Background: Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) has seen increased adoption since the COVID-19 pandemic, offering a non-invasive alternative for lower gastrointestinal investigations. However, inadequate bowel preparation remains a key limitation, often leading to higher conversion rates to colonoscopy. Manual assessment of bowel cleanliness is inherently subjective and marked by high interobserver variability. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled automated cleansing scores that not only standardise assessment and reduce variability but also align with the emerging semi-automated AI reading workflow, which highlights only clinically significant frames. As full video review becomes less routine, reliable, and consistent, cleansing evaluation is essential, positioning bowel preparation AI as a critical enabler of diagnostic accuracy and scalable CCE deployment. Objective: This CESCAIL sub-study aimed to (1) evaluate interobserver agreement in CCE bowel cleansing assessment using two established scoring systems, and (2) determine the impact of AI-assisted scoring, specifically a TransUNet-based segmentation model with a custom Patch Loss function, on both interobserver and intraobserver agreement compared to manual assessment. Methods: As part of the CESCAIL study, twenty-five CCE videos were randomly selected from 673 participants. Nine readers with varying CCE experience scored bowel cleanliness using the Leighton–Rex and CC-CLEAR scales. After a minimum 8-week washout, the same readers reassessed the videos using AI-assisted CC-CLEAR scores. Interobserver variability was evaluated using bootstrapped intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and Fleiss’ Kappa; intraobserver variability was assessed with weighted Cohen’s Kappa, paired t-tests, and Two One-Sided Tests (TOSTs). Results: Leighton–Rex showed poor to fair agreement (Fleiss = 0.14; ICC = 0.55), while CC-CLEAR demonstrated fair to excellent agreement (Fleiss = 0.27; ICC = 0.90). AI-assisted CC-CLEAR achieved only moderate agreement overall (Fleiss = 0.27; ICC = 0.69), with weaker performance among less experienced readers (Fleiss = 0.15; ICC = 0.56). Intraobserver agreement was excellent (ICC > 0.75) for experienced readers but variable in others (ICC 0.03–0.80). AI-assisted scores were significantly lower than manual reads by 1.46 points (p < 0.001), potentially increasing conversion to colonoscopy. Conclusions: AI-assisted scoring did not improve interobserver agreement and may even reduce consistency amongst less experienced readers. The maintained agreement observed in experienced readers highlights its current value in experienced hands only. Further refinement, including spatial analysis integration, is needed for robust overall AI implementation in CCE. Full article

Land use efficiency (LUE) serves as a crucial nexus between economic development and sustainable resource management, directly influencing urban production–consumption systems. While economic development stages (EDSs) reflect a region’s environmental carrying capacity and profoundly affect LUE, the specific mechanisms governing this relationship remain unclear. In this study, we combined multi-source data to portray the spatiotemporal patterns of EDSs and LUE in 276 Chinese cities from 1995 to 2020, and we identified the nonlinear effects of EDSs on LUE. Based on the fine-scale LUE, it is confirmed that the older the age of urban land generation, the higher the LUE, laying a theoretical foundation for subsequent research. Simultaneously, the EDS continues to be upgraded, with approximately 70% of cities reaching the post-industrialization stage or higher by 2020. The results of partial dependency plots (PDPs) revealed that the EDS has a positive impact on LUE. From the perspective of different urban scales, the higher the EDSs of supercities, type I large cities, type II large cities, and type II small cities, the greater the positive impact on LUE, whereas the impact patterns at other urban scales follow an inverted U-shape. These findings carry important implications for sustainable spatial development, particularly in optimizing land resource allocation to assist the shift to more efficient production systems and responsible consumption patterns. This paper presents a fully electronic, CMOS-compatible ultrasonic sensing system integrated into a 3D beamforming architecture for advanced automotive applications. The proposed system eliminates mechanical scanning by implementing a dual-path beamforming structure comprising programmable transmit (TX) and receive (RX) paths. The TX beamformer introduces per-element time delays derived from steering angles to control the direction of ultrasonic wave propagation, while the RX beamformer aligns echo signals for spatial focusing. Electrostatic actuation governs the CMOS-compatible ultrasonic transmission mechanism, whereas dynamic modulation under acoustic pressure forms the reception mechanism. The system architecture supports full horizontal and vertical angular coverage, leveraging delay-and-sum processing to achieve electronically steerable beams. The system enables low-power, compact, and high-resolution sensing modules by integrating signal generation, beam control, and delay logic within a CMOS framework. Theoretical modeling demonstrates its capability to support fine spatial resolution and fast response, making it suitable for integration into autonomous vehicle platforms and driver-assistance systems. In wheat pest and disease control methods, pesticide application occupies a dominant position, and the use of UAVs for precise pesticide application is a key technology in precision agriculture. However, it is difficult for existing UAV spraying systems to accurately achieve variable spraying according to crop growth conditions, resulting in pesticide waste and environmental pollution. To address this issue, this paper proposes a LiDAR-assisted UAV variable-speed spraying system. Firstly, a biomass estimation model based on LiDAR data and RGB data is constructed, LiDAR point cloud data and RGB data are extracted from the target farmland, and, after preprocessing, key parameters including LiDAR feature variables, canopy cover, and visible-light vegetation indices are extracted from the two types of data. Using these key parameters as model inputs, multiple machine learning methods are employed to build a wheat biomass estimation model, and a variable spraying prescription map is generated based on the spatial distribution of biomass. Secondly, the variable-speed spraying system is constructed, which integrates a prescription map interpretation module and a PWM control module. Under the guidance of the variable spraying prescription map, the spraying rate is adjusted to achieve real-time variable spraying. Finally, a comparative experiment is designed, and the results show that the LiDAR-assisted UAV variable spraying system designed in this study performs better than the traditional constant-rate spraying system; while maintaining equivalent spraying effects, the usage of chemical agents is significantly reduced by 30.1%, providing a new technical path for reducing pesticide pollution and lowering grain production costs. Magnetic induction imaging technology, as a non-invasive detection method based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, has a wide range of applications in the field of materials science and engineering with the advantages of no radiation and fast imaging. However, it has not been improved to address the problems of high contact measurement interference and low spatial resolution of traditional strain detection methods in bulk materials engineering. For this reason, this study proposes a magnetic induction detection technique incorporating metal particle assistance and designs a hardware detection system based on an eight-coil sensor to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of strain detection. Through finite element simulation and an image reconstruction algorithm, the conductivity distribution reconstruction was realized. Taking asphalt concrete as the research object, particle-reinforced composite specimens with added metal particles were prepared. On this basis, a hardware detection system with eight-coil sensors was designed and constructed, and the functionality and stability of the system were verified. Using finite element analysis technology, two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulation models were established to focus on analyzing the effects of different coil turns and excitation parameters on the induced voltage signal. The method proposed in this study provides a new technical approach for non-contact strain detection in road engineering and can also be applied to other composite materials. Full article

Ultrawideband (UWB) radar has emerged as a compelling solution for noncontact human activity recognition. This study proposes a novel framework that leverages adaptive signal decomposition and video-based deep learning to classify human motions with high accuracy using a single UWB radar. The raw radar signals were processed by empirical wavelet transform (EWT) to isolate the dominant frequency components in a data-driven manner. These components were further analyzed using the Hilbert transform to produce time–frequency spectra that capture motion-specific signatures through subtle phase variations. Instead of treating each spectrum as an isolated image, the resulting sequence was organized into a temporally coherent video, capturing spatial and temporal motion dynamics. The video data were used to train the SlowFast network—a dual-path deep learning model optimized for video-based action recognition. The proposed system achieved an average classification accuracy exceeding 99% across five representative human actions. The experimental results confirmed that the EWT–Hilbert-based preprocessing enhanced feature distinctiveness, while the SlowFast architecture enabled efficient and accurate learning of motion patterns. The proposed framework is intuitive, computationally efficient, and scalable, demonstrating strong potential for deployment in real-world scenarios such as smart healthcare, ambient-assisted living, and privacy-sensitive surveillance environments. Measurement of grasp configurations (position, orientation, and width) in unstructured environments is critical for robotic systems. Accurate and robust prediction relies on rich multi-scale object representations; however, detail loss and fusion conflicts in multi-scale processing often cause measurement errors, particularly for complex objects. This study proposes a multi-scale and cross-layer fusion grasp detection network (MCFG-Net) based on a skip-connected encoder–decoder architecture. The sampling module in the encoder–decoder is optimized, and the multi-scale fusion strategy is improved, enabling pixel-level grasp rectangles to be generated in real time. A multi-scale spatial feature enhancement module (MSFEM) addresses spatial detail loss in traditional feature pyramids and preserves spatial consistency by capturing contextual information within the same scale. In addition, a cascaded fusion attention module (CFAM) is designed to assist skip connections and mitigate redundant information and semantic mismatch during feature fusion. Experimental results show that MCFG-Net achieves grasp detection accuracies of 99.62% ± 0.11% on the Cornell dataset and 94.46% ± 0.22% on the Jacquard dataset. Real-world tests on an AUBO i5 robot yield success rates of 98.5% for single-target and 95% for multi-target grasping tasks, demonstrating practical applicability in unstructured environments. As the texture skeleton of the traditional village, the street space is the main area for tourists to visit in traditional villages; it is regarded as the spatial conversion place of human flow and the space frequently visited by tourists. Accumulating evidence shows that the visual quality of street spaces has an effect on pedestrians’ walking behaviors in urban areas, but this effect in traditional villages needs to be further explored. This paper takes Huangcun Village, Yixian County, Huangshan City, as the research area to explore the influence of the objective visual factors of street spaces on tourists’ subjective stay willingness. First, an evaluation system of the visual quality of street spaces was developed. With the assistance of computer vision and deep learning technologies, semantic segmentation of Huangcun Village street view images was performed to obtain a visual quality index and then calculate the descriptive index of Huangcun Village’s street space. Then, combining the data of tourists’ stay willingness with the visual quality of the street space, the overall evaluation results and space distribution of tourists’ stay willingness in Huangcun Village were predicted using the Trueskill algorithm and machine learning prediction model. Finally, the influence of the objective visual quality of the street space on tourist subjective stay willingness was analyzed by correlation analysis. This research could provide some useful information for street space design and tourism planning in traditional villages. Full article

As cities densify, deep underground infrastructure construction such as mass rapid transit (MRT) systems increasingly demand smarter, digitalized, and more sustainable approaches. RC diaphragm walls, essential to these systems, present challenges due to complex rebar configurations, spatial constraints, and high material usage and waste, factors that contribute significantly to carbon emissions. This study presents an AI-assisted rebar optimization framework to improve constructability and reduce waste in MRT-related diaphragm wall construction. The framework integrates the BIM concept with a custom greedy hybrid Python-based metaheuristic algorithm based on the WOA, enabling optimization through special-length rebar allocation and strategic coupler placement. Unlike conventional approaches reliant on stock-length rebars and lap splicing, this approach incorporates constructability constraints and reinforcement continuity into the optimization process. Applied to a high-density MRT project in Singapore, it demonstrated reductions of 19.76% in rebar usage, 84.57% in cutting waste, 17.4% in carbon emissions, and 14.57% in construction cost. By aligning digital intelligence with practical construction requirements, the proposed framework supports smart city goals through resource-efficient practices, construction innovation, and urban infrastructure decarbonization. Accurate State of Charge (SOC) estimation for retired power batteries remains a critical challenge due to their degraded electrochemical properties and heterogeneous aging mechanisms. Traditional methods relying solely on electrical parameters (e.g., voltage and current) exhibit significant errors, as aged batteries experience altered internal resistance, capacity fade, and uneven heat generation, which distort the relationship between electrical signals and actual SOC. To address these limitations, this study proposes a surface temperature-assisted SOC estimation method, leveraging the distinct thermal characteristics of retired batteries. By employing infrared thermal imaging, key temperature feature regions—the positive/negative tabs and central area—are identified, which exhibit strong correlations with SOC dynamics under varying operational conditions. A Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network is developed to integrate multi-region temperature data with electrical parameters, capturing spatial–temporal thermal–electrical interactions unique to retired batteries. The model is trained and validated using experimental data collected under constant current discharge conditions, demonstrating superior accuracy compared to conventional methods. Specifically, our method achieves 64.3–68.1% lower RMSE than traditional electrical-parameter-only approaches (V-I inputs) across 0.5 C–2 C discharge rates. Results show that the proposed method reduces SOC estimation errors compared to traditional voltage-based models, achieving RMSE values below 1.04 across all tested rates. This improvement stems from the model’s ability to decode localized heating patterns and their hysteresis effects, which are particularly pronounced in aged batteries. The method’s robustness under high-rate operations highlights its potential for enhancing the reliability of retired battery management systems in secondary applications such as energy storage. A monocular deflectometric system comprises a camera and a screen that collaboratively facilitate the reconstruction of a specular surface under test (SUT). This paper presents a methodology for solving the slope distribution of the SUT utilizing pose estimation derived from reflections, based on vision ray calibration (VRC). Initially recorded by the camera, an assisted flat mirror in different postures reflects the patterns displayed by a screen maintained in a constant posture. The system undergoes a calibration based on the VRC to ascertain the vision ray distribution of the camera and the spatial relationship between the camera and the screen. Subsequently, the camera records the reflected patterns by the SUT, which remains in a constant posture while the screen is adjusted to multiple postures. Utilizing the VRC, the vision ray distribution among several postures of the screen and the SUT is calibrated. Following this, an iterative integrated calibration is performed, employing the calibration results from the preceding separate calibrations as initial parameters. The integrated calibration amalgamates the cost functions from the separate calibrations with the intersection of lines in Plücker space. Ultimately, the results from the integrated calibration yield the slope distribution of the SUT, enabling an integral reconstruction. In both the numeric simulations and actual measurements, the integrated calibration significantly enhances the accuracy of the reconstructions when compared to the reconstructions with the separate calibrations. Manual assembly remains essential in modern manufacturing, yet the increasing complexity of customised production imposes significant cognitive burdens and error rates on workers. Existing Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) systems often operate passively, lacking adaptive interaction, real-time feedback and a control system with gesture. In response, we present Gest-SAR, a SAR framework that integrates a custom MediaPipe-based gesture classification model to deliver adaptive light-guided pick-to-place assembly instructions and real-time error feedback within a closed-loop interaction instance. In a within-subject study, ten participants completed standardised Duplo-based assembly tasks using Gest-SAR, paper-based manuals, and tablet-based instructions; performance was evaluated via assembly cycle time, selection and placement error rates, cognitive workload assessed by NASA-TLX, and usability test by post-experimental questionnaires. Quantitative results demonstrate that Gest-SAR significantly reduces cycle times with an average of 3.95 min compared to Paper (Mean = 7.89 min, p < 0.01) and Tablet (Mean = 6.99 min, p < 0.01). It also achieved 7 times less average error rates while lowering perceived cognitive workload (p < 0.05 for mental demand) compared to conventional modalities. In total, 90% of the users agreed to prefer SAR over paper and tablet modalities. These outcomes indicate that natural hand-gesture interaction coupled with real-time visual feedback enhances both the efficiency and accuracy of manual assembly. The current opinion paper puts into perspective how altered microbiota transplanted from Alzheimer’s patients initiates the impairment of the microbiota–gut–brain axis of a healthy recipient, leading to impaired cognition primarily arising from the hippocampus, dysfunctional adult hippocampal neurogenesis, dysregulated systemic inflammation, long-term spatial memory impairment, or chronic pain with hippocampal involvement. This altered microbiota may induce acquired Piezo2 channelopathy on enterochromaffin cells, which, in turn, impairs the ultrafast long-range proton-based oscillatory synchronization to the hippocampus. Therefore, an intact microbiota–gut–brain axis could be responsible for the synchronization of ultradian and circadian rhythms, with the assistance of rhythmic bacteria within microbiota, to circadian regulation, and hippocampal learning and memory formation. Hippocampal ultradian clock encoding is proposed to be through a Piezo2-initiated proton-signaled manner via VGLUT3 allosteric transmission at a distance. Furthermore, this paper posits that these unaccounted-for ultrafast proton-based long-range oscillatory synchronizing ultradian axes may exist not only within the brain but also between the periphery and the brain in an analogous way, like in the case of this depicted microbiota–gut–brain axis. Accordingly, the irreversible Piezo2 channelopathy-induced loss of the Piezo2-initiated ultradian prefrontal–hippocampal axis leads to Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology onset. Moreover, the same irreversible microdamage-induced loss of the Piezo2-initiated ultradian muscle spindle–hippocampal and cerebellum–hippocampal axes may lead to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease initiation, respectively. In wind-assisted orchard spraying operations, the dynamic response of leaves—manifested through changes in their posture—critically influences droplet deposition on both sides of the leaf surface and the penetration depth into the canopy. These factors are pivotal in determining spray coverage and the spatial distribution of pesticide efficacy. However, current research lacks comprehensive quantification and correlation analysis of the temporal response characteristics of leaves under wind disturbances. To address this gap, a systematic analytical framework was proposed, integrating real-time leaf segmentation and tracking, geometric feature quantification, and statistical correlation modeling. High-frame-rate videos of fluttering leaves were acquired under controlled wind conditions, and background segmentation was performed using principal component analysis (PCA) followed by clustering in the reduced feature space. A fine-tuned Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM2-FT) was employed to extract dynamic leaf masks and enable frame-by-frame tracking. Based on the extracted masks, time series of leaf area and inclination angle were constructed. Subsequently, regression analysis, cross-correlation functions, and Granger causality tests were applied to investigate cooperative responses and potential driving relationships among leaves. Results showed that the SAM2-FT model significantly outperformed the YOLO series in segmentation accuracy, achieving a precision of 98.7% and recall of 97.48%. Leaf area exhibited strong linear coupling and directional causality, while angular responses showed weaker correlations but demonstrated localized synchronization. This study offers a methodological foundation for quantifying temporal dynamics in wind–leaf systems and provides theoretical insights for the adaptive control and optimization of intelligent spraying strategies. Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Ecosystem Services and Human Well-Being in China’s Karst Regions: An Integrated Carbon Flow-Based Assessment

The relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) and human well-being (HWB) is a central issue of sustainable development. However, current research often relies on qualitative frameworks or indicator-based assessments, limiting a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between natural environment and human acquisition, which still needs to be strengthened. As an element transferred in the natural–society coupling system, carbon can assist in characterizing the dynamic interactions within coupled human–natural systems. Carbon, as a fundamental element transferred across ecological and social spheres, offers a powerful lens to characterize these linkages. This study develops and applies a novel analytical framework that integrates carbon flow as a unifying metric to quantitatively assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of the land use and land cover change (LUCC)–ESs–HWB nexus in Guizhou Province, China, from 2000 to 2020. The results show that: (1) Ecosystem services in Guizhou showed distinct trends from 2000 to 2020: supporting and regulating services declined and then recovered, and provisioning services steadily increased, while cultural services remained stable but varied across cities. (2) Human well-being generally improved over time, with health remaining stable and the HSI rising across most cities, although security levels fluctuated and remained low in some areas. (3) The contribution of ecosystem services to human well-being peaked in 2010–2015, followed by declines in central and northern regions, while southern and western areas maintained or improved their levels. (4) Supporting and regulating services were positively correlated with HWB security, while cultural services showed mixed effects, with strong synergies between culture and health in cities like Liupanshui and Qiandongnan. Overall, this study quantified the coupled dynamics between ecosystem services and human well-being through a carbon flow framework, which not only offers a unified metric for cross-dimensional analysis but also reduces subjective bias in evaluation. This integrated approach provides critical insights for crafting spatially explicit land management policies in Guizhou and offers a replicable methodology for exploring sustainable development pathways in other ecologically fragile karst regions worldwide. Compared with conventional ecosystem service frameworks, the carbon flow approach provides a process-based, dynamic mediator that quantifies biogeochemical linkages in LUCC–ESs–HWB systems, which is particularly important in fragile karst regions. However, we acknowledge that further empirical comparison with traditional ESs metrics could strengthen the framework’s generalizability. Full article
