Background/Objectives: Malnutrition is a common problem in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to investigate the suitability and diagnostic performance of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) z-score in diagnosing wasting in children with CP, and its impact on diagnostic accuracy when evaluated concomitantly with additional clinical factors (birth weight, history of phototherapy). Methods: This single-center, cross-sectional study included 83 children with CP, aged 6 months–17 years, followed-up in our clinic. Anthropometric measurements (MUAC, Body Mass Index (BMI)) and clinical data (birth weight, history of phototherapy, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS)) were prospectively collected. Wasting was defined according to the BMI z-score ≤ −2 criteria. The diagnostic performance of MUAC z-score was evaluated by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. The contribution of additional covariates was examined using logistic regression analysis and the backward elimination method. Results: MUAC z-score alone demonstrated good discrimination in diagnosing wasting with an Area Under the Curve (AUC) value between 0.805 and 0.821, but its sensitivity was limited (67.0%). No statistically significant difference was found in diagnostic performance between MUAC measurements of the right arm, left arm, and the unaffected arm (p > 0.050). In logistic regression analysis, MUAC z-score (p = 0.001), birth weight (p = 0.014), and a history of phototherapy (p = 0.046) were found to be significantly associated with wasting malnutrition. The simplified model including these variables yielded an AUC value of 0.876. Conclusions: MUAC z-score is a usable tool for wasting malnutrition screening in children with CP. Although its sensitivity is limited when used alone, its diagnostic accuracy increases when evaluated concomitantly with additional clinical factors such as birth weight and a history of phototherapy. This combined approach may offer clinicians a more robust tool for the early diagnosis and management of wasting malnutrition in children with CP. Full article

Infants discriminate faces early in the first year, but research on infants’ discrimination of bodies is plagued by mixed findings. Using a familiarisation novelty preference method, we investigated 7- and 9-month-old infants’ discrimination of body postures presented in upright and inverted orientations, and with and without heads, along with relationships with gross and fine motor development. In our initial studies, 7-month-old infants discriminated upright headless postures with forward-facing and about-facing images. Eye tracking revealed that infants looked at the bodies of the upright headless postures the longest and at the heads of upright whole figures for 60–70% of the time regardless of the presence of faces, suggesting that heads detract attention from bodies. In a more stringent test, with similarly complex limb positions between test items, infants could not discriminate postures. With longer trials, the 7-month-olds demonstrated a familiarity preference for the upright whole figures, and the 9-month-olds demonstrated a novelty preference, albeit with a less robust effect. Unlike previous studies, we found that better gross motor skills were related to the 7-month-olds’ better discrimination of upright headless postures compared to inverted postures. The 9-month-old infants’ lower gross and fine motor skills were associated with a stronger preference for inverted compared to upright whole figures. This is further evidence of a configural representation of bodies in infancy, but it is constrained by an upper bias (heads in upright figures, feet in inverted), the test item similarity, and the trial duration. The measure and type of motor development reveals differential relationships with infants’ representations of bodies. Full article

The present study aims to investigate the multi-year effects (5 years) of individualized whole-body vibration (WBV) on locomotion, postural control, and handgrip strength in a 68-year-old man with relapse remitting multiple sclerosis (PwRRMS). The dose–response relationship induced by a single session was quantified by determining the surface electromyographic activity (sEMG) of the participant. The participant wore an orthosis to limit the lack of foot dorsiflexion in the weakest limb during walking in daily life. The gait alteration during walking was assessed at 1, 2 and 3 km/h (without the orthosis) through angle–angle diagrams by quantifying the area, perimeter and shape of the loops, and the sEMG of leg muscles was recorded in both limbs. The evaluation of postural control was conducted during upright standing by quantifying the displacement of the center of pressure (CoP). The handgrip strength was assessed by measuring the force–time profile synchronized with the sEMG activity of upper arm muscles. The participant improved his ability to walk at higher speeds (2–3 km/h) without the orthosis. There were greater improvements in the area and perimeter of angle–angle diagrams for the weakest limb (Δ = 36–51%). The sEMG activity of the shank muscles increased at all speeds, particularly in the tibialis anterior of weakest limbs (Δ = 10–68%). The CoP displacement during upright standing decreased (Δ = 40–60%), whereas the handgrip strength increased (Δ = 32% average). Over the 5-year period of intervention, the individualized WBV improved locomotion, postural control and handgrip strength without side effects. Future studies should consider the possibility of implementing an individualized WBV in PwRRMS. Full article

Exoskeletons transfer loads to the human body via physical human–exoskeleton interfaces (pHEI). However, the human–exoskeleton interaction remains poorly understood, and the mechanical properties of the pHEI are not well characterized. Therefore, we present a novel methodology to precisely characterize pHEI interaction stiffnesses under various loading conditions. Forces and torques were applied in three orthogonal axes to the upper arm pHEI of 21 subjects using an electromechanical apparatus. Interaction loads and displacements were measured, and stiffness data were derived as well as mathematically described using linear and non-linear regression models, yielding all the diagonal elements of the stiffness tensor. We find that the non-linear nature of pHEI stiffness is best described using exponential functions, though we also provide linear approximations for simplified modeling. We identify statistically significant differences between loading conditions and report median translational stiffnesses between 2.1 N/mm along and 4.5 N/mm perpendicular to the arm axis, as well as rotational stiffnesses of 0.2 N·m/° perpendicular to the arm, while rotations around the longitudinal axis are almost an order of magnitude smaller (0.03 N·m/°). The resulting stiffness models are suitable for use in digital human–exoskeleton models, potentially leading to more accurate estimations of biomechanical efficacy and discomfort of exoskeletons. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Xsens motion capture system in performing ergonomic analysis compared to traditional manual assessments by experts in the specific environment of assembly lines. A comprehensive literature review emphasizes the need to investigate the reliability of new, promising high-tech systems. The main objective was therefore to compare the Ergonomic Assessment Worksheet (EAWS) assessment approach performed with Xsens motion capture technology and Process Simulate V16 software with the manual method using EAWS digital prepared by experts in the controlled workflow. The greatest value of the research conducted lies in the novel integration of the state-of-the-art Xsens motion capture technology with the Process Simulate V16 software environment and the use of the licensed EAWS ergonomic method and Methods-Time Measurement Universal Analyzing System (MTM-UAS). The results are presented in the form of a case study. The results show a large similarity between the whole-body results and a large difference in the upper limb results, confirming the initial benefits of the Xsens equipment but also pointing to the need to verify its reliability on larger samples. The study highlights the potential of integrating Xsens motion capture data into ergonomic assessments and tuning of the assembly line to increase productivity and worker safety. Full article

Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between the level of physical activity and body composition, and the levels of motor skills and strength in overweight and obese men. Methods: The research involved 64 men. Body composition, physical activity, motor control, Motor Control Test (MCT), and strength variables were evaluated. Body composition was assessed by DXA, and the participants were classified into two groups according to the percentage of total fat mass: greater and less than 27.65%. Physical activity was assessed using accelerometry, and motor control was measured with posturography, which provided a composite score of motor performance and postural control effectiveness. Strength was assessed using hand, leg, and back dynamometers. Results: The participants with a higher percentage of body fat had a lower DSI (Dynamic Strength Index) (p < 0.001) and significantly reduced PAL (physical activity level) and energy expenditure (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found in the muscle strength of the upper limbs (p = 0.06) and lower limbs (p = 0.419). With regard to MCT, there was a significant difference between groups in the backward direction (p = 0.041), with the group with the highest percentage of body fat showing lower values. Conclusions: Individuals with a higher percentage of body fat tend to have lower levels of strength, physical activity, and energy expenditure, which can lead to impaired balance. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve body composition and levels of strength and physical activity, with a positive impact on general health and quality of life. Emphasis should be placed on improving physical activity levels in male individuals with a higher percentage of fat mass to improve their body composition and dynamic strength levels, which are beneficial to life, particularly to help improve postural control. Mid-infrared passive spectroscopic imaging is a novel non-invasive and remote sensing method based on Planck’s law. It enables the acquisition of component-specific information from the human body by measuring naturally emitted thermal radiation in the mid-infrared region. Unlike active methods that require an external light source, our passive approach harnesses the body’s own emission, thereby enabling safe, long-term monitoring. In this study, we successfully demonstrated the simultaneous, non-invasive measurements of blood glucose and lactate levels of the human body using this method. The measurements, conducted over approximately 80 min, provided emittance data derived from mid-infrared passive spectroscopy that showed a temporal correlation with values obtained using conventional blood collection sensors. Furthermore, to evaluate localized metabolic changes, we performed k-means clustering analysis of the spectral data obtained from the upper arm. This enabled visualization of time-dependent lactate responses with spatial resolution. These results demonstrate the feasibility of multi-component monitoring without physical contact or biological sampling. The proposed technique holds promise for translation to medical diagnostics, continuous health monitoring, and sports medicine, in addition to facilitating the development of next-generation healthcare technologies. Maintaining body symmetry in sports characterized by high lateralization is crucial for optimizing long-term athletic performance and mitigating injury risk. This study aimed to evaluate the extent of morphological asymmetry in anthropometric features among elite professional fencers. Additionally, the presence of functional asymmetry and its associations with morphological asymmetry were assessed. Thirty-two Polish adult female fencers, aged 18–33 yrs, were examined. Data collection involved a questionnaire survey, anthropometric measurements, calculation of anthropological indices, and assessment of functional asymmetry. For the 24 bilateral anthropometric features, small differences were found in seven characteristics: foot length, subscapular skinfold thickness, upper arm circumference, minimum and maximum forearm circumference, upper limb length, and arm circumference in tension. Morphological asymmetry index did not exceed 5%. Left-sided lateralization of either the upper or lower limbs was associated with significantly high asymmetry, specifically indicating larger minimum forearm circumferences in the right limb. Continuous, individualized monitoring of morphological asymmetry and its direction in athletes is essential, demanding concurrent consideration of functional lateralization. This ongoing assessment establishes a critical baseline for evaluating training adaptations, reducing injury susceptibility, and optimizing rehabilitation strategies. Deeper investigation of symmetry within non-dominant limbs is warranted to enhance our understanding. Full article

Body composition is associated with multiple factors. The main objective of this study is to determine the association between diet and sociodemographic factors on the body structure and composition of university students at a public university in Ecuador. This cross-sectional study allowed for the collection of detailed body composition and dietary data from 204 students (41.7% men and 58.3% women, with an average age of 23.3 ± 4.4 years). The study was conducted using validated questionnaires and bioimpedance techniques. Statistical analysis included ANOVA tests, complemented by a PCA-Biplot, to examine the relationships between study variables. Statistical analysis revealed that men’s birthplace had a significant impact on several body measurements, such as hip circumference and weight, but no significant differences were observed in body structure and composition based on nutrient intake. Furthermore, larger upper-arm circumference in women was correlated with higher fat intake. The results of the multivariate analysis indicated a differential influence of dietary components on body composition. The study highlights the need for nutritional intervention strategies and educational programs that consider the diversity of students’ backgrounds to promote healthy habits and mitigate the negative effects of eating habits and irregular physical activity patterns on their health and body composition. Relationship Between Early and Maximal Isometric Upper-Body Push and Pull Force Production Among Elite Female and Male Swedish Track and Field Throwers

Maximal and explosive strength—defined as the ability to rapidly generate high levels of force—are widely recognized as critical for performance in strength–power sports such as track and field throwing. However, their interrelationship remains insufficiently examined, particularly in the upper body of elite athletes. This study examined the relationship between early force production (≤250 ms, subdivided into early phase: 0–100 ms; late phase: 100–250 ms) and peak isometric upper-body push and pull force in elite Swedish track and field throwers. A total of 30 athletes (17 females, 13 males; aged 18–34 years), all competing nationally or internationally in discus, hammer, shot put, or javelin, participated in a cross-sectional assessment. Isometric force was measured during bench press (push) and supine bench row (pull) using a custom-built device. Force output was recorded at 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 ms, along with peak force. The results showed a progressive increase in the correlation between force at early time points and peak force. Associations were weak to moderate at 50–100 ms (r = 0.07–0.55) and became strong to very strong at 150–250 ms (r = 0.64–0.92). These patterns were consistent across sexes and test types. The findings suggest that maximal strength becomes increasingly important as force production time extends beyond 100 ms. Coaches may benefit from assessing both early and peak force characteristics to inform strength profiling and guide training focus, though further research is needed to determine their impact on performance. Ensuring proper sizing and fit for U.S. female firefighters’ personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) is a crucial challenge for researchers and manufacturers. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) establishes design and performance standards in the U.S., with NFPA 1977 specifying sizing guidelines for wildland firefighting gear. However, the absence of an anthropometric database representing female firefighters limits the effectiveness of these standards. This research evaluates the effectiveness of NFPA 1977 sizing system by investigating whether correlated body measurements maintain internal consistency and provide data-driven recommendations for improvement. Anthropometric data from 187 U.S. female firefighters were analyzed to assess the 2016 and 2022 NFPA 1977 upper and lower torso sizing systems. Correlation analysis was performed between body measurements and corresponding sizes. Contingency tables presented proportion of participants accommodated. Results indicated significant correlations between chest and wrist measurements and sizes in the upper torso, though these were the only available measurements. In the lower torso, hip size strongly correlated with thigh and knee sizes. However, the system inadequately accommodates female firefighters with larger waist and hip measurements. Furthermore, rise sizes demonstrated inconsistent, weak relationships with hip circumference. Overall, the NFPA 1977 sizing requires revision to better serve U.S. female firefighters. Full article

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a debilitating complication in breast cancer survivors, with axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) as the greatest independent risk factor. Beyond non-surgical therapies such as complete decongestive and compression therapy, there has been increased interest in immediate microsurgical reconstruction via immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) anastomosing transected lymphatic vessels to a local venous recipient at the time of ALND to mitigate the risks of BCRL. This work provides a scoping review of the landscape surrounding ILR, spanning the updated literature investigating patient outcomes, current accepted best practices, and critical components of surgical techniques for a successful multidisciplinary approach. While limited by heterogeneity in the methods of lymphedema detection, a growing body of work demonstrates the protective effects of ILR. From the pioneering work by Boccardo et al. in 2009 and his introduction of Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventive Healing Approach (LYMPHA) using an intussusception-type end-to-end microanastmosis, to the first randomized control trial by Coriddi in 2023, which importantly employed relative upper extremity volume change as an outcome measure to circumvent the confounding effects of body size and BMI, the current literature supports ILR following ALND in the prevention of BCRL. Collaboration between the oncologic breast surgeon and reconstructive microsurgeon are central to the success of ILR. Critical components for operative success include preoperative and intraoperative lymphatic mapping, preservation of suitable venous targets, availability of supermicrosurgical instruments and sutures, as well as aptitude with a variety of microsurgical anastomotic techniques. A Case Series on the Efficacy of the Pharmacological Treatment of Lipedema: The Italian Experience with Exenatide

Background: Lipedema is a chronic disease of subcutaneous adipose tissue that predominantly affects women and is frequently associated with endocrinopathies such as insulin resistance and obesity. Its pathogenesis is still unclear, and treatment, which requires a multi-disciplinary approach, is prolonged over time and is not always effective. There is currently no drug treatment available for this disease. Methods: Five different cases of women with lipedema and insulin resistance, treated with Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and once-weekly exenatide, in association or not with lifestyle changes (diet or physical activity) for 3 to 6 months are described. Changes in anthropometric parameters, symptoms, clinical findings and the thickness of superficial adipose tissue measured by ultrasound were evaluated. Results: Treatment with exenatide, whether combined with a change in diet or physical activity, resulted in a reduction in the characteristic symptoms of lipedema, in pain evoked by pinching the adipose tissue fold and in the thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue at the levels of the lower limbs, abdomen and upper limbs. In four out of five cases, a reduction in body weight was observed, particularly during the first three months of treatment and in cases with greater metabolic impairment. Clinical, instrumental and subjective improvements were also observed in cases where there was no reduction in body weight and in patients who had previously undergone lower limb liposuction. Conclusions: The improvement in symptoms and clinical signs of lipedema, in addition to the reduction in adipose tissue in patients with lipedema and insulin resistance with exenatide, suggests a novel pharmacological approach to the disease, which can be combined with other conservative and surgical treatments to promote weight reduction. These results also highlight the association of this disease with metabolic alterations and the fundamental role of an accurate diagnosis followed by the treatment of comorbidities and excess weight in these patients. Silurus lanzhouensis is a large-sized commercial fish species endemic to the mid-upper reaches of the Yellow River, serving as a “Card of Aquatic Biological Species in the Yellow River”. However, due to factors such as overfishing and habitat changes, it has been listed as an endangered species. In order to protect and restore its wild resources, we conducted a detailed study for the first time from 2022 to 2024 on the age composition, growth characteristics, mortality rate, and current status of resource exploitation of the S. lanzhouensis population in the upper Yellow River. A total of 489 individuals underwent measurements for their total length (L) and body weight (W), with age determination conducted using lapillus otoliths. The collected samples exhibited a spectrum of total lengths spanning from 2.5 to 63.7 cm, body weights ranging from 0.11 to 1974.15 g, and ages ranging from 1 to 6 years. Further analysis of the length–weight relationships unveiled an allometric growth index (b) of 2.9562 for the overall samples, indicating an isometric growth pattern. Additionally, insights into the growth characteristics of S. lanzhouensis were provided by the von Bertalanffy growth function, revealing an asymptotic total length (L) of 119.30 cm and a growth coefficient (K) of 0.1278 yr−1. The growth characteristic index (φ) totaled 3.2598, suggesting a moderate growth rate in comparison to other Silurus species. The total mortality rate (Z) recorded for the population of S. lanzhouensis was found to be 0.5296 yr−1. Through the application of three distinct methodologies on exhaustive samples, the average natural mortality rate (M) was calculated to be 0.3105 yr−1. Consequently, the fishing mortality rate (F) for the entire sample set was determined to be 0.2191 yr−1, leading to an exploitation rate (E) of 0.4137. Based on the survey findings, it is evident that the population of S. lanzhouensis has not been subjected to over-exploitation, attributable to ongoing stock enhancement. These results also provide foundational data for the protection and restoration of S. lanzhouensis in the upper Yellow River. Full article

Effects of Cold-Water Immersion on Muscle Damage Markers, Physical Performance, and Skin Temperature of Kung Fu Athletes

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of cold-water immersion (CWI) on post-training recovery in Kung Fu athletes. Methods: In a 3-week crossover design, 16 Kung Fu athletes (22.00 ± 5.95 years, 76.90 ± 9.74 kg) were divided into two conditions: CWI and passive recovery as a control (CON) measure. Through the study, muscle damage markers (creatine kinase [CK], lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], aspartate aminotransferase [AST] and alanine aminotransferase [ALT]), physical performance tests (upper limbs power, SJ and CMJ), skin temperature (from lower and upper limbs), and skin temperature asymmetries were measured. Results: CWI resulted in a higher reduction of CK concentration than CON 24 h after the intervention (−21.32%; p < 0.001). The SJ height 24 h after the intervention was higher in the CWI than in the CON (p < 0.001). Both CWI and CON resulted in skin temperature returning to baseline levels 24 h after intervention. Conclusions: CWI was effective in restoring muscle power, reducing muscle damage and reducing body temperature (BT) in Kung Fu athletes. Cold water recovery showed better muscle power and strength 24 and 48 h after training when compared to the passive method. CK and skin temperature were better 24 h after cold water recovery.
