The safe and reliable operation of autonomous vehicles is contingent on comprehensive testing. However, the operational scenarios are inexhaustible. Corner cases, which critically influence autonomous vehicle safety, occur at an extremely low probability and follow a long-tail distribution. Corner cases can be defined as combinations of driving task and scenario elements. These scenarios are characterized by low probability, high risk, and a tendency to reveal functional limitations inherent to autonomous driving systems, triggering anomalous behavior. This study constructs a novel corner case dataset using naturalistic driving data, specifically tailored for autonomous vehicle testing. A scenario marginality quantification method is designed to analyze multi-source naturalistic driving data, enabling efficient extraction of corner cases. Heterogeneous scenarios are systematically transformed, resulting in a dataset characterized by diverse interaction behaviors and standardized formatting. The results indicate that the scenario marginality of the dataset constructed in this study is 2.78 times that of mainstream naturalistic driving datasets, and the scenarios exhibit considerable diversity. The trajectory and velocity fluctuations, quantified at 0.013 m and 0.021 m/s, respectively, are consistent with the kinematic characteristics of real-world driving scenarios. These results collectively demonstrate the dataset’s high marginality, diversity, and applicability. Full article

In the era of digital intelligence, digital media landscapes increasingly influence cultural tourism consumption. Consumerism capitalizes on tourists’ superficial aesthetic commonalities, constructing a homogenized media imagination that leads to collective convergence in travel decisions, which obscures aspects of local culture, poses safety risks, and results in fleeting local tourism booms. In this study, semistructured interviews were conducted with 36 tourists, and NVivo12.0 was used for three-level node coding in a qualitative analysis to explore the digital media attributions of conformist travel behavior. The findings indicate that digital media landscapes exert a “digital persuasion” effect by reconstructing self-experience models, directing the individual gaze, and projecting idealized self-images. These mechanisms drive tourists to follow digital traffic trends and engage in imitative behaviors, ultimately shaping the phenomenon of “group roaming”, grounded in the psychological effect of herd behavior. This study proposes an integrated framework that combines nonlinear stochastic vibration analysis with reliability assessment to address the safety issues of cable systems under damage conditions. First of all, a mathematical model of the damaged cable is established by introducing damage parameters, and its static configuration is determined. Using the Pearl River Huangpu Bridge as a case study, the accuracy of the analytical solution for the cable’s sag displacement is validated through the finite difference method (FDM). Furthermore, a quantitative relationship between the damage parameters and structural response under stochastic excitation is developed, and the nonlinear stochastic dynamic equations governing the in-plane and out-of-plane motions of the damaged cable are derived. Subsequently, a Gaussian Radial Basis Function Neural Network (GRBFNN) method is employed to solve for the steady-state probability density function of the system response, enabling a detailed analysis of how various damage parameters affect structural behavior. Finally, the First-Order and Second-Order Reliability Method (FORM/SORM) are used to compute the reliability index and failure probability, which are further validated using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Results show that the severity parameter η shows the highest sensitivity in influencing the failure probability among the damage parameters. For the system of the Pearl River Huangpu bridge, an increase in the damage extent δ from 0.1 to 0.4 can reduce the reliability-based service life of by approximately 40% under fixed values of the damage severity and location, and failure risk is highest when the damage is located at the midspan of the cable. This study provides a theoretical framework from the point of stochastic vibration for evaluating the response and associated reliability of mechanical systems; the results can be applied in practice with guidance for the engineering design and avoid potential damages of suspended cables. This study addresses critical safety challenges in sustainable urban mobility by developing a probabilistic framework for lane-change risk prediction on congested expressways. Utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-captured trajectory data from 784 validated lane-change events, we construct a Bayesian network model integrated with an I-CH scoring-enhanced MMHC algorithm. This approach quantifies risk probabilities while accounting for driver decision dynamics and input data uncertainties—key gaps in conventional methods like time-to-collision metrics. Validation via the Asia network paradigm demonstrates 80.5% reliability in forecasting high-risk maneuvers. Crucially, we identify two sustainability-oriented operational thresholds: (1) optimal lane-change success occurs when trailing-vehicle speeds in target lanes are maintained at 1.0–3.0 m/s (following-gap < 4.0 m) or 3.0–6.0 m/s (gap ≥ 4.0 m), and (2) insertion-angle change rates exceeding 3.0°/unit-time significantly elevate transition probability. These evidence-based parameters enable traffic management systems to proactively mitigate collision risks by 13.26% while optimizing flow continuity. By converting behavioral insights into adaptive control strategies, this research advances resilient transportation infrastructure and low-carbon mobility through congestion reduction. Full article

Biofilms are structured microbial communities that pose significant challenges to food safety and quality within the food-processing industry. Their formation on equipment and surfaces enables persistent contamination, microbial resistance, and recurring outbreaks of foodborne illness. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on biofilm formation mechanisms, genetic regulation, and the unique behavior of multi-species biofilms. The review evaluates modern detection and monitoring technologies, including PCR, biosensors, and advanced microscopy, and compares their effectiveness in industrial contexts. Real-world outbreak data and a global economic impact analysis underscore the urgency for more effective regulatory frameworks and sanitation innovations. The findings highlight the critical need for integrated, proactive biofilm management approaches to safeguard food safety, reduce public health risks, and minimize economic losses across global food sectors. Improving occupational health and safety (OHS) in the construction industry can contribute to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Yet, workers’ risk-taking behaviors (RTBs) remain a persistent challenge. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and Social Information Processing Theory, this study develops and tests a social influence model to examine how foremen’s safety attitudes (SAs) shape workers’ RTBs. Drawing on survey data from 301 construction workers in China, structural equation modeling reveals that foremen’s SAs significantly and negatively predict workers’ RTBs. However, the three dimensions of SAs—cognitive, affective, and behavioral—exert their influence through different pathways. Risk perception (RP) plays a key mediating role, particularly for the cognitive and behavioral dimensions. Furthermore, interpersonal trust (IPT) functions as a significant moderator in some of these relationships. By identifying the micro-social pathways that link foremen’s attitudes to workers’ safety behaviors, this study offers a testable theoretical framework for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (particularly Goals 3 and 8) at the frontline workplace level. The findings provide empirical support for organizations to move beyond rule-based management and instead build more resilient OHS governance systems by systematically cultivating the multidimensional attitudes of frontline leaders. This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents, making road safety education crucial. This study assesses the performance of and users’ opinions on the Route 2 School (R2S) traffic safety education program, designed for secondary school students (13–17 years) in Belgium. The program incorporates gamified e-learning modules containing, among others, podcasts, interactive 360° visuals, and virtual reality (VR), to enhance traffic knowledge, situation awareness, risk detection, and risk management. This study was conducted across several cities and municipalities within Belgium. More than 600 students from school years 3 to 6 completed the platform and of these more than 200 students filled in a comprehensive questionnaire providing detailed feedback on platform usability, preferences, and behavioral risk assessments. The results revealed shortcomings in traffic knowledge and skills, particularly among older students. Gender-based analysis indicated no significant performance differences overall, though females performed better in risk management and males in risk detection. Furthermore, students from cities outperformed those from municipalities. Feedback on the R2S platform indicated high usability and engagement, with VR-based simulations receiving the most positive reception. In addition, it was highlighted that secondary school students are high-risk groups for distraction and red-light violations as cyclists and pedestrians. This study demonstrates the importance of gamified, technology-enhanced road safety education while underscoring the need for module-specific improvements and regional customization. The findings support the broader application of e-learning methodologies for sustainable, behavior-oriented traffic safety education targeting adolescents. Full article

This article presents the design, development, and evaluation of an AI-based assistant tailored to support users in the application of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology for unmanned aircraft systems. Built on a customized language model, the assistant was trained using system-level instructions with the goal of translating complex regulatory concepts into clear and actionable guidance. The approach combines structured definitions, contextualized examples, constrained response behavior, and references to authoritative sources such as JARUS and EASA. Rather than substituting expert or regulatory roles, the assistant provides process-oriented support, helping users understand and complete the various stages of risk assessment. The model’s effectiveness is illustrated through practical interaction scenarios, demonstrating its value across educational, operational, and advisory use cases, and its potential to contribute to the digital transformation of safety and compliance processes in the drone ecosystem. The high pH and heavy metal leaching of argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) slag limit its application in agriculture. Slag carbonation can aid in decreasing slag alkalinity and inhibit heavy metal release; the environmental safety of utilizing carbonated AOD slag (CAS) as a fertilizer remains a topic of significant debate, however. In this work, pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) was planted in CAS-fertilized soil to investigate the accumulation and migration behavior of heavy metals in the soil–plant system and perform an associated risk assessment. Our results demonstrated that CAS addition increases Ca, Si, and Cr concentrations but decreases Mg and Fe concentrations in soil leachates. Low rates (0.25–1%) of CAS fertilization facilitate the growth of pakchoi, resulting in the absence of soil contamination and posing no threat to human health. At the optimal slag addition rate of 0.25%, the pakchoi leaf biomass, stem biomass, leaf area, and seedling height increased by 34.2%, 17.2%, 26.3%, and 8.7%, respectively. The accumulation of heavy metals results in diverging characteristics in pakchoi. Cr primarily accumulates in the roots; in comparison, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Hg preferentially accumulate in the leaves. The migration rate of the investigated heavy metals from the soil to pakchoi follows the order of Cr > Cd > Hg > Ni > Pb; in comparison, that from the roots to the leaves follows the order Cd > Ni > Hg > Cr > Pb. Appropriate utilization of CAS as a mineral fertilizer can aid in improving pakchoi yield, achieving sustainable economic benefits, and preventing environmental pollution. Full article

When emergency incidents, such as bridge damage, abruptly occur on highways and lead to traffic disruptions, the multidimensionality and complexity of driver behaviors present significant challenges to the design of effective emergency response mechanisms. This study introduces a multi-level collaborative emergency mechanism grounded in driver behavior characteristics, aiming to enhance both traffic safety and emergency response efficiency through hierarchical collaboration and dynamic optimization strategies. By capitalizing on human drivers’ perception and decision-making attributes, a driver behavior classification model is developed to quantitatively assess the risk response capabilities of distinct behavioral patterns (conservative, risk-taking, and conformist) under emergency scenarios. A multi-tiered collaborative framework, comprising an early warning layer, a guidance layer, and an interception layer, is devised to implement tailored emergency strategies. Additionally, a rear-end collision risk propagation model is constructed by integrating the risk field model with probabilistic risk assessment, enabling dynamic adjustments to interception range thresholds for precise and real-time emergency management. The efficacy of this mechanism is substantiated through empirical case studies, which underscore its capacity to substantially reduce the occurrence of secondary accidents and furnish scientific evidence and technical underpinnings for emergency management pertaining to highway bridge damage. Migration Safety of Perfluoroalkyl Substances from Sugarcane Pulp Tableware: Residue Analysis and Takeout Simulation Study

The rapid growth of plant-based biodegradable tableware, driven by plastic restrictions, necessitates rigorous safety assessments of potential chemical contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). This study comprehensively evaluated PFAS contamination risks in commercial sugarcane pulp tableware, focusing on the residues of five target PFASs (PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxA, PFPeA) and their migration behavior under simulated use and takeout conditions. An analysis of 22 samples revealed elevated levels of total fluorine (TF: 33.7–163.6 mg/kg) exceeding the EU limit (50 mg/kg) in 31% of products. While sporadic PFOA residues surpassed the EU single compound limit (0.025 mg/kg) in 9% of samples (16.1–25.5 μg/kg), the levels of extractable organic fluorine (EOF: 4.9–17.4 mg/kg) and the low EOF/TF ratio (3.19–10.4%) indicated inorganic fluorides as the primary TF source. Critically, the migration of all target PFASs into food simulants (water, 4% acetic acid, 50% ethanol, 95% ethanol) under standardized use conditions was minimal (PFOA: 0.52–0.70 μg/kg; PFPeA: 0.54–0.63 μg/kg; others < LOQ). Even under aggressive simulated takeout scenarios (50 °C oscillation for 12 h + 12 h storage at 25 °C), PFOA migration reached only 0.99 ± 0.01 μg/kg in 95% ethanol. All migrated levels were substantially (>15-fold) below typical safety thresholds (e.g., 0.01 mg/kg). These findings demonstrate that, despite concerning residue levels in some products pointing to manufacturing contamination sources, migration during typical and even extended use scenarios poses negligible immediate consumer risk. This study underscores the need for stricter quality control targeting PFOA and inorganic fluoride inputs in sugarcane pulp tableware production. Full article

Clinically, it is a major driver of type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and cancer, reducing life expectancy by 5–20 years and imposing a staggering economic burden of USD 2 trillion annually (2.8% of global GDP). Despite its significant health and socioeconomic impact, earlier obesity medications, such as fenfluramine, sibutramine, and orlistat, fell short of expectations due to limited effectiveness, serious side effects including valvular heart disease and gastrointestinal issues, and high rates of treatment discontinuation. The advent of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (e.g., semaglutide, tirzepatide) has revolutionized obesity management. These agents demonstrate unprecedented efficacy, achieving 15–25% mean weight loss in clinical trials, alongside reducing major adverse cardiovascular events by 20% and T2D incidence by 72%. Emerging therapies, including oral GLP-1 agonists and triple-receptor agonists (e.g., retatrutide), promise enhanced tolerability and muscle preservation, potentially bridging the efficacy gap with bariatric surgery. However, challenges persist. High costs, supply shortages, and unequal access pose significant barriers to the widespread implementation of obesity treatment, particularly in low-resource settings. Gastrointestinal side effects and long-term safety concerns require close monitoring, while weight regain after medication discontinuation emphasizes the need for ongoing adherence and lifestyle support. This review highlights the transformative potential of incretin-based therapies while advocating for policy reforms to address cost barriers, equitable access, and preventive strategies. Future research must prioritize long-term cardiovascular outcome trials and mitigate emerging risks, such as sarcopenia and joint degeneration. A multidisciplinary approach combining pharmacotherapy, behavioral interventions, and systemic policy changes is critical to curbing the obesity epidemic and its downstream consequences. Full article

Long-Term Mechanical Response of Jinping Ultra-Deep Tunnels Considering Pore Pressure and Engineering Disturbances

As the world’s deepest hydraulic tunnels, the Jinping ultra-deep tunnels provide world-class conditions for research on deep rock mechanics under extreme conditions. This study analyzed the time-dependent behavior of different tunneling sections in the Jinping tunnels using the Nishihara creep model implemented in Abaqus. Validated numerical simulations of representative cross-sections at 1400 m and 2400 m depths in the diversion tunnel reveal that long-term creep deformations (over a 20-year period) substantially exceed instantaneous excavation-induced displacements. The stress concentrations and strain magnitudes exhibit significant depth dependence. The maximum principal stress at a 2400 m depth reaches 1.71 times that at 1400 m, while the vertical strain increases 1.46-fold. Based on this, the long-term mechanical behavior of the surrounding rock during the expansion of the Jinping auxiliary tunnel was further calculated and predicted. It was found that the stress concentration at the top and bottom of the left sidewall increases from 135 MPa to 203 MPa after expansion, identifying these as critical areas requiring focused monitoring and early warnings. The total deformation of the rock mass increases by approximately 5 mm after expansion, with the cumulative deformation reaching 14 mm. Post-expansion deformation converges within 180 days, with creep deformation of 2.5 mm–3.5 mm observed in both sidewalls, accounts for 51.0% of the total deformation during expansion. The surrounding rock reaches overall stability three years after the completion of expansion. These findings establish quantitative relationships between the excavation depth, time-dependent deformation, and stress redistribution and support the stability design, risk management, and infrastructure for ultra-deep tunnels in a stress state at a 2400 m depth. These insights are critical to ensuring the long-term stability of ultra-deep tunnels and operational safety assessments. Full article

Promoting domestic fire safety is crucial for preventing and effectively managing risky situations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of virtual environments (VEs) in fire drills to improve citizens’ knowledge and safe behavior in domestic settings. Conducted at the Citizen School for Risk Prevention (CSRP) in Zaragoza (Spain), the experiment involved 20 participants facing a simulated kitchen fire using a combination of physical and virtual extinguishing equipment. A theoretical session accompanied the drills to reinforce learning. Participants were divided into two groups: one completed the drill before and after the theoretical session, while the other completed it only afterward. Performance was assessed based on the ability to extinguish, control, or lose control of the fire. Surveys administered before, immediately after, and three months after training measured knowledge retention and behavioral changes. The results indicate a significant improvement in fire safety awareness and lasting adoption of safe practices. Participants also emerged as safety advocates. This study highlights the potential of combining theoretical instruction with immersive practical training and identifies strategies for replicating this approach in other prevention schools.
