This paper investigates the error rate performance of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems employing opportunistic amplify-and-forward (OAF) relaying under Rayleigh fading conditions. To support both data forwarding and energy harvesting at relays, a power splitting (PS) mechanism is applied. We derive exact and asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) expressions using moment-generating function (MGF) methods, providing analytical insights into how the power splitting ratio ρ and the quality of source–relay (SR) and relay–destination (RD) links jointly affect system behavior. Additionally, we propose a novel approximation that interprets the SWIPT-OAF configuration as an equivalent non-SWIPT OAF model. This enables tractable performance analysis while preserving key diversity characteristics. The framework is extended to include scenarios with partial channel state information (CSI) and Nth best relay selection, addressing practical concerns such as limited relay availability and imperfect decision-making. Extensive simulations validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach under a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and channel conditions. These findings contribute to a flexible and scalable design strategy for SWIPT-OAF relay systems, making them suitable for deployment in emerging wireless sensor and internet of things (IoT) networks. Metro foundation pits are important components of urban infrastructure projects. Dewatering and excavation are essential stages in foundation pit construction; however, this process can significantly induce groundwater drawdown, as well as diaphragm wall deformation and surface settlement. Based on a subway station foundation pit project, in this study, we employ three-dimensional numerical software to simulate the process of dewatering and excavation. A refined model is used to investigate groundwater seepage, the deformation of the retaining structure, and surface settlement under spatial effects. The finite element model accounts for stratified excavation and applied prestress conditions for the support system within the foundation pit. Its accuracy is validated through a comparison and analysis with measured data from the actual foundation pit. The results indicate that foundation pit excavation leads to significant groundwater drawdown around the pit and the formation of a characteristic “funnel-shaped” drawdown curve. Moreover, extending the diaphragm wall length contributes to maintaining a higher external groundwater level surrounding the foundation pit. The horizontal displacement of the diaphragm wall increases progressively during dewatering and excavation, and the bending moment of the diaphragm wall exhibits a trend consistent with its horizontal displacement. Surface settlement decreases as the length of the diaphragm wall increases. Full article

This paper presents a combined theoretical, numerical, and experimental analysis to investigate the lateral plastic crushing behavior and energy absorption of circular and non-circular thin-walled rings between two rigid plates. Theoretical solutions incorporating both linear material hardening and power-law material hardening models are solved via numerical shooting methods. The theoretically predicted force-denting displacement relations agree excellently with both FEA and experimental results. The FEA simulation clearly reveals the coexistence of an upper moving plastic region and a fixed bottom plastic region. A robust automatic extraction method of the fully plastic region at the bottom from FEA is proposed. A modified criterion considering the unloading effect based on the resultant moment of cross-section is proposed to allow accurate theoretical estimation of the fully plastic region length. The detailed study implies an abrupt and almost linear drop of the fully plastic region length after the maximum value by the proposed modified criterion, while the conventional fully plastic criterion leads to significant over-estimation of the length. Evolution patterns of the upper and lower plastic regions in FEA are clearly illustrated. Furthermore, the distribution of plastic energy dissipation is compared in the bottom and upper regions through FEA and theoretical results. Purely analytical solutions are formulated for linear hardening material case by elliptical integrals. A simple algebraic function solution is derived without necessity of solving differential equations for general power-law hardening material case by adopting a constant curvature assumption. Parametric analyses indicate the significant effect of ovality and hardening on plastic region evolution and crushing force. This paper should enhance the understanding of the crushing behavior of circular and non-circular rings applicable to the structural engineering and impact of the absorption domain. Full article

This study applies a deep neural network (DNN) to optimize the 22.5 m pontoon hull form of a small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) vessel with fin stabilizers, aiming to reduce calm water resistance at a Froude number of 0.8 under even keel conditions. The vessel’s resistance is simplified into three components: pontoon, strut, and fin stabilizer. Four design parameters define the pontoon geometry: fore-body length, aft-body length, fore-body angle, and aft-body angle. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using STAR-CCM+ 2302 provide 1400 resistance data points, including fin stabilizer lift and drag forces at varying angles of attack. These are used to train a DNN in MATLAB 2018a with five hidden layers containing six, eight, nine, eight, and seven neurons. K-fold cross-validation ensures model stability and aids in identifying optimal design parameters. The optimized hull has a 7.8 m fore-body, 6.8 m aft-body, 10° fore-body angle, and 35° aft-body angle. It achieves a 2.2% resistance reduction compared to the baseline. The improvement is mainly due to a reduced Munk moment, which lowers the angle of attack needed by the fin stabilizer, thereby reducing drag. The optimized design provides cost-efficient construction and enhanced payload capacity. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of combining CFD and deep learning for hull form optimization. The existence of fault zones in high-intensity earthquake areas has a serious impact on engineering structures, and the longitudinal response of tunnels crossing faults needs further in-depth research. To analyze the tangential contact effect between the surrounding rock and the tunnel lining, and the axial deformation characteristics of the tunnel structure, tangential foundation springs were introduced and a theoretical model for the longitudinal response of the tunnel under fault dislocation was established. Firstly, the tunnel was simplified as a finite-length beam. The normal and tangential springs were taken to represent the interaction between the soil and the lining. The fault’s free-field displacement was applied at the end of the normal foundation spring to simulate fault dislocation, and the differential equation for the longitudinal response of the tunnel structure was obtained. The analytical solution of the structural response was obtained using the Green’s function method. Then, the three-dimensional finite difference method was used to verify the effectiveness of the analytical model in this paper. The results show that the tangential contact effect between the surrounding rock and the lining has a significant impact on the longitudinal response of the tunnel structure. Ignoring this effect leads to an error of up to 35.33% in the peak value of the structural bending moment. Finally, the influences of the width of the fault zone, the soil stiffness of the fault zone, and the stiffness of the tunnel lining on the longitudinal response of the tunnel were explored. As the fault width increases, the internal force of the tunnel structure decreases. Increasing the lining concrete grade leads to an increase in the internal force of the structure. The increase in the elastic modulus of the surrounding rock in the fault area reduces the bending moment and shear force of the structure and increases the axial force. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for the anti-dislocation design of tunnels crossing faults. Full article

Monitoring position and movements of preterm infants is important to ensure their well-being and optimal development. This study evaluates the feasibility of a pressure-sensitive fiber-optic mattress (FM), made entirely of plastic, for two-dimensional analysis of preterm infant movements and positioning. Before clinical use, we developed a simple, replicable, and cost-effective test protocol to simulate infant movements and positions, enabling early identification of technical limitations. Using data from 20 preterm infants, we assessed the FM’s potential to monitor posture and limb motion. FM-derived pressure patterns were compared with camera-based manual annotations to distinguish between different positions and out-of-bed moments, as well as limb-specific movements. Bench-test results demonstrated the FM’s sensitivity to motion and pressure changes, supporting its use in preclinical validation. Clinical data confirmed the FM’s reliability in identifying infant positions and movement patterns, showing an accuracy comparable to camera annotations. However, limitations such as calibration, sensitivity to ambient light, and edge-related artifacts were noted, indicating areas for improvement. In conclusion, the test protocol proved effective for early-stage evaluation of smart mattress technologies. The FM showed promising clinical feasibility for non-obtrusive monitoring of preterm infants, though further optimization is needed for robust performance in neonatal care. Full article

To enhance the anti-overturning performance of poles and prevent tilting or collapse, a prefabricated foundation for distribution lines is developed. Field tests are conducted on five groups of foundations. Based on the test results, finite element analysis (FEA) is employed to investigate the influence of different factors—such as pole embedment depth, foundation locations, soil type, and soil parameters—on the anti-overturning performance of pole prefabricated foundations. The results indicate that under ultimate load conditions, the reaction force distribution at the base of the foundation approximates a triangular pattern, and the lateral earth pressure on the pole follows an approximately quadratic parabolic distribution along the depth. When the foundation size increases from 0.8 m to 0.9 m, the bearing capacity of the prefabricated foundation improves by 8%. Furthermore, when the load direction changes from 0° to 45°, the foundation’s bearing capacity increases by 14%. When the foundation is buried at a depth of 1.0 m, compared with the ground position, the ultimate overturning moment of the prefabricated foundation increases by 10%. Based on field test results, finite element simulation results, and limit equilibrium theory, a calculation method for the anti-overturning bearing capacity of prefabricated pole foundations is developed, which can provide a practical reference for the engineering design of distribution line poles and their prefabricated foundations. This article presents a comparative study of the storage of energy produced by photovoltaic panels by means of two types of batteries: Lead–Acid and Lithium-Ion batteries. The work involved the construction of a model in MATLAB-Simulink for controlling the loading/unloading of storage batteries with energy produced by photovoltaic panels through a buck-type DC-DC convertor, controlled by means of the MPPT algorithm implemented through the method of incremental conductance based on a MATLAB function. The program for the MATLAB function was developed by the author in the C++ programming environment. The MPPT algorithm provides maximum energy transfer from the photovoltaic panels to the battery. The electric power taken over at a certain moment by Lithium-Ion batteries in photovoltaic panels is higher than the electric power taken over by Lead–Acid batteries. Two types of batteries were successively used in this model: Lead–Acid and Lithium-Ion batteries. Based on the results being obtained and presented in this work it may be affirmed that the storage battery Lithium-Ion is more performant than the Lead-Acid storage battery. At the Laboratory of Electrical Machinery and Drives of the Engineering Faculty of Bacau, an experimental stand was built for a storing system for electric energy produced by photovoltaic panels. For controlling DC-DC buck-type convertors, a program was developed in the programming environment Arduino IDE for implementing the MPPT algorithm for incremental conductance. The simulation part of this program is similar to that of the program developed in C++. Through conducting experiments, it was observed that, during battery charging, along with an increase in the charging voltage, an increase in the filling factor of the PWM signal controlling the buck DC-DC convertor also occurred. The findings of this study may be applicable to the storage of battery-generated electrical energy used for supplying electrical motors in electric cars. Full article

This study details how 3-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (3NPEO) behaves in terms of photophysics when exposed to different solvents. The solvatochromic effect study reveals significant polarity shifts in the excited states of the 3NPEO compound, likely due to an intramolecular proton transfer mechanism. Measurements of dipole moments provide insight into their resonance structures in both ground and excited states. Electrochemical analysis revealed a reversible redox process, indicating a favorable charge transport potential. HOMO and LUMO energies of the compound were computed via oxidation and reduction potential standards. 3NPEO exhibits optimal one-photon and two-photon absorption characteristics, validating its suitability for visible wavelength laser applications in photonic devices. Furthermore, molecular docking and dynamics simulations demonstrated strong interactions between 3NPEO and the progesterone receptor enzyme, supported by structure–activity relationship (SAR) analyses. In vitro cytotoxicity assays on the MDAMB-231 breast cancer cell line showed moderate tumor cell inhibitory activity. Apoptosis studies confirmed the induction of both early and late apoptosis. These findings suggest that 3NPEO holds promise as a potential anticancer agent targeting the progesterone receptor in breast cancer cells. Overall, the findings highlight the substantial influence of solvent polarity on the photophysical properties and the design of more effective and stable therapeutic agents. Full article

To improve the stability and safety of electric vehicles during medium-to-high-speed cornering, this paper investigates torque differential control for dual rear-wheel hub motor drive systems, extending beyond traditional speed control based on the Ackermann steering model. A nonlinear three-degree-of-freedom vehicle dynamics model incorporating the Dugoff tire model was established. By introducing the maximum correntropy criterion, an unscented Kalman filter was developed to estimate longitudinal velocity, sideslip angle at the center of mass, and yaw rate. Building upon the speed differential control achieved through Ackermann steering model-based rear-wheel speed calculation, improvements were made to the conventional exponential reaching law, while a novel switching function was proposed to formulate a new sliding mode controller for computing an additional yaw moment to realize torque differential control. Finally, simulations conducted on the Carsim/Simulink platform demonstrated that the maximum correntropy criterion unscented Kalman filter effectively improves estimation accuracy, achieving at least a 22.00% reduction in RMSE metrics compared to conventional unscented Kalman filter. With torque control exhibiting higher vehicle stability than speed control, the RMSE values of yaw rate and sideslip angle at the center of mass are reduced by at least 20.00% and 4.55%, respectively, enabling stable operation during medium-to-high-speed cornering conditions. Cold-formed steel (CFS) channel beams are increasingly used as primary structural elements in modern construction due to their lightweight and high-strength characteristics. To accommodate building services, these members often feature perforations—typically circular and unstiffened—produced by punching. Recent studies indicate that adding edge stiffeners, particularly around circular web openings, can improve flexural strength. Extending this idea, attention has shifted to hexagonal web perforations; however, limited research exists on the bending performance of hexagonal cold-formed steel channel beams (HCFSBs). This study presents a detailed nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis to evaluate and compare the flexural behaviour of HCFSBs with unstiffened (HUH) and edge-stiffened (HEH) hexagonal openings. The FE models were validated against experimental results and expanded to include a comprehensive parametric study with 810 simulations. Results show that HEH beams achieve, on average, a 10% increase in moment capacity compared to HUH beams. However, when evaluated using current Direct Strength Method (DSM) provisions, moment capacities were underestimated by up to 47%, particularly in cases governed by lateral–torsional or distortional buckling. A reliability analysis confirmed that the proposed design equations yield accurate and dependable strength predictions. Full article

This study develops a novel transverse steel damper (TSD) to enhance the seismic performance of tall-pier girder bridges, featuring superior lateral strength and energy dissipation capacity. The TSD’s design and arrangement are presented, with its hysteretic behavior simulated in ABAQUS. Key parameters (yield strength: 3000 kN; initial gap: 100 mm; post-yield stiffness ratio: 15%) are optimized through seismic analysis under near-fault ground motions, incorporating pulse characteristic investigations. The optimized TSD effectively reduces bearing displacements and results in smaller pier top displacements and internal forces compared to the bridge with fixed bearings. Due to the higher-order mode effects, there is no direct correlation between top displacements and bottom internal forces. As pier height decreases, the S-shaped shear force and bending moment envelopes gradually become linear, reflecting the reduced influence of these modes. Medium- to long-period pulse-like motions amplify seismic responses due to resonance (pulse period ≈ fundamental period) or susceptibility to large low-frequency spectral values. Higher-order mode effects on bending moments and shear forces intensify under prominent high-frequency components. However, the main velocity pulse typically masks the influence of high-order modes by the overwhelming seismic responses due to large spectral values at medium to long periods. Full article

A novel macrodesign for a dental implant characterized by a non-monotonic variation in core diameter and thread shape has been described to produce lower stress levels during insertion as compared to conventional tapered implants. Two finite element models resembling the lower left molar region with preformed osteotomies were created based on a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Insertion of both the novel and the conventional, tapered implant type were simulated using Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP) files of both implant types. Von Mises equivalent stress, strain development, and amount of redistributed bone were recorded. The conventional implant demonstrated a continuous increase in strain values and reaction moment throughout the insertion process, with a brief decrease observed during the final stages. Stress levels in the cortical bone gradually increased, followed by a reduction when the implant was finally positioned subcrestally. The novel implant achieved the maximum magnitude of reaction moment and cortical bone strain values when the implant’s maximum core diameter passed the cortical bone layer at around 60% of the insertion process. Following a notable decrease, both the reaction moment and stress started to rise again as the implant penetrated further. The novel implant removed more bones in the trabecular region while the conventional implant predominantly interacted with cortical bone. Overall, the novel design seems to be less traumatic to alveolar bone during the insertion process and hence may lead to reduced levels of initial peri-implant bone loss. Full article

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are among the most prevalent occupational health issues, particularly affecting public transport drivers due to prolonged sitting, constrained postures, and poorly adaptable cabins. This study addresses the ergonomic risks associated with tram driving, aiming to evaluate biomechanical load and postural stress in relation to drivers’ anthropometric characteristics. A combined methodological approach was applied, integrating two standardized observational tools—RULA and REBA—with anthropometric modeling based on three representatives European morphotypes (SmallW, MidM, and TallM). ErgoFellow 3.0 software was used for digital posture evaluation, and lumbar moments at the L4/L5 vertebral level were calculated to estimate lumbar loading. The analysis was simulation-based, using digital human models, and no real subjects were involved. The results revealed uniform REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) and RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) scores of 6 across all morphotypes, indicating moderate to high risk and a need for ergonomic intervention. Lumbar moments ranged from 51.35 Nm (SmallW) to 101.67 Nm (TallM), with the tallest model slightly exceeding the recommended ergonomic thresholds. These findings highlight a systemic mismatch between cabin design and user variability. In conclusion, ergonomic improvements such as adjustable seating, better control layout, and driver education are essential to reduce the risk of WMSDs. The study proposes a replicable methodology combining anthropometric, observational, and biomechanical tools for evaluating and improving transport workstation design. Full article

The design and optimization of drive distribution strategies are critical for enhancing the performance of Formula Student electric racing cars, which face demanding operational conditions such as rapid acceleration, tight cornering, and variable track surfaces. Given the increasing complexity of racing environments and the need for adaptive control solutions, a multi-mode adaptive drive distribution strategy for four-wheel-drive Formula Student electric racing cars is proposed in this study to meet specialized operational demands. Based on the dynamic characteristics of standardized test scenarios (e.g., straight-line acceleration and figure-eight loop), two control modes are designed: slip-ratio-based anti-slip control for longitudinal dynamics and direct yaw moment control for lateral stability. A CarSim–Simulink co-simulation platform is established, with test scenarios conforming to competition standards, including variable road adhesion coefficients (μ is 0.3–0.9) and composite curves. Simulation results indicate that, compared to conventional PID control, the proposed strategy reduces the peak slip ratio to the optimal range of 18% during acceleration and enhances lateral stability in the figure-eight loop, maintaining the sideslip angle around −0.3°. These findings demonstrate the potential for significant improvements in both performance and safety, offering a scalable framework for future developments in racing vehicle control systems.
