Owing to the distinct advantages of stator–permanent magnet (PM) motors over other PM machines, their prominence in high-power-density applications is surging dramatically, capturing growing interest across diverse applications. This article proposes an innovative design procedure for two primary stator–PM motor types, flux switching and biased flux, yielding 30 novel motor designs. The procedure involves splitting teeth, incorporating a flux reversal effect, and embedding flux barriers into the conventional structure. The analytical reasons behind the novel motors’ architecture are mathematically expressed and verified using finite element analysis (FEA). Through an effective optimisation based on a multi-objective genetic algorithm, various feasible stator/rotor pole combinations are explored, with over 36,000 samples evaluated using FEA coupled with the algorithm. The electromagnetic characteristics of promising motors are analysed, revealing that adding the flux reversal effect and flux barriers, which reduce PM volume while decreasing leakage flux and enhancing air gap flux, improves torque production by up to 68%. Beyond torque enhancement, other electromagnetic parameters, including torque ripple, core loss, and the power factor, are also improved. The proposed motors enhance the PM torque density significantly by about 115% compared to conventional motors and reduce the motor costs. A generalised decision-making process and thermal analysis are applied to the top-performing motors. Additionally, the prototyping measures and considerations are thoroughly discussed. The dual-stator permanent magnet (DSPM) machine has proved to have high space utilization and a redundant structure, which can be beneficial to improving the fault tolerance and torque density performance. In this paper, three types of DSPM machines are proposed and compared, where two sets of armature windings are wound in both inner/outer stators, producing more than one torque component compared with single-stator PM machines. The machine topology and operating principle of three DSPM machines are analyzed first. Next, feasible stator/rotor-pole number combinations are compared and determined. Furthermore, based on the finite-element (FE) method, both the electromagnetic performances of three DSPM machines under open-circuit and rated-load conditions after optimization are compared, aimed at generating maximum torque at fixed copper loss. The FE analyses indicate that the dual-stator consequent-pole permanent magnet (DSCPPM) machine generates maximum torque per PM volume, together with relatively high efficiency, which makes it a potentially hopeful candidate for low-speed and high-torque applications. In addition, a thermal analysis is carried out to confirm the validity of the design scheme. Finally, in order to verify the FE predictions, a prototype DSCPPM machine is manufactured and experimentally tested. Full article

In this paper, a new fault-tolerant consequent-pole hybrid excited (FTCPHE) machine with toroidal winding (TW) is designed for electric vehicles (EVs). In this proposed machine, U-type permanent magnets (PMs) are adopted in the consequent-pole rotor with the sequence of PM–iron–PM–iron. The stator tooth placed in the stator is classified into two groups to achieve hybrid excitation. The TW is positioned on the stator yoke to achieve the simple structure and excellent fault-tolerant ability. First, the topology of this proposed FTCPHE machine with the TW is briefly introduced and compared to that with the traditional combined winding. Second, the operation principle, the magnetic circuit, and the design procedure of the FTCPHE machine are analyzed and illustrated. Third, several key structural parameters of the proposed FTCPHE machine are discussed and designed to improve electromagnetic performances. Next, some electromagnetic properties, including the flux distribution, the no-load back-EMF, the electromagnetic torque, the cogging torque, and the fault-tolerant ability, are discussed in detail. Finally, a prototype of this proposed FTCPHE machine is manufactured to validate the simulated results. Full article

To achieve the objective of high torque, a high utilization rate of PMs, and flexible flux regulation capability of the permanent magnet (PM) machine, an axial–radial flux type permanent magnet (ARFTPM) machine was studied in this paper. The working principle of the ARFTPM machine is analyzed by illustrating the flux paths. Then, the influence of stator slot number on the flux regulation capability and torque is studied. A full comparison of the main parameters and electromagnetic performances of the ARFTPM machine with different stator slot numbers is presented, including winding coefficient, back electromotive force (EMF), cogging torque, average torque, and torque-angle characteristics. The optimal stator slot number was obtained. Finally, the 12-slot/10-pole prototype machine is manufactured and tested to validate the simulation data and theoretical analysis. Full article

A dual-rotor yokeless and segmented armature (YASA)-type axial-flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor with a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) array type was developed for urban air mobility (UAM) aircraft in this work. The proposed AFPM motor had rated and peak output powers of 75.5 and 104 kW, respectively, with rated and peak rotational speeds of 1800 rpm. To achieve a high torque, a cobalt–iron alloy core material was used for the stator core. The prototype AFPM motor, developed by KSEP in the Republic of Korea, was successfully manufactured and verified through experimentation. Additionally, the thermal stability of the winding and permanent magnets (PMs) was confirmed with a water-cooling system. A structure analysis of the proposed AFPM motor was conducted due to the detachment of an uneven air-gap length in the prototype AFPM motor. An output performance comparison based on core materials for the stator and rotor was carried out to explore the material cost reduction. Subsequently, the design for performance improvement by applying a Halbach permanent magnet (HPM) array type was investigated for further research. Full article

Post-assembly magnetization can significantly simplify the manufacturing of the rotor of permanent magnet (PM) electrical machines. The optimization of the post-assembly magnetizing device using finite element analysis (FEA) is time-consuming; therefore, a globally optimal solution aiming at achieving an adequate magnetizing level and minimal energy consumption is difficult to achieve. In this paper, a field–circuit coupling analysis (FCCA) model is proposed to optimize the auxiliary stator-type magnetizing device for interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). A reasonable simplification of the highly saturated magnetic circuit is made based on FEA results so that the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model can be established. On the other hand, the eddy currents in the PMs are equivalent to an eddy current short-circuit; thus, by converting the field calculation into a circuit calculation, the time cost can be reduced significantly, which greatly improves the speed of multi-objective optimization of the magnetizing device with multiple degrees of freedom. A V-type IPMSM is taken as a study case, and its post-assembly magnetizing device is optimized with the proposed method. FEA and experimental results show that the PMs are fully magnetized, while the required energy consumption is greatly reduced when compared with an existing magnetizing device. Full article

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are highly affected by magnetization, which determines the magnetization level in the permanent magnet (PM). There are three main magnetization methods: single-unit, stator coil, and post-assembly magnetization. Post-assembly magnetization is widely used in PMSM mass production due to its ability to achieve high magnetization performance using a separate magnetizing yoke. However, spoke-type PMSMs with ferrite PMs face challenges when using the post-assembly method. The structural configuration of two magnets located radially hampers effective magnetized field transmission to the rotor’s interior due to the narrow space between the magnets. Maximizing the magnetization rate becomes crucial, but the limited space in the spoke-type structure complicates this. This paper addresses the issue and analyzes factors influencing post-assembly magnetization characteristics. A novel yoke structure is proposed, reducing the distance between the coil and magnet, leading to more efficient magnetization. The parametric and performance comparative analysis shows an impressive 17.1%p increase in magnetization rate with the proposed yoke structure compared to the existing yoke. This outcome contributed to a solution for enhancing the magnetization performance of spoke-type ferrite PMSMs. Full article

Based on the magnetic gear effect, the field-modulated permanent-magnet machine (FMPMM) can realize the unequal pole design of the rotor PM field and the stator armature magnetic field. With the advantages of high torque density and high efficiency, the FMPMM has been widely studied in low-speed direct-drive applications. As a kind of machine excited by PMs, the performance of the FMPMM was affected by the demagnetization state. However, the method for establishing the FMPMM demagnetization model based on a finite element analysis (FEA) presented some problems, including tedious repeated modeling work and long calculation time-consuming under fine subdivision. Therefore, in this paper, a six-phase surface-mounted FMPMM was taken as an example, and an equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model was proposed for evaluating the machine performance under demagnetization. In order to realize the rapid establishing EMN models under diverse demagnetization types, the variable coercivity of PM was introduced. Furthermore, for the purpose of improving the calculation accuracy and shortening the calculation time, the least square method was used in fitting and analyzing the discrete results. Then, in order to verify the validity of the proposed EMN model, a prototype was fabricated and a testing platform was built. The air-gap flux density and the no-load back EMF obtained by the FEA, the proposed EMN model, and the experimental testing were compared. The results showed that the proposed EMN model can realize the rapid modeling and accurate analysis of the six-phase surface-mounted FMPMM under diverse demagnetization types. Full article

Driven by an eccentric mass through a two-layered cantilevered plectrum, the electromagnetic energy harvester (EEH) can convert low-frequency mechanical vibrations into continuous uni-directional rotation. To optimize the performance of the EEH, electromagnetic analysis of the EEH was conducted. Three-phase winding permanent magnet (PM) topology was employed, and combinations of different coils and magnet pole numbers were designed. Then, the finite element method (FEM) was applied to analyze the influence of the combinations of the coils and pole numbers as well as the PM dimensions on the three-phase induced voltage. Prototypes with different configurations were fabricated and the analysis effectiveness was confirmed. Furthermore, different types of stator yokes were designed to enhance the magnetic field. Compared to the original prototype, the output voltage of the optimal prototype increased by 0.5 V with the same rotation speed, and the harmonic components were sufficiently low. Then, experiments with excitation by linear reciprocating motions and swing motions were conducted. Under different exciting conditions, the optimal prototype can also induce the highest voltage amplitude. With an increase in the weight of the eccentric mass, a long duration can be reached that lasts up to 12 s. In summary, the proposed optimization can achieve a high-efficiency and high-power density EEH. Full article

A three-phase interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine with 18-stator-slots/12-rotor-poles and concentrated armature winding is commercially employed as a 10 kW integrated-starter-generator in a commercial hybrid electric vehicle. For comprehensive and fair evaluation, a pair of flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) brushless machines, namely one stator permanent magnet flux-switching (SPM-FS) machine, and one rotor permanent magnet flux-switching (RPM-FS) machine, are designed and compared under the same DC-link voltage and armature current density. Firstly, a SPM-FS machine is designed and compared with an IPM machine under the same torque requirement, and the performance indicates that they exhibit similar torque density; however, the former suffers from magnetic saturation and low utilization of permanent magnets (PMs). Thus, to eliminate significant stator iron saturation and improve the ratio of torque per PM mass, an RPM-machine is designed with the same overall volume of the IPM machine, where the PMs are moved from stator to rotor and a multi-objective optimization algorithm is applied in the machine optimization. Then, the electromagnetic performance of the three machines, considering end-effect, is compared, including air-gap flux density, torque ripple, overload capacity and flux-weakening ability. The predicted results indicate that the RPM-FS machine exhibits the best performance as a promising candidate for hybrid electric vehicles. Experimental results of both the IPM and SPM-FS machines are provided for validation. Full article

In this paper, a novel mechanical flux-weakening design of a spoke-type permanent magnet generator for a stand-alone power supply is proposed. By controlling the position of the adjustable modulator ring mechanically, the total induced voltage, i.e., the amplitude of the back EMF vector sum can be effectively adjusted accordingly by the modulation effect. Consequently, the variable-speed constant-amplitude voltage control (VSCAVC) with a large speed range can be achieved. Compared to the electrical flux-weakening method, the mechanical flux-weakening method is easier to operate without the risk of PM demagnetization. The analytical model is presented, and the operation principles are illustrated. To analyze the performance of different combinations of stator/rotor pole pairs, four cases are optimized and analyzed using the finite element method for comparison. The characteristics of VSCAVC are analyzed. Full article

Reliable fault diagnosis and condition monitoring are essential for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive systems with high-reliability requirements. PMSMs can be subject to various types of damage during operation. Magnetic damage is a unique fault of PMSM and concerns the permanent magnet (PM) of the rotor. PM damage may be mechanical in nature or be related to the phenomenon of demagnetization. This article presents a machine learning (ML) based demagnetization fault diagnosis method for PMSM drives. The time-frequency domain analysis based on short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is applied in the process of PM fault feature extraction from the stator phase current signal. Moreover, two ML-based models are verified and compared in the process of the automatic fault detection of demagnetization fault. These models are k-nearest neighbors (KNN) and multiLayer perceptron (MLP). The influence of the input vector elements, key parameters and structures of the models used on their effectiveness is extensively analyzed. The results of the experimental verification confirm the very high effectiveness of the proposed method. Full article

A hybrid-excited doubly salient dual-PM machine (HE-DSDPM) was presented by using the structural multi-tooth modification for an improvement of torque production. The multi-tooth structure modification of HE-DSDPM was clearly described. The PM and stator arcs were further examined for structural optimization. The electromagnetic performance including magnetic flux distribution, flux linkage, back-electromotive force (back-EMF), total harmonic distortion (THD), cogging torque and electromagnetic torque, was investigated with various field current under the same structural constraint. The simulation based on 2-D finite element analysis was used to validate all electromagnetic performance. The results showed that the proposed multi-tooth HE-DSDPM provides the best stator/rotor combination, the appropriate PM characteristics and the enlarged winding slot area. This proposed structure produces better overall electromagnetic performance because of its improved symmetrical magnetic flux path and greater flux regulation quality. In particular, it can generate a larger average torque of 26.18% with the lower ripple torque of about 4% compared to the conventional structure at no field current since the good back-EMF profile and low cogging torque. The largest variance of the torque percentage is occurred when excited by different field currents for the proposed multi-tooth HE-DSDPM. Hence, modification of multi-tooth structure could be beneficial in the electrical machine design of other types of doubly salient structures. Full article

The paper proposes a new dual stator PM machine based on field modulation theory (DSPMM), which employs the intermediate rotor participating in the electromechanical energy conversion of the internal and external machine. The proposed machine has the advantages of high torque density and high efficiency and solves the problem of insufficient space utilization of a single stator machine. The evolution process and working principle of the proposed DSPMM are studied. The flux-switching-type PM (FSPM) and the flux-reversal-type PM (FRPM) are employed in the proposed DSPMM, which forms four representative machines. For a fair comparison, the proposed machines employ identical key parameters, i.e., PM volume, the outer radius of the outer stator, and active airgap length. Based on finite element analysis (FEA), the electromagnetic performances of the four representative DSPMM under no-load and rated load, and different copper consumption conditions are analyzed and compared. The calculated results show that the proposed DSPMM with inner FSPM stator and outer FRPM stator can provide high output torque, low torque ripple, high power factor, and high efficiency. With the rapid development of power electronic techniques and the increasing cost of permanent magnets (PMs) materials, switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have recently gained more attention. However, traditional SRMs have a relatively low torque density. For the sake of increasing the motor torque density, this paper proposes a novel segmental rotor type SRM. The proposed motor adopts hybrid stator poles and concentrated windings in the stator side and a segmental rotor structure in the rotor side, which is completely different from the structures of the traditional SRM. The special structure of the motor shortens the magnetic flux paths of the motor, separates the parts of the magnetic flux paths from one another, and eradicates the magnetic flux reversal in the motor stator in order to improve the electric utilization and output torque density of the motor. Meanwhile, the requirement of the magneto-motive force and the core loss of the motor is also decreased, thereby improving the efficiency of the motor. For the purpose of proving the proposed structure, the characteristics of the motor are analyzed using the finite element method and are compared to those of the traditional 12/8 SRM, which is designed for the same application. Moreover, the prototypes of the traditional 12/8 and proposed SRMs are manufactured, and experiments based on the prototypes are performed. Finally, the effectiveness of the structure of the proposed motor is further proven by the experimental results. Full article
