In this study, an effective strengthening method was investigated to improve the seismic performance of masonry brick walls. The strengthening method comprised the use of shotcrete, which was applied in both glass fiber-reinforced and unreinforced forms for steel plates and tie rods. Thirteen wall specimens constructed with vertical perforated masonry block bricks were tested under diagonal compression in accordance with ASTM E519 (2010). Reinforcement plates with different thicknesses (1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm) were anchored using 6 mm diameter tie rods. A specially designed steel frame and an experimental loading program with controlled deformation increments were employed to simulate the effects of reinforced concrete beam frame system on walls under the effect of diagonal loads caused by seismic loads. In addition, numerical simulations were conducted using three-dimensional finite element models in Abaqus Explicit software to validate the experimental results. The findings demonstrated that increasing the number of tie rods enhanced the shear strength and overall behavior of the walls. Steel plates effectively absorbed tensile stresses and limited crack propagation, while the fiber reinforcement in the shotcrete further improved wall strength and ductility. Overall, the proposed strengthening techniques provided significant improvements in the seismic resistance and energy absorption capacity of masonry walls, offering practical and reliable solutions to enhance the safety and durability of existing masonry structures. In the casting and rolling production process, surface longitudinal cracks are a typical casting defect. Tracing the causes of longitudinal cracks online and controlling the key parameters leading to their formation in a timely manner can enhance the stability of casting and rolling production. To this end, the influencing factors of longitudinal cracks were analyzed, a data integration storage platform was constructed, and a tracing model was established using empirical rule analysis, statistical analysis, and intelligent analysis methods. During the initial production phase of a casting machine, longitudinal cracks occurred frequently. The tracing results using the LightGBM-SHAP method showed that the relative influence of the narrow left wide inner heat flow ratio of the mold was significant, followed by the heat flow difference on the wide symmetrical face of the mold and the superheat of the molten steel, with weights of 0.135, 0.066, and 0.048, respectively. Based on the tracing results, we implemented online emergency measures. By controlling the cooling intensity of the mold, we effectively reduced the recurrence rate of longitudinal cracks. Root cause analysis revealed that the total hardness of the mold-cooling water exceeded the standard, reaching 24 mg/L, which caused scaling on the mold copper plates and uneven cooling, leading to the frequent occurrence of longitudinal cracks. After strictly controlling the water quality, the issue of longitudinal cracks was brought under control. The online application of the tracing method for the causes of longitudinal cracks has effectively improved efficiency in resolving longitudinal crack problems. Full article

Widely employed in diverse engineering applications, stiffened steel plates are often subjected to biaxial compressive loads. Under these conditions, buckling may occur, initially within the elastic range but potentially progressing into the elasto-plastic domain, which can lead to permanent deformations or structural collapse. To increase the ultimate buckling stress of plates, the implementation of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners is effective; however, this complexity makes analytical stress calculations challenging. As a result, numerical methods like the Finite Element Method (FEM) are attractive alternatives. In this study, the Constructal Design method and the Exhaustive Search technique were employed and associated with the FEM to optimize the geometric configuration of stiffened plates. A steel plate without stiffeners was considered, and 30% of its volume was redistributed into stiffeners, creating multiple configuration scenarios. The objective was to investigate how different arrangements and geometries of stiffeners affect the ultimate buckling stress under biaxial compressive loading. Among the configurations evaluated, the optimal design featured four longitudinal and two transverse stiffeners, with a height-to-thickness ratio of 4.80. This configuration significantly improved the performance, achieving an ultimate buckling stress 472% higher than the unstiffened reference plate. In contrast, the worst stiffened configuration led to a 57% reduction in performance, showing that not all stiffening strategies are beneficial. These results demonstrate that geometric optimization of stiffeners can significantly enhance the structural performance of steel plates under biaxial compression, even without increasing material usage. The approach also revealed that intermediate slenderness values lead to better stress distribution and delayed local buckling. Therefore, the methodology adopted in this work provides a practical and effective tool for the design of more efficient stiffened plates. Full article

Nowadays, the circular economy is driving the construction industry towards greater sustainability for both environmental and financial purposes. One prominent area of research with significant contributions to circular economy is the reuse of steel from decommissioned structures in new construction projects. This approach is deemed far more efficient than ordinary steel recycling, due to the fact that it contributes towards reducing both the cost of the new project and the associated carbon emissions. Along these lines, the feasibility of utilizing steel wind turbine towers (WTTs) as part of a new structure is investigated herein, considering that wind turbines are decommissioned after a nominal life of approximately 25 years due to fatigue limitations. General principles of structural steel reuse are first presented in a systematic manner, followed by two case studies. Realistic data about the geometry and cross-sections of previous generation models of WTTs were obtained from the Greek Center for Renewable Energy Sources and Savings (CRES), including drawings and photographic material from their demonstrative wind farm in the area of Keratea. A specific wind turbine was selected that is about to exceed its life expectancy and will soon be decommissioned. Two alternative applications for the reuse of the tower were proposed and analyzed, with emphasis on the structural aspects. One deals with the use of parts of the tower as a small-span pedestrian bridge, while the second addresses the transformation of a tower section into a water storage tank. Several decision factors have contributed to the selection of these two reuse scenarios, including, amongst others, the geometric compatibility of the decommissioned wind turbine tower with the proposed applications, engineering intuition about the tower having adequate strength for its new role, the potential to minimize fatigue loads in the reused state, the minimization of cutting and joining processes as much as possible to restrain further CO2 emissions, reduction in waste material, the societal contribution of the potential reuse applications, etc. The two examples are briefly presented, aiming to demonstrate the concept and feasibility at the preliminary design level, highlighting the potential of decommissioned WTTs to find proper use for their future life. In many developing African countries, milk safety is often managed through traditional methods such as fermentation or boiling over firewood. While these approaches reduce some microbial risks, they present critical limitations. Firewood dependency contributes to deforestation, depletion of agricultural residues, and loss of soil fertility, which, in turn, compromise environmental health and food security. Solar pasteurization provides a reliable and sustainable method for thermally inactivating pathogenic microorganisms in milk and other perishable foods at sub-boiling temperatures, preserving its nutritional quality. This study aimed to evaluate the thermal and microbial performance of a low-cost solar milk pasteurization system, hypothesized to effectively reduce microbial contaminants and retain milk quality under natural sunlight. The system was constructed using locally available materials and tailored to the climatic conditions of the Savanna ecological zone in West Africa. A flat-plate glass solar collector was integrated with a 0.15 cm thick stainless steel cylindrical milk vat, featuring a 2.2 cm hot water jacket and 0.5 cm thick aluminum foil insulation. The system was tested in Navrongo, Ghana, under ambient temperatures ranging from 30 °C to 43 °C. The pasteurizer successfully processed up to 8 L of milk per batch, achieving a maximum milk temperature of 74 °C by 14:00 GMT. Microbial analysis revealed a significant reduction in bacterial load, from 6.6 × 106 CFU/mL to 1.0 × 102 CFU/mL, with complete elimination of coliforms. These results confirmed the device’s effectiveness in achieving safe pasteurization levels. The findings demonstrate that this locally built solar pasteurization system is a viable and cost-effective solution for improving milk safety in arid, electricity-limited regions. Its potential scalability also opens avenues for rural entrepreneurship in solar-powered food and water treatment technologies. Full article

This paper addresses the critical challenge of selecting suitable pile foundations in port engineering by systematically investigating the axial bearing behavior of large-diameter steel pipe piles and prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) piles. The study integrates both numerical simulations and field tests within the context of the Yancheng Dafeng Port Security Facilities Project. A self-balanced static load numerical model for PHC piles was developed using Plaxis 3D, enabling the simulation of load-displacement responses, axial force transfer, and side resistance distribution. The accuracy of the model was verified through a comparison with field static load test data. With the verified model parameters, the internal force distribution of steel pipe piles was analysed by modifying material properties and adjusting boundary conditions. A comparative analysis of the two pile types was conducted under identical working conditions. The results reveal that the ultimate bearing capacities of the 1# steel pipe pile and the 2# PHC pile are 6734 kN and 6788 kN, respectively. Despite the PHC pile having a 20% larger diameter, its ultimate bearing capacity is comparable to that of the steel pipe pile, suggesting a more efficient utilisation of material strength in the latter. Further numerical simulations indicate that, under the same working conditions, the ultimate bearing capacity of the steel pipe pile exceeds that of the PHC pile by 18.43%. Additionally, the axial force distribution along the steel pipe pile shaft is more uniform, and side resistance is mobilised more effectively. The reduction in side resistance caused by construction disturbances, combined with the slenderness ratio (L/D = 41.7) of the PHC pile, results in 33.87% of the pile’s total bearing capacity being attributed to tip resistance. The findings of this study provide crucial insights into the selection of optimal pile types for terminal foundations, considering factors such as bearing capacity, environmental conditions, and economic viability. This paper presents field investigations of a corrugated steel soil–steel arch structure with a span of 25.7 m and a rise of 9.0 m—currently the largest single-span structure of its kind in Europe. The structure, serving as a wildlife crossing along the DK16 expressway in northeastern Poland, was constructed using deep corrugated steel plates (500 mm× 237 mm) made from S315MC steel, without additional reinforcements such as stiffening ribs or geosynthetics. The study focused on monitoring the structural behavior during the critical backfilling phase. Displacements and strains were recorded using 34 electro-resistant strain gauges and a geodetic laser system at successive backfill levels, with particular attention to the loading stage at the crown. The measured results were compared with predictions based on the Swedish Design Method (SDM). The SDM equations did not accurately predict internal forces during backfilling. At the crown level, bending moments and axial forces were overestimated by approximately 69% and 152%, respectively. At the final backfill level, the SDM underestimated bending moments by 55% and overestimated axial forces by 90%. These findings highlight limitations of current design standards and emphasize the need for revised analytical models and long-term monitoring of large-span soil–steel structures. Full article

Taconis oscillations represent spontaneous excitation of acoustic modes in tubes with large temperature gradients in cryogenic systems. In this study, Taconis oscillations in hydrogen and helium systems are enhanced with a porous material resulting in a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine. A theoretical model is developed using the thermoacoustic software DeltaEC, version v6.4b2.7, to predict system performance, and an experimental apparatus is constructed for engine characterization. The low-amplitude thermoacoustic model predicts the pressure amplitude, frequency, and temperature gradient required for excitation of the standing-wave system. Experimental measurements, including the onset temperature ratio, acoustic pressure amplitudes, and frequencies, are recorded for different stack materials and geometries. The findings indicate that, independent of stack, hydrogen systems excite at smaller temperature differentials than helium (because of different properties such as lower viscosity for hydrogen), and the stack geometry and material affect the onset temperature ratio. However, pressure amplitude in the excited states varies minimally. Initial measurements are also conducted in a cooling setup with an added regenerator. The configuration with stainless-steel mesh screens produces a small cryogenic refrigeration effect with a decrease in temperature of about 1 K. The reported characterization of a Taconis-based thermoacoustic engine can be useful for the development of novel thermal management systems for cryogenic storage vessels, including refrigeration and pressurization. Lightweight steel-framing (LSF) systems have become increasingly prominent in modern construction due to their structural efficiency, design flexibility, and sustainability. However, traditional facade materials such as stone are often cost-prohibitive, and brick veneers—despite their popularity—pose seismic performance concerns. This study introduces an innovative porcelain sheathing system for cold-formed steel (CFS) shear walls. Porcelain has no veins thus it offers integrated and reliable strength unlike granite. Four full-scale CFS shear walls incorporating screwed porcelain sheathing (SPS) were tested under combined cyclic lateral and constant gravity loading. The experimental program investigated key seismic characteristics, including lateral stiffness and strength, deformation capacity, failure modes, and energy dissipation, to calculate the system response modification factor (R). The test results showed that configurations with horizontal sheathing, double mid-studs, and three blocking rows improved performance, achieving up to 21.1 kN lateral resistance and 2.5% drift capacity. The average R-factor was 4.2, which exceeds the current design code values (AISI S213: R = 3; AS/NZS 4600: R = 2), suggesting the enhanced seismic resilience of the SPS-CFS system. This study also proposes design improvements to reduce the risk of brittle failure and enhance inelastic behavior. In addition, the results inform discussions on permissible building heights and contribute to the advancement of CFS design codes for seismic regions. Full article

This study aims to enhance the performance of an innovative steel slag–ceramsite foam concrete (SSCFC) to advance sustainable green building materials. An eco-friendly composite construction material was developed by integrating industrial by-product steel slag (SS) with lightweight ceramsite. Employing a three-factor, three-level orthogonal experimental design at a fixed density of 800 kg/m3, 12 mix proportions (including a control group) were investigated with the variables of water-to-cement (W/C) ratio, steel slag replacement ratio, and ceramsite replacement ratio. The governing mechanisms of the W/C ratio, steel slag replacement level, and ceramsite replacement proportion on the SSCFC’s fluidity and compressive strength (CS) were elucidated. The synergistic application of range analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) quantified the significance of factors on target properties, and partial least squares regression (PLSR)-based prediction models were established. The test results indicated the following significance hierarchy: steel slag replacement > W/C ratio > ceramsite replacement for fluidity. In contrast, W/C ratio > ceramsite replacement > steel slag replacement governed the compressive strength. Verification showed R2 values exceeding 65% for both fluidity and CS predictions versus experimental data, confirming model reliability. Multi-criteria optimization yielded optimal compressive performance and suitable fluidity at a W/C ratio of 0.4, 10% steel slag replacement, and 25% ceramsite replacement. Full article

High-viscosity stratified strata, characterized by complex geotechnical properties such as strong cohesion, low permeability, and pronounced layered structures, exhibit significant lateral friction resistance and high-end resistance during steel sheet pile installation. These factors substantially increase construction difficulty and may even cause structural damage. This study addresses two critical mechanical challenges during vibratory pile driving in Fujian Province’s hydraulic engineering project: prolonged high-frequency driving durations, and severe U-shaped steel sheet pile head damage in high-viscosity stratified soils. Employing the Coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) numerical method, a systematic investigation was conducted into the penetration resistance, stress distribution, and damage patterns during vibratory pile driving under varying conditions of cohesive soil layer thickness, predrilled hole spacing, and aperture dimensions. The correlation between pile stress and penetration depth was established, with the influence mechanisms of key factors on driving-induced damage in high-viscosity stratified strata under multi-factor coupling effects elucidated. Finally, the feasibility of predrilling techniques for resistance reduction was explored. This study applies the damage prediction model based on the CEL method to U-shaped sheet piles in high-viscosity stratified formations, solving the problem of mesh distortion in traditional finite element methods. The findings provide scientific guidance for steel sheet pile construction in high-viscosity stratified formations, offering significant implications for enhancing construction efficiency, ensuring operational safety, and reducing costs in such challenging geological conditions. Variations in damper configuration strategies have a direct impact on the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges. Variations in damper configuration strategies have a direct impact on the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges. This study developed an analysis and evaluation framework to identify the damage category, state, and progression sequence of structural components. The framework aims to investigate the influence of viscous dampers on the seismic response and damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges under near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The effects of different viscous damper configuration strategies and design parameters on seismic responses of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges were systematically investigated, and the preferred configuration and parameter set were identified. The influence of preferred viscous damper configurations on seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges was systematically analyzed through the established analysis and evaluation frameworks. The results indicate that a relatively optimal reduction in bridge response can be achieved when viscous dampers are simultaneously installed at both the abutments and the approach piers. Minimum seismic responses were attained at a damping exponent α = 0.2 and damping coefficient C = 6000 kN/(m/s), demonstrating stability in mitigating vibration effects on arch rings and bearings. In the absence of damper implementation, the lower chord arch foot section is most likely to experience in-plane bending failure. The piers, influenced by the coupling effect between the spandrel construction and the main arch ring, are more susceptible to damage as their height decreases. Additionally, the end bearings are more prone to failure compared to the central-span bearings. Implementation of the preferred damper configuration strategy maintains essentially consistent sequences in seismic-induced damage patterns of the bridge, but the peak ground motion intensity causing damage to the main arch and spandrel structure is significantly increased. This strategy enhances the damage-initiation peak ground acceleration (PGA) for critical sections of the main arch, while concurrently reducing transverse and longitudinal bending moments in pier column sections. The proposed integrated analysis and evaluation framework has been validated for its applicability in capturing the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges. Full article

In this research project a large linear electromagnetic actuator (LLEA) was designed and manufactured. The electromagnetic performance was published in previous works, but in this paper we focus on the technological challenges related to the manufacturing in particular. This LLEA was based on the magnet-free switched-reluctance principle, having six effective energised stator “teeth” and four passive mover parts (4:6 ratio). Various aspects and challenges encountered during the manufacturing, transport, and assembly are discussed. Thermal expansion of steel contributed to the decision of the modular design, with each module having 1.3 m in length, with a 2 mm longitudinal dilatation gap. The initial prototype was tested with a 10.6 m length, with plans to extend the test track to 60 m, which was fully achievable due to the modular design and required 29 tons of electrical steel to be built. The stator laminations were cut by a bespoke progressive tool with stamping, and other parts by a CO2 laser. Mounting was based on welding (back of the stator) and clamping plates (through insulated bolts). The linear longitudinal force was on the order of 8 kN, with the main air gap of 7.5–10 mm on either side of the mover. The lateral forces could exceed 40 kN and were supported by appropriate construction steel members bolted to the concrete floor. The overall mechanical tolerances after installation remained below 0.5 mm. The technology used for constructing this prototype demonstrated the cost-effective way for a semi-industrial manufacturing scale. Full article

Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams constructed with low-strength concrete are susceptible to sudden splitting failures in the strut region due to shear–compression stresses. To mitigate this vulnerability, various strengthening techniques, including steel plates, fiber-reinforced polymer sheets, and cementitious composites, have been explored to confine the strut area. This study investigates the structural performance of RC deep beams with low-strength concrete, strengthened externally using an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer. To ensure effective confinement and uniform shear distribution, shear reinforcement was provided at equal intervals with configurations of zero, one, and two vertical shear reinforcements. Four-point bending tests revealed that the ECC layer significantly enhanced the shear capacity, increasing load-carrying capacity by 51.6%, 54.7%, and 46.7% for beams with zero, one, and two shear reinforcements, respectively. Failure analysis through non-linear finite element modeling corroborated experimental observations, confirming shear–compression failure characterized by damage in the concrete struts. The strut-and-tie method, modified to incorporate the tensile strength of ECC and shear reinforcement actual stress values taken from the FE analysis, was used to predict the shear capacity. The predicted values were within 10% of the experimental results, underscoring the reliability of the analytical approach. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of ECC in improving shear performance and mitigating strut failure in RC deep beams made with low-strength concrete. Full article

To reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry and promote a circular economy, this study explores the reuse of waste materials such as glass powder (GP) and nitrile rubber (NR) fibres in concrete. However, the inclusion of these waste materials results in lower compressive strength compared to conventional concrete, limiting their application to non-structural elements. To overcome this limitation, this study adopts the concept of confined concrete by developing concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) stub columns. In total, twelve concrete mix variations were developed, with and without steel tube confinement. GP was utilised at replacement levels of 10–30% by weight of cement, while NR fibres were introduced at 0.5% and 1% by volume of concrete. The findings demonstrate that the incorporation of GP and NR fibres leads to a reduction in compressive strength, with a compounded effect observed when both materials are combined. Steel confinement within CFST columns effectively mitigated the strength reductions, restoring up to 17% of the lost capacity and significantly improving ductility and energy absorption capacity. All CFST columns exhibited consistent local outward buckling failure mode, irrespective of the concrete mix variations. A comparison with predictions from existing design codes and empirical models revealed discrepancies, underscoring the need for refined design approaches for CFST columns incorporating sustainable concrete infill. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of eco-friendly, high-performance structural systems, highlighting the potential of CFST technology in facilitating the adoption of waste materials in the construction sector.
