In time series analysis, the ability to effectively handle data with varying sampling rates is crucial for accurate modeling and analysis. This paper presents the MR-BoF (Multi-Resolution Bag of Functions) framework, which leverages sampling-rate-independent techniques to decompose time series data while accommodating signals with differing resolutions. Unlike traditional methods that require uniform sampling frequencies, the BoF framework employs a flexible encoding approach, allowing for the integration of multi-resolution time series. Through a series of experiments, we demonstrate that the BoF framework ensures the precise reconstruction of the original data while enhancing resampling capabilities by utilizing decomposed components. The results show that this method offers significant advantages in scenarios involving irregular sampling rates and heterogeneous acquisition systems, making it a valuable tool for applications in fields such as finance, healthcare, industrial monitoring, IoT networks, and sensor networks. This paper addresses the trajectory tracking control problem of underactuated ships in ocean engineering, which faces the dual challenges of tracking error time–performance regulation and robustness design due to the system’s underactuated characteristics, model uncertainties, and external disturbances. Aiming to address the issues of traditional finite-time control (convergence time dependent on initial states) and fixed-time control (control chattering and parameter conservativeness), this paper proposes a predefined-time adaptive control framework that integrates an event-triggered mechanism and neural networks. By constructing a Lyapunov function with time-varying weights and designing non-periodic dynamically updated dual triggering conditions, the convergence process of tracking errors is strictly constrained within a user-prespecified time window without relying on initial states or introducing non-smooth terms. An adaptive approximator based on radial basis function neural networks (RBF-NNs) is employed to compensate for unknown nonlinear dynamics and external disturbances in real-time. Combined with the event-triggered mechanism, it dynamically adjusts the update instances of control inputs, ensuring prespecified tracking accuracy while significantly reducing computational resource consumption. Theoretical analysis shows that all signals in the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded, tracking errors converge to a neighborhood of the origin within the predefined-time, and the update frequency of control inputs exhibits a linear relationship with the predefined-time, avoiding Zeno behavior. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in complex marine environments. Compared with traditional control strategies, it achieves more accurate trajectory tracking, faster response, and a substantial reduction in control input update frequency, providing an efficient solution for the engineering implementation of embedded control systems in unmanned ships. With the accelerating globalization and rapid development of science and technology, scientific collaboration has become a key driver of knowledge production, yet its patterns vary significantly across disciplines. This study aims to explore the disciplinary differences in scholars’ scientific collaboration patterns and their underlying mechanisms. Data were collected from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, covering papers from four disciplines: mathematics, mechanical engineering, philosophy, and sociology. Using social network analysis, we examined core network metrics (degree centrality, neighbor connectivity, clustering coefficient) in collaboration networks, analyzed collaboration patterns across scholars of different academic ages, and compared the academic age distribution of collaborators and network characteristics across career stages. Key findings include the following. (1) Mechanical engineering exhibits the highest and most stable clustering coefficient (mean 0.62) across all academic ages, reflecting tight team collaboration, with degree centrality increasing fastest with academic age (3.2 times higher for senior vs. beginner scholars), driven by its reliance on experimental resources and skill division. (2) Philosophy shows high degree centrality in early career stages (mean 0.38 for beginners) but a sharp decline in clustering coefficient in senior stages (from 0.42 to 0.17), indicating broad early collaboration but loose later ties due to individualized knowledge production. (3) Mathematics scholars prefer collaborating with high-centrality peers (higher neighbor connectivity, mean 0.51), while sociology shows more inclusive collaboration with dispersed partner centrality. Porous materials are characterized by the pore surface area (S) and volume (V) accessible to a confined fluid. For mesoporous materials NMR measurements of diffusion are used to assess the S/V ratio, because at short times, only the diffusivity of molecules in the adsorbed layer is affected by confinement and the fractional population of these molecules is proportional to the S/V ratio. For materials with sub-nanometer pores, this might not be true, as the adsorbed layer can encompass the entire pore volume. Here, using molecular simulations, we explore the role played by S and S/V in determining the dynamical behavior of two carbon-bearing fluids—CO2 and ethane—confined in sub-nanometer pores of silica. S and V in a silicalite model representing a sub-nanometer porous material are varied by selectively blocking a part of the pore network by immobile methane molecules. Three classes of adsorbents were thus obtained with either all of the straight (labeled ‘S-major’) or zigzag channels (‘Z-major’) remaining open or a mix of a fraction of both types of channel blocked, resulting in half of the total pore volume being blocked (‘Half’). While the adsorption layers from opposite surfaces overlap, encompassing the entire pore volume for all pores except the intersections, the diffusion coefficient is still found to be reduced at high S/V, especially for CO2, albeit not so strongly as would be expected in the case of wider pores. This is because of the presence of channel intersections that provide a wider pore space with non-overlapping adsorption layers. Full article

Global supply chains often face uncertainties in production lead times, fluctuating exchange rates, and varying tariff regulations, all of which can significantly impact total profit. To address these challenges, this study formulates a multi-country supply chain problem as a Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP), integrating both currency variability and tariff levels. Using a Q-learning-based method (SMART), we explore three scenarios: (1) wide currency gaps under a uniform tariff, (2) narrowed currency gaps encouraging more local sourcing, and (3) distinct tariff structures that highlight how varying duties can reshape global fulfillment decisions. Beyond these baselines we analyze uncertainty-extended variants and targeted sensitivities (quantity discounts, tariff escalation, and the joint influence of inventory holding costs and tariff costs). Simulation results, accompanied by policy heatmaps and performance metrics, illustrate how small or large shifts in exchange rates and tariffs can alter sourcing strategies, transportation modes, and inventory management. A Deep Q-Network (DQN) is also applied to validate the Q-learning policy, demonstrating alignment with a more advanced neural model for moderate-scale problems. These findings underscore the adaptability of reinforcement learning in guiding practitioners and policymakers, especially under rapidly changing trade environments where exchange rate volatility and incremental tariff changes demand robust, data-driven decision-making. Monitoring pH and acidity during yoghurt fermentation is essential for product quality and process efficiency. Conventional measurement methods, however, are invasive and labour-intensive. This study developed artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict pH and titratable acidity during yoghurt fermentation using CIELAB colour parameters (L, a*, b*). Reconstituted milk powder with 12% total solids was prepared with varying protein levels (4.2–4.8%), inoculum concentrations (1–3%), and fermentation temperatures (36–44 °C). Data were collected every 10 min until pH 4.6 was reached. Forty models were trained for each output variable, using 90% of the data for training and 10% for validation. The first two phases of the fermentation process were clearly distinguishable, lasting between 4.5 and 7 h and exceeding 0.6% lactic acid in all treatments evaluated. The best pH model used two hidden layers with 28 neurons (R2 = 0.969; RMSE = 0.007), while the optimal acidity model had four hidden layers with 32 neurons (R2 = 0.868; RMSE = 0.002). The strong correlation between colour and physicochemical changes confirms the feasibility of this non-destructive approach. Integrating ANN models and colourimetry offers a practical solution for real-time monitoring, helping improve process control in industrial yoghurt production. Full article

In recent years, DC grids have gained traction, and several proposals regarding measuring strategies and several Power Quality (PQ) parameters have been defined to be used in such networks that differ from traditional AC power grids. As a complement to all this preliminary work, this study on the effect of modifying the sampling frequency on some of those parameters has been conducted. For time series evaluation of mean and RMS voltage values, the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm has been used. Additionally, the consequence of varying the sampling rate in voltage event detection has also been analysed. As a result, relevant advice regarding sampling frequency is presented in this paper for an effective and optimum evaluation of RMS or mean voltage values and its implementation in detecting voltage events (dips or swells). At least for the parameters in the monitored DC microgrid, a clue for the minimum sampling rate that guarantees accurate measurements is found. Full article

Northern Thailand frequently suffers from severe PM2.5 air pollution, especially during the dry season, due to agricultural burning, local emissions, and transboundary haze. Understanding how pollution moves across regions and identifying source–receptor relationships are critical for effective air quality management. This study investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of PM2.5 in northern Thailand. Specifically, it explored how pollution at one monitoring station influenced concentrations at others and revealed the seasonal structure of PM2.5 transmission using network-based analysis. We developed a Python-based framework to analyze daily PM2.5 data from 2022 to 2023, selecting nine representative stations across eight provinces based on spatial clustering and shape-based criteria. Delaunay triangulation was used to define spatial connections among stations, capturing the region’s irregular geography. Cross-correlation and Granger causality were applied to identify time-lagged relationships between stations for each season. Trophic coherence analysis was used to evaluate the hierarchical structure and seasonal stability of the resulting networks. The analysis revealed seasonal patterns of PM2.5 transmission, with certain stations, particularly in Chiang Mai and Lampang, consistently acting as source nodes. Provinces such as Phayao and Phrae were frequently identified as receptors, especially during the winter and rainy seasons. Trophic coherence varied by season, with the winter network showing the highest coherence, indicating a more hierarchical but less stable structure. The rainy season exhibited the lowest coherence, reflecting greater structural stability. PM2.5 spreads through structured, seasonal pathways in northern Thailand. Network patterns vary significantly across seasons, highlighting the need for adaptive air quality strategies. This framework can help identify influential monitoring stations for early warning and support more targeted, season-specific air quality management strategies in northern Thailand. Full article

Recently, deep learning algorithms have been increasingly applied in construction for activity recognition, particularly for excavators, to automate processes and enhance safety and productivity through continuous monitoring of earthmoving activities. These deep learning algorithms analyze construction videos to classify excavator activities for earthmoving purposes. However, previous studies have solely focused on single-source external videos, which limits the activity recognition capabilities of the deep learning algorithm. This paper introduces a novel multi-modal deep learning-based methodology for recognizing excavator activities, utilizing multi-stream input data. It processes point clouds and RGB images using the two-stream long short-term memory convolutional neural network (CNN-LSTM) method to extract spatiotemporal features, enabling the recognition of excavator activities. A comprehensive dataset comprising 495,000 video frames of synchronized RGB and point cloud data was collected across multiple construction sites under varying conditions. The dataset encompasses five key excavator activities: Approach, Digging, Dumping, Idle, and Leveling. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, the performance of the two-stream CNN-LSTM architecture is compared with that of single-stream CNN-LSTM models on the same RGB and point cloud datasets, separately. The results demonstrate that the proposed multi-stream approach achieved an accuracy of 94.67%, outperforming existing state-of-the-art single-stream models, which achieved 90.67% accuracy for the RGB-based model and 92.00% for the point cloud-based model. These findings underscore the potential of the proposed activity recognition method, making it highly effective for automatic real-time monitoring of excavator activities, thereby laying the groundwork for future integration into digital twin systems for proactive maintenance and intelligent equipment management. This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

Forecasting the energy consumption of different consumers became an important procedure with the creation of the European Electricity Market. This study presents a methodology for 24-hour ahead prediction of the energy consumption, which is suitable for application in animal husbandry facilities, such as pig farms. To achieve this, 24 individual models are trained using artificial neural networks that forecast the energy production 1 to 24 h ahead. The selected features include power consumption over the last 72 h, time-based data, average, minimum, and maximum daily temperatures, relative humidities, and wind speeds. The models’ Normalized mean absolute error (NMAE), Normalized root mean square error (NRMSE), and Mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) vary between 16.59% and 19.00%, 22.19% and 24.73%, and 9.49% and 11.49%, respectively. Furthermore, the case studies showed that in most situations, the forecasting error does not exceed 10% with several cases up to 25%. The proposed methodology can be useful for energy managers of animal farm facilities, and help them provide a better prognosis of their energy consumption for the Energy Market. The proposed methodology could be improved by selecting additional features, such as the variation of the controlled meteorological parameters over the last couple of days and the schedule of technological processes. The aperture of the towed horizontal line array is limited and the received signal is unstable in a complex ocean environment, making it difficult to distinguish the location of the sound source. To address this challenge, this paper presents a MoELocNet (Mixture of Experts Localization Network) for deep-sea sound source localization, leveraging interference structures in range-frequency domain signals from a towed horizontal line array. Unlike traditional correlation-based methods constrained by time-varying ocean environments and low signal-to-noise ratios, the model employs multi-expert and multi-task learning to extract interference periods from single-frame data, enabling robust estimation of source range and depth. Simulation results demonstrate its superior performance in the deep-sea shadow zone, achieving a range localization error of 0.029 km and a depth error of 0.072 m. The method exhibits strong noise robustness and delivers satisfactory results across diverse deep-sea zones, with optimal performance in shadow zones and secondary effectiveness in the direct arrival zone. Wind power output sequences exhibit strong randomness and intermittency characteristics; traditional single forecasting models struggle to capture the internal features of sequences and are highly susceptible to interference from high-frequency noise and predictive accuracy is still notably poor at the peaks where the power curve undergoes abrupt changes. To address the poor fitting at peaks, a short-term wind power forecasting method based on the improved Informer model is proposed. First, the temporal convolutional network (TCN) is introduced to enhance the model’s ability to capture regional segment features along the temporal dimension, enhancing the model’s receptive field to address wind power fluctuation under varying environmental conditions. Next, a discrete cosine transform (DCT) is employed for adaptive modeling of frequency dependencies between channels, converting the time series data into frequency domain representations to extract its frequency features. These frequency domain features are then weighted using a channel attention mechanism to improve the model’s ability to capture peak features and resist noise interference. Finally, the Informer generative decoder is used to output the power prediction results, this enables the model to simultaneously leverage neighboring temporal segment features and long-range inter-temporal dependencies for future wind-power prediction, thereby substantially improving the fitting accuracy at power-curve peaks. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed model; compared with other models, the proposed approach reduces MAE by 9.14–42.31% and RMSE by 12.57–47.59%. This study presents the development and validation of an AI-based system for detecting chainsaw sounds, integrated into a fixed-wing VTOL UAV. The system employs a convolutional neural network trained on log-mel spectrograms derived from four sound classes: chainsaw, music, electric drill, and human voices. Initial validation was performed through ground testing. Acoustic data acquisition is optimized during cruise flight, when wing-mounted motors are shut down and the rear motor operates at 40–60% capacity, significantly reducing noise interference. To address residual motor noise, a preprocessing module was developed using reference recordings obtained in an anechoic chamber. Two configurations were tested to capture the motor’s acoustic profile by changing the UAV’s orientation relative to the fixed microphone. The embedded system processes incoming audio in real time, enabling low-latency classification without data transmission. Field experiments confirmed the model’s high precision and robustness under varying flight and environmental conditions. Results validate the feasibility of real-time, onboard acoustic event detection using spectrogram-based deep learning on UAV platforms, and support its applicability for scalable aerial monitoring tasks. This article focuses on tackling the non-fragile H asynchronous estimation problem for delayed Markovian jumping neural networks (NNs) featuring stochastic disturbance. To more accurately reflect real-world scenarios, external random disturbances with known statistical characteristics are incorporated. Through the integration of stochastic analysis theory and Lyapunov stability techniques, as well as several matrix constraints formulas, some sufficient and effective results are addressed. These criteria ensure that the considered NNs achieve anticipant H stability in line with an external disturbance mitigation level. Meanwhile, the expected estimator gains will be explicitly constructed by dealing with corresponding matrix constraints. To conclude, a numerical simulation example is offered to showcase workability and validity of the formulated estimation method. Full article
