Background: Lifestyle challenges such as prolonged sitting, irregular dietary habits, high stress levels, and lack of physical activity have become increasingly common among working professionals. All these factors contribute to the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure, which in turn result in reduced work performance and quality of life and may further affect health services access through increase healthcare needs. The teaching environment, like many other work environments, is mentally, emotionally, and practically demanding, and it puts extra pressure on those who work in it. Academicians, who devote themselves to guiding young minds, often make unhealthy daily choices and face significant work-related stress, which can lead to serious long-term health problems. This review highlights that health and well-being are shaped not by a single factor such as diet, work patterns, or habits, but by their combined effect. Methods: A study of around 113 studies has highlighted that academicians usually feel drained and physically exhausted. Result: The factors like prolonged fasts, insufficient water intake, long-standing hours, long and continuous talking, and extended periods in the sitting position have added to their stress levels at the workplace. The most critical finding is that these factors do not affect in isolation but impact as a combined interaction. These issues influence each other, thus increasing the vulnerability to lifestyle disorders. Conclusions: This critical problem can be addressed with a Multimodal Assessment Framework that integrates teachers’ data on dietary habits, workplace ergonomics, sleep quality, and levels of physical activity. The presented work also proposes a statistical technique with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, and generates Vulnerability Quotient (VQ) that show lifestyle disease-related exposure of the teachers, which may be further used to provide remedial interventions. These insights can further guide institutions and policymakers to design healthier, supportive, and sustainable teaching environments. Full article

Background and Objectives: Harmful repetitive oral behaviors impose an excessive load on the stomatognathic system. Being unconscious and involuntary, patients are often unaware of their occurrence and, consequently, of their potential consequences. We aimed to screen the Romanian population for harmful oral habits, while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of employing validated and internationally accepted diagnostic instruments for a better approach to these conditions. Materials and Methods: An observational, descriptive study was conducted on 459 adults, recruited through a multiregional convenience sampling from the general population in Romania. Oral behaviors were assessed using the validated Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC-21) questionnaire. Data was analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The sample included 363 women (79.1%) and 96 men (20.9%), with a mean age of 33.3 years. The mean total OBC score was 22.45 ± 10.27, indicating a moderate prevalence of oral behaviors. 60.1% of participants were classified as low-risk and 39.9% as high-risk, with none in the no-risk category. The most frequently reported behaviors were sleeping positions exerting pressure on the mandible (57.7% “very often”), sustained talking (11.3%), and nocturnal bruxism (10.5%). Younger adults (20–49 years) presented significantly higher OBC scores compared to both younger extremes (18 years) and older adults (>60 years) (p < 0.001). No significant gender differences were observed in total OBC scores; however, unilateral chewing, sustained talking, and holding objects between the teeth were significantly more frequent among women (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This is the first study to investigate oral behaviors in a Romanian adult population. Postural and involuntary activities were the most prevalent and age influenced OBC scores, while gender differences were limited to individual behaviors. Conducting screening and implementing therapeutic interventions based on the assessed level of risk could enhance the overall management of the condition. Full article

Lunar dust remains one of the most critical unresolved challenges to long-duration lunar missions. Its sharp, abrasive, and electrostatically charged particles are easily inhaled and can penetrate deep into the lungs, reaching the bloodstream and the brain. Despite airlocks and HEPA filtration systems, dust will inevitably infiltrate lunar habitats and threaten astronaut health. We present a novel patent protected helmet design. This system uses a multilayered, synergistic mitigation approach combining mechanical and electrostatic defenses. The mechanical system delivers HEPA-filtered, ionized air across the user’s face, while the electrostatic barrier repels charged particles away from the respiratory zone. These two systems work together to prevent dust from entering the user’s breathing space. Designed for use inside lunar habitats, this helmet represents a potential solution to an unaddressed, life-threatening problem. It allows astronauts to eat, talk, and sleep while maintaining a protected respiratory zone and provides targeted inhalation-level protection in an environment where dust exposure is otherwise unavoidable. This concept is presented at Technology Readiness Level 2 (TRL 2) to prompt early engagement and feedback from the scientific and engineering communities. Full article

Cyberbullying can be prevalent across different life stages, with lasting traces on mental health across the lifespan. This study aims to (a) explore how cyberbullying is emotionally experienced across three distinct age groups and (b) analyze the influence of cyberbullying on mental health across the lifespan. This study included 883 participants divided into three age groups: 18–39, 40–59, and 60+. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather participants’ experiences and perspectives. The data were then subjected to content analysis, which revealed a number of themes. The first objective revealed the following themes: For ages 18–39: (a) feeling ashamed or humiliated (92.4%), (b) withdrawing from friends and family, and (c) experiencing harassment as positive and difficulties with rules. For ages 40–59: (a) losing interest in hobbies (89.5%), (b) questioning about things they did or did not do, and (c) experiencing a sense of missing out. For ages 60+: (a) negative thoughts and self-talk (91.3%), (b) feeling judged negatively, and (c) feeling financially vulnerable. The second objective showed: For 18–39: (a) depressive symptoms (79.7%), (b) easy anger, and (c) suicidal behavior. For 40–59: (a) anxiety (93.2%), (b) low self-esteem, and (c) the use of substances. For 60+: (a) frustration (78.1%), (b) isolation, and (c) disturbances in sleep and eating patterns. This study highlights the significant psychological and emotional impact of cyberbullying across age groups, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions that address the unique challenges faced by individuals at different life stages. The findings underscore the importance of developing age-specific strategies to mitigate the effects of cyberbullying and to have perpetrators take responsibility for their reckless disregard for others, and ultimately, themselves. Objective: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. In recent years, studies have shown that patients with ADHD often experience sleep problems, raising clinical interest in the potential role of polysomnography (PSG) in the diagnosis and management of ADHD. This study examines polysomnographic findings in children with ADHD who present with diverse sleep complaints. Methods: A cohort of children aged younger than 18 years, diagnosed with ADHD based on DSM-5 criteria, underwent overnight polysomnography. The study assessed various sleep parameters, including sleep latency, sleep efficiency, total sleep time, and the presence of sleep-disordered breathing. Results: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 36 children (29 boys and 7 girls) aged 6 to 14 years, diagnosed with ADHD, who underwent polysomnography between 2021 and 2024. Polysomnographic findings revealed that 77.78% of the children demonstrated significant snoring. Furthermore, 50.0% were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In addition, eight children exhibited parasomnias. Among them, six had bruxism, three were diagnosed with periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), and two experienced sleep talking. Other notable sleep-related conditions included two cases of narcolepsy, one case of prolonged sleep onset latency, and one case of central apnea syndrome. Total sleep time (TST) was significantly longer in females compared to males (400.71 ± 32.68 min vs. 361.24 ± 41.20 min, p = 0.0215), whereas rapid eye movement (REM) latency was longer in males compared to females (118.62 ± 55.60 min vs. 78.57 ± 27.82 min, p = 0.0194). These findings highlight the high prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children with ADHD who present with sleep disturbances. Furthermore, sleep quality, as indicated by longer TST and shorter REM latency, appears to be better in females with ADHD. Conclusions: The findings of this study underscore the critical role of polysomnography (PSG) in the assessment of children with ADHD. PSG provides an objective evaluation of sleep abnormalities commonly associated with ADHD, which may influence symptom manifestation and treatment outcomes. Notably, the results suggest that females with ADHD exhibit better sleep quality, as indicated by longer total sleep time (TST) and shorter rapid eye movement (REM) latency compared to males. We recommend incorporating polysomnography (PSG) into the comprehensive assessment of children with ADHD who present with significant sleep disturbances. Further research is warranted to investigate the impact of targeted interventions for sleep abnormalities on ADHD symptoms, prognosis, and potential sex-specific differences. Full article

The complicated association between sleep apnea and postpartum depression (PPD), two diseases that can have a major influence on a mother’s health and well-being, is examined in this thorough review. An increasing number of people are realizing that sleep apnea, which is defined by repeated bouts of upper airway obstruction during sleep, may be a risk factor for PPD. The literature currently available on the frequency, common risk factors, and possible processes relating these two disorders is summarized in this study. We investigate the potential roles that sleep apnea-related hormone fluctuations, intermittent hypoxia, and fragmented sleep may play in the onset or aggravation of PPD. We also talk about the difficulties in identifying sleep apnea in the postpartum phase and how it can affect childcare and mother–infant attachment. The evaluation assesses the effectiveness of existing screening techniques, available treatments, and how well they manage both illnesses at the same time. Lastly, we identify research gaps and suggest future lines of inquiry to enhance maternal health outcomes. Full article

SIRTs were demonstrated to play an important role in inflammatory, degenerative, and metabolic alterations, constituting the background of the central nervous system. Thus, they seem to be an appropriate object of investigation (as potential biomarkers of disease activity and/or novel therapeutic targets) in multiple sclerosis (MS), which has a complex etiology that comprises a cross-talk between all these processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of SIRT1 and SIRT2 in the serum of patients with the relapsing–remitting type of MS (RRMS), as well as their relationships with various aspects of MS-related disability. Methods: A total of 115 patients with RRMS (78 women, 37 men, mean age 43 ± 9.9) and 39 healthy controls were included in the study. SIRT1 and SIRT2 were detected in the serum using the enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) method. In the RRMS group, relationships were investigated between the SIRT 1 and 2 levels and the demographic data, MS-related clinical variables, and the results of tests evaluating fatigue, sleep problems, cognitive performance, autonomic dysfunction, and depression. Results: The levels of SIRT1 and SIRT2 in RRMS patients were significantly lower than in the controls (11.14 vs. 14. 23, p = 0.04; 8.62 vs. 14.2, p < 0.01). In the RRMS group, the level of both SIRTs was higher in men than in women (15.7 vs. 9.0; 11.3 vs. 7.3, p = 0.002) and showed a significant correlation with the degree of disability (R = −0.25, p = 0.018). No other relationships were found between SIRT levels and the analyzed data. Conclusions: The serum levels of SIRT1 and 2 were decreased in the RRMS patients (especially in the female ones) and correlated with the degree of neurological deficit. The role of SIRTs as biomarkers of disease activity or mediators relevant for “invisible disability” in MS warrants further investigation. Full article

Relatively little attention has been given to mixed anxiety and depression in autistic youth, particularly how this differs between males and females. This study investigated sex-based differences in the prevalence and correlates of mixed anxiety and depression in a sample of 51 autistic males (M age = 10.16 yr, SD = 2.81 yr, and range = 6 yr to 17 yr) and 51 autistic females (M age = − 10.07 yr, SD = 2.76 yr, and range = 6 yr to 17 yr), matched for age, IQ, and autism severity. Self-reports on generalised anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder, morning salivary cortisol, ADOS-2 scores, and WASI-II full-scale scores were collected from these autistic youth, and data on the ASD-related symptoms of these youth were collected from their parents. The data were analysed for total anxiety–depression score levels, for the underlying components of this scale, and for the individual items used in the scale. The results indicate no significant sex differences for the prevalence of mixed anxiety and depression total scores or the underlying components of anxiety and depression or for the individual items of the mixed anxiety–depression scale. There were sex differences in the significant correlates of mixed anxiety and depression: morning cortisol and ASD-related difficulties in social interaction for females, and ASD-related behaviour for males. Males’ feelings of being restless or edgy were correlated with their social interaction and repetitive and restricted behaviour. Females’ difficulties in social interaction were correlated with their concerns about their abilities and their sleeping problems. Females’ sleeping problems, their tendency to talk about dying, and feeling worthless, were correlated with their morning cortisol. These findings suggest that, while mixed anxiety and depression is experienced similarly by autistic males and females at the global, component, and individual item levels, specific aspects of the symptomatology of mixed anxiety and depression are differently associated with aspects of their ASD-related symptomatology and their levels of chronic physiological stress for males and females. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic increased symptoms of stress and anxiety and induced changes in sleep quality, dream activity, and parasomnia episodes. It has been shown that stressful factors and/or bad sleep habits can affect parasomnia behaviors. However, investigations on how COVID-19 has affected sleep, dreams, and episode frequency in parasomnias are rare. The current study focuses on the impact of the pandemic on a specific parasomnia characterized by speech production (sleep talking, ST). Methods: We selected 27 participants with frequent ST episodes (STs) during the pandemic and compared them with 27 participants with frequent STs from a previous study conducted during a pre-pandemic period. All participants performed home monitoring through sleep logs and recorded their nocturnal STs for one week. Results: We observed a higher frequency of STs in the pandemic group. Moreover, STs were related to the emotional intensity of dreams, independent of the pandemic condition. The pandemic was associated with lower bizarreness of dreams in the pandemic group. There were no differences in sleep variables between the two groups. Conclusion: Overall, these results suggest a stressful effect of COVID-19 on the frequency of STs. Both the pandemic and the frequency of STs affect qualitative characteristics of dreams in this population. Full article

There seems to be a consensus that adolescents worldwide are not getting enough sleep. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) in adolescents using the item response theory. A psychometric study was conducted with 2206 adolescents aged 18 and 19 years in the city of São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. The dimensionality of the ESS was assessed by principal component analysis. A Samejima’s graded response model (SGRM) was fitted to it. The findings of this study showed a good internal consistency and the unidimensionality of the ESS. Considering the latent trait continuum, we obtained three levels, with anchor items. For the item ‘Sitting still in a public place’, the adolescents presented a small possibility of dozing in level 1, and a medium and great possibility in level 2. The item ‘Sitting around talking to someone’ presented small, medium, and great possibilities of dozing in level 3. The ESS with five items showed satisfactory psychometric properties. In addition, the results from the SGRM showed that adolescents with high levels of sleepiness are likely to nod off or sleep sitting up while talking to someone. This study allows us to understand excessive daytime sleepiness in adolescents. Full article

The aim of the study was to assess the intensity of depressive and anxiety symptoms in those indirectly affected by war in Ukraine and to identify a group of people at particular risk of developing these symptoms. The study encompassed 72 Poles (60 women and 12 men). The measurements were carried out at three time points: (1) in the first month after the outbreak of Russia’s war against Ukraine, (2) in the second month and (3) after six months of the conflict. During the first and second month, the symptom severity of generalized anxiety (GAD-7) was 9.8 ± 5.2 and 7.0 ± 5.6, state anxiety (STAI-X1) was 48.2 ± 10.4 and 45.2 ± 13.9 and depression (BDI) was 10.4 ± 7.5 and 15.4 ± 12.7. After six months, the symptom severity was statistically significantly lower. Greater symptom severity was observed in women, people with low income, those without a job, those who did not have good relationships with people they were close to, those with sleep problems and those who frequently followed the news and talked about the war. This study indicates that in a crisis situation, mental health screening and the identification of people whose condition requires specialized interventions are necessary. Full article

Anxious-Withdrawal and Sleep Problems during Adolescence: The Moderating Role of Peer Difficulties

Anxious-withdrawal is a well-established individual risk factor for psychosocial difficulties during adolescence. It is unknown, however, whether it also places youth at increased risk for physical health problems, such as sleep difficulties. This study examines the concurrent and prospective associations between anxious-withdrawal and six types of sleep difficulties (i.e., sleeping too much, sleeping too little, talking/walking in sleep, being overtired, nightmares, and general trouble sleeping). We further evaluate whether these associations differ for adolescents who are high versus low in exclusion and victimization. The participants were 395 adolescents (Mage = 13.61 years; 35% ethnic minority) who completed peer nominations of anxious-withdrawal, exclusion, and victimization at Time 1 (T1). Their mothers completed reports of sleep difficulties at T1 and at Time 2 (T2). Path analyses revealed unique associations between anxious-withdrawal and several types of sleep difficulties (e.g., sleeping too much) at T1. Analyses also revealed a significant interaction effect between T1 anxious-withdrawal and exclusion/victimization such that anxious-withdrawal was prospectively associated with trouble sleeping only for those young adolescents who are highly excluded/victimized. Our findings are the first to link anxious-withdrawal to a physical health outcome in adolescence and point to the need for future research to not only examine anxious-withdrawal and physical health but also to include assessments of peer difficulties. The National Guard (NG) served as a critical component of the US COVID-19 response while concurrently managing personal COVID-19 responses. Understanding pandemic-related concerns, sleep difficulties, increased substance use, and stress management strategies can promote readiness for subsequent disasters. We surveyed 3221 NG service members (75% Army; 79% enlisted; 52% 30–49 years; 81% male) during COVID-19 (August-November 2020). Almost half were activated in response to COVID-19 (mean = 18.6 weeks) and completed the survey 2–3 months post-activation. Service members indicated great concern about family health (39%), the indefinite nature of the pandemic (35%), and their financial situation (23%). Over one-third reported changes in usual sleep amount, 33% described poor sleep quality, and 21% had trouble falling/staying asleep. Increased substance use was reported by 30%, including increased alcohol (13.5%), tobacco (9%), and caffeine/energy drinks (20.1%) consumption. Chi-square analyses and analyses of variance found those who activated reported more increased tobacco and caffeine/energy drink use versus non-activated, with no sleep difficulties nor alcohol use differences. Helpful stress management strategies included spending time outdoors (53%), exercising (48%), talking to family/friends (38%), and having a daily routine (38%). Specific health-, financial-, and job-related stressors were associated with COVID-19. Incorporating stress management in planning/preventive efforts promotes resilience during disasters. The relationship between smoking and sleep disorders has not been investigated sufficiently yet. Many aspects, especially regarding non-obstructive sleep apnea–hypopnea (OSA)-related disorders, are still to be addressed. All adult patients who visited a tertiary sleep clinic and provided information about their smoking history were included in this cross-sectional study. In total, 4347 patients were divided into current, former and never smokers, while current and former smokers were also grouped, forming a group of ever smokers. Sleep-related characteristics, derived from questionnaires and sleep studies, were compared between those groups. Ever smokers presented with significantly greater body mass index (BMI), neck and waist circumference and with increased frequency of metabolic and cardiovascular co-morbidities compared to never smokers. They also presented significantly higher apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) compared to never smokers (34.4 ± 24.6 events/h vs. 31.7 ± 23.6 events/h, p < 0.001) and were diagnosed more frequently with severe and moderate OSA (50.3% vs. 46.9% and 26.2% vs. 24.8% respectively). Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) (p = 0.13) did not differ between groups. Ever smokers, compared to never smokers, presented more frequent episodes of sleep talking (30.8% vs. 26.6%, p = 0.004), abnormal movements (31.1% vs. 27.7%, p = 0.021), restless sleep (59.1% vs. 51.6%, p < 0.001) and leg movements (p = 0.002) during sleep. Those were more evident in current smokers and correlated significantly with increasing AHI. These significant findings suggest the existence of a smoking-induced disturbed sleep pattern. Background: Sleep talking (ST) is characterized by the production of unaware verbal vocal activations (VBs) during sleep. ST seems potentially linked to linguistic and memory consolidation processes. However, sleep and dream characteristics and the relationship between verbal vocalizations (VBs) and cognitive functions are still unknown. Our study aimed to investigate qualitative sleep and dream features in sleep talkers (STs) compared to healthy subjects (CNTs) through retrospective and longitudinal measures and explore the relationship between ST and memory consolidation. Methods: We recruited N = 29 STs and N = 30 CNTs (age range of 18–35). Participants recorded their dreams and filled out sleep logs for seven consecutive days. Vocal activations of STs were audio-recorded. On the eighth day, we administered a word-pair task. Results: We showed that STs had significantly worse self-reported sleep quality. VBs were positively correlated with sleep fragmentation and negatively associated with the oneiric emotional load. No difference between groups was found in the memory consolidation rate. Conclusions: Although ST is a benign phenomenon, we revealed that ST is associated with more sleep alterations and lower emotional intensity of dreams. In this vein, we support that ST depends on sleep fragmentation and could represent a potential window into sleep-dependent cognitive processes. Full article
