rows is challenging because of the complexity of outdoor illumination and intertwined branches. Traditional methods rely on supervised learning, which requires a large amount of annotated data. In this study, we explore an alternative approach using prompt engineering with the Segment Anything Model and its variants in a zero-shot setting. Specifically, we first detect the trunk and then position a prompt (five points in a diamond shape) located above the detected trunk to feed to the Segment Anything Model. We evaluate our method on the apple REFPOP, a new large-scale European apple tree dataset and on another publicly available dataset. On these datasets, our trunk detector, which utilizes a trained YOLOv11 model, achieves a good detection rate of 97% based on the prompt located above the detected trunk, achieving a Dice score of 70% without training on the REFPOP dataset and 84% without training on the publicly available dataset.We demonstrate that our method equals or even outperforms purely supervised segmentation approaches or non-prompted foundation models. These results underscore the potential of foundational models guided by well-designed prompts as scalable and annotation-efficient solutions for plant segmentation in complex agricultural environments. The aim of this study was to improve the efficiency of in situ uranium leaching by developing a specialized methodology for selecting rational parameters for the chemical treatment of production wells. This approach was designed to enhance the filtration properties of ores and extend the uninterrupted operation period of wells, considering the clay content of the productive horizon, the geological characteristics of the ore-bearing layer, and the composition of precipitation-forming materials. The mineralogical characteristics of ore and precipitate samples formed during the in situ leaching of uranium under various mining and geological conditions at a uranium deposit in the Syrdarya depression were identified using an X-ray diffraction analysis. It was established that ores of the Santonian stage are relatively homogeneous and consist mainly of quartz. During well operation, the precipitates formed are predominantly gypsum, which has little impact on the filtration properties of the ore. Ores of the Maastrichtian stage are less homogeneous and mainly composed of quartz and smectite, with minor amounts of potassium feldspar and kaolinite. The leaching of these ores results in the formation of gypsum with quartz impurities, which gradually reduces the filtration properties of the ore. Ores of the Campanian stage are heterogeneous, consisting mainly of quartz with varying proportions of clay minerals and gypsum. The leaching of these ores generates a variety of precipitates that significantly reduce the filtration properties of the productive horizon. Effective compositions and concentrations of decolmatant (clog removal) solutions were selected under laboratory conditions using a specially developed methodology and a TESCAN MIRA scanning electron microscope. Based on a scanning electron microscope analysis of the samples, the effectiveness of a decolmatizing solution based on hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids (taking into account the concentration of the acids in the solution) was established for the destruction of precipitate formation during the in situ leaching of uranium. Geological blocks were ranked by their clay content to select rational parameters of decolmatant solutions for the efficient enhancement of ore filtration properties and the prevention of precipitation formation. Pilot-scale testing of the selected decolmatant parameters under various mining and geological conditions allowed the optimal chemical treatment parameters to be determined based on the clay content and the composition of precipitates in the productive horizon. An analysis of pilot well trials using the new approach showed an increase in the uninterrupted operational period of wells by 30%–40% under average mineral acid concentrations and by 25%–45% under maximum concentrations with surfactant additives in complex geological settings. As a result, an effective methodology for ranking geological blocks based on their ore clay content and precipitate composition was developed to determine the rational parameters of decolmatant solutions, enabling a maximized filtration performance and an extended well service life. This makes it possible to reduce the operating costs of extraction, control the geotechnological parameters of uranium well mining, and improve the efficiency of the in situ leaching of uranium under complex mining and geological conditions. Additionally, the approach increases the environmental and operational safety during uranium ore leaching intensification. Full article

Axial truncal dystonia can present as either flexion or extension, often with a tendency toward lateral movement. Flexion dystonia is more common and may represent a clinical spectrum associated with parkinsonism. In contrast, extensor trunk dystonia is less frequent and exhibits a diverse range of causes. In this paper, we reviewed the literature on axial extensor trunk dystonia. We identified 11 studies involving 49 patients, of which only 10 had idiopathic trunk dystonia. Treatment with botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) emerged as the most effective therapy; however, many studies did not provide detailed descriptions of the treatment (4/11) and follow-up periods were not specified or short term (up to one–two years). We present four new, well-documented patients with the idiopathic form of extensor trunk dystonia who were treated with BoNT/A with moderate to significant effect according to Global Clinical Impression scale (GCI) and Burke-Fahn-Marsden (BFM) dystonia scale. These cases include long-term follow-up for three patients, all without any adverse events. While the diagnostic process and treatment can be challenging, we recommend using BoNT/A with adjusted doses tailored to the appropriate muscle groups as a first-line treatment. Full article

Poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-polysarcosine (PCL-b-PSar) block copolymers (BCPs) emerge as a promising alternative to conventional poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) BCPs for biomedical applications, leveraging superior biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, we synthesized two series of PCL-b-PSar BCPs with controlled polymerization degrees (DP of PCL: 45/67; DP of PSar: 28–99) and low polydispersity indexes (Đ ≤ 1.1) and systematically investigated their crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) in alcohol solvents (ethanol, n-butanol, and n-hexanol). It was found that the limited solubility of PSar in alcohols resulted in competition between micellization and crystallization during self-assembly of PCL-b-PSar, and thus coexistence of lamellae and spherical micelles. To overcome this morphological heterogeneity, we developed a modified self-seeding method by employing a two-step crystallization strategy (i.e., Tc1 = 33 °C and Tc2 = 8 °C), achieving conversion of micelles into crystals and yielding uniform self-assembled structures. PCL-b-PSar BCPs with short PSar blocks tended to form well-defined two-dimensional lamellar crystals, while those with long PSar blocks induced formation of hierarchical structures in the PCL45 series and polymer aggregation on crystal surfaces in the PCL67 series. Solvent quality notably influenced the self-assembly pathways of PCL45-b-PSar28. Lamellar crystals were formed in ethanol and n-butanol, but micrometer-scale dendritic aggregates were generated in n-hexanol, primarily due to a significant Hansen solubility parameter mismatch. This study elucidated the CDSA mechanism of PCL-b-PSar in alcohols, enabling precise structural control for biomedical applications. Full article

Urban Densification and Outdoor Thermal Comfort: Scenario-Based Analysis in Zurich’s Altstetten–Albisrieden District

The growing urban population has made densification a key focus of urban development. It is crucial to create an urban planning strategy that understands the environmental, social, and economic effects of densification at both the district and city levels. In Switzerland, densification is a legally binding aim to foster housing and jobs within urban boundaries. The challenge is to accommodate population growth while maintaining a high quality of life. Zurich exemplifies this situation, necessitating the accommodation of approximately 25% of the anticipated increase in both the resident population and associated workplaces, as of 2016. This study examined the effects of urban densification on urban forms and microclimates in the Altstetten–Albisrieden district. It developed five densification scenarios based on current urban initiatives and assessed their impacts. Results showed that the current Building and Zoning Plan provides sufficient capacity to accommodate growth. Strategies such as densifying parcels older than fifty years and adding floors to newer buildings were found to minimally impact existing urban forms. Using the SOLWEIG model in the Urban Multi-scale Environmental Predictor (UMEP), this study simulated mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) in the selected urban areas. The results demonstrated that densification reduced daytime average temperatures by 0.60 °C and diurnal averages by 0.23 °C, but increased average nighttime temperatures by 0.38 °C. This highlights the importance of addressing warm nights. The study concludes that well-planned densification can significantly contribute to urban liveability, emphasising the need for thoughtful building design to improve outdoor thermal comfort. MD Student Perceptions of ChatGPT for Reflective Writing Feedback in Undergraduate Medical Education

At the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, a significant component of the MD curriculum involves written narrative reflections on topics related to professional identity in medicine, with written feedback provided by their in-person longitudinal facilitators (LFs). However, it remains to be understood how generative artificial intelligence chatbots, such as ChatGPT (GPT-4), augment the feedback process and how MD students perceive feedback provided by ChatGPT versus the feedback provided by their LFs. In this study, 15 MD students provided their written narrative reflections along with the feedback they received from their LFs. Their reflections were input into ChatGPT (GPT-4) to generate instantaneous personalized feedback. MD students rated both modalities of feedback using a Likert-scale survey, in addition to providing open-ended textual responses. Quantitative analysis involved mean comparisons and t-tests, while qualitative responses were coded for themes and representational quotations. The results showed that while the LF-provided feedback was rated slightly higher in six out of eight survey items, these differences were not statistically significant. In contrast, ChatGPT scored significantly higher in helping to identify strengths and areas for improvement, as well as in providing actionable steps for improvement. Criticisms of ChatGPT included a discernible “AI tone” and paraphrasing or misuse of quotations from the reflections. In addition, MD students valued LF feedback for being more personal and reflective of the real, in-person relationships formed with LFs. Overall, findings suggest that although skepticism regarding ChatGPT’s feedback exists amongst MD students, it represents a viable avenue for deepening reflective practice and easing some of the burden on LFs. The growing demand for sustainable, functional ingredients in the food industry has driven interest in marine-derived biopolymers. Among marine sources, microalgae represent a promising yet underexplored reservoir of bioactive gel-forming compounds, particularly extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs), both sulfated and non-sulfated, as well as proteins that exhibit unique gelling, emulsifying, and stabilizing properties. This study focuses on microalgal species with demonstrated potential to produce viscoelastic, shear-thinning gels, making them suitable for applications in food stabilization, texture modification, and nutraceutical delivery. Recent advances in biotechnology and cultivation methods have improved access to high-value strains, which exhibit promising physicochemical properties for the development of novel food textures, structured formulations, and sustainable food packaging materials. Furthermore, these microalgae-derived gels offer additional health benefits, such as antioxidant and prebiotic activities, aligning with current trends toward functional foods containing prebiotic materials. Key challenges in large-scale production, including low EPS productivity, high processing costs, and lack of regulatory frameworks, are critically discussed. Despite these barriers, advances in cultivation technologies and biorefinery approaches offer new avenues for commercial application. Overall, microalgal gels hold significant promise as sustainable, multifunctional ingredients for clean-label food formulations. Full article

Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is defined by articular cartilage loss, increased discomfort, and functional restrictions. Changes in lifestyle, painkillers, intra-articular injections, and, as a last resort, surgery are all part of clinical therapy. In this setting, intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) represent a relevant and diffused therapeutic option. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was performed from October 2024 to May 2025 in 70 patients with knee OA. HA was administered in three intra-articular injections and was followed up at 3 and 6 months from the last injection. Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) was evaluated as primary outcome measure; Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), time up and go test, six-minute walking test, general health assessment with 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (Zung SAS), and Zung’s Self-Rating Depression Scale (Zung SDS) as secondary outcome measures. Results: We observed a statistically significant improvement in clinical scores at 3 months in both HA formulations compared to the control group. No relevant side effects were described during the study. Conclusion: Hyalubrix 30 mg/2 mL and DIART 1.8%/2 mL are two safe and effective therapeutic options to manage knee OA, offering benefits in pain control, functionality and emotional wellness. Coping Strategies and Health-Related Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Survivors

Background: The aim was to explore the association between coping strategies (CSs) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in breast cancer (BC) survivors and to analyze the role of relevant sociodemographic and clinical variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 305 women under follow-up for surgically treated BC in Spain. CSs were measured using the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Scale and the HRQoL with the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results: The mean age at BC diagnosis for participants was 57.4 years, with 60.3% of diagnoses at the local stage. Most frequent complementary treatments were radiotherapy (53.4%) and chemotherapy (33.1%). Adaptative CS scores were positively associated both with higher physical HRQoL (adjusted regression coefficient: 2.19; 95% confidence interval: 0.11; 4.27, p-value: 0.039) and mental HRQoL scores (coef.: 2.65: 95%CI: 0.25; 5.04, p-value: 0.030). Maladaptive CS scores were inversely associated with mental HRQoL scores (coef.: −3.92; 95%CI: −6.62; −1.22, p-value: 0.005). The effects were stronger among women with a favorable BC prognosis. Conclusions: Adaptive CSs positively affected the physical and mental HRQoL, while maladaptive CSs negatively affected the mental HRQoL. Therefore, psychosocial interventions that promote adaptive CSs and avoid maladaptive ones could improve the well-being of women with a favorable BC prognosis. Full article
