Fruit flies that belong to the genus Zeugodacus (Diptera: Tephritidae) pose significant threats as invasive pests of agricultural crops in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The intensification of transboundary trade in fresh horticultural produce has increased the risk of introducing invasive species such as fruit flies, more so through the inadvertent transport of their immature developmental stages. Such immature stages of fruit flies belonging to the Tephritidae family are frequently intercepted at the international borders worldwide and are unable to be identified to the species level using morphological characteristics. Molecular identification using mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene has proven to be quite useful, as they are not constrained by developmental stages, sex, or colour morphs of the pest species in question. Also, real-time PCR-based species-specific assays offer quicker turnaround time since they do not require any post-PCR procedures. This study evaluated the utility of a real-time PCR assay based on the COI gene region to identify Zeugodacus cucurbitae from other Tephritid species. The developed real-time PCR assay provides a swift and precise way of discriminating between these highly invasive pest species during an interception event for rapid decision making. High specificity, having no cross-reactions with closely related Tephritids, and sensitivity of the developed assay will be extremely useful in discriminating Z. cucurbitae from other closely related fruit fly species. Z. cucurbitae-specific real-time PCR developed in this study is appropriate for organizations that carry out routine diagnostics to facilitate fresh produce imports and exports. Our assay is fully optimized for rapid deployment at international borders, offering reliable detection of the target species regardless of developmental stage, sex, or geographic origins. The transportation sector is a major consumer of primary energy and is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable transportation requires identifying and quantifying factors influencing transport-related CO2 emissions. This research aims to establish an adaptable, precise, and transparent forecasting structure for transport CO2 emissions of the United States. For this reason, we proposed a multi-stage method that incorporates explainable Machine Learning (ML) and Feature Selection (FS), guaranteeing interpretability in comparison to conventional black-box models. Due to high multicollinearity among 24 initial variables, hierarchical feature clustering and multi-step FS were applied, resulting in five key predictors: Total Primary Energy Imports (TPEI), Total Fossil Fuels Consumed (FFT), Annual Vehicle Miles Traveled (AVMT), Air Passengers-Domestic and International (APDI), and Unemployment Rate (UR). Four ML methods—Support Vector Regression, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, ElasticNet, and Multilayer Perceptron—were employed, with ElasticNet outperforming the others with RMSE = 45.53, MAE = 30.6, and MAPE = 0.016. SHAP analysis revealed AVMT, FFT, and APDI as the top contributors to CO2 emissions. This framework aids policymakers in making informed decisions and setting precise investments. Full article

This paper presents the design and implementation of a high-precision vehicle detection and classification system for toll stations on national highways in Colombia, leveraging LiDAR-based 3D point cloud processing and supervised machine learning. The system integrates a multi-sensor architecture, including a LiDAR scanner, high-resolution cameras, and Doppler radars, with an embedded computing platform for real-time processing and on-site inference. The methodology covers data preprocessing, feature extraction, descriptor encoding, and classification using Support Vector Machines. The system supports eight vehicular categories established by national regulations, which present significant challenges due to the need to differentiate categories by axle count, the presence of lifted axles, and vehicle usage. These distinctions affect toll fees and require a classification strategy beyond geometric profiling. The system achieves 89.9% overall classification accuracy, including 96.2% for light vehicles and 99.0% for vehicles with three or more axles. It also incorporates license plate recognition for complete vehicle traceability. The system was deployed at an operational toll station and has run continuously under real traffic and environmental conditions for over eighteen months. This framework represents a robust, scalable, and strategic technological component within Intelligent Transportation Systems and contributes to data-driven decision-making for road management and toll operations. According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, between 2013 and 2023, 62% of aviation accidents occurred during the approach, landing, and post-impact phases of flight. Hence, this study targets factors contributing to increased accident rates during the final stages of flight. It will review how pilot experience influences decision-making and identifies mitigation strategies, focusing on go-arounds to prevent accidents during these critical phases. Surveys and roundtable discussions were conducted to identify factors influencing pilot performance during approach, landing, and go-around manoeuvres. By using a mixed-methods approach that combined thematic and statistical analyses, key safety factors were identified, including situational awareness, decision-making, and operational complexity. The study also examined the relationship between experience and decision-making, highlighting areas for targeted interventions to improve safety. The research emphasises the importance of integrating decision-making considerations into training programmes and connecting these to human factors. Through identifying areas for improvement, this study offers a safety-driven framework to address decision-making challenges during approach, landing, and go-around phases, with the objective of reducing accident and incident rates in general aviation. Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and Group Rapid Transit (GRT) are classes of fully automated public transport systems, where passengers can travel in small vehicles on an interconnected, grade-separated network of guideways, non-stop, from origin to destination. PRT and GRT are considered sustainable as they are low-emission and able to attract car drivers. The parameterized cost modeling framework developed in this paper has the advantage that profitability of different PRT/GRT systems can be rapidly verified in a transparent way and in function of a variety of relevant system parameters. This framework may contribute to a more transparent, rapid, and low-cost evaluation of PRT/GRT schemes for planning and decision-making purposes. The main innovation is the introduction of the “peak hour network saturation” S: the number of vehicles in circulation during peak hour divided by the maximum number of vehicles running at line speed with minimum time headways. It is an index that aggregates the main uncertainties in the planning process, namely the demand level relative to the supply level. Furthermore, a maximum S can be estimated for a PRT/GRT project, even without a detailed demand estimation. The profit per trip is analytically derived based on S and a series of more certain parameters, such as fares, capital and maintenance costs, daily demand curve, empty vehicle share, and physical properties of the system. To demonstrate the ability of the framework to analyze profitability in function of various parameters, we apply the methods to a single vehicle PRT, a platooned PRT, and a mixed PRT/GRT. The results show that PRT services with trip length proportional fares could be profitable already for S>0.25. The PRT capacity, profitability, and robustness to tripled infrastructure costs can be increased by vehicle platooning or GRT service during peak hours. Full article

Emerging transportation challenges necessitate cutting-edge technologies for real-time infrastructure and traffic monitoring. To create a dynamic digital twin for intersection monitoring, data gathering, performance assessment, and calibration of microsimulation software, this study presents a state-of-the-art platform that combines high-resolution LiDAR sensor data with VISSIM simulation software. Intending to track traffic flow and evaluate important factors, including congestion, delays, and lane configurations, the platform gathers and analyzes real-time data. The technology allows proactive actions to improve safety and reduce interruptions by utilizing the comprehensive information that LiDAR provides, such as vehicle trajectories, speed profiles, and lane changes. The digital twin technique offers unparalleled precision in traffic and infrastructure state monitoring by fusing real data streams with simulation-based performance analysis. The results show how the platform can transform real-time monitoring and open the door to data-driven decision-making, safer intersections, and more intelligent traffic data collection methods. Using the proposed platform, this study calibrated a VISSIM simulation network to optimize the driving behavior parameters in the software. This study addresses current issues in urban traffic management with real-time solutions, demonstrating the revolutionary impact of emerging technology in intelligent infrastructure monitoring. Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is a fundamental technology in the development of intelligent transportation systems, encompassing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), and pedestrian (V2P) communications. This technology enables connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) to interact with their surroundings, significantly enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and driving comfort. However, as V2X communication becomes more widespread, it becomes a prime target for adversarial and persistent cyberattacks, posing significant threats to the security and privacy of CAVs. These challenges are compounded by the dynamic nature of vehicular networks and the stringent requirements for real-time data processing and decision-making. Much research is on using novel technologies such as machine learning, blockchain, and cryptography to secure V2X communications. Our survey highlights the security challenges faced by V2X communications and assesses current ML and blockchain-based solutions, revealing significant gaps and opportunities for improvement. Specifically, our survey focuses on studies integrating ML, blockchain, and multi-access edge computing (MEC) for low latency, robust, and dynamic security in V2X networks. Based on our findings, we outline a conceptual framework that synergizes ML, blockchain, and MEC to address some of the identified security challenges. This integrated framework demonstrates the potential for real-time anomaly detection, decentralized data sharing, and enhanced system scalability. The survey concludes by identifying future research directions and outlining the remaining challenges for securing V2X communications in the face of evolving threats. Full article

This study presents an integrated geospatial framework for assessing the risk to high-speed railway (HSR) infrastructure, combining a persistent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PS-InSAR) analysis with multi-criteria decision-making in a geographic information system (GIS) environment. Focusing on the Honam HSR corridor in South Korea, the model incorporates both maximum ground deformation and subsidence velocity to construct a dynamic hazard index. Social vulnerability is quantified using five demographic and infrastructural indicators, and a two-stage analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied with dependency correction to mitigate inter-variable redundancy. The resulting high-resolution risk maps highlight spatial mismatches between geotechnical hazards and social exposure, revealing vulnerable segments in Gongju and Iksan that require prioritized maintenance and mitigation. The framework also addresses data limitations by interpolating groundwater levels and estimating train speed using spatial techniques. Designed to be scalable and transferable, this methodology offers a practical decision-support tool for infrastructure managers and policymakers aiming to enhance the resilience of linear transport systems. Produce supply chains play a critical role in ensuring fruits and vegetables reach consumers efficiently, affordably, and at optimal freshness. In recent decades, hub-and-spoke network models have emerged as valuable tools for optimizing sustainable cold food supply chains. Traditional optimization efforts typically focus on removing inefficiencies, minimizing lead times, refining inventory management, strengthening supplier relationships, and leveraging technological advancements for better visibility and control. However, the majority of models rely on deterministic approaches that overlook the inherent uncertainties of crop yields, which are further intensified by climate variability. Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, along with shifting temperature patterns and extreme weather events, have a substantial effect on crop productivity and availability. Such uncertainties can prompt distributors to seek alternative sources, increasing costs due to supply chain reconfiguration. This research introduces a stochastic hub-and-spoke network optimization model specifically designed to minimize transportation expenses by determining optimal distribution routes that explicitly account for climate variability effects on crop yields. A use case involving a cold food supply chain (CFSC) was carried out using several weather scenarios based on climate models and real soil data for California. Strawberries were selected as a representative crop, given California’s leading role in strawberry production. Simulation results show that scenarios characterized by increased rainfall during growing seasons result in increased yields, allowing distributors to reduce transportation costs by sourcing from nearby farms. Conversely, scenarios with reduced rainfall and lower yields require sourcing from more distant locations, thereby increasing transportation costs. Nonetheless, supply chain configurations may vary depending on the choice of climate models or weather prediction sources, highlighting the importance of regularly updating scenario inputs to ensure robust planning. This tool aids decision-making by planning climate-resilient supply chains, enhancing preparedness and responsiveness to future climate-related disruptions. Full article

The accelerating integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into contemporary transportation infrastructure has underscored significant limitations in traditional charging paradigms, particularly in accommodating heterogeneous user requirements within dynamic operational environments. This study presents a differentiated optimization framework for EV charging strategies through the systematic classification of user types. A multidimensional decision-making environment is established for three representative user categories—residential, commercial, and industrial—by synthesizing time-variant electricity pricing models with dynamic carbon emission pricing mechanisms. A bi-level optimization architecture is subsequently formulated, leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to capture user-specific demand characteristics through customized reward functions and adaptive constraint structures. Validation is conducted within a high-fidelity simulation environment featuring 90 autonomous EV charging agents operating in a metropolitan parking facility. Empirical results indicate that the proposed typology-driven approach yields a 32.6% average cost reduction across user groups relative to baseline charging protocols, with statistically significant improvements in expenditure optimization (p < 0.01). Further interpretability analysis employing gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) demonstrates that the model’s attention mechanisms are well aligned with theoretically anticipated demand prioritization patterns across the distinct user types, thereby confirming the decision-theoretic soundness of the framework. Global supply chains often face uncertainties in production lead times, fluctuating exchange rates, and varying tariff regulations, all of which can significantly impact total profit. To address these challenges, this study formulates a multi-country supply chain problem as a Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP), integrating both currency variability and tariff levels. Using a Q-learning-based method (SMART), we explore three scenarios: (1) wide currency gaps under a uniform tariff, (2) narrowed currency gaps encouraging more local sourcing, and (3) distinct tariff structures that highlight how varying duties can reshape global fulfillment decisions. Beyond these baselines we analyze uncertainty-extended variants and targeted sensitivities (quantity discounts, tariff escalation, and the joint influence of inventory holding costs and tariff costs). Simulation results, accompanied by policy heatmaps and performance metrics, illustrate how small or large shifts in exchange rates and tariffs can alter sourcing strategies, transportation modes, and inventory management. A Deep Q-Network (DQN) is also applied to validate the Q-learning policy, demonstrating alignment with a more advanced neural model for moderate-scale problems. These findings underscore the adaptability of reinforcement learning in guiding practitioners and policymakers, especially under rapidly changing trade environments where exchange rate volatility and incremental tariff changes demand robust, data-driven decision-making. Previous reviews have examined specific facets of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in transportation planning, such as transit-focused applications and open source geospatial tools. However, this study offers the first systematic, PRISMA-guided longitudinal evaluation of GIS integration in transportation planning, spanning thematic domains, data models, methodologies, and outcomes from 2004 to 2024. This study addresses this gap through a longitudinal analysis of GIS-based transportation research from 2004 to 2024, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. By conducting a mixed-methods analysis of 241 peer-reviewed articles, this study delineates major trends, such as increased emphasis on sustainability, equity, stakeholder involvement, and the incorporation of advanced technologies. Prominent domains include land use–transportation coordination, accessibility, artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring, and policy evaluation. Expanded data sources, such as real-time sensor feeds and 3D models, alongside sophisticated modeling techniques, enable evidence-based, multifaceted decision-making. However, challenges like data limitations, ethical concerns, and the need for specialized expertise persist, particularly in developing regions. Future geospatial innovations should prioritize the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, inclusive capacity building, and environmental justice to foster equitable and efficient transportation systems. This review highlights GIS’s evolution from a supplementary tool to a cornerstone of data-driven, sustainable urban mobility planning, offering insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to advance transportation strategies that align with equity and sustainability goals. This study proposes a multi-objective optimization scheduling method for edible oil transportation in smart manufacturing, focusing on centralized control and addressing challenges such as complex pipelines and shared resource constraints. The method employs the A* and Dijkstra pathfinding algorithm to determine the shortest pipeline route for each task, and estimates pipeline resource usage to derive a node cost weight function. Additionally, the transport time is calculated using the Hagen–Poiseuille law by considering the viscosity coefficients of different oil types. To minimize both cost and time, task execution sequences are optimized based on a Pareto front approach. A 3D digital model of the pipeline system was developed using C#, SolidWorks Professional, and the Helix Toolkit V2.24.0 to simulate a realistic production environment. This model is integrated with a 3D visual human–machine interface(HMI) that displays the status of each task before execution and provides real-time scheduling adjustment and decision-making support. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves scheduling efficiency by over 43% across various scenarios, significantly enhancing overall pipeline transport performance. The proposed method is applicable to pipeline scheduling and transportation management in digital factories, contributing to improved operational efficiency and system integration. Full article

Integrated GBR–NSGA-II Optimization Framework for Sustainable Utilization of Steel Slag in Road Base Layers

This study proposes an integrated, machine learning-based multi-objective optimization framework to evaluate and optimize the utilization of steel slag in road base layers, simultaneously addressing economic costs and environmental impacts. A comprehensive dataset of 482 scenarios was engineered based on literature-informed parameters, encompassing transport distance, processing energy intensity, initial moisture content, gradation adjustments, and regional electricity emission factors. Four advanced tree-based ensemble regression algorithms—Random Forest Regressor (RFR), Extremely Randomized Trees (ERTs), Gradient Boosted Regressor (GBR), and Extreme Gradient Boosting Regressor (XGBR)—were rigorously evaluated. Among these, GBR demonstrated superior predictive performance (R2 > 0.95, RMSE < 7.5), effectively capturing complex nonlinear interactions inherent in slag processing and logistics operations. Feature importance analysis via SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) provided interpretative insights, highlighting transport distance and energy intensity as dominant factors affecting unit cost, while moisture content and grid emission factor predominantly influenced CO2 emissions. Subsequently, the Gradient Boosted Regressor model was integrated into a Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) framework to explore optimal trade-offs between cost and emissions. The resulting Pareto front revealed a diverse solution space, with significant nonlinear trade-offs between economic efficiency and environmental performance, clearly identifying strategic inflection points. To facilitate actionable decision-making, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was applied, identifying an optimal balanced solution characterized by a transport distance of 47 km, energy intensity of 1.21 kWh/ton, moisture content of 6.2%, moderate gradation adjustment, and a grid CO2 factor of 0.47 kg CO2/kWh. This scenario offered a substantial reduction (45%) in CO2 emissions relative to cost-minimized solutions, with a moderate increase (33%) in total cost, presenting a realistic and balanced pathway for sustainable infrastructure practices. Overall, this study introduces a robust, scalable, and interpretable optimization framework, providing valuable methodological advancements for sustainable decision making in infrastructure planning and circular economy initiatives. The multiscale interactive system composed of wind, leaves, and droplets serves as a critical dynamic unit in precision orchard spraying. Its coupling mechanisms fundamentally influence pesticide transport pathways, deposition patterns, and drift behavior within crop canopies, forming the foundational basis for achieving intelligent and site-specific spraying operations. This review systematically examines the synergistic dynamics across three hierarchical scales: Droplet–leaf surface wetting and adhesion at the microscale; leaf cluster motion responses at the mesoscale; and the modulation of airflow and spray plume diffusion by canopy architecture at the macroscale. Key variables affecting spray performance—such as wind speed and turbulence structure, leaf biomechanical properties, droplet size and electrostatic characteristics, and spatial canopy heterogeneity—are identified and analyzed. Furthermore, current advances in multiscale modeling approaches and their corresponding experimental validation techniques are critically evaluated, along with their practical boundaries of applicability. Results indicate that while substantial progress has been made at individual scales, significant bottlenecks remain in the integration of cross-scale models, real-time acquisition of critical parameters, and the establishment of high-fidelity experimental platforms. Future research should prioritize the development of unified coupling frameworks, the integration of physics-based and data-driven modeling strategies, and the deployment of multimodal sensing technologies for real-time intelligent spray decision-making. These efforts are expected to provide both theoretical foundations and technological support for advancing precision and intelligent orchard spraying systems. Full article
