Varicocele is a common, potentially correctable condition associated with impaired male fertility. Despite being frequently encountered in clinical andrology, its pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic approaches remain areas of active investigation and debate. The authors conducted a comprehensive literature search, using the PubMed database, covering clinical studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and current international guidelines from the past ten years. Emphasis was placed on studies investigating novel diagnostic modalities, therapeutic innovations, and prognostic markers. Emerging evidence supports the multifactorial pathophysiology of varicocele, involving oxidative stress, hypoxia, inflammatory pathways, and potential genetic predisposition. Biomarkers, including microRNAs, antisperm antibodies, and sperm DNA fragmentation, offer diagnostic and prognostic utility, though their routine clinical implementation requires further validation. Advances in imaging, such as shear wave elastography, may improve diagnostic accuracy. While microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy remains the gold standard, technological refinements and non-surgical alternatives are being explored. Indications for treatment have expanded to include selected cases of non-obstructive azoospermia, hypogonadism, and optimization for assisted reproduction, though high-level evidence is limited. High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nuclear protein that can interact with a transmembrane cell surface receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGEs) and mediates the inflammatory pathways that lead to various pathological conditions like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. Blocking the HMGB1/RAGE axis using various small synthetic or natural molecules has been proven to be an effective therapeutic approach to treating these inflammatory conditions. However, the low water solubility of these pharmacoactive molecules limits their clinical use. Pharmaceutically active molecules with low solubility and bioavailability in vivo convey a higher risk of failure for drug development and drug innovation. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics parameters of these compounds are majorly affected by their solubility. Enhancement of the bioavailability and solubility of drugs is a significant challenge in the area of pharmaceutical formulations. This review mainly describes various technologies utilized to improve the bioavailability of synthetic or natural molecules which have been particularly used in various inflammatory conditions acting specifically through the HMGB1/RAGE pathway. This paper explores the intervening role in SEP performance of corporate environmental, cultural, and ethnic activities (ECEAs) and diversity, equity, inclusion, and social initiatives (DEISIs) on blockchain adoption (BCA) strategy, particularly useful in the Western Balkans (WB), which demands transparency due to extended fraud and ethnic complexities. In this domain, a question has been raised: In BCA strategies, is there any correlation between SEP performance and ECEAs and DEISIs in a mediating role? A serial mediation model was tested on a dataset of 630 WB and EU companies, and the research conceptual model was validated by CFA (Confirmation Factor Analysis), and the SEM (Structural Equation Model) fit was assessed. We found a statistically sound (significant, positive) correlation between BCA and ESG success performance, especially in the innovation and integrity ESG performance success indicators, when DEISIs mediate. The findings confirmed the influence of technology, and environmental, cultural, ethnic, and social factors on BCA strategy. The findings revealed some important issues of BCA that are of worth to WB companies’ managers to address BCA for better performance. This study adds to the literature on corporate blockchain transformation, especially for organizations seeking investment opportunities in new international markets to diversify their assets and skill pool. Furthermore, it contributes to a deeper understanding of how DEI initiatives impact the correlation between business transformation and socioeconomic performance, which is referred to as the “social impact”. Background and Objectives: Diabetes is a global public health challenge, with increasing prevalence worldwide. The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the management of this condition offers potential benefits in improving healthcare outcomes. This study primarily investigates the barriers and facilitators perceived by healthcare professionals in the adoption of AI. Secondarily, by analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data collected, it aims to support the potential development of AI-based programs for diabetes management, with particular focus on a possible bottom-up approach. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines for reporting and registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF) database. The study selection process was conducted in two phases—title/abstract screening and full-text review—independently by three researchers, with a fourth resolving conflicts. Data were extracted and assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tools. The included studies were synthesized narratively, combining both quantitative and qualitative analyses to ensure methodological rigor and contextual depth. Results: The adoption of AI tools in diabetes management is influenced by several barriers, including perceived unsatisfactory clinical performance, high costs, issues related to data security and decision-making transparency, as well as limited training among healthcare workers. Key facilitators include improved clinical efficiency, ease of use, time-saving, and organizational support, which contribute to broader acceptance of the technology. Conclusions: The active and continuous involvement of healthcare workers represents a valuable opportunity to develop more effective, reliable, and well-integrated AI solutions in clinical practice. Our findings emphasize the importance of a bottom-up approach and highlight how adequate training and organizational support can help overcome existing barriers, promoting sustainable and equitable innovation aligned with public health priorities. This study presents a novel method for controlling the position and orientation of the bioinspired I-SUPPORT soft robot, which represents a relevant advancement in the field of soft robotics. The approach is based on module actuation decoupling and fractional-order control, offering a more advanced and robust control solution. This innovation enhances the versatility of the robot and illustrates the efficacy of fractional-order controllers, which are comparable to current meta-learning-based controllers. The research involves experiments in both vertical and horizontal configurations, addressing tasks ranging from simple orientation to complex interactions, such as gentle rubbing during bathing activities with the robot. These experimental results exemplify the efficacy of the proposed control strategy and provide a foundation for future research in soft robotics control, underscoring its potential for broader applications and further technological advancement. The development of active food packaging has evolved rapidly in recent years, offering innovative solutions to enhance food preservation and safety while addressing sustainability challenges. This review compiles and analyzes recent advancements (2019–2024) in release-type active packaging, focusing on essential oils, natural extracts, and phenolic compounds as active agents. Primarily plant-derived, these compounds exhibit significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, extending shelf life and enhancing food quality. Technological strategies such as encapsulation and polymer blending have been increasingly adopted to overcome challenges related to volatility, solubility, and sensory impact. Integrating bio-based polymers, including chitosan, starch, and polylactic acid, further supports the development of environmentally friendly packaging systems. This review also highlights trends in compound-specific research, release mechanisms, and commercial applications, including a detailed analysis of patents and case studies across various food matrices. These developments have already been translated into practical applications, such as antimicrobial sachets for meat and essential oil-based pads for fresh produce. Moreover, by promoting the valorization of agro-industrial by-products and the use of biodegradable materials, emission-type active packaging contributes to the principles of the circular economy. This comprehensive overview underscores the potential of natural bioactive compounds in advancing sustainable and functional food packaging technologies. Full article

To evaluate the efficiency of innovation development in China’s high-tech manufacturing industry, this paper constructs a two-stage dynamic network cross-efficiency model. This model divides innovation activities into two stages: technology research and development and achievement transformation and introduces a 2-year lag period in the technology research and development stage and a 1-year lag period in the achievement transformation stage. It proposes the overall efficiency and efficiency models for each stage. The model was applied to 30 provinces in China, and the results showed that most provinces have achieved relatively ideal results in the overall efficiency and achievement transformation stage of high-tech manufacturing, while the efficiency in the technology research and development stage is generally lower than that in the achievement transformation stage. It is recommended that enterprises increase their R&D investments, break through technological barriers, and optimize the innovation chain. Full article

This paper presents a case study of the Local Care Ecosystems developed by the provincial government of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain) to strengthen coordination between social services, health services, and community-based initiatives at the municipal level. The initiative seeks to personalize care, enhance service integration, and support community-based care with the overarching goal of improving the quality of life for older adults living at home. These ecosystems incorporate social, institutional, and technological innovations aimed at supporting individuals who are frail or vulnerable throughout the care cycle. At present, 18 Local Care Ecosystems are active, providing services to 1202 people over the age of 65 and 167 families. The model addresses a growing global challenge linked to population aging, which has led to increasing demand for care and support services that are often fragmented, under-resourced, and constrained by outdated regulatory frameworks. These structural issues can compromise both the quality and efficiency of care for dependent individuals. Based on the findings, the paper offers policy recommendations to support the transfer and adaptation of this model, with the aim of improving the well-being of older adults who wish to remain in their own homes. The use of Internet of Things (IoT) for sports innovation has transformed the way athletes train, compete, and recover in any sports activity. This study performs a bibliometric analysis to examine research trends, collaborations, and publications in the realm of IoT and Sports. Our analysis included 780 Scopus articles and 150 WoS articles published during 2012–2025, and duplicates were removed. We analyzed and visualized the bibliometric data using R version 3.6.1, VOSviewer version 1.6.20, and the bibliometrix library. The study provides insights from a bibliometric analysis, showcasing the allocation of topics, scientific contributions, patterns of co-authorship, prominent authors and their productivity over time, notable terms, key sources, publications with citations, analysis of citations, source-specific citation analysis, yearly publication patterns, and the distribution of research papers. The results indicate that China and India have the leading scientific production in the development of IoT and Sports research, with prominent authors like Anton Umek, Anton Kos, and Emiliano Schena making significant contributions. Wearable technology and wearable sensors are the most trending topics in IoT and Sports, followed by medical sciences and artificial intelligence paradigms. The analysis also emphasizes the importance of open-access journals like ‘Journal of Physics: Conference Series’ and ‘IEEE Access’ for their contributions to IoT and Sports research. Future research directions focus on enhancing effective, lightweight, and efficient wearable devices while implementing technologies like edge computing and lightweight AI in wearable technologies. Through a systematic review of sustainable rural dwelling recovery, this study offers a broader reflection on retrofitting practices, viewing eco-efficiency as a means to enhance both cultural heritage and agricultural landscapes. The work is based on the assumption that vernacular architecture in rural contexts embodies historical, cultural, and typological values worthy of preservation, while remaining adaptable to reuse through eco-efficient solutions and technological innovation. Using the PRISMA protocol, 115 scientific contributions were selected from 1711 initial records and classified into four macro-groups: landscape relationships; seismic and energy retrofitting; construction techniques and innovative materials; and morphological–typological analysis. Results show a predominance (over 50%) of passive design strategies, compatible materials, and low-impact techniques, while active systems are applied more selectively to protect cultural integrity. The study identifies replicable methodological models combining sustainability, cultural continuity, and functional adaptation, offering recommendations for future operational guidelines. Conscious eco-efficient retrofitting thus emerges as a strategic tool for the integrated valorization of rural landscapes and heritage. Full article

This study investigated pre-service teachers’ (PTs) intentions to adopt generative AI (GenAI) tools in future classrooms by applying an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Participants were enrolled in multiple teacher-preparation programs within a single U.S. higher education institution. Through a structured GenAI-integrated activity using Khanmigo, a domain-specific AI platform for K-12 education, PTs explored AI-supported instructional tasks. Post-activity data were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The results showed that perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease-of-use (PEU), and self-efficacy (SE) significantly predicted behavioral intention (BI) to adopt GenAI, with SE also influencing both PU and PEU. Conversely, personal innovativeness in IT and perceived cyber risk showed insignificant effects on BI or PU. The findings underscored the evolving dynamics of TAM constructs in GenAI contexts and highlighted the need to reconceptualize ease-of-use and risk within AI-mediated environments. Practically, the study emphasized the importance of preparing PTs not only to operate AI tools but also to critically interpret and co-design them. These insights inform both theoretical models and teacher education strategies, supporting the ethical and pedagogically meaningful integration of GenAI in K-12 education. This research examines the shifting geography of small firm innovation in the U.S. by tracking the location of small business innovation research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer (STTR) awardees between 2010 and 2024. The SBIR and STTR are “seed fund” awards coordinated by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and funded through 11 U.S. federal agencies. Of particular interest is whether the number of individual SBA awards, awarded firms, and/or funding amounts are (1) becoming increasingly concentrated within regional innovation hubs and (2) exhibiting a shift toward or away from urban centers and other walkable, transit-accessible urban neighborhoods, particularly since 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. While the rise of remote work and pandemic-related fears may have reduced the desirability of urban spaces for both living and working, there remain significant benefits to spatial agglomeration that may be especially crucial for startups and other small firms in the knowledge- or information-intensive industries. The results suggest that innovative activity of smaller firms has indeed trended toward more centralized, denser, and walkable urban areas in recent years while also remaining fairly concentrated within major metropolitan innovation hubs. The pandemic appears to have resulted in a measurable, though potentially short-lived, cessation of these trends. Full article

The rapid increase in the global population of older adults presents a significant challenge, but also a unique opportunity to leverage technological advancements for promoting independent living and well-being. This study introduces the CIREI framework, which is a comprehensive model designed to enhance the integration of smart home and assistive technologies specifically for pre-frail older adults. Developed through a systematic literature review and innovative and comprehensive co-design activities, the CIREI framework captures the nuanced needs, preferences, and challenges faced by older adults, caregivers, and experts. Key findings from the co-design workshop highlight critical factors such as usability, privacy, and personalised learning preferences, which directly influence technology adoption. These insights informed the creation of an intelligent middleware prototype named WISE-WARE, which seamlessly integrates commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices to support health management and improve the quality of life for older adults. The CIREI framework’s adaptability ensures it can be extended and refined to meet the ever-changing needs of the ageing population, providing a robust foundation for future research and development in user-centred technology design. All workshop materials, including tools and methodologies, are made available to encourage the further exploration and adaptation of the CIREI framework, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness in the dynamic landscape of ageing and technology. This research contributes significantly to the discourse on ageing in place, digital inclusion, and the role of technology in empowering older adults to maintain independence. Full article

The lips, due to their unique anatomical characteristics of a thin stratum corneum, the absence of sebaceous glands, and limited melanin content are particularly vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, necessitating specialized photoprotective care. While facial sunscreens are widely available, the development of lip-specific sun protection products remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze technological trends and innovations in lip photoprotection by reviewing patents published between 2014 and 2024. A comprehensive patent search using the IPC code A61Q19 and the keywords “lip” and “sunscreen” identified 17 relevant patents across China, the United States, and Japan. The patents were examined for active ingredients, formulation strategies, and use of botanical or sustainable excipients. The findings revealed that patented formulations predominantly rely on well-established UV filters such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, octyl methoxycinnamate, and avobenzone, often combined with antioxidants like ferulic acid and rutin for enhanced efficacy. Lipid-based excipients were widely used to improve texture, hydration, and product stability. Although many formulations exhibit a conservative ingredient profile, the strategic combination of UV filters with natural antioxidants and moisturizing lipids demonstrates a multifunctional approach aimed at enhancing both protection and user experience. Chromosome-Level Genome Announcement of the Monokaryotic Pleurotus ostreatus Strain PC80

Pleurotus ostreatus is a widely cultivated edible fungus in China, renowned for its rich nutritional composition and diverse medicinal compounds. However, the quality of the currently published P. ostreatus genomes remained suboptimal, which limited in-depth research on its evolution, growth, and development. In this study, we conducted a chromosome-level genome assembly of the monokaryotic basidiospore strain PC80. The assembled genome spanned 40.6 Mb and consisted of 15 scaffolds. Ten of these scaffolds contained complete telomere-to-telomere structures. The scaffold N50 value was 3.6 Mb. Genome annotation revealed 634 carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) family genes. Through collinearity analysis, we further confirmed that the PC80 genome exhibited higher completeness and greater accuracy compared to the currently published genomes of P. ostreatus. At the matA locus of PC80, three hd1 genes and one hd2 gene were identified. At the matB locus, seven pheromone receptor genes and two pheromone precursor genes were detected. Further phylogenetic analysis indicated that three of these pheromone receptor genes are likely to have mating-specific functions. This complete genome assembly could provide a foundation for future genomic and genetic studies, facilitate the identification of key genes related to growth and developmental regulation, and promote technological innovations in P. ostreatus breeding and efficient utilization.
