Photovoltaic–thermal (PVT) technology has attracted considerable attention for its ability to significantly improve solar energy conversion efficiency by simultaneously providing electricity and heat during the day. PVT technology serves a purpose in condensers and subcoolers for passive cooling in refrigeration systems at night. In our previous work, we proposed a switchable film-insulated photovoltaic–thermal–passive cooling (PVT-PC) module to address the structural incompatibility between diurnal and nocturnal modes. However, the performance of the proposed module strongly depends on two key design parameters: the structural height and the vacuum level of the air cushion. In this study, a numerical model of the proposed module is developed to examine the impact of design and meteorological parameters on its all-day performance. The results show that diurnal performance remains stable across different structural heights, while nocturnal passive cooling power shows strong dependence on vacuum level and structural height, achieving up to 103.73 W/m2 at 10 mm height and 1500 Pa vacuum, which is comparable to unglazed PVT modules. Convective heat transfer enhancement, induced by changes in air cushion shape, is identified as the primary contributor to improved nocturnal cooling performance. Wind speed has minimal impact on electrical output but significantly enhances thermal efficiency and nocturnal convective cooling power, with a passive cooling power increase of up to 31.61%. In contrast, higher sky temperatures degrade nocturnal cooling performance due to diminished radiative exchange, despite improving diurnal thermal efficiency. These findings provide fundamental insights for optimizing the structural design and operational strategies of PVT-PC systems under varying environmental conditions. Full article

Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) windows present a viable path towards carbon neutrality in the building sector. However, conventional BIPV windows, such as semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) glazings, still suffer from inadequate thermal insulation, which limits their effectiveness across different climate conditions. To address this issue, the cadmium telluride-based vacuum PV glazing has been developed to enhance the thermal performance of BIPV applications. To fully understand the complex thermal behaviour under real-world operational scenarios, this study introduces a one-dimensional transient heat transfer model that can efficiently capture the time-dependent thermal dynamics of this novel glazing system. Based on the numerical solutions using the explicit finite difference method (FDM), the temperature profile of the vacuum PV glazing can be obtained dynamically. Consequently, the heat gain of the semi-transparent vacuum PV glazing can be calculated under time-varying outdoor and indoor conditions. The validated heat transfer model was applied under four different scenarios, viz. summer daytime, summer nighttime, winter daytime, and winter nighttime, to provide a detailed analysis of the dynamic thermal behaviour, including the temperature variation and the energy flow. The dynamic thermal characteristics of the vacuum PV glazing calculated by the transient heat transfer model demonstrate its excellent thermal insulation and solar control capabilities. Moreover, the thermal performance of vacuum PV glazing was compared with a standard double-pane window under various weather conditions of a typical summer day and a typical winter day. The results indicate that the vacuum PV glazing can effectively minimise both heat gain and heat loss. The fluctuation of the inner surface temperature can be controlled within a limited range away from the set point of the indoor room temperature. Therefore, the vacuum PV glazing contributes to stabilising the temperature of the indoor environment despite the fluctuating solar radiation and periodic outdoor temperature. It is suggested that the vacuum PV glazing has the potential to enhance the climate adaptability of BIPV windows under different climate backgrounds. Full article

In this study, the optimal design of the central pipe in a middle-deep geothermal heat pump (MD-GHP) system is studied using the response surface method to improve the system’s coefficient of performance (COP) and operational reliability. Firstly, a model describing the energy transfer and conversion mechanisms of the MD-GHP system, incorporating unsteady heat transfer in the central pipe, is established and validated using field test data. Secondly, taking the inner diameter, wall thickness, and effective thermal conductivity of the central pipe as design variables, the effects of these parameters on the COP of a 2700 m deep MD-GHP system are analyzed and optimized via the response surface method. The resulting optimal parameters are as follows: an inner diameter of 88 mm, a wall thickness of 14 mm, and an effective thermal conductivity of 0.2 W/(m·K). Based on these results, a composite central pipe composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), silica aerogels, and glass fiber tape is designed and fabricated. The developed pipe achieves an effective thermal conductivity of 0.13 W/(m·K) and an axial tensile force of 29,000 N at 105 °C. Compared with conventional PE and vacuum-insulated pipes, the composite central pipe improves the COP by 11% and 7%, respectively. This study proposes an optimization-based design approach for central pipe configuration in MD-GHP systems and presents a new composite pipe with enhanced thermal insulation and mechanical performance. Hydrogen-powered aircraft constitute a transformative innovation in aviation, motivated by the imperative for sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. This paper aims to concentrate on the design of hydrogen powertrains employing a system approach to propose representative design models for distribution and propulsion systems. Initially, the requirements for powertrain design are formalized, and a use-case-driven analysis is conducted to determine the functional and physical architectures. Subsequently, for each component pertinent to preliminary design, an analytical model is proposed for multidisciplinary analysis and optimization for powertrain sizing. A double-wall pipe model, incorporating foam and vacuum multi-layer insulation, was developed. The internal and outer pipes sizing were performed in accordance with standards for hydrogen piping design. Valves sizing is also considered in the present study, following current standards and using data available in the literature. Furthermore, models for booster pumps to compensate pressure drop and high-pressure pumps to elevate pressure at the combustion chamber entrance are proposed. Heat exchanger and evaporator models are also included and connected to a burning hydrogen engine in the sizing process. An optimal liner pipe diameter was identified, which minimizes distribution systems weight. We also expect a reduction in engine length and weight while maintaining equivalent thrust. Full article

In the context of global warming, building transformation takes on a dual responsibility to be more energy-efficient and sustainable for climate change mitigation and to be more climate-resilient for occupants’ comfort. The building energy retrofitting is an urgent need due to the large amount of existing building stock. Especially in high-rise and high-density cities under a subtropical climate, like Hong Kong, existing buildings with large glazed façades face the challenges of high energy consumption and overheating risks. An advanced glazing system, namely the vacuum insulating glazing (VIG), shows the potential for effective building envelope retrofitting due to its excellent thermal insulation ability. Yet, its performance for practical applications in the subtropical region has not been investigated. To enhance the energy performance and thermal comfort of existing high-rise buildings, this study proposed a novel retrofitting approach by integrating the VIG into the existing window system as secondary glazing. Field experiments were conducted in a commercial building in Hong Kong to investigate the thermal performance of the VIG retrofit application under real-world conditions. Furthermore, the energy-saving potential and thermal comfort performance of the VIG retrofit were evaluated by building energy simulations. The experimental results indicate that the VIG retrofit can effectively stabilize the fluctuation of the inside glass surface temperature and significantly reduce the heat gain by up to 85.3%. The simulation work shows the significant energy-saving potential of the VIG retrofit in Hong Kong. For the VIG retrofit cases under different scenarios, the energy-saving potential varies from 12.5% to 29.7%. In terms of occupants’ thermal comfort, the VIG retrofit can significantly reduce the overheating risk and improve thermal satisfaction by 9.2%. Due to the thermal comfort improvement, the cooling setpoint could be reset to 1 °C higher without compromising the overall thermal comfort. The average payback period for the VIG application is 5.8 years and 8.6 years for the clear glass retrofit and the coated glass retrofit, respectively. Therefore, the VIG retrofit approach provides a promising solution for building envelope retrofits under subtropical climate conditions. It not only benefits building owners and occupants but also contributes to achieving long-term climate resilience and the carbon neutrality of urban areas. Full article

Building facade insulation technologies have evolved from primitive thermal barriers to high-performance, multifunctional systems that enhance energy efficiency and indoor comfort. Historical insulation methods, such as thick masonry walls and timber-based construction, have gradually been replaced by advanced materials and innovative facade designs. Studies indicate that a significant proportion of a building’s heat loss occurs through its external walls and windows, highlighting the need for effective insulation strategies. The development of double-skin facades (D-SFSs), adaptive facades (AFs), and green facades has enabled substantial reductions in heating and cooling energy demands. Materials such as vacuum insulation panels (VIPs), aerogels, and phase change materials (PCMs) have demonstrated superior thermal resistance, contributing to improved thermal regulation and reduced carbon emissions. Green facades offer additional benefits by lowering surface temperatures and mitigating urban heat island effects, while D-SF configurations can reduce cooling loads by over 20% in warm climates. Despite these advancements, challenges remain regarding the initial investment costs, durability, and material sustainability. The future of facade insulation technologies is expected to focus on bio-based and recyclable insulation materials, enhanced thermal performance, and climate-responsive facade designs. This study provides a comprehensive review of historical and modern facade insulation technologies, examining their impact on energy efficiency, sustainability, and future trends in architectural design. As interest in liquid hydrogen (LH2) continues to grow within the energy and mobility sectors, so does the demand for testing capabilities at deep cryogenics temperatures. However, cost-, complexity-, and safety-related challenges associated with handling LH2 effectively limit the landscape of possible options. As an alternative, LH2 temperatures can be accessed via a helium-based cryogenic refrigerator, or “cryocooler”. Recently, NASA and its partners CB&I and Shell began the development of a cryocooler-based calorimeter to characterize the thermal performance of insulations and other materials down to 20 K. Deemed the Guarded Hot Cylinder (GHC), the apparatus utilizes a small vacuum chamber in conjunction with a GM cryocooler and trim heater to control the cold boundary temperature. A sealed, cylindrical copper cup bolts to the cryocooler and houses the material specimen, with an internal, cylindrical test heater assembly to maintain the warm boundary. The steady-state heat load, traveling radially through the specimen, is measured via the electrical input power to the test heater and then used to evaluate the material’s absolute thermal performance. Initial checkout and validation of the GHC using a common bulk-fill insulation material showed close agreement with published data from standardized LN2 boiloff calorimetry testing. The instrument is now considered a lab standard, with the goal of incorporating it into the ASTM C1774 standard in the future, and it is in continuous use, examining insulation materials for next-generation LH2 applications. This study investigates window renovation strategies for a detached building in Belper, UK, analyzing double- and triple-glazed, vacuum, and low-E vacuum windows with varying gas fillings, pillar radii, and spacing. The results reveal that increasing glass layers reduces energy consumption, while a larger pillar radius decreases efficiency. More pillars improve window performance. For windows with the same U-value, a higher SHGC enhances energy efficiency by maximizing solar heat gain, particularly in colder climates. Conversely, reducing the U-value while maintaining a constant SHGC enhances insulation and minimizes heat loss. The study emphasizes the necessity of balancing U-value and SHGC for optimal window performance in different climates. The most effective strategy involves using a low-E vacuum window with a 0.25 mm pillar radius and 40 mm spacing while doubling the south-facing window area, leading to a 7.01 GJ heating load reduction—a 27.9% improvement over modifying the window type alone. Additionally, a key ratio, SHGC/(UwindowUwall), is introduced to assess window size modifications. The results indicate that enlarging windows is beneficial when solar heat gain surpasses additional heat loss, underscoring the importance of balancing heat conduction and solar energy utilization in energy-efficient building design. In general, graphene is known to be thermally stable. In this study, we analyzed the Raman spectra of graphene prepared on copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) as well as monolayer and multilayer graphene transferred onto SiO2 under vacuum heating. We observed a shift in the position of the graphene G peak due to temperature changes for all substrates. For graphene on insulating substrates, the peak position returned to its original position after heating when the substrate returned to room temperature, indicating the thermal and chemical stability of graphene. In contrast, the Raman spectra of graphene on Cu and Ni, which have different carbon solubilities, showed significant shifts and broadening of the G peak as the temperature increased. We also utilized optical microscopy to observe morphological changes during heating, which complemented the Raman spectroscopy analysis. The optical microscopy images obtained in the previous study revealed morphological changes on the graphene surface that correlate with the shifts observed in the Raman spectra, especially in graphene on metal substrates. These combined findings from Raman spectroscopy and optical microscopy could provide insights for optimizing graphene growth processes. In addition, knowledge of the thermal behavior of graphene on insulating substrates could be useful for device construction. Full article

As environmental pollution has become a global concern, regulations on carbon emissions from maritime activities are being implemented, and interest in using renewable energy as fuel for ships is growing. Hydrogen, which does not release carbon dioxide and has a high energy density, can potentially replace fossil fuels as a renewable energy source. Notably, storage of hydrogen in a liquid state is considered the most efficient. In this study, a 0.7 m3 liquid hydrogen fuel tank suitable for small vessels was designed, and a structural analysis was conducted to assess its structural integrity. The extremely low liquefaction temperature of hydrogen at −253 °C and the need for spatial efficiency in liquid hydrogen fuel tanks make vacuum insulation essential to minimize the heat transfer due to convection. A composite insulation system of sprayed-on foam insulation (SOFI) and multilayer insulation (MLI) was applied in the vacuum annular space between the inner and outer shells, and a tube-shaped supporter made of a G-11 cryogenic (CR) material with low thermal conductivity and high strength was employed. The material selected for the inner and outer layers of the tank was STS 316L, which exhibits sufficient ductility and strength at cryogenic temperatures and has low sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement. The insulation performance was quantitatively assessed by calculating the boil-off rate (BOR) of the designed fuel tank. Structural integrity evaluations were conducted for nine load cases using heat transfer and structural analyses in accordance with the IGF code. Full article

Vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) have emerged as a cutting-edge strategy for achieving superior thermal insulation across a wide range of applications, including refrigerators, cold-chain transportation and building envelopes. The key factor for the exceptional performance of VIPs is maintaining an ultralow pressure environment within the panels, which is crucial for minimizing heat transfer. However, the presence of non-condensable gases can compromise the vacuum state, leading to a reduced insulation effectiveness during a panel’s service life. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of getter materials used in VIPs, focusing on their fundamental properties, types, integration techniques and performance characteristics, further emphasizing the challenges and potential directions for the development of getter materials. Exergy Analysis of a Convective Heat Pump Dryer Integrated with a Membrane Energy Recovery Ventilator

To increase energy efficiency, heat pump dryers and membrane dryers have been proposed to replace conventional fossil fuel dryers. Both conventional and heat pump dryers require substantial energy for condensing and reheating, while “active” membrane systems require vacuum pumps that are insufficiently developed. Lower temperature dehumidification systems make efficient use of membrane energy recovery ventilators (MERVs) that do not need vacuum pumps, but their high heat losses and lack of vapor selectivity have prevented their use in industrial drying. In this work, we propose an insulating membrane energy recovery ventilator for moisture removal from drying exhaust air, thereby reducing sensible heat loss from the dehumidification process and reheating energy. The second law analysis of the proposed system is carried out and compared with a baseline convective heat pump dryer. Irreversibilities in each component under different ambient temperatures (5–35 °C) and relative humidity (5–95%) are identified. At an ambient temperature of 35 °C, the proposed system substantially reduces sensible heat loss (47–60%) in the dehumidification process, resulting in a large reduction in condenser load (45–50%) compared to the baseline system. The evaporator in the proposed system accounts for up to 59% less irreversibility than the baseline system. A maximum of 24.5% reduction in overall exergy input is also observed. The highest exergy efficiency of 10.2% is obtained at an ambient condition of 35 °C and 5% relative humidity, which is more than twice the efficiency of the baseline system under the same operating condition. Vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) with cavities can be used in many applications, but their thermal bridge effect can be pronounced. In order to investigate the thermal bridge effect of VIPs with cavities, a numerical model was used for an analysis of the thermal bridge effect. The occurrence of the thermal bridge effect was investigated in nine groups of VIPs with different sizes and shapes of cavities. The results were experimentally verified. The results show that the effective heat transfer coefficient of VIPs decreases by 1.9% with an increase in the number of cavity sides, and the thermal bridge effect is much smaller with a larger number of cavity sides. The authors also found that an increase in the radius of the cavity tangent circle resulted in a more pronounced thermal bridge effect, with the effective thermal conductivity of the VIP increasing by 11.4%. In addition, the results obtained from the numerical analysis were verified by a simulation using COMSOL software (version 6.1). This study provides a reference for the variation rule of the thermal bridge effect in VIPs and reveals the numerical laws between the different parameters when the thermal bridge effect occurs. In recent years, industrial explosion accidents are frequent, causing serious negative influences on society. Mechanical shock waves, as a typical destructive factor in explosion accidents, can cause serious personal injury and building damage. In addition, actual explosion accidents usually involve heat sources, harming protective materials and personnel. In this study, we designed SiO2-aerogel-modified polyurea and studied the effects of manufacturing pressure process and the concentration of SiO2 aerogel on the mechanical shock wave mitigation and thermodynamic properties of the modified polyurea. The results show that the addition of SiO2 aerogel can improve the mechanical shock wave mitigation performance of polyurea. The maximum peak overpressure and acceleration mitigation rate of the material has reached 17.84% and 62.21%, respectively. The addition of SiO2 aerogel helps to reduce the thermal conductivity of materials and improve the thermal insulation performance, and the atmospheric pressure process is more conducive to improving the thermal insulation performance of materials. The minimum thermal conductivity of the material has reached 0.14174 W/m·K, which is 45.65% lower than that of pure polyurea. The addition of SiO2 aerogel has different effects on the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of polyurea. Using a vacuum process, the LOI value increased with the increase in the SiO2 aerogel concentration, while using atmospheric pressure, the LOI value increased but is always lower than 21% and lower than pure polyurea. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of SiO2 aerogel under the vacuum process was helpful to improve the thermal stability of materials. However, atmospheric pressure would disrupt the thermal stability, manifested in a decrease in peak degradation temperature, an increase in peak degradation rate, and a decrease in residual mass. This study investigated the heat transfer characteristics of composite multilayer insulation (MLI) materials used for the storage and transport of liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures. This research focused on analyzing the effects of thermal boundary temperature, total layer count, and vacuum level on the heat flux through the insulation material. Based on the layer-by-layer model, a heat transfer model of composite MLI was constructed. This research introduces a novel method for analyzing the heat transfer properties of composite MLI in the liquid hydrogen temperature range. Results indicate that heat flux increases with higher thermal boundary temperatures, with the MLI layers near the cold boundary playing a critical role in overall insulation performance. Additionally, numerical analysis was conducted to examine the impact of different material combinations and variations in vacuum level on heat transfer characteristics. Findings reveal that adding spray-on foam insulation reduces heat flux by 20.76% compared to using MLI alone. Furthermore, increasing the total number of MLI layers effectively mitigates heat flux increase, achieving an optimal heat flux of 0.5377 W/m2 with a total of 50 layers. Full article
