The increasing demand for IoT solutions in smart cities, coupled with the increasing use of sensors and actuators and automation in these environments, has highlighted the need for efficient communication between Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The success of such systems relies on interactions between devices that are governed by communication protocols which define how information is exchanged. However, the heterogeneity of sensor networks (wired and wireless) often leads to incompatibility issues, hindering the seamless integration of diverse devices. To address these challenges, standardisation is essential to promote scalability and interoperability across IoT systems. The IEEE 1451 standard provides a solution by defining a common interface that enables plug-and-play integration and enhances flexibility across diverse IoT devices. This standard enables seamless communication between devices from different manufacturers, irrespective of their characteristics, and ensures compatibility via the Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) and the Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP). By reducing system costs and promoting adaptability, the standard mitigates the complexities posed by heterogeneity in IoT systems, fostering scalable, interoperable, and cost-effective solutions for IoT systems. The IEEE 1451 standard addresses key barriers to system integration, enabling the full potential of IoT technologies. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the challenges transducer networks face around IoT applications, focused on the context of smart cities. This review underscores the significance and potential of the IEEE 1451 standard in establishing a framework that enables the harmonisation of IoT applications. The primary contribution of this work lies in emphasising the importance of adopting the standards for the development of harmonised and flexible systems. Full article

Point-of-interest (POI) recommendation is a crucial task in location-based social networks, especially for enhancing personalized travel experiences in smart tourism. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated significant potential in this domain. Unlike classical deep learning-based methods, which focus on capturing various user preferences, LLM-based approaches can further analyze candidate POIs using common sense and provide corresponding reasons. However, existing methods often fail to fully capture user preferences due to limited contextual inputs and insufficient incorporation of cooperative signals. Additionally, most methods inadequately address target temporal information, which is essential for planning travel itineraries. To address these limitations, we propose PSLM4ST, a novel framework that enables synergistic interaction between LLMs and a lightweight temporal knowledge graph reasoning model. This plugin model enhances the input to LLMs by making adjustments and additions, guiding them to focus on reasoning processes related to fine-grained preferences and temporal information. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the efficacy of PSLM4ST. Full article

In the realm of structural health monitoring (SHM) and smart disaster prevention, accurately assessing the impact forces on emergency structures during natural disasters is crucial for a timely and effective response. Therefore, a theoretical method for the water flow impact force on embankment breach piles was established by combining the numerical model of breach hydraulics with the Morison equation. To assess the accuracy and validity of the proposed theoretical calculation method, a 3D finite element model considering the coupling effect of water flow and pile arrangement was established, and the effects of flow velocity, water depth, and other factors on the force of the plugging structure were studied. A comparative analysis was conducted and indicated that the Morison equation method based on the flow velocity signals can calculate the impact force of the structure within a certain error range when the value of drag force coefficient CD is set to 1.0 and the value of inertia force coefficient CM is set to 2.0, providing a reference for emergency plugging decisions for embankment breaches. The findings provide essential theoretical references for data-driven emergency plugging decisions, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of smart disaster prevention strategies for embankment breaches. There are over 300 million smart homes worldwide and 60.4 million smart homes in the US, using devices like smart thermostats, smart plugs, smart door locks, etc. Yet in this age of smart and connected devices, we still use paper-based sticky notes on doors to display messages such as “Busy, do not disturb”, “In a Zoom meeting”, etc. In this project, a novel IoT-connected digital sticky note system was developed where the user can wirelessly send messages from a smartphone to a sticky note display. The sticky note displays can be hung on the doors of offices, hotels, homes, etc. The display could be updated with the user’s message sent from anywhere in the world. The key design challenge was to develop the display unit to consume as little power as possible to increase battery life. A prototype of the proposed system was developed comprising ultra-low-power sticky note display units consuming only 404 µA average current and having a battery life of more than six months, with a Wi-Fi-connected hub unit, an MQTT server, and a smartphone app for composing the message. This paper presents a model for transactive energy management within microgrids (MGs) that include smart homes and buildings. The model focuses on peer-to-peer (P2P) transactive energy management among these homes, establishing a collaborative use of a cloud energy storage system (CESS) to reduce daily energy costs for both smart homes and MGs. This research assesses how smart homes and buildings can effectively utilize CESS while implementing P2P transactive energy management. Additionally, it explores the potential of a solar rooftop parking lot facility that offers charging and discharging services for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) within the MG. Controllable and non-controllable appliances, along with air conditioning (AC) systems, are managed by a home energy management (HEM) system to optimize energy interactions within daily scheduling. A linear mathematical framework is developed across three scenarios and solved using General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS 24.1.2) software for optimization. The developed model investigates the operational impacts and optimization opportunities of CESS within smart homes and MGs. It also develops a transactive energy framework in a P2P energy trading market embedded with CESS and analyzes the cost-effectiveness and arbitrage driven by CESS integration. The results of the comparative analysis reveal that integrating CESS within the P2P transactive framework not only opens up further technical opportunities but also significantly reduces MG energy costs from $55.01 to $48.64, achieving an 11.57% improvement. This paper presents a novel approach to manage distributed DC microgrids (DCMG) by integrating a time-of-use (ToU) electricity pricing scheme and an internal price rate calculation mechanism. The proposed power-management system is designed to effectively handle uncertainties such as utility grid (UG) availability, fluctuating electricity prices, battery state of charge (SOC) levels, and frequent plug-ins and plug-outs of electric vehicles (EVs). Uncertainties in DCMG systems often lead to inefficiencies, power imbalances, and inexact voltage regulation issues within DCMGs. In addition, to maintain the power balance and constant voltage regulation under various operational states, the proposed scheme also incorporates secondary control into the DCMG power-management system. Unlike the existing approaches that often fail to adapt dynamically to changing conditions, the proposed method is the first approach to consider the concept of internal price rate in designing the DCMG power management. To address this challenge, this approach proposes a more resilient power-management strategy to enhance the efficiency and adaptability of DCMG systems. Extensive simulations and experimental validations demonstrate the practicality and adaptability of the proposed control strategy under diverse test conditions, including operation transitions between grid-connected mode (GCM) and islanded mode (IM), low battery SOC condition, operation transition from the current control mode (CCM) to distributed secondary control mode (DSCM), and EV plug-in scenarios. The test results confirm that the proposed method enhances the reliability, efficiency, and economic viability of DCMG systems, making it a promising solution for future smart grid and renewable energy integrations. This paper presents an experimental analysis of a high-response piezoelectric actuator system for the modular design of hydraulic digital fluid control units. It focuses on determining static and dynamic characteristics, forming the basis for developing a smart Industry 4.0 component that incorporates both actuator and sensor function. The design process examines the main challenges, advantages, disadvantages, and working principles to define parameters that impact the actuator’s behaviour and performance. The new piezoelectric actuator system features three piezoelectric stack actuators in series, enabling simultaneous actuation and sensing by applying and measuring the electrical voltage at each piezo element. The experimental setup and test methodology are explained in detail, revealing that the new design, combined with an appropriate open-loop or closed-loop control method, offers superior actuator stroke control, high stroke resolution, and a high-dynamic step response. This paper proposes a concept of a smart piezo actuator system focused on I4.0 and an actuator administration shell, integrated with 5G and RFID technology, which will allow automatic plug-and-play functionality and efficient interconnection, communication, and data transfer between the hydraulic valve and the piezoelectric actuator system. Emerging distributed intelligence paradigms for the Internet of Things (IoT) call for flexible and dynamic reconfiguration of elementary services, resources and devices. In order to achieve such capability, this paper faces complex interoperability and autonomous decision problems by proposing a thorough framework based on the integration of the Semantic Web of Things (SWoT) and Social Internet of Things (SIoT) paradigms. SWoT enables low-power knowledge representation and autonomous reasoning at the edge of the network through carefully optimized inference services and engines. This layer provides service/resource management and discovery primitives for a decentralized collaborative social protocol in the IoT, based on the Linked Data Notifications(LDN) over Linked Data Platform on Constrained Application Protocol (LDP-CoAP). The creation and evolution of friend and follower relationships between pairs of devices is regulated by means of novel dynamic models assessing trust as a usefulness reputation score. The close SWoT-SIoT integration overcomes the functional limitations of existing proposals, which focus on either social device or semantic resource management only. A smart mobility case study on Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) illustrates the benefits of the proposal in pervasive collaborative scenarios, while experiments show the computational sustainability of the dynamic relationship management approach. A smart city (SC) includes different systems that are highly interconnected. Transportation and energy systems are two of the most important ones that must be operated and planned in a coordinated framework. In this paper, with the complete implementation of the SC, the performance of each of the network elements has been fully analyzed; hence, a nonlinear model has been presented to solve the operation and planning of the SC model. In the literature, water treatment issues, as well as energy hubs, subway systems (SWSs), and transportation systems have been investigated independently and separately. A new method of subway and electric vehicle (EV) interaction has resulted from stored energy obtained from subway braking and EV parking. Hence, considering an SC that simultaneously includes renewable energy, transportation systems such as the subway and EVs, as well as the energy required for water purification and energy hubs, is a new and unsolved challenge. In order to solve the problem, in this paper, by presenting a new system of the SC, the necessary planning to minimize the cost of the system is presented. This model includes an SWS along with plug-in EVs (PEVs) and different distributed energy resources (DERs) such as Photovoltaics (PVs), Heat Pumps (HPs), and stationary batteries. An improved grey wolf optimizer has been utilized to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. Moreover, four scenarios have been evaluated to assess the impact of the interconnection between SWSs and PEVs and the presence of DER technologies in the system. Finally, results were obtained and analyzed to determine the benefits of the proposed model and the solution algorithm. Full article

Power lines are commonly utilized for energy transmission, and they serve as a conduit for data exfiltration or infiltration in some specific scenarios. This paper explores the feasibility of establishing bidirectional communication between a modified plug and the equipment power line within an air-gapped network organization and with external entities. Bidirectional air-gap communication includes two scenarios, the data leak from air-gapped networks and the transmission of external data to air-gapped networks, namely, exfiltration and infiltration. In the exfiltration scenario, software in the air-gapped networks modulates and encodes data by manipulating the power consumption of the equipment during transmission, which is then sent outside through the power line. The device utilizes a smart plug power meter to record current fluctuations and subsequently decode any leaked data. In the infiltration scenario, a smart plug is used to control the power supply status of a device’s power cord, enabling data encoding and decoding by turning the power supply on and off. The software in the air-gapped equipment captures and decodes the power supply status to infiltrate. We discuss relevant literature and provide scientific background on smart plugs and power line communication. We simulate the communication scenario, propose a communication scheme, and present data modulation techniques as well as a communication transmission protocol for air-gap channels. Our evaluation of the PowerBridge air-gap channels demonstrates that data can leak from the air-gapped computer into the power line at an approximate rate of 30 bps, which can be captured by the smart plug. Additionally, it is possible for data to penetrate from the smart plug into air-gapped networks at a speed exceeding 1 bps. Full article

The growing popularity of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) is due to their environmental advantages. But uncoordinated charging of a large number of PHEVs can lead to a significant surge in peak loads and higher charging costs for PHEV owners. To end this, this paper introduces an innovative approach to address the issue by proposing a multi-objective weighting control for coordinated charging of PHEVs in a future smart grid, which aims to find an economically optimal solution while also considering load stabilization with large-scale PHEV penetration. Technical constraints related to the owner’s demand and power limitations are considered. In the proposed approach, the charging behavior of PHEV owners is modeled by a normal distribution. It is observed that owners typically start charging their vehicles when they arrive home and stop charging when they go to their workplace. The charging cost is then calculated based on the tiered electricity price and charging power. By adjusting the cost weighting factor and the load stability weighting factor in the multi-objective function, the grid allows for flexible weight selection between the two objectives. This approach effectively encourages owners to actively participate in coordinated charging scheduling, which sets it apart from existing works. The algorithm offers better robustness and adaptability for large-scale PHEV penetration, making it highly relevant for the future smart grid. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the desirable performance of theory and simulation. Full article

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are becoming increasingly widespread due to their environmental benefits. However, PHEV penetration can overload distribution systems and increase operational costs. It is a major challenge to find an economically optimal solution under the condition of flattening load demand for systems. To this end, we formulate this problem as a two-layer optimization problem, and propose a hierarchical algorithm to solve it. For the upper layer, we flatten the load demand curve by using the water-filling principle. For the lower layer, we minimize the total cost for all consumers through a consensus-like iterative method in a distributed manner. Technical constraints caused by consumer demand and power limitations are both taken into account. In addition, a moving horizon approach is used to handle the random arrival of PHEVs and the inaccuracy of the forecast base demand. This paper focuses on distributed solutions under a time-varying switching topology so that all PHEV chargers conduct local computation and merely communicate with their neighbors, which is substantially different from the existing works. The advantages of our algorithm include a reduction in computational burden and high adaptability, which clearly has its own significance for the future smart grid. Finally, we demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm in both theory and simulation. Full article

Recent years have witnessed a significant dispersion of renewable energy and the emergence of blockchain-enabled transactive energy systems. These systems facilitate direct energy trading among participants, cutting transmission losses, improving energy efficiency, and fostering renewable energy adoption. However, developing such a system is usually challenging and time-consuming due to the diversity of energy markets. The lack of a market-agnostic design hampers the widespread adoption of blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading globally. In this paper, we propose and develop a novel unified blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading framework, called BPET. This framework incorporates microservices and blockchain as the infrastructures and adopts a highly modular smart contract design so that developers can easily extend it by plugging in localized energy market rules and rapidly developing a customized blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading system. Additionally, we have developed the price formation mechanisms, e.g., the system marginal price calculation algorithm and the pool price calculation algorithm, to demonstrate the extensibility of the BPET framework. To validate the proposed solution, we have conducted a comprehensive case study using real trading data from the Alberta Electric System Operator. The experimental results confirm the system’s capability of processing energy trading transactions efficiently and effectively within the Alberta electricity wholesale market. Full article

In road transport, most vehicles today still rely on internal combustion engines. However, these engines have lower efficiency and generate higher pollution levels compared to electric motors. Consequently, there is a growing interest in the transition from conventional vehicles to electric ones. However, the transition to an electrified road transport system is not without challenges. Among these, the impact that electric vehicle charging will have on the electricity grid is of particular concern. This paper analyzes different charging scenarios for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and proposes charging strategies to minimize their impact on the electricity grid. The analysis is based on a large dataset of trips in urban areas in Italy. The study shows that smart charging of PHEVs can be implemented to minimize the impact on the electricity grid. The implementation of optimized charging strategies can contribute to making PHEVs a valid, eco-sustainable alternative to conventional vehicles while also promoting the stability and efficiency of the electricity grid. The study aims to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the flexible charging strategy by comparing the common charging operation (first in–first out) with other, less impactful charging schemes. In this article, a distributed charging strategy problem for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) with feeder constraints based on generalized Nash equilibria (GNE) in a novel smart charging station (SCS) is investigated. The purpose is to coordinate the charging strategies of all PEVs in SCS to minimize the energy cost of SCS. Therefore, we build a non-cooperative game framework and propose a new price-driven charging control game by considering the overload constraint of the assigned feeder, where each PEV minimizes the fees it pays to satisfy its optimal charging strategy. On this basis, the existence of GNE is given. Furthermore, we employ a distributed algorithm based on forward–backward operator splitting methods to find the GNE. The effectiveness of the employed algorithm is verified by the final simulation results. Full article
