Alperujo, a solid by-product from the two-phase olive oil extraction process, poses significant environmental challenges due to its high organic load, phytotoxicity, and phenolic content. At the same time, it represents a promising feedstock for recovering value-added compounds such as phenols and volatile fatty acids (VFAs). When used as a substrate for white rot fungi (WRF), it also produces ligninolytic enzymes. This study explores the use of two native WRF, Anthracophyllum discolor and Stereum hirsutum, for the biotransformation of alperujo under solid-state fermentation conditions, with and without supplementation of copper and manganese, two cofactors known to enhance fungal enzymatic activity. S. hirsutum stood out for its ability to release high concentrations of phenolic compounds (up to 6001 ± 236 mg gallic acid eq L−1) and VFAs (up to 1627 ± 325 mg L−1) into the aqueous extract, particularly with metal supplementation. In contrast, A. discolor was more effective in degrading phenolic compounds within the solid matrix, achieving a 41% reduction over a 30-day period. However, its ability to accumulate phenolics and VFAs in the extract was limited. Both WRF exhibited increased enzymatic activities (particularly Laccase and Manganese Peroxidase) with the addition of Cu-Mn, highlighting the potential of the aqueous extract as a natural source of biocatalysts. Phytotoxicity assays using Solanum lycopersicum seeds confirmed a partial detoxification of the treated alperujo. However, none of the fungi could entirely eliminate inhibitory effects on their own, suggesting the need for complementary stabilization steps before agricultural reuse. Overall, the results indicate that S. hirsutum, especially when combined with metal supplementation, is better suited for valorizing alperujo through the recovery of bioactive compounds. Meanwhile, A. discolor may be more suitable for detoxifying the solid phase strategies. These findings support the integration of fungal pretreatment into biorefinery schemes that valorize agroindustrial residues while mitigating environmental issues. Full article

: This study reports the development of a sustainable biocatalyst system for free fatty acid (FFA) production from cocoa bean shell (CBS) oil using Burkholderia cepacia lipase (BCL). CBS was explored as both a support material and a reaction substrate. Six immobilized systems were prepared using organic (CBS), inorganic (silica), and hybrid (CBS–silica) supports via physical adsorption or covalent binding. Among them, the covalently immobilized enzyme on CBS (ORG-CB) showed the most balanced performance, achieving a catalytic efficiency (Ke) of 0.063 mM−1·min−1 (18.6% of the free enzyme), broad pH–temperature tolerance, and over 50% activity retention after eight reuse cycles. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed enhanced thermal resistance for ORG-CB (Ed = 32.3 kJ mol−1; ΔH‡ = 29.7 kJ mol−1), while kinetic evaluation revealed that its thermal deactivation occurred faster than for the free enzyme under prolonged heating. In application trials, ORG-CB reached 60.1% FFA conversion from CBS oil, outperforming the free enzyme (49.9%). These findings validate CBS as a dual-function material for enzyme immobilization and valorization of agro-industrial waste. The results also reinforce the impact of immobilization chemistry and support composition on the operational and thermal performance of biocatalysts, contributing to the advancement of green chemistry strategies in enzyme-based processing. The food industry consumes large amounts of water across various processes, and generates wastewater characterized by parameters like biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, pH, suspended solids, and nutrients. To meet environmental standards and enable reuse or valorization, treatment methods such as physicochemical, biological, and membrane-based processes are applied. This review focuses on the valorization of food industry wastewater in the biotechnological production of high-value products, with an emphasis on starch-rich wastewater, wineries and confectionery industry wastewater, and with a focus on new technologies for reduces environmental burden but also supports circular economy principles. Starch-rich wastewaters, particularly those generated by the potato processing industry, offer considerable potential for biotechnological valorization due to their high content of soluble starch, proteins, organic acids, minerals, and lipids. These effluents can be efficiently converted by various fungi (e.g., Aspergillus, Trichoderma) and yeasts (e.g., Rhodotorula, Candida) into value-added products such as lipids for biodiesel, organic acids, microbial proteins, carotenoids, and biofungicides. Similarly, winery wastewaters, characterized by elevated concentrations of sugars and polyphenols, have been successfully utilized as medium for microbial cultivation and product synthesis. Microorganisms belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Trichoderma, Chlorella, Klebsiella, and Xanthomonas have demonstrated the ability to transform these effluents into biofuels, microbial biomass, biopolymers, and proteins, contributing to sustainable bioprocess development. Additionally, wastewater from the confectionery industry, rich in sugars, proteins, and lipids, serves as a favorable fermentation medium for the production of xanthan gum, bioethanol, biopesticides, and bioplastics (e.g., PHA and PHB). Microorganisms of the genera Xanthomonas, Bacillus, Zymomonas, and Cupriavidus are commonly employed in these processes. Although there are still certain regulatory issues, research gaps, and the need for more detailed economic analysis and kinetics of such production, we can conclude that this type of biotechnological production on waste streams has great potential, contributing to environmental sustainability and advancing the principles of the circular economy. Gasification of municipal solid waste and other biogenic residues (e.g., biomass and biowaste) is increasingly recognized as a promising thermochemical pathway for converting non-recyclable fractions into valuable energy carriers, with applications in electricity generation, district heating, hydrogen production, and synthetic fuels. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of major gasification technologies, including fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained flow, plasma, supercritical water, microwave-assisted, high-temperature steam, and rotary kiln systems. Key aspects such as feedstock compatibility, operating parameters, technology readiness level, and integration within circular economy frameworks are critically evaluated. A comparative assessment of incineration and pyrolysis highlights the environmental and energetic advantages of gasification. The valorization pathways for main product (syngas) and by-products (syngas, ash, tar, and biochar) are also explored, emphasizing their reuse in environmental, agricultural, and industrial applications. Despite progress, large-scale adoption in Europe is constrained by economic, legislative, and technical barriers. Future research should prioritize scaling emerging systems, optimizing by-product recovery, and improving integration with carbon capture and circular energy infrastructures. Supported by recent European policy frameworks, gasification is positioned to play a key role in sustainable waste-to-energy strategies, biomass valorization, and the transition to a low-emission economy. The transition toward a circular water economy addresses accelerating water scarcity and pollution. A PRISMA-2020 systematic review of 50 peer-reviewed articles (January 2018–April 2024) mapped current technologies and management strategies, seeking patterns, barriers, and critical bottlenecks. Bibliometric analysis revealed the following three dominant patterns: (i) rapid diffusion of membrane bioreactors, constructed wetlands, and advanced oxidation processes; (ii) research geographically concentrated in Asia and the European Union; (iii) industry’s marked preference for by-product valorization. Key barriers—high energy costs, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and low social acceptance—converge as critical constraints during scale-up. The following three practical action lines emerge: (1) adopt progressive tariffs and targeted tax credits that internalize environmental externalities; (2) harmonize water-reuse regulations with comparable circularity metrics; (3) create multi-actor platforms that co-design projects, boosting local legitimacy. These findings provide policymakers and water-sector practitioners with a clear roadmap for accelerating Sustainable Development Goals 6, 9, and 12 through circular, inclusive, low-carbon water systems. The rapid expansion of shrimp aquaculture has led to the generation of nutrient-rich effluents, which contribute to environmental degradation if inadequately managed. This study evaluated the potential of Dunaliella salina for the reuse of shrimp aquaculture wastewater (SAW) in biofloc production systems under varying dilution levels (0%, 25%, and 50%) and the simultaneous production of high-value biomass. Growth kinetics were modeled using a four-parameter logistic model, and nutrient removal, biochemical composition, and fatty acid profile were assessed. D. salina exhibited substantial growth in undiluted SAW, achieving over 80% removal of total nitrogen and reducing the organic load, as measured by a chemical oxygen demand reduction of more than 79%. In SAW treatments, the protein content ranged from 24.7% to 26.3%, while the lipid content reached up to 67.1% in a 25% SAW dilution. Chlorophyll a and total carotenoids were measured at 5.3–7 µg/mL and 4.1–5.7 µg/mL, respectively, in SAW treatments. The polyunsaturated fatty acid content in undiluted SAW was 34.5%, with α-linolenic acid (C18:3n3) and linoleic acid (C18:2n6) comprising 12% and 7.5%, respectively. This study demonstrates the ability of D. salina to valorize shrimp aquaculture wastewater in biofloc systems into lipid-rich, bioactive biomass, supporting its use in integrated aquaculture biotechnology systems for sustainable wastewater management and bioproduct generation. Valorization of Anaerobic Liquid Digestates Through Membrane Processing and Struvite Recovery—The Case of Dairy Effluents

An integrated process scheme is developed for valorizing filtered liquid digestates (FLD) from an industrial anaerobic digestion (AD) plant treating dairy-processing effluents with relatively low nutrient concentrations. The process scheme involves FLD treatment by nanofiltration (NF) membranes, followed by struvite recovery from the NF-retentate. An NF pilot unit (designed for this purpose) is combined with a state-of-the-art NF/RO process simulator. Validation of simulator results with pilot data enables reliable predictions required for scaling up NF systems. The NF permeate meets the standards for restricted irrigation and/or reuse. Considering the significant nutrient concentrations in the NF retentate (i.e., ~500 mg/L NH4-N, ~230 mg/L PO4-P), struvite recovery/precipitation is investigated, including determination of near-optimal processing conditions. Maximum removal of nutrients, through production of struvite-rich precipitate, is obtained at a molar ratio of NH4:Mg:PO4 = 1:1.5:1.5 and pH = 10 in the treated stream, attained through the addition of Κ2HPO4, ΜgCl2·6H2O, and NaOH. Furthermore, almost complete struvite precipitation is achieved within ~30 min, whereas precipitate/solid drying at modest/ambient temperature is appropriate to avoid struvite degradation. Under the aforementioned conditions, a significant amount of dry precipitate is obtained, i.e., ~12 g dry mass per L of treated retentate, including crystalline struvite. The approach taken and the obtained positive results provide a firm basis for further development of this integrated process scheme towards sustainable large-scale applications. Full article

Waste valorization involves reusing and recycling waste materials to create useful products such as materials, chemicals, fuels, or energy. The primary goal is the transition to a circular economy model while minimizing the impacts of hazardous waste. Adopting such policies appears to be a one-way path due to the continuous increase in the consumption of raw materials. According to recent projections, by 2050, 180 billion tonnes of materials will be consumed annually. Since natural resources cannot meet these requirements, new sources must be explored. Waste can serve as an alternative source and cover at least part of the needs that arise. In this work, good practices regarding waste valorization are presented. The case studies examined include the waste/by-products of ultrabasic rocks resulting in chromite and magnesite mining, as well as the tannery sludge produced after the corresponding wastewater treatment. Creole avocado is the second most widely produced and consumed variety of avocado globally. Due to its commercialization, limited studies have explored its potential for sustainable applications in biorefinery, particularly focusing on reusing the significant amount of waste generated during its consumption. This research evaluates thermodynamic energy losses of a Creole avocado extractive-based biorefinery, which are of critical importance during the fruit valorization process to determine the efficiency and possibilities of optimization, as well as sustainability impacts, through an exergy balance using computer-aided process engineering. The proposed method utilizes the whole fruit to produce three primary bioproducts, with a focus on implementation in the Montes de María region of Colombia. Following the extended mass and energy balance, an in-depth exergetic analysis was conducted, revealing that all process stages exhibited an exergetic efficiency exceeding 50%. The irreversibilities of the process were calculated as 7763.74 MJ/h, the total waste exergy was 2924.42 MJ/h, and the exergy from industrial waste amounted to 7800.42 MJ/h. These findings highlight the potential for optimizing the sustainability of avocado-based production systems through computer-aided analysis as an effective method. This approach accurately identifies exergy losses at each stage, providing precise numerical data and graphical representations. Additionally, it underscores not only the environmental benefits but also the contribution of these systems to enhancing energy efficiency in agro-industrial applications. Full article

Background: Food waste is a significant global issue with environmental, social, and economic consequences. In 2022, approximately 1.05 billion tons of food were wasted worldwide, with 220 million tons lost during the production and processing stages. Strategies to reduce food waste include full food utilization and the reuse of clean leftovers, which promote food security, efficient resource use, and the valorization of nutrients found in food. Objective: The aim of this study was to map existing scientific literature on nutritional intervention programs that incorporate full food utilization and the reuse of clean leftovers as tools for promoting sustainability and reducing food waste. The review seeks to consolidate existing knowledge, support public policy development, and encourage the adoption of sustainable food practices. Methods: A scoping review was conducted based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual and following the PRISMA-ScR checklist. The search was conducted in four scientific databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Virtual Health Library) and included articles published between 2014 and 2025. Intervention studies promoting full utilization of plant-based foods and the reuse of clean leftovers were included. Results: After analyzing 2268 studies, 14 relevant studies were selected, with interventions including culinary workshops and educational programs on using parts of food typically discarded, such as peels and seeds. These programs were successful in reducing waste and promoting more sustainable and nutritious diets. Conclusions: Nutritional intervention programs that promote full food utilization and clean leftover reuse are effective in reducing waste and fostering sustainable diets. To maximize their impact, these practices should be integrated into public policies and scaled in institutional settings such as schools, hospitals, and community kitchens. Full article

The valorization of dredged sediments (DS) presents a sustainable solution for managing waste while addressing resource scarcity and environmental concerns. This review explores treatment techniques and reuse options for DS, focusing on applications in the construction industry. However, disposal poses challenges due to potential contamination with heavy metals and organic pollutants. The study categorizes treatment approaches into physical, chemical, biological, and thermal processes. Physical methods, such as separation and dewatering, offer volume reduction but have limited capacities against chemically bound contaminants. Chemical treatments, including oxidation and immobilization, target specific pollutants but often entail high costs and environmental risks. Biological approaches, such as bioremediation and phytoremediation, provide sustainable, low-cost alternatives but require longer timescales. Thermal processes like pyrolysis and vitrification efficiently destroy or stabilize contaminants but involve high energy demands. Pyrolysis emerges as a particularly promising technology, combining effective decontamination with energy recovery and biochar production. Despite the advances in the area, the review identifies key barriers to large-scale DS reuse: contamination variability, lack of standardized guidelines, and limited long-term performance data. Future research should focus on integrated treatment strategies, such as combining DS with other industrial by-products, and optimization of processing, aiming to attain cost-effective, sustainable reuse. Overall, the valorization of treated DS supports circular-economy principles and offers significant environmental and economic benefits. Full article

Given the relevance of sustainability, this study analyzed the impacts on water consumption in the production chain of ornamental stone pieces (marble and granite) and quartz-based composites. The goal was to compare the water demand throughout the process, from extraction to manufacturing, using 1 m3 blocks as the unit of analysis. This study was conducted in Bahia, a state with significant ornamental stone production, located in a semi-arid region with limited water availability. The methodology included data collection from participating companies, combined with sectorial information and the Ecoinvent version 3.3 database, modeled using the SimaPro 8.0 software. The impact assessment was carried out using the AWaRE (Water Scarcity Footprint) and ReCiPe Endpoint methods, following the guidelines of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), as per ABNT NBR ISO 14040 standards. The results showed that marble and granite have lower water demand and environmental impact in the categories of particulate matter, human toxicity, ecotoxicity, eutrophication, and acidification when compared to quartz composites. The highest environmental impact occurred during the processing stage, which requires a large amount of water and generates effluents, losses, and particulate matter. The results indicate that marble and granite demand less water and exhibit lower environmental impacts—across categories like particulate matter, human toxicity, ecotoxicity, eutrophication, and acidification—than quartz composites. Notably, the processing stage incurred the highest environmental burden due to its intensive water use and consequent generation of effluents, losses, and particulate matter. These findings highlight the necessity of efficient water management and the adoption of circular economy principles—including water reuse and waste valorization—to promote long-term sustainability in the ornamental stone industry. Amid growing environmental concerns and the increasing demand for sustainable construction practices, the exploration of alternative materials in building applications has garnered significant attention. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the use of agricultural waste as an aggregate in cementitious composites, with a particular focus on palm kernel shells, coconut shells, hazelnut, peanut and pistachio shells, stone fruit shells and pits, date and grape seeds, rice husks, maize (corn) cobs, and sunflower seed shells. For each type of agro-waste, the paper discusses key physical and mechanical properties, global production volumes, and primary countries of origin. Furthermore, it offers an in-depth analysis of existing research on the incorporation of these materials into cement-based composites, highlighting both the advantages and limitations of their use. Although the integration of agro-waste into construction materials presents certain challenges, the vast quantities of agricultural residues generated globally underscore the urgency and potential of their reuse. In line with circular economy principles, this review advocates for the valorization of agro-waste through innovative and sustainable applications within the construction industry. Full article

The brewing sector is under increasing pressure to implement sustainable practices, particularly by integrating agro-industrial waste into its value chains. This study explores the potential of mango (Mangifera indica L.) residues as functional and sustainable ingredients within Brazil’s craft beer industry. A qualitative and exploratory methodology was employed, based on a literature review and political, economic, social, and technological (PEST) and strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analyses, to assess both the external and internal factors influencing the reuse of mango waste. The results highlight the environmental advantages and opportunities for value creation, especially in alignment with circular economy principles. Moreover, growing consumer interest in innovative and sustainable products presents an opportunity for market differentiation. Nonetheless, barriers such as limited infrastructure, cost-related challenges, regulatory constraints, and logistical limitations remain. By bridging sustainability, innovation, and waste minimization, this research offers strategic insights for stakeholders aiming to develop more resilient and responsible production chains. The valorization of mango waste contributes meaningfully to the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDGs 8, 9, and 12. Full article

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products are ubiquitous in daily life, offering convenience but posing significant environmental challenges due to their persistence and the difficulty of recycling them. Improper disposal of waste PET contributes to severe pollution and resource loss. Chemical degradation has emerged as one of the most effective methods for recovering and reusing waste PET. This article introduces a catalytic glycolysis strategy for efficient and environmentally sustainable PET recycling using potassium-rich biomass, specifically banana peels. The study demonstrated that K2O and K2CO3, derived from calcined banana peels, significantly catalyze the glycolysis of PET. Under optimal conditions, complete degradation of PET was achieved within 1.5 h at 180 °C, without additional chemical reagents. Product distribution confirmed that high-purity bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate could be obtained. The interaction between K2CO3 and ethylene glycol plays a critical role in determining the competition between glycolysis and alkaline hydrolysis. Furthermore, Density Functional Theory calculations provided valuable insights into the transesterification process during glycolysis. The reaction system also demonstrated excellent compatibility with colored PET products. This study successfully realized the simultaneous recycling of post-consumer PET and banana peels, offering a novel and sustainable approach to waste valorization. Full article
