The production and reproduction of small ruminants, such as sheep and goats, living under extensive range-grazing conditions may be influenced by the availability of nutrients and the mineral content of forage. This study evaluated the biodistribution of calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na) and zinc (Zn) in whole blood, serum, blood clots, plasma, plasma sediments and hair in sheep and goats. Forty clinically healthy, nonpregnant female sheep and goats were enrolled in the study. Hair and blood samples were performed in duplicate to assess mineral concentration in biological substrates using a Thermo Scientific iCAP- Q ICP-MS spectrometer (Omaha, Ne, USA). Higher levels of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, and Na were observed in blood and blood clots than in serum, plasma, plasma sediments and hair in sheep and goats. A significant effect of species was observed for all the bioactive element concentrations in the investigated substrates (p < 0.05). The results revealed positive correlations between serum and plasma for all investigated elements in sheep (p < 0.0001) and for Mn and Na in goats (p < 0.001), as well as between serum and blood for Ca, Fe, Mg and Mn in sheep (p < 0.0001) and for Ca and Mn in goats (p < 0.001). Plasma and blood showed a positive correlation for Ca, Fe, and Mn (p < 0.001) in sheep, and for Fe, Mn, Na, and Zn (p < 0.0001) in goats. These findings elucidate differences in biodistribution between sheep and goats, offering valuable insights for livestock production. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of global mortality. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs)—such as acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure—are critical endpoints in the clinical research. The existing research has shown metal ions are important regulators of cardiovascular functioning, and defective metal handling may be associated with an increased risk of CVD. This study examines the association of the plasma/serum levels of magnesium, copper, and zinc with MACE incidence and the prevalence of circulatory system diseases, by using electronic health records from a subset of the Scottish population. Methods: We categorised individuals by high, low, or normal plasma/serum metal levels, and calculated the percentage of those who subsequently developed a MACE, identified using related International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes from hospital admission records. Logistic regression was employed to analyse the association between pre-event metal ion levels and the development of specific circulatory system disease subgroups. Results: This study found abnormal magnesium, high copper, and low zinc were associated with a higher risk of developing MACEs. Low magnesium, high copper, or low zinc were associated with increased risks of various circulatory diseases, with specific variations, like low copper increasing venous and lymphatic disease risk. Conclusions: Our findings suggest abnormal plasma metal profiles are associated with the development of MACEs and circulatory disease events, underscoring the importance of monitoring plasma metal levels for cardiovascular risk management and prevention. Background and Objectives: Several micro- and macro-nutrient malnutrition states that are routinely assessed during clinical care of women in the antenatal period have been proposed as risk factors for preeclampsia. However, there is a paucity of data on the potential use of these biomarkers for detection of preeclampsia. The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the association of biomarkers from routine clinical tests, and those specific to micro- and macro-nutrient malnutrition, with the risk of preeclampsia. Materials and Methods: Venous blood samples of 250 participants with preeclampsia and 150 pregnant women without preeclampsia were collected and assayed immediately for the full blood count, urea and electrolytes, high-density cholesterol (HDL), total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OxLDL), and selenium, in addition to urine iodine concentration (UIC). Results: The serum potassium/magnesium ratio (K+/Mg2+), UIC, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), lymphocyte percentage (L/WBC%), and the oxidized LDL/albumin ratio (OxLDL/Alb) were identified as independent predictors of preeclampsia. Conclusions: Serum potassium/magnesium ratio and other analytes essential for various biological processes, some of which are assayed during routine care, were significantly associated with preeclampsia, warranting further exploration as potential screening biomarkers in low-resource settings. (1) Background: Hair growth can function as an indicator of an animal’s health and nutritional status, furnishing a valuable means for early diagnosis and timely modifications to management practices, and is influenced by hormones, the immune system, and the levels of minerals within the animal’s body. (2) Methods: In this study, a total of 81 yaks were selected and divided into three groups according to their ages (1–2 years, 3–4 years, 5–6 years), and the concentrations of melatonin, dihydrotestosterone, IgA, IgG, and IgM in their blood serum and the levels of Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, and P in both their blood serum and hair were detected. (3) Results: The levels of melatonin and dihydrotestosterone in yaks aged 1–2 years were significantly higher than those of other age groups (p < 0.001). In addition, the concentration of melatonin in male yaks was markedly greater than that in female yaks (p < 0.05). When it came to immunoglobulins, the IgA level in 1–2-year-old yaks was strikingly higher than those in yaks aged 3–4 years and 5–6 years (p < 0.05). In terms of mineral elements, the concentrations of calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron in the blood serum of 1–2-year-old and 5–6-year-old yaks were significantly elevated compared to those in 3–4-year-old yaks. However, there was no notable difference between the 1–2-year-old and 5–6-year-old groups. The correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between DHT and the levels of melatonin and IgA in yaks. Additionally, a significant correlation was observed between IgA and IgG, as well as between IgA and the levels of Fe, Mg, and Ca. It is likely that they jointly regulate the hair growth and immune processes of yaks. (4) Conclusions: There are positive correlations among melatonin, dihydrotestosterone, and IgA in the blood serum and the content of Fe and Mg in the hair to varying degrees, implying these indicators may jointly regulate yak hair growth and immune status. These research findings provide data support for applied research into evaluating the overall health status of yaks through the growth status of hair or by measuring the mineral content in hair in a non-invasive way. Transport stress prior to slaughter frequently induces a stress response, negatively affecting meat quality. This study investigated the impact of dietary potassium magnesium sulphate (PMS) supplementation during the fattening stage on the stress response and meat quality in finishing pigs subjected to transport stress. The experiment involved two phases. Initially, 48 finishing pigs (68.00 ± 0.40 kg) were randomly allocated into two groups: a control group receiving a basal diet (CON) and a PMS-supplemented group receiving the basal diet with 0.50% PMS. Each group was housed in six pens, with four pigs per pen. After 60 days of feeding, in the second phase, two pigs from each pen were randomly selected for slaughter, with one pig subjected to a 4 h transportation stress prior to slaughter. Pigs were categorized into four treatment groups based on diet and stress: (1) control without transport stress, (2) control with transport stress, (3) PMS-supplemented without transport stress, and (4) PMS-supplemented with transport stress. Serum, jejunum, and longissimus thoracis muscle (LM) samples were collected. The results indicated that dietary PMS supplementation did not significantly affect growth performance during the fattening stage (p > 0.05). However, following transport, the PMS pigs showed a reduction in norepinephrine and cortisol concentrations (p = 0.09, p < 0.05) and a significant increase in serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity (p < 0.05). Furthermore, PMS supplementation significantly increased serum catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (p < 0.05), while significantly reducing cholesterol (CHO) levels (p < 0.05). Transport stress adversely affected the intestinal health of finishing pigs, as evidenced by a decrease in intestinal villus height (0.05 < p < 0.1), a condition ameliorated by PMS supplementation. Additionally, transported pigs exhibited a higher drip loss24h in LM (p < 0.05), which was also alleviated through PMS supplementation. In conclusion, PMS supplementation mitigates transport stress and improves meat quality in finishing pigs. Full article

There is a lack of information on mineral interactions that take place during a heifer’s pregnancy when nutrient demand is high. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the interactions between the macro minerals calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) and the trace elements copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) and cobalt (Co) in pregnant heifers. Twenty-four pregnant heifers (age 18.2 ± 0.14 months; 87.5 ± 4.74 days in gestation; 497 ± 8.5 kg of body weight) were used in a 7 d digestibility trial (indirect method using lignin as a marker) during which they were fed a diet that provided minerals in accordance with NASEM requirements for gestating beef cattle. At the end of the digestibility trial, blood (jugular venipuncture) and liver (biopsy) samples were collected from each heifer. Multiple linear regression models were developed based on the main correlations and by considering collinearity effects between variables. Iron intake positively affected Mo concentration in serum, which was >10 µg/dL for most of the animals. Apparent absorption of Fe was negatively affected by Mo intake and Ca to P ratio in feed, whereas Se absorption was negatively affected by Fe intake and positively by Mo intake. The absorption coefficients of Mo and Fe were inversely related, emphasizing the interactions between these elements. Serum Fe and Cu in the liver were positively correlated, while liver Fe was inversely related to liver Mn. Fewer interactions were observed between the macro minerals. In conclusion, within the interactions observed, those between Fe and Mo deserve special attention, as high dietary Fe is commonly found in typical ruminant diets, and high serum Mo may indicate molybdenosis. Furthermore, high Fe intake appears to impact Se and Mn utilization. Full article

The findings regarding trace element concentrations in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and healthy controls are inconsistent, and therefore, we determined to gather them in the form of a review to further indicate the need for more advanced knowledge development. In our study, we reviewed articles and studies that involved the topics of micronutrient and metal associations with the occurrence and development of type 2 diabetes. We mainly included works regarding human-based studies, but with limited research results, animal-based research was also taken into account. With some newer studies, we reached for initial assumptions of previous statements. The results indicated that higher serum levels of lead, cadmium, arsenic, bromine, barium, strontium, nickel, aluminum, calcium, copper, and ferritin are positively associated with diabetic prevalence. Both too-low and too-high levels of zinc, selenium, and magnesium may be connected to the development of diabetes. Chromium has the capability of insulin response modulation, with enhanced insulin-cell binding, and thus, lower serum levels of chromium can be found in diabetic patients. There are contradictory discoveries regarding manganese. Its supplementation can possibly cease the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. On the contrary, other studies reported that there is no such connection. Our work indicates that, as micronutrients play a significant role in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders, more research regarding their bodily homeostasis and type 2 diabetes should be conducted. Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a chronic inflammatory disease with multiple well-known risk factors. Although epidemiological studies report improvements in classical CAD risk-factor control, except for diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular diseases remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the current population. The question regarding the atherosclerotic plaque location in particular arteries remains unanswered. Research on novel possible aspects that could help to properly understand atherosclerosis pathophysiology is essential. This study was based on a body trace-elements analysis, measured in scalp hair samples, as possible co-factors of various enzymes that may be crucial for CAD development. Methods: A total of 133 consecutive male patients with a median age of 71 (65–75) years, who presented with anginal symptoms of CCS class 2.0 (0.3) without previous heart-related interventions, were included in the analysis. The results of the cine-angiography were compared with the demographical, clinical, and laboratory results, followed by scalp-hair trace analysis. The possible predictors for coronary disease locations in the left descending artery (LAD), the circumflex artery (Cx), and the right coronary artery (RCA) were the subjects of this study. Results: Statistically significant differences in the scalp-hair trace elements concentration between the CAD and normal angiogram groups were noticed for magnesium (p = 0.003), calcium (p < 0.001), chromium (p = 0.011), and copper (p = 0.043). The multivariable analysis for epicardial atherosclerotic disease revealed the co-existence of diabetes mellitus (OR: 2.94, 95% CI: 1.27–6.79, p = 0.012) as a possible causative factor for the LAD location. The multivariable analysis for the atherosclerosis location in the Cx artery presented scalp-hair magnesium as a possible predictive factor (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96–1.00, p = 0.024). The multivariable model for the RCA location of atherosclerotic plaque indicated scalp-hair Zn concentration (0.99, 95% CI: 0.98–1.00, p = 0.002) and serum HDL (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.04–0.09, p = 0.016). Conclusions: Possible hypothetical distinctive pathomechanisms, in particular, coronary artery involvement, in atherosclerosis processes are presented in the male group. Diabetes mellitus was found to be the primary factor for left descending artery disease. The low scalp-hair magnesium concentration was found to be a possible risk factor involved in the circumflex artery atherosclerotic plaque location. The inverse relation between serum high-density lipoprotein, the scalp hair zinc concentration, and right coronary disease was noticed. Full article

Introduction: Magnesium is a vital intracellular cation crucial for over 320 enzymatic reactions related to energy metabolism, musculoskeletal function, and nucleic acid synthesis and plays a pivotal role in human physiology. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of dysmagnesemia in patients with diabetes mellitus and evaluate its correlations with glycemic control, medication use, and diabetic complications. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, including 316 patients aged 18 years or older with diabetes mellitus. Data included demographics, medical history, medications, and biochemical parameters. Serum total magnesium concentrations were measured, and dysmagnesemia was defined as magnesium ≤ 0.69 mmol/L for hypomagnesemia and ≥1.01 mmol/L for hypermagnesemia. Results: The prevalence of hypomagnesemia in patients with diabetes was 17.1% (95% CI: 13.3–21.7%), and hypermagnesemia was 4.1% (95% CI: 2.4–7.0%). Females were significantly overrepresented in the hypomagnesemia group, while the hypermagnesemia group showed a higher prevalence of hypertension, retinopathy, an increased albumin/creatinine ratio, chronic kidney disease (CKD), elevated creatinine levels, and a lower adjusted calcium concentration. The multinominal logistic regression exhibited that the female sex and higher serum-adjusted calcium were independent risk factors of hypomagnesemia. In contrast, the presence of hypertension, higher levels of albumin/creatinine ratio, and stage 5 CKD were independent risk factors of hypermagnesemia. Conclusions: Hypomagnesemia was common among patients with diabetes mellitus; however, hypermagnesemia was associated with microvascular complications. Full article

Andersen–Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a multisystem channelopathy characterized by periodic paralysis, ventricular arrhythmias, prolonged QT interval, and facial dysmorphisms occurring in the first/second decade of life. High phenotypic variability and incomplete penetrance of the genes causing the disease make its diagnosis still a challenge. We describe a three-generation family with six living individuals affected by ATS. The proband is a 37-year-old woman presenting since age 16, with episodes of muscle weakness and cramps in the pre-menstrual period. The father, two brothers, one paternal uncle and one cousin also complained of cramps, muscle stiffness, and weakness. Despite normal serum potassium concentration, treatment with potassium, magnesium, and acetazolamide alleviated paralysis attacks suggesting a dyskalemic syndrome. Dysmorphic features were noted in the proband, only later. On the ECG, all but one had normal QT intervals. The affected males developed metabolic syndrome or obesity. The father had two myocardial infarctions and was implanted with an intracardiac cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). A genetic investigation by WES analysis detected the heterozygous pathogenic variant (NM_000891.2: c.652C>T, p. Arg218Trp) in the KCNJ2 gene related to ATS, confirmed by segregation studies in all affected members. Furthermore, we performed a review of cases with the same mutation in the literature, looking for similarities and divergences with our family case. Full article

Background: This study aimed to evaluate age-specific variations in the blood levels of micronutrients, homocysteine, and CoQ10, along with physical activity (PA) patterns, among 123 Austrian adult bankers in operational and frontline roles (mean age: 43 years; 50% female). Methods: Blood analysis was conducted to assess micronutrients and the serum concentrations of homocysteine and CoQ10. The micronutrient values in whole blood were compared to sex-specific reference ranges and categorized as below, within, or above them. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was utilized to assess PA patterns. Participants were classified as young adults (18–34 years), middle-aged adults (35–49 years), and older adults (50–64 years). Results: Significant age-based differences were found in participants’ mean homocysteine levels (p = 0.039) and homocysteine categories (p = 0.034), indicating an increasing prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia with age. No significant difference between age categories was observed for sex, BMI, diet types, PA levels, sedentary behavior, and CoQ10 (p > 0.05). There was no significant age-based difference in the blood concentrations of most minerals and vitamins (p > 0.05), except for magnesium among females (p = 0.008) and copper among males (p = 0.042). Conclusion: The findings offer initial evidence of the age-related differences in the health status of adult bankers, providing insights for customized approaches to occupational health that support the importance of metabolic health and overall well-being across adulthood. The biosynthesis of thyroid hormones is essential for brain and neurological development. It requires iodine as a key component but is also influenced by other nutrients. Evidence for the combined nutrient status in relation to thyroid hormones during pregnancy is limited. We aimed to investigate the joint associations of iodine, selenium, zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron with maternal thyroid functions in 489 pregnant women from Hangzhou, China. Serum levels of six essential minerals and thyroid function parameters were measured during the first antenatal visit. Linear regression, quantile g-computation and Bayesian kernel machine regression were used to explore the individual and joint relationships between the six minerals and thyroid hormones. Linear regression analyses revealed that calcium was positively associated with free triiodothyronine (FT3). Zinc was positively associated with free thyroxine (FT4). Iodine was negatively associated with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and positively associated with FT3 and FT4. The quantile g-computation and BKMR models indicated that the joint nutrient concentration was negatively associated with TSH and positively associated with FT3 and FT4. Among the six minerals, iodine contributed most to thyroid function. The findings suggested that maintaining the appropriate concentration of minerals, either as individuals or a mixture, is important for thyroid health during pregnancy. Full article

The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia caused by an unhealthy lifestyle is increasing worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. One of the causes of hypercholesterolemia is an unhealthy diet. The aim of this study was to assess the diet quality by determining the daily intake of energy and nutrients in men with an increased serum concentration of total cholesterol (≥5.0 mmol/L) and LDL-cholesterol (≥3.0 mmol/L) and to determine whether there is an association between lipid profile and dietary parameters. The participants were males aged 20 to 40 years (n = 52). The average daily energy, macronutrient, and micronutrient intake was evaluated using the 24-h recall for two non-consecutive days. The average daily intake of total fat (39.2 ± 8.3% kcal) and saturated fatty acids (13.4 ± 4.1% kcal) was higher than recommended, and the intake of carbohydrates (41.7 ± 9.6% kcal) and fiber (15.6 ± 12.4 g) was insufficient. The average daily intake of sodium and phosphorus was too high, while the intake of potassium, magnesium, and calcium was deficient. The intake of all vitamins, except for vitamin B3 and vitamin B6, was also insufficient. The average concentration of HDL-cholesterol in the participants was adequate (1.4 ± 0.2 mmol/L), but the concentration of triglycerides was elevated (1.9 ± 1.3 mmol/L). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between age and triglyceride concentrations (r = 0.35; p < 0.05). In this study, the influence of energy intake and observed nutrients on the lipid profile was not determined. Full article

Antioxidant Minerals Modified the Association between Iron and Type 2 Diabetes in a Chinese Population

Inconsistent findings exist regarding the relationship between heme iron intake and type 2 diabetes (T2D) among Western and Eastern populations. Easterners tend to consume a plant-based diet which is abundant in antioxidant minerals. To examine the hypothesis that antioxidant mineral may modify the relationship between iron and T2D, we performed a case–control study by measuring the serum mineral levels in 2198 Chinese subjects. A total of 2113 T2D patients and 2458 controls were invited; 502 T2D patients and 1696 controls were finally analyzed. In the total population, high serum iron showed a positive association with T2D odds (odds ratio [OR] = 1.27 [1.04, 1.55]); high magnesium (OR = 0.18 [0.14, 0.22]), copper (OR = 0.27 [0.21, 0.33]), zinc (OR = 0.37 [0.30, 0.46]), chromium (OR = 0.61 [0.50, 0.74]), or selenium concentrations (OR = 0.39 [0.31, 0.48]) were inversely associated with T2D odds. In contrast, in individuals with higher magnesium (>2673.2 µg/dL), zinc (>136.7 µg/dL), copper (>132.1 µg/dL), chromium (>14.0 µg/dL), or selenium concentrations (>16.8 µg/dL), serum iron displayed no association with T2D (p > 0.05). Serum copper and magnesium were significant modifiers of the association between iron and T2D in individuals with different physiological status (p < 0.05). Our findings support the idea that consuming a diet rich in antioxidant minerals is an effective approach for preventing T2D. Full article

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the arteries associated with alterations in lipid and other metabolism and is a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD). LDL consists of several subclasses with different sizes, densities, and physicochemical compositions. Small dense LDL (sd-LDL) is a subclass of LDL. There is growing evidence that sd-LDL-C is associated with CVD risk, metabolic dysregulation, and several pathophysiological processes. In this study, we present a straightforward membrane device filtration method that can be performed with simple laboratory methods to directly determine sd-LDL in serum without the need for specialized equipment. The method consists of three steps: first, the precipitation of lipoproteins with magnesium harpin; second, the collection of effluent from a 100 nm filter; and third, the quantification of sd-LDL-ApoB in the effluent with an SH-SAW biosensor. There was a good correlation between ApoB values obtained using the centrifugation (y = 1.0411x + 12.96, r = 0.82, n = 20) and filtration (y = 1.0633x + 15.13, r = 0.88, n = 20) methods and commercially available sd-LDL-C assay values. In addition to the filtrate method, there was also a close correlation between sd-LDL-C and ELISA assay values (y = 1.0483x − 4489, r = 0.88, n = 20). The filtration treatment method also showed a high correlation with LDL subfractions and NMR spectra ApoB measurements (y = 2.4846x + 4.637, r = 0.89, n = 20). The presence of sd-LDL-ApoB in the effluent was also confirmed by ELISA assay. These results suggest that this filtration method is a simple and promising pretreatment for use with the SH-SAW biosensor as a rapid in vitro diagnostic (IVD) method for predicting sd-LDL concentrations. Overall, we propose a very sensitive and specific SH-SAW biosensor with the ApoB antibody in its sensitive region to monitor sd-LDL levels by employing a simple delay-time phase shifted SH-SAW device. In conclusion, based on the demonstration of our study, the SH-SAW biosensor could be a strong candidate for the future measurement of sd-LDL. Full article
