Drosophila suzukii is an invasive pest of many fruit crops worldwide. Employing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) could mitigate D. suzukii population growth and crop damage. This study evaluated the efficacy of SIT on commercial fruit, by (1) validating the quality of irradiated sterile males (male mating competitiveness, courtship, and flight performance) in the laboratory, and (2) assessing population suppression and fruit damage reduction in commercial raspberry fields. Treatment with SIT was compared to the grower’s standard chemical insecticide program throughout the season. The principal metrics of efficacy were trap counts of wild adult female D. suzukii in crops and larvae per fruit during harvesting. These metrics together with monitoring of border areas allowed targeting of high-pressure areas with higher releases of sterile males, to maximise efficacy for a given release number. The sterile male D. suzukii were as competitive as their fertile non-irradiated counterparts in laboratory mating competitiveness and flight performance studies while fertility egg-to-pupae recovery was reduced by 99%. In commercial raspberry crops, season-long releases of sterile males significantly suppressed the wild D. suzukii population, compared to the grower standard control strategy; with up to 89% reduction in wild female D. suzukii and 80% decrease in numbers of larvae per harvested fruit. Additionally, relative fruit waste (i.e., percentage of harvested fruits rejected for sale) at harvest was reduced for early, mid and late harvest crops, by up to 58% compared to the grower standard control. SIT has the potential to provide an effective and sustainable strategy for managing D. suzukii in raspberries, increasing marketable yield by reducing adult populations, fruit damage and waste fruit. SIT could therefore serve as a valuable tool for integrated pest management practices in berry production systems. Full article

Solid biomass (agro-residue) is the most important source of renewable energy. The accelerating impacts of climate change and global population growth contribute to air pollution through the use of fossil fuels. These processes increase the demand for energy. The European Union has adopted a climate action plan to address the above challenges. The main aim of this study was to assess the economic performance of the producers of biomass for energy generation in Poland. The detailed objectives were to determine land resources in the studied agricultural farms and to determine the value of fixed and current assets in the analyzed farms. We used questionnaires as the main method to collect data. Purposive sampling was used to choose the farms. We conducted various tests to analyze the revenues from biomass sales and their normality, such as the Dornik–Hansen test, the Shapiro–Wilk test, the Liliefors test, and the Jargue–Berra statistical test. Moreover, we conducted regression analysis to find factors that are the basis for the economic performance (incomes) of farms that sell biomass. Results: This study demonstrated that biomass sales had a minor impact on the performance of agricultural farms, but they enabled farmers to maintain their position on the market. The economic analysis was carried out on a representative group of Polish agricultural farms, taking into account fixed and current assets, land use, production structure, and employment. The findings indicate that a higher income from biomass sales was generally associated with better economic results per farm and per employee, although not always per hectare of land. This suggests that capital intensity and strategic resource management play a crucial role in the profitability of bioenergy-oriented agricultural production. Conclusions: We concluded that biomass sales had a negligible influence on farm income. But a small income from biomass sales could affect a farm’s economic viability. Full article

For high-growth firms, designing and implementing strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of business models is a key priority. Although these strategies are carefully planned to achieve specific outcomes, these firms also encounter contextual factors inherent to entrepreneurship, as well as the potential negative consequences of operating as small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Consequently, they adapt emergent outcomes to secure positive scaling-up processes. A comprehensive analysis of 69 studies from 1978 to 2023 revealed that 34.8% used sales as the main indicator of high-growth outcomes, 18.8% considered employment to be the most important outcome, and 37.7% incorporated both. The assessment period for these studies spanned three to seven consecutive years. A subsequent review of the existing literature yielded 56 potential new outcomes, emphasising the existence of a diverse array of concepts and metrics with which to assess high-growth performance. The study confirmed sales and positive profits arising during the planning process as strategic outcomes. However, it was also demonstrated that geographical expansion and innovation become emergent outcomes in critical situations. The research also identified that external factors, including an adverse public environment, business context difficulties, and a favourable business environment, may influence the effect of the firm’s high growth. This study presents a comprehensive forecasting approach to evaluate the future of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the United Kingdom through 2035. Using three complementary models—SARIMAX, Prophet with regressors, and XGBoost—the analysis balances statistical robustness, policy sensitivity, and interpretability. Historical data from 2015 to 2024 was used to train the models, incorporating key drivers such as battery prices, GDP growth, public charging infrastructure, and government policy targets. XGBoost demonstrated the highest historical accuracy, making it a strong explanatory tool, particularly for assessing variable importance. However, due to its limitations in extrapolation, it was not used for long-term forecasting. Instead, Prophet and SARIMAX were employed to project EV sales under baseline, optimistic, and pessimistic policy scenarios. The results suggest that the UK could achieve between 2,964,000 and 3,188,000 EV sales by 2035 under baseline assumptions. Scenario analysis revealed high sensitivity to infrastructure growth and policy enforcement, with potential shortfalls of up to 500,000 vehicles in pessimistic scenarios. These findings highlight the importance of sustained government commitment and investment in EV infrastructure and supply chains. By combining machine learning diagnostics with transparent forecasting models, the study offers actionable insights for policymakers, investors, and stakeholders navigating the UK’s zero-emission transition. The accelerated growth of the transport sector has increased oil consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, intensifying global environmental challenges. The electrification of transportation has emerged as a key strategy to achieve sustainability targets, with electric vehicles (EVs) expected to account for 50% of global car sales by 2035. However, widespread adoption requires smart infrastructure capable of enabling dynamic in-motion charging. In this context, Electric Road Systems (ERSs), particularly those based on Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technologies, offer a promising solution by transferring energy between road-embedded transmitters and vehicle-mounted receivers. This study assesses the structural response and service life of conventional and electrified asphalt pavement sections representative of the Spanish road network. Several standard pavement configurations were analyzed under heavy traffic (dual axles, 13 tons) using a hybrid approach combining mechanistic–empirical multilayer modeling and three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The electrified designs integrate prefabricated charging units (CUs) placed at a 9 cm depth, disrupting the structural continuity of the pavement. The results reveal stress concentrations at the CU–asphalt interface and service life reductions of up to 50% in semiflexible pavements. Semirigid sections performed better, with average reductions close to 40%. These findings are based on numerical simulations of standard Spanish sections and do not include experimental validation. Evaluating China’s Electric Vehicle Adoption with PESTLE: Stakeholder Perspectives on Sustainability and Adoption Barriers

The electric vehicle (EV) business model integrates advanced battery technology, dynamic power train architectures, and intelligent energy management systems with ecosystem strategies and digital services. It incorporates environmental sustainability through lifecycle analysis and renewable energy integration. China, with 9.49 million EV sales in 2023 (33% market share), faces infrastructure gaps constraining further growth. China is strategically mitigating CO2 emissions while fostering economic expansion, notwithstanding constraints such as suboptimal battery technology advancements, elevated production expenditure, and enduring ecological impacts. This Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental (PESTLE) assessment, operationalized through a survey of 800 stakeholders and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences IBM SPSS SPSS (Version 28) quantitative analysis (factor loading = 0.73 for Technology; eigenvalue = 4.12), identifies infrastructure gaps as the dominant barrier (72% of stakeholders). Political factors (β = 0.82) emerged as the strongest adoption predictor, outweighing economic subsidies in significance. The adoption of EVs in China presents a significant prospect for reducing CO2 emissions and advancing technology. However, economic barriers, market dynamics, inadequate infrastructure, regulatory uncertainty, and social acceptance issues are addressed in the assessment. The study recommends prioritizing infrastructure investment (e.g., 500 K fast-charging stations by 2027) and policy stability to overcome adoption barriers. This study provides three key advances: (1) quantification of PESTLE factor weights via factor analysis, revealing technological (infrastructure) and political factors as dominant; (2) identification of infrastructure gaps, not subsidies, as the primary adoption barrier; and (3) demonstration of infrastructure’s persistence post-subsidy cuts. These insights redefine EV adoption priorities in China. Full article

Background: This study develops a decision-making framework for the identification and performance preservation of strategic products using a non-parametric analysis of items within the product portfolio. Methods: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the sensitivity analysis of Inverted Data Envelopment Analysis (IDEA) are adapted to explore a new application area in growth product management. A field study from the retail sector of a developing economy is conducted to evaluate the method’s practicality. Results: This study suggests that the power of suppliers, product shelf life, and the ratio of sales to inventory are important supply chain considerations in identifying strategic products accommodated in Slow-Moving Consumer Goods (SMCG) supply chains. Conclusions: The field study shows that sensitivity analysis, in the new application area, provides insights for the identification and performance preservation of strategic items in a product portfolio. Data-driven solutions tailored to the operational needs of the case company and its different product categories conclude this article.. Full article

Since the beginning of the last decade, digital technological achievements have ushered the economies of developed countries into the fourth industrial revolution, transforming industries into smart ones, referred to as “Industry 4.0”, enabling them to innovate as a prerequisite for sustainable development and economic growth. At the same time, the European Union’s institutions are adopting strategies and programs to transform the European industry into a climate-neutral one, aiming to achieve this by 2050. The authors, participating in the introduction of Lean tools and digital technologies into one of the European shipyards using the “CULIS” (Connect Universal Lean Improvement System) methodology, recognize the high potential of its contribution to the European Commission’s guidelines for transitioning the economy to a sustainable one, and for this purpose, they present it in this paper. Namely, the methodology in question not only theoretically results in a “quick” implementation of tools and doctrines—with an approximately 36-month total duration of the process—but also encompasses as many as three transformations: Lean, digital, and green; an analysis of a methodology with such characteristics significantly adds to the originality of this study. The current stage of the observed shipyard’s “triple” transformation process already results in significant improvements—e.g., an increase in productivity by around 21% or a reduction in sales process costs by 38%. However, given its ongoing pilot phase, (further) analyses of improvements in (European) shipbuilding competitiveness and profitability that can be achieved through digital Lean management of projects’ realization process are implied. The real estate market significantly influences individual lives, corporate decisions, and national economic sustainability. Therefore, constructing a data-driven, interpretable real estate market prediction model is essential. It can clarify each factor’s role in housing prices and transactions, offering a scientific basis for market regulation and enterprise investment decisions. This study comprehensively measures the evolution trends of the real estate markets in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, China, from 2003 to 2022 through three dimensions. Then, various machine learning methods and interpretability methods like SHAP values are used to explore the impact of supply, demand, policies, and expectations on the real estate market of China’s first-tier cities. The results reveal the following: (1) In terms of commercial housing sales area, adequate housing supply, robust medical services, and high population density boost the sales area, while demand for small units reflects buyers’ balance between affordability and education. (2) In terms of commercial housing average sales price, growth is driven by education investment, population density, and income, with loan interest rates serving as a stabilizing tool. (3) In terms of commercial housing sales amount, educational expenditure, general public budget expenditure, and real estate development investment amount drive revenue, while the five-year loan benchmark interest rate is the primary inhibitory factor. These findings highlight the divergent impacts of supply, demand, policy, and expectation factors across different market dimensions, offering critical insights for enterprise investment strategies. The aim of this article is to assess the sale structure impact of selected, popular brands of passenger vehicles on total CO2 emissions in the context of the energy transition in the transport sector. A detailed analysis was conducted of the projected sales of gasoline-, diesel-, hybrid-, as well as electric-powered vehicles over the years 2021–2028. Based on the available empirical data, a mathematical model was developed to estimate emissions over the entire life cycle of vehicles, taking into account the unit carbon footprint of each type of drivetrain and the expected number of vehicles sold. The results indicate a gradual decline in total CO2 emissions during the analyzed period, mainly due to the increasing share of alternative drivetrains. Despite the growth in electric vehicle sales, their impact on emission reductions remains limited due to the long lifespan of conventional vehicle fleets. The article concludes with a proposal to expand the LCA model to include regional, energy, and recycling components, which could help in formulating more effective climate policies. Full article

This work analyzes the electric vehicle (EV) sales trends of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and trends in the growth of Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) charging infrastructure station scenarios in Europe and Italy. It offers a comprehensive view of market trends, technical developments, infrastructure development, and worldwide standardization initiatives for policymakers, researchers, and industry. A detailed classification of the charging technologies of EVs, i.e., conductive, wireless power transfer (WPT), battery swapping (BS), and different EV types, is presented. Finally, this work provides a comparative overview of charging standards and protocols, including the ones established by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and Standardization Administration of China (SAC), emphasizing interoperability and cross-border integration to accelerate the transition to clean transportation. Digital transformation is crucial for businesses to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving marketplace. It is a strategic choice that enables organizations to improve customer service, strengthen supplier relationships, and boost sales and business growth, ultimately enhancing their competitive stance. The Internet of Things (IoT) has become a transformative force across various domains, leveraging interconnected devices and sensors to gather and analyse data, thus enhancing decision making, efficiency, and innovation. This paper analyses the strategic competition between two 3PL firms integrating IoT technologies. Based on a game-theoretic model, the study uses Monte Carlo simulation and K-means clustering to identify distinct strategic groups and optimal adoption ranges. The findings highlight risks of over- or under-investments as well as asymmetric outcomes. Also, a set of recommendations and managerial insights are provided for better decision making in a tech-competitive setting. Full article

This study examines rural walking tourism as a sustainable strategy for revitalizing regional economies and preserving natural environments, focusing on the DMZ Punch Bowl in South Korea. Although rural walking tourism has been widely promoted for sustainability, little is known about its operation in geopolitically sensitive and militarized ecological zones, such as the Korean DMZ. Adopting the qualitative case study method, we explored three essential conditions for sustainable rural walking tourism: environmental friendliness, experiential immersion and sense of place, and local economic revitalization through stakeholder cooperation. We employed a hybrid thematic analysis using inductive and deductive coding to analyze the triangulated data collected from interviews, field observations, and policy documents. In-depth interviews with ten walking tourism experts revealed that storytelling that emphasizes local history, ecological conservation, and unique cultural identity enhances tourists’ emotional attachment and sense of place immersion. The DMZ Punch Bowl case was selected due to its effective integration of these elements, achieved through a collaborative governance structure involving government agencies, military units, and local communities. The findings highlight that coordinated management and stakeholder cooperation are crucial for balancing land use policies, ecological preservation, and tourism safety. Additionally, walking tourism significantly contributes to local economic growth through direct spending, job creation, increased resident incomes, the sale of local specialties, and participation in experiential activities. This study provides valuable insights and a replicable model for sustainably developing walking tourism in similarly sensitive or ecologically significant rural areas. Full article

Risk Assessment of Live-Streaming Marketing Based on Hesitant Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Group Decision-Making Method

(1) Background: With the deep integration of e-commerce and video technology, live-streaming marketing has emerged globally and maintained rapid growth. However, most of the current research on live-streaming e-commerce marketing focuses on merchants’ sales strategies and consumers’ purchase intentions, and there is relatively little research related to the risks of live-streaming e-commerce marketing. Nevertheless, with the development of live-streaming e-commerce marketing and its integration with technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality (VR), live-streaming e-commerce marketing still faces challenges such as unclear subject responsibility, difficulty in verifying the authenticity of marketing information, and uneven product quality. It also harbors problems such as the ethical misbehavior of AI anchors and the excessive beautification of products by VR technology. (2) Methods: This study systematically analyzes the scenarios of live-streaming marketing to elucidate the mechanisms of risk formation. Utilizing fault tree analysis (FTA) and risk checklist methods, risks are identified based on the three core elements of live-streaming marketing: “people–products–scenes”. Subsequently, the Delphi method is employed to refine the initial risk indicator system, resulting in the construction of a comprehensive risk indicator system comprising three first-level indicators, six second-level indicators, and 16 third-level indicators. A hesitant fuzzy multi-attribute group decision-making method (HFMGDM) is then applied to calculate the weights of the risk indicators and comprehensively assess the live-streaming marketing risks in live broadcast rooms of three prominent celebrity anchors in China. Furthermore, a detailed analysis is conducted on the risks associated with the six secondary indicators. Based on the risk evaluation results, targeted recommendations are proposed. This study aims to enhance consumers’ awareness of risk prevention when conducting live-streaming transactions and pay attention to related risks, thereby safeguarding consumer rights and fostering the healthy and sustainable development of the live-streaming marketing industry. (3) Conclusions: The results show that the top five risk indicators in terms of weight ranking are: Ethical Risk of the AI Anchor (A4), VR Technology Promotion Risk (F3), Anchor Reputation (A1), Product Quality (D1), and Logistics Distribution Service Quality (D2). The comprehensive live-streaming marketing risk of each live broadcast room is Y > L > D. Based on the analysis results, targeted recommendations are provided for anchors, MCN institutions, merchants, supply chains, and live-streaming platforms to improve consumer satisfaction and promote sustainable development of the live-streaming marketing industry. Artificial intelligence (AI) has significant potential to transform small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), yet its adoption is often hindered by challenges such as limited financial and human resources. This study addresses this issue by investigating the core AI technologies adopted by SMEs, their broad range of applications across business functions, and the strategies required for successful implementation. Through a systematic literature review of 50 studies published between 2016 and 2025, we identify prominent AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI, and their applications in enhancing efficiency, decision-making, and innovation across sales and marketing, operations and logistics, finance and other business functions. The findings emphasize the importance of workforce training, robust technological infrastructure, data-driven cultures, and strategic partnerships for SMEs. Furthermore, the review highlights methods for measuring and optimizing AI’s value, such as tracking key performance indicators and improving customer satisfaction. While acknowledging challenges like financial constraints and ethical considerations, this research provides practical guidance for SMEs to effectively leverage AI for sustainable growth and provides a foundation for future studies to explore customized AI strategies for diverse SME contexts.
