To address fault-period DC-link overvoltage, the reduction in grid-side active-power regulation margin caused by reactive-current-priority operation, and the double-frequency current fluctuation induced by negative-sequence components under asymmetrical grid faults in a flywheel-assisted permanent-magnet direct-drive wind power system, this paper proposes a coordinated low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) strategy based on DC-link-voltage-threshold partitioning. According to the DC-link voltage level, the operating process is divided into a normal regulation region, a grid-side saturation region, and a flywheel activation region, thereby enabling coordinated regulation between grid-side reactive-current support and flywheel-side active-power absorption. To improve transient smoothness, an anti-windup mechanism together with a bumpless transfer scheme is incorporated into the coordinated control process to suppress integrator saturation and mitigate mode-transition disturbances. In addition, a grid-side proportional–integral–vector resonant controller (PI-VRC) is introduced to improve the suppression of double-frequency current fluctuation under asymmetrical faults and enhance converter capacity utilization. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy can effectively restrain fault-period DC-link voltage rise, improve three-phase current symmetry and grid power quality, and strengthen transient reactive-power support, thereby enhancing the asymmetrical-fault LVRT capability of the system. To address the key problems of low-frequency oscillation and insufficient regulation accuracy at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) in hydro–wind–photovoltaic hybrid systems, which are caused by the randomness of wind and photovoltaic output, the water-hammer effect of hydropower units, and multi-source power coupling, a joint control strategy based on Fractional-Order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) and Co-evolutionary Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (CMOPSO) is proposed. First, a small-signal transfer function model of the system covering photovoltaic inverters, doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs), hydropower units and voltage-source converter-based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) converter stations is established to accurately characterize the water-hammer effect and multi-source dynamic coupling characteristics. Second, a Caputo-type FOPID controller is designed. Compared with traditional integer-order controllers with limited tuning flexibility, the FOPID controller utilizes its five degrees of freedom to address specific multi-source coupling challenges. This precisely compensates for the non-minimum phase lag caused by the water-hammer effect in hydropower units via the fractional derivative link, and effectively smooths the impact of stochastic wind–solar fluctuations on PCC voltage through the memory characteristics of the fractional integral link. This multi-parameter regulation mechanism prevents a trade-off between response speed and overshoot suppression, achieving effective decoupling of complex multi-source dynamic interactions. Third, a dual-objective optimization framework with the Integral of Time-weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) and Oscillatory Disturbance Risk Index (ODRI) as the objectives is constructed. The multi-population co-evolution mechanism of the CMOPSO algorithm is adopted to solve the Pareto-optimal solution set, realizing the coordinated optimization of dynamic response accuracy and oscillation instability risk. Finally, comparative simulations are carried out on the Simulink platform with traditional PI/FOPI controllers and optimization algorithms such as Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization based on the Decomposition/Simple Indicator-Based Evolutionary Algorithm (MPSOD/SIBEA). The results show that the proposed strategy can effectively suppress low-frequency oscillations in the range of 0~30 Hz. Compared with the traditional PI controller, the PCC voltage overshoot is reduced by more than 40%, the oscillation decay time is shortened by 33%, the ITAE and ODRI indices are decreased by 12.58% and 2.47%, respectively, and the stability of DC bus voltage is significantly improved. Its robustness and comprehensive control performance are superior to existing methods, providing an efficient and stable control scheme for power electronics-dominated complex new energy grid-connected systems. With the increasing power fluctuations and growing pressure on grid stability resulting from the high penetration of renewable energy, the demand for exploring various energy storage technologies with large-scale, long-duration, and low-cost features has become increasingly urgent. This paper proposes a novel single-track gravity energy storage generation system. This system utilizes non-standardized masses (such as natural rocks) operating stably on an inclined track, and combines coordinated feedforward–feedback electromagnetic torque control, multi-station loading scheduling, and synchronous loading/unloading strategies to effectively smooth the power fluctuations of renewable energy sources such as wind power. The core innovations of this system lie in: (1) utilizing non-standardized mass units to achieve gravity energy storage, thereby expanding the application scenarios and design flexibility of solid gravity energy storage systems; and (2) introducing intelligent scheduling strategies and multi-station loading coordination to effectively smooth the power output fluctuations caused by load randomness, rendering the system insensitive to load variations. Simulation results verify that, for power smoothing in a 10 MW-level wind farm, the system can accurately track the target power and maintain a stable output over a long duration. The power fluctuations are controlled to under 0.2%, even when the total load varies by 10% and the instantaneous load fluctuates by 5%. This system demonstrates the theoretical feasibility and scalability of utilizing natural rock resources in mountainous terrains for long-duration energy storage, providing a novel solution for long-duration power smoothing in renewable energy systems. This paper proposes a bi-level optimal dispatch model for a wind–solar–thermal-storage hybrid power system that considers the optimal curtailment rate. The upper-level model minimizes net-load fluctuations and curtailment penalties by coordinating renewable curtailment and energy storage scheduling under multiple uncertainty scenarios. The lower-level model minimizes the total operating cost by optimizing thermal unit commitment and dispatch while accounting for deep peak-regulation costs, spinning reserve costs, environmental taxes, and the environmental benefits of renewables. A piecewise nonlinear cost model is introduced to characterize the increasing wear-and-tear and oil-support costs of thermal units operating under deep peak regulation. Simulation results obtained on a modified IEEE 30-bus system demonstrate that, compared with benchmark models, the proposed approach significantly smooths the net-load curve, reduces the peak-to-valley difference, and lowers the total system operating cost. The results further indicate that moderate active curtailment, when coordinated with energy storage, can be more economical than rigid full renewable accommodation. Consequently, active curtailment should be regarded not merely as a loss of renewable energy utilization but as a flexible and economically rational resource for enhancing system security, flexibility, and overall dispatch performance. This paper proposes an advanced wind energy conversion and management framework for improving grid integration and mitigating frequency and power fluctuations caused by wind intermittency. The studied system combines a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), a unidirectional Vienna rectifier on the machine side, a Li-ion battery energy storage system, and a bidirectional Vienna rectifier on the grid side. The main scientific challenge addressed in this work is to ensure efficient wind power extraction, secure battery charging/discharging operation, and stable power exchange with the grid under variable operating conditions. To this end, a comprehensive nonlinear state-space model of the overall system is first established. Then, nonlinear controllers based on integral sliding mode principles are developed to guarantee rotor-speed tracking, DC-bus voltage regulation, battery charging current limitation, and active/reactive power control. In addition, an adaptive observer is designed to estimate the battery open-circuit voltage and support the supervision of the state of charge. An energy management strategy is further proposed to coordinate the operating modes according to grid conditions and battery constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively smooths wind power fluctuations, improves grid support capability, and enhances the overall dynamic performance of the wind energy conversion system. With the integration of renewable energy into traction power supply systems at a high proportion and penetration level, the intermittency and randomness of renewable energy output significantly intensify the fluctuation characteristics of traction loads, posing severe challenges to the stable operation and precise dispatch of the system. To effectively address the dynamic tracking and anti-disturbance issues arising from the dual uncertainties of source and load, this paper proposes a dual-timescale two-layer optimization dispatch strategy based on Model Predictive Control (MPC). In the upper-layer optimization, with the objective of optimal system economic operation, a multi-step rolling optimization method is adopted to formulate a long-timescale baseline dispatch plan, fully considering the temporal correlation of photovoltaic and wind power outputs and the periodic characteristics of traction loads. In the lower-layer optimization, aimed at smoothing power fluctuations and correcting prediction deviations, the technical advantages of supercapacitors—high power density and fast response—are utilized to perform real-time tracking and dynamic compensation of the upper-layer baseline plan. This effectively reduces the impact of prediction errors on control accuracy, achieves smooth control of tie-line power, and enhances overall system stability. Case study results based on an actual railway traction power supply system demonstrate that the proposed method can fully leverage the coordinated and complementary characteristics of the hybrid energy storage system, effectively suppress power fluctuations from renewable energy output and traction loads, and achieve economic operation objectives while ensuring system disturbance rejection performance, thereby validating the effectiveness and practicality of the strategy. Wind power generation exhibits pronounced volatility and intermittency, and direct grid connection may cause instability in grid frequency. To address this issue, this paper proposes an optimisation strategy for hybrid energy storage systems to mitigate wind power fluctuations, integrating lithium-ion batteries with supercapacitors within wind power systems. Firstly, the grid-connected power of wind turbines and the reference power of the energy storage system are determined through dynamic weight adjustment using a weighted filtering algorithm combining adaptive exponential smoothing and recursive averaging algorithms. Secondly, the fish-eagle optimisation algorithm is employed to refine variational modal decomposition parameters. The modal components derived from decomposing the energy storage system’s reference power are converted into Hilbert marginal spectra. Following determination of the cut-off frequency, high-frequency signal components are managed by supercapacitors, while low-frequency components are handled by lithium-ion batteries. Finally, an optimised configuration model for the hybrid energy storage system is constructed to minimise the annual lifecycle target cost. Case study analysis demonstrates that this approach effectively smooths fluctuations in wind power output while fully leveraging the complementary characteristics of both energy storage types, achieving a balance between system economics and overall performance. Gravity storage has become an important development direction of physical energy storage technology due to its high energy conversion efficiency and low site selection difficulty. However, the existing gravity energy storage systems based on pure mechanical transmission still have shortcomings, such as low reliability and high operation and maintenance costs, which seriously limit their promotion. To overcome this obstacle, this paper proposes a linear-motor direct-drive gravity energy storage system (LMDD-GESS) with a simpler structure and higher energy conversion efficiency. The cableless flux-switching permanent magnet linear motor (SFPMLSM) is used to replace the traditional wire rope or chain transmission mechanism and fundamentally eliminates frictional losses. Firstly, in terms of the SFPMLSM, the thrust fluctuation is suppressed through the integrated design of the permanent magnet and armature winding on the mover side and the optimization of the end magnetic blocks. In terms of the system grid connection, the double-closed-loop PI control of the machine side and the three-level coordination strategy of the grid side are established, and the in-phase carrier PWM modulation and harmonic feedback compensation algorithm are used to improve the quality of grid connection. The speed curve optimization and multi-machine-switching scheme are designed to achieve smooth power output. The simulation results show that the proposed system significantly improves the operation efficiency and power output stability and provides a reliable gravity energy storage solution for the high proportion of new energy grids. The rapid development of electromobility increases the need for fast, accessible and robust charging stations devoted to EVs (electric vehicles). Planning a network of such stations poses new challenges—amongst others, a power supply that may power such chargers. One major concept is to utilise wind energy as a power source. The paper analyses meteorological data gathered since 2001 in several stations across Poland to achieve quantitative indexes, which summarise (a) wind power density (WPD) as a metric of energy amount, (b) long-term (multiannual) time trends of amount of energy, (c) short-term stability (and thus predictability) of the wind power. The indexes that cover the abovementioned factors allow the authors to answer the research questions, where the local wind conditions allow the authors to consider the integration of a wind powerplant and a network of EV chargers. Additionally, we investigated locations where the amount of available energy is sufficient, but the variability of wind power impedes its practical exploitation. In such cases, the power system may be extended by an energy storage system that acts as a buffer, smoothing power fluctuations and thereby improving the robustness and reliability of downstream charging systems. To address the lack of inertia in full-power converter wind turbines and the inability of existing mechanical speed regulation technologies to achieve power smoothing without converters, this paper proposes a novel hybrid wind energy storage system integrating a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and an electromechanical flywheel. This system establishes a cascaded topology featuring “CVT-based source-side speed regulation and electromechanical flywheel-based terminal power stabilization.” By utilizing the CVT for speed decoupling and introducing the flywheel via a planetary differential branch, the system retains physical inertia by eliminating large-capacity converters and overcomes the bottleneck of traditional mechanical transmissions, which struggle to balance constant frequency with stable power output. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system reduces the active power fluctuation range by 47.60% compared to the raw wind power capture. Moreover, the required capacity of the auxiliary motor is only about 15% of the rated power, reducing the reliance on power electronic converters by approximately 85% compared to full-power converter systems. Furthermore, during a grid voltage dip of 0.6 p.u., the system restricts rotor speed fluctuations to within 0.5%, significantly enhancing Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) capability. Full article

With the integrated development of new energy and oil and gas production, introducing wind–solar–storage microgrids in coalbed methane well screw pump discharge systems enhances the renewable energy proportion while promoting green development. However, the cyclical, volatile, and random characteristics of wind and photovoltaic generation create scheduling challenges, with insufficient green power consumption reducing renewable energy utilization efficiency and increasing grid dependence. This study establishes an operation scheduling optimization model for coalbed methane well screw pump discharge systems under wind–solar–storage microgrids, minimizing daily operation costs with screw pump rotational speed as decision variables. The model incorporates power constraints of generation units and production constraints of screw pumps, solved using particle swarm optimization. Results demonstrate that energy storage batteries effectively smooth wind and photovoltaic fluctuations, enhance regulation capabilities, and improve green power utilization while reducing grid purchases and system operation costs. At different coalbed methane extraction stages, the model optimally adjusts screw pump rotational speed according to renewable generation, ensuring high pump efficiency while minimizing operation costs, enhancing green power consumption capacity, and meeting daily drainage requirements. To address the critical issue of low reliability caused by fault impacts in large-scale wind farms transmitting power over long distances via flexible DC transmission systems, this study proposes a collaborative solution. First, a new protection scheme integrating variable quantity differential protection, steady-state quantity differential protection and zero-sequence differential protection is proposed. By establishing a refined model of a wind farm with a flexible DC system, the adaptability of the differential protection for the outgoing lines is checked. Simulation results show that the sensitivity of metallic faults within the protection zone is better than 3.0, and the protection reliably remains inactive for faults outside the protection zone. Second, an innovative fault ride-through strategy combining self-regulating resistor circuits with wind farm MPPT load reduction is proposed. During faults on the receiving grid, the DC voltage fluctuation is controlled within 1.05 p.u. through graded switching of resistor modules and dynamic power regulation. This solution offers both rapid response and smooth fault ride-through characteristics, significantly improving the feasibility and economic viability of wind farm integration via flexible DC transmission. The dynamic development of energy storage technologies makes it possible to solve many problems related to the negative impact of renewable sources and fluctuating loads on the power and voltage quality parameters at their point of connection to the distribution grid. By absorbing temporary energy surpluses and covering temporary energy deficits, these technologies enable the smoothing of output power profiles of wind turbines, as well as the reduction in peak power values, for example, in traction substations or fast-charging hubs for electric vehicles. This article discusses the specifics of both applications with particular emphasis on methods for sizing energy storage parameters, methods for their control, and the special effects they allow us to achieve. The methods proposed by the authors allow for the more optimal selection of energy storage parameters in existing energy facilities based on their measured power profiles. The proposed control methods, in turn, allow for not only a reduction in relative changes in power and voltage but also enable an increase in the installed power of wind farms without investing in the modernization of the distribution network, as well as reducing the contracted power of traction substations. The analyses presented in this article are based on power profile measurements of real objects, and the proposed solutions are already being implemented in power infrastructure. Full article

This study examines the issue of wind power smoothing in renewable-energy-grid integration scenarios. Under the “dual-carbon” policy initiative, large-scale renewable energy integration (particularly wind power) has become a global focus. However, the intermittency and uncertainty of wind power output exacerbate grid power fluctuations, posing challenges to power system stability. Consequently, smoothing strategies for wind power energy storage systems are desperately needed to improve operational economics and grid stability. According to current research, single energy storage technologies are unable to satisfy both the system-level economic operating requirements and high-frequency power fluctuation compensation at the same time, resulting in a trade-off between economic efficiency and precision of frequency regulation. Therefore, hybrid energy storage technologies have emerged as a key research focus in wind power energy storage. This study employs the SE-SGMD method, utilizing the distinct characteristics of lithium batteries and supercapacitors to decompose frequency regulation commands into low- and high-frequency components via frequency separation strategies, thereby controlling the output of supercapacitors and lithium batteries, respectively. Additionally, the GA-GWO algorithm is applied to optimize energy-storage-system configuration, with experimental validation conducted. The theoretical contributions of this study include the following: (1) introducing the SE-SGMD frequency separation strategy into hybrid energy storage systems, overcoming the performance limitations of single energy storage devices, and (2) developing a power allocation mechanism on the basis of the inherent properties of energy storage devices. In terms of methodological innovation, the designed hybrid GA-GWO algorithm achieves a balance between optimization accuracy and efficiency. Compared to PSO-DE and GWO-PSO, the GA-GWO energy storage system demonstrates improvements of 21.10% and 17.47% in revenue, along with reductions of 6.26% and 12.57% in costs, respectively. Driven by the “dual carbon” goal, virtual power plants (VPPs) are the core vehicle for integrating distributed energy resources, but the multiple uncertainties in wind power, electricity/heat load, and electricity price, coupled with the impact of carbon-trading cost, make it difficult for traditional scheduling methods to balance the robustness and economy of VPPs. Therefore, this paper proposes an oxy-fuel combustion capture (OCC)-VPP architecture, integrating an OCC unit to improve the energy efficiency of the system through the “electricity-oxygen-carbon” cycle. Ten typical scenarios are generated by Latin hypercube sampling and K-means clustering to describe the uncertainties of source and load probability distribution, combined with the polyhedral uncertainty set to delineate the boundary of source and load fluctuations, and the stepped carbon-trading mechanism is introduced to quantify the cost of carbon emission. Then, a three-stage stochastic–robust scheduling model is constructed. The simulation based on the arithmetic example of OCC-VPP in North China shows that (1) OCC-VPP significantly improves the economy through the synergy of electric–hydrogen production and methanation (52% of hydrogen is supplied with heat and 41% is methanated), and the cost of carbon sequestration increases with the prediction error, but the carbon benefit of stepped carbon trading is stabilized at the base price of 320 DKK/ton; (2) when the uncertainty is increased from 0 to 18, the total cost rises by 45%, and the cost of purchased gas increases by the largest amount, and the cost of energy abandonment increases only by 299.6 DKK, which highlights the smoothing effect of energy storage; (3) the proposed model improves the solution speed by 70% compared with stochastic optimization, and reduces cost by 4.0% compared with robust optimization, which balances economy and robustness efficiently.
