This study investigates the concept of landscape services (LS), which integrate environmental and sociocultural dimensions of sustainable development. Recognizing landscapes as essential to daily life and well-being, the research aims to support sustainable spatial planning by analyzing both their potential and their actual use. The study has three main objectives: (1) to assess the potential of 16 selected landscape types to provide six key LS through expert evaluation; (2) to determine actual LS usage patterns among the local community (residents); and (3) to identify agreements and discrepancies between expert assessments and resident use. The services analyzed include providing space for daily activities; regulating spatial structure through diversity and compositional richness; enhancing physical and mental health; enabling passive and active recreation; supporting personal fulfillment; and fostering social interaction. Expert-based surveys and participatory mapping with residents were used to assess the provision and use of LS. The results indicate consistent evaluations for forest and historical urban landscapes (high potential and use) and mining and transportation landscapes (low potential and use). However, significant differences emerged for mountain LS, rated highly by experts but used minimally by residents. These insights highlight the importance of aligning expert planning with community needs to promote sustainable land use policies and reduce spatial conflicts. Full article

Background: Gait kinematics address the analysis of joint angles and segment movements during walking. Although there is work in the literature to solve the problems of forward (FK) and inverse kinematics (IK), there are still problems related to the accuracy of the estimation of Cartesian and joint variables, singularities, and modeling complexity on gait analysis approaches. Objective: In this work, we propose a framework for two-dimensional gait analysis addressing the singularities in the estimation of the joint variables using quaternion-based kinematic modeling. Methods: To solve the forward and inverse kinematics problems we use the dual quaternions’ composition and Damped Least Square (DLS) Jacobian method, respectively. We assess the performance of the proposed methods with three gait patterns including normal, toe-walking, and heel-walking using the RMSE value in both Cartesian and joint spaces. Results: The main results demonstrate that the forward and inverse kinematics methods are capable of calculating the posture and the joint angles of the three-DoF kinematic chain representing a lower limb. Conclusions: This framework could be extended for modeling the full or partial human body as a kinematic chain with more degrees of freedom and multiple end-effectors. Finally, these methods are useful for both diagnostic disease and performance evaluation in clinical gait analysis environments. Full article

Road density is a key indicator of human activity, causing habitat loss and fragmentation. Soil fungi, essential for ecosystem functioning, are sensitive bioindicators. Yet their responses to road density in urban green spaces are poorly characterized. Here, we analyzed the composition of the dominant fungal community, examined both the direct and indirect effects of road density on soil fungal communities, and identified specialist species. Focusing on Shanghai, China, a rapidly urbanizing city, we considered both edaphic factor and the road network. Through machine learning and Spearman correlation regression analyses, we quantified the relative importance of road density and edaphic factor in shaping fungal community composition and employed occupancy-specificity modeling to identify specialist taxa. Our results revealed that Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Zygomycota, Rozellomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Glomeromycota were the dominant phyla, accounting for 93% of the retrieved ITS sequences. Road density was found to be the primary driver of fungal community composition, followed by soil lead and potassium concentrations. Notably, opportunistic pathogens (Acremonium spp.) correlated positively with road density (p < 0.001). Specialist species in high-density areas were primarily pathotrophic fungi, while saprotrophic fungi dominated in low-density areas. These findings highlight the need for urban planning strategies to mitigate the ecological impact of road density. Full article

This study presents a simulation-based damage modeling and fatigue risk assessment of a reusable ceramic matrix composite thruster designed for short-duration, green bipropellant propulsion systems. The thruster is constructed from a fiber-reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite composed of zirconium diboride, silicon carbide, and carbon fibers. Time-resolved thermal and structural simulations are conducted on a validated thruster geometry to characterize the severity of early-stage thermal shock, stress buildup, and potential degradation pathways. Unlike traditional fatigue studies that rely on empirical fatigue constants or Paris-law-based crack-growth models, this work introduces a simulation-derived stress-margin envelope methodology that incorporates ±20% variability in temperature-dependent material strength, offering a physically grounded yet conservative risk estimate. From this, a normalized risk index is derived to evaluate the likelihood of damage initiation in critical regions over the 0–10 s firing window. The results indicate that the convergent throat region experiences a peak thermal gradient rate of approximately 380 K/s, with the normalized thermal shock index exceeding 43. Stress margins in this region collapse by 2.3 s, while margin loss in the flange curvature appears near 8 s. These findings are mapped into green, yellow, and red risk bands to classify operational safety zones. All the results assume no active cooling, representing conservative operating limits. If regenerative or ablative cooling is implemented, these margins would improve significantly. The framework established here enables a transparent, reproducible methodology for evaluating lifetime safety in ceramic propulsion nozzles and serves as a foundational tool for fatigue-resilient component design in green space engines. This article deals with the effect of Kr15+ ion irradiation on the structure and properties of partially stabilized zirconium dioxide (ZrO2 + 3 mol. % Y2O3) ceramics. Ion irradiation is used to simulate radiation damage typical of operating conditions in nuclear reactors and space technology. It is shown that with an increase in the irradiation fluence, point defects are formed, dislocations accumulate, and the crystal lattice parameters change. At high fluences (>1013 ions/cm2), a phase transition of the monoclinic (m-ZrO2) phase to the tetragonal (t-ZrO2) and cubic (c-ZrO2) modifications is observed, which is accompanied by a decrease in the crystallite size and an increase in internal stresses. Changes in the mechanical properties of the material were also observed: at moderate irradiation fluences, strengthening is observed due to the formation of dislocation structures, whereas at high fluences (>1014 ions/cm2), a decrease in strength and a potential amorphization of the structure begins. The change in the phase composition was confirmed by X-ray phase analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The results obtained allow a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of radiation-induced phase transformations in stabilized ZrO2 and can be used in the development of ceramic materials with increased radiation resistance. Water systems are highly vulnerable to biofilm formation, which can compromise water quality, operational efficiency, and public health. Factors such as surface material properties and gravitational orientation of the surface play critical roles in the early stages of microbial attachment and biofilm development. This study examines the impact of gravity and surface composition on the initial adhesion of Pseudomonas fluorescens AR11—a model organism for biofilm research. Focusing on stainless steel (SS) and polycarbonate (PC), two materials commonly used in water and wastewater infrastructure, bacterial adhesion was evaluated at surface inclinations of 0°, 45°, 90°, and 180° to assess gravitational impact. After three hours of contact, fluorescence microscopy and image analysis were used to quantify surface coverage and cluster size distribution. The results showed that both material type and orientation significantly affected early biofilm formation. PC surfaces consistently exhibited higher bacterial adhesion at all angles, with modest variations, suggesting that material properties are a dominant factor in initial colonization. In contrast, SS showed angle-dependent variation, indicating a combined effect of gravitational convection and surface characteristics. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of biofilm dynamics under realistic environmental conditions, including those encountered in space systems, and support the development of targeted strategies for biofilm control in water systems and spaceflight-related infrastructure. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites exhibit significant advantages over conventional structural webbing materials, including lightweight and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the localized compression performance of the proposed GFRP grid web–concrete composite beam through experimental and numerical analyses. Three specimen groups with variable shear-span ratios (λ = 1.43, 1.77) and local stiffener specimens were designed to assess their localized compressive behavior. Experimental results reveal that a 19.2% reduction in shear-span ratio enhances ultimate load capacity by 22.93% and improves stiffness by 66.85%, with additional performance gains of 77.53% in strength and 94.29% in stiffness achieved through local stiffener implementation. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis demonstrated a strong correlation with experimental results, showing less than 5% deviation in ultimate load predictions while accurately predicting stress distributions and failure modes. FE parametric analysis showed that increasing the grid thickness and decreasing the grid spacing within a reasonable range can considerably enhance the localized compression performance. The proposed analytical model, based on Winkler elastic foundation theory, predicts ultimate compression capacities within 10% of both the experimental and numerical results. However, the GFRP grid strength adjustment factor βg should be further refined through additional experiments and numerical analyses to improve reliability. Full article

Composite laminates are widely used in aerospace, automotive, construction, and luxury industries, owing to their superior mechanical properties and design flexibility. However, detecting manufacturing defects and in-service damage remains a vital challenge for structural safety. While traditional unsupervised machine learning methods have been used in structural health monitoring (SHM), their high false positive rates limit their reliability in real-world applications. This issue is mostly inherited from their limited ability to capture small temporal variations in Lamb wave signals and their dependence on shallow architectures that suffer with complex signal distributions, causing the misclassification of damaged signals as healthy data. To address this, we suggested an unsupervised anomaly detection framework that integrates a self-attention autoencoder with a Gaussian mixture model (SAE-GMM). The model is solely trained on healthy Lamb wave signals, including high-quality synthetic data generated via a generative adversarial network (GAN). Damages are detected through reconstruction errors and probabilistic clustering in the latent space. The self-attention mechanism enhances feature representation by capturing subtle temporal dependencies, while the GMM enables a solid separation among signals. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed model (SAE-GMM) achieves high detection accuracy, a low false positive rate, and strong generalization under varying noise conditions, outperforming traditional and deep learning baselines. Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) contributes to stroke and dementia. Individuals with CVD have high risk for adverse cognitive outcomes and stroke, possibly due to shared risk factors between CVD, stroke, and dementia, which may be attributed to cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). We aim to determine the association between prevalent CVD and atrial fibrillation (AF) with CSVD. Methods: Composite of CVD [coronary heart disease, heart failure (HF)], its individual components, and AF were assessed. Multi-marker CSVD score was used to reflect increasing CSVD burden (cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), high-burden perivascular spaces, extensive white matter hyperintensity, cortical superficial siderosis, or covert brain infarcts were assigned 1 point each, with a range of 0–5). We related prevalent CVD, its individual components, and AF to multi-marker CSVD score and individual CSVD markers using logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, sex, FHS cohort, time between MRI and clinic exam (model-1), and vascular risk factors (model-2). Results: In 3413 participants (mean age: 59 ± 14 years, 53.4% women), 11% had prevalent CVD or AF, 8% had prevalent CVD, and 4% had prevalent AF. One CSVD marker was seen in 23% participants, and 9% had ≥ 2 markers. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, composite prevalent CVD and AF was associated with the presence of one CSVD marker (OR: 1.38, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05–1.84). The association with ≥2 CSVD markers was not significant. Only CMBs were associated with components of CVD and AF, with the highest odds of association with HF. Conclusions: Prevalent CVD (including AF) is associated with the presence of CSVD, with all components associated with CMBs. Full article

The current focus of urban environmental governance is on the traffic noise pollution caused by road transportation. Elevated complex roads, defined as transportation systems comprising elevated roads and underlying ground-level roads, exhibit unique traffic noise distribution characteristics due to the presence of double-decked roads and viaducts. This study conducted noise measurements at two sections of elevated complex roads in Guangzhou, including assessing noise levels at the road boundaries and examining noise distribution at different distances from roads and building heights. The results show that the horizontal distance attenuation of noise in adjacent areas exhibits no significant difference from that of ground-level roads, but substantial discrepancies exist in vertical height distribution. The under-viaduct space experiences more severe noise pollution than areas above the viaduct height, and the installation of sound barriers alters the spatial distribution trend of traffic noise. Given that installing sound barriers solely on elevated roads is insufficient to improve the acoustic environment, systematic noise mitigation strategies should be developed for elevated composite road systems. Additionally, the study reveals that nighttime noise fluctuations are significantly greater than those during the day, further exacerbating residents’ noise annoyance. Full article

This study aims to clarify the longitudinal flexural cracking characteristics in hogging moment regions and propose a practical calculation method for the cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity for a steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite deck structure. The longitudinal flexural behavior of two steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite beams in the hogging moment region is determined through a three-point loading test method. Their failure modes and mechanisms, crack propagation and distribution characteristics are analyzed considering the influence of the reinforcement ratio. The variation of the law of mid-span displacement, maximum crack width, strains and interface slip with load are discussed. Calculation methods for the cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite beams are proposed. The results show that with the increase of the reinforcement ratio, the cracking load and ultimate bending capacity are improved by 11.1% and 6.0%, respectively. However, the development of cracks is inhibited, as the crack width, average crack spacing and strain of the reinforcement bars are reduced as the reinforcement ratio increases. The maximum crack width changes linearly with the load as it is less than 0.2 mm. The theoretical cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of the composite beams considering the tensile contribution of UHPC achieve good agreement with the experimental values. Full article

Fatigue damage in steel–concrete composite structures frequently initiates at welded joints due to stress concentrations and inherent defects. This study investigates the stress intensity factors (SIFs) associated with fatigue cracks in the welds of steel longitudinal beams, employing the FRANC3D–ABAQUS interactive technique. A finite element model was developed and validated against experimental data, followed by the insertion of cracks at both the weld root and weld toe. The influences of stud spacing, initial crack size, crack shape, and lack-of-penetration defects on Mode I SIFs were systematically analyzed. Results show that both weld root and weld toe cracks are predominantly Mode I in nature, with the toe cracks exhibiting higher SIF values. Increasing the stud spacing, crack depth, or crack aspect ratio significantly raises the SIFs. Lack of penetration defects further amplifies the SIFs, especially at the weld root. Based on the computed SIFs, fatigue life predictions were conducted using a crack propagation approach. These findings highlight the critical roles of crack geometry and welding quality in fatigue performance, providing a numerical foundation for optimizing welded joint design in composite structures. This study introduces an analytical framework that integrates the state-space method with generalized thermoelasticity theory to obtain exact solutions for the static and dynamic behaviors of laminated plates featuring imperfect interfaces and resting on a Winkler foundation. The model comprehensively accounts for the foundation-structure interaction, interfacial imperfection, and the coupling between the thermal and mechanical fields. A parametric analysis explores the impact of the dimensionless foundation coefficient, interface flexibility coefficient, and thermal conductivity on the static and dynamic behaviors of the laminated plates. The results indicate that a lower foundation stiffness results in higher sensitivity of structural deformation with respect to the foundation parameter. Furthermore, an increase in interfacial flexibility significantly reduces the global stiffness and induces discontinuities in the distribution of stress and temperature. Additionally, thermal conductivity governs the continuity of interfacial heat flux, while thermo-mechanical coupling amplifies the variations in specific field variables. The findings offer valuable insights into the design and reliability evaluation of composite structures operating in thermally coupled environments. Full article

Tribological processes in extreme environments pose serious material challenges, requiring coatings that resist both wear and corrosion. This review summarizes recent advances in protective coatings engineered for extreme environments such as high temperatures, chemically aggressive media, and high-pressure and abrasive domains, as well as cryogenic and space applications. A comprehensive overview of promising coating materials is provided, including ceramic-based coatings, metallic and alloy coatings, and polymer and composite systems, as well as nanostructured and multilayered architectures. These materials are deployed using advanced coating technologies such as thermal spraying (plasma spray, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF), and cold spray), chemical and physical vapor deposition (CVD and PVD), electrochemical methods (electrodeposition), additive manufacturing, and in situ coating approaches. Key degradation mechanisms such as adhesive and abrasive wear, oxidation, hot corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and tribocorrosion are examined with coating performance. The review also explores application-specific needs in aerospace, marine, energy, biomedical, and mining sectors operating in aggressive physiological environments. Emerging trends in the field are highlighted, including self-healing and smart coatings, environmentally friendly coating technologies, functionally graded and nanostructured coatings, and the integration of machine learning in coating design and optimization. Finally, the review addresses broader considerations such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, long-term durability, maintenance requirements, and environmental regulations. This comprehensive analysis aims to synthesize current knowledge while identifying future directions for innovation in protective coatings for extreme environments. Full article

To meet the rapid maneuverability and lightweight demands of micro-nano satellites, a space micro solid thruster using 3D-printed short glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6GF) composites was developed. Thruster shells with wall thicknesses of 4, 3, and 2.5 mm were designed, and ground ignition tests were conducted to monitor chamber pressure and shell temperature. Compared with conventional metallic thrusters, PA6GF composites have exhibited excellent thermal insulation and sufficient mechanical strength. Under 8 MPa and 2773 K ignition conditions, the shell thickness was reduced to 2.5 mm and could withstand pressures up to 10.37 MPa. These results indicate that PA6GF composites are well-suited for space micro solid thrusters with inner diameters of 15–70 mm, offering new possibilities for lightweight space propulsion system design.
