Effect of Pre-Heating on Enhancing the Anti-Digestive and Antioxidant Properties of Curcumin Rice by Self-Emulsifying Technology

Self-emulsifying delivery systems (SEDSs) generate micro/nanoemulsions within the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing the bioavailability of hydrophobic phytochemicals. Turmeric rice is a staple across Asia, yet the mechanism of curcumin binding with rice remains unclear. This study utilized curcumin SEDS and pre-heating to produce curcumin instant rice (CIR). The CIR maintained its appearance and increased the levels of slowly digestible starch to 26.43–28.38% following steamer steaming (SST). In contrast, cooker water-boiling treatment (CWBT) enhanced resistant starch (16.73–38.24%), curcumin loading (3.77–61.39 mg/100 g), total phenolic content (23.09–193.79 mg GAE/100 g DW), and antioxidant activity. Following 50 min of CWBT, the gelatinization process disrupted the ordered structure of starch, facilitating the formation of amylose–lipid complexes. This process resulted in a maximum resistant starch content of 47.81% and a curcumin loading of 66.50 mg/100 g. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed an endothermic peak for type II crystals (105–130 °C), while X-ray diffraction exhibited V-type patterns, confirming the observed changes. Pre-heating enhanced the curcumin encapsulation and RS of CIR, thereby enhancing its bioavailability relative to conventional turmeric rice. Full article

Background/Objectives: Breast cancer (BC) has emerged as a significant threat among female malignancies, resulting in approximately 670,000 fatalities. The capacity to identify BC has advanced over the past two decades because of deep learning (DL), machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence. The early detection of BC is crucial; yet, conventional diagnostic techniques, including MRI, mammography, and biopsy, are costly, time-intensive, less sensitive, incorrect, and necessitate skilled physicians. This narrative review will examine six novel imaging approaches for BC diagnosis. Methods: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) surpasses existing approaches by providing non-invasive, high-resolution imaging. Raman Spectroscopy (RS) offers detailed chemical and structural insights into cancer tissue that traditional approaches cannot provide. Photoacoustic Imaging (PAI) provides superior optical contrast, exceptional ultrasonic resolution, and profound penetration and visualization capabilities. Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) acquires spatial and spectral data, facilitating non-invasive tissue classification with superior accuracy compared to grayscale imaging. Contrast-Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) utilizes contrast agents and dual energy to improve the visualization of blood vessels, enhance patient comfort, and surpass standard mammography in sensitivity. Multispectral Imaging (MSI) enhances tissue classification by employing many wavelength bands, resulting in high-dimensional images that surpass the ultrasound approach. The imaging techniques studied in this study are very useful for diagnosing tumors, staging them, and guiding surgery. They are not detrimental to morphological or immunohistochemical analysis, which is the gold standard for diagnosing breast cancer and determining molecular characteristics. Results: These imaging modalities provide enhanced sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy. Notwithstanding their considerable potential, the majority of these procedures are not employed in standard clinical practices. Conclusions: Validations, standardization, and large-scale clinical trials are essential for the real-time application of these approaches. The analyzed studies demonstrated that the novel modalities displayed enhanced diagnostic efficacy, with reported sensitivities and specificities often exceeding those of traditional imaging methods. The results indicate that they may assist in early detection and surgical decision-making; however, for widespread adoption, they must be standardized, cost-reduced, and subjected to extensive clinical trials. This study offers a concise summary of each methodology, encompassing the methods and findings, while also addressing the many limits encountered in the imaging techniques and proposing solutions to mitigate these issues for future applications. Background/Objectives: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have transformed the prevention of thromboembolic events, but their efficacy and safety remain highly variable across individuals. DD217, a novel oral direct factor Xa inhibitor, has demonstrated potent anticoagulant activity in preclinical and clinical studies. No pharmacogenetic data are currently available for this compound. Based on in silico predictions of metabolic pathways and transporter involvement, and evidence from other DOACs, we hypothesized that variants in CYP2C and P-glycoprotein genes may contribute to variability in pharmacokinetics (PK) and clinical outcomes. Methods: Fifty-two patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were enrolled, of whom 34 received the investigational drug (40 mg/day, n = 16; 60 mg/day, n = 18). DNA was extracted from peripheral blood cells, and genotyping of CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2C8, CYP3A4, CYP3A5, and ABCB1 was performed by real-time PCR. Pharmacokinetics (PK) parameters (Tmax, AUClast, Cmax) were assessed. In silico docking and pathway modeling predicted CYP2C and P-glycoprotein (ABCB1) involvement in drug disposition. Associations of genetic variants with PK parameters and adverse events (thrombosis, bleeding) were analyzed. Results: Carriers of reduced-function CYP2C9 alleles (intermediate [IM] or poor metabolizers [PM]) in the 60 mg group had a significantly shorter Tmax compared with normal metabolizers (p = 0.005227), with trends toward higher AUClast (p = 0.06926) and Cmax (p = 0.1259). No significant associations were observed for CYP2C19, CYP3A4/5, or CYP2C8. In contrast, ABCB1 polymorphisms were associated with systemic exposure: carriers of the C allele at rs1045642 had higher AUClast and Cmax compared to TT (wild-type) homozygotes, while rs2032582 T allele carriers showed lower exposure (p < 0.05). At the haplotype level, the C–G–C–T combination of ABCB1 was more frequent in patients with thrombotic events at the 40 mg dose (p = 0.038). Overall, 5 thrombosis events and 1 bleedings were recorded on DD217, with no consistent associations to single SNPs. Conclusions: This first pharmacogenetic evaluation of DD217 shows that CYP2C9 variants are associated with differences in early-phase pharmacokinetics (Tmax), while ABCB1 polymorphisms appear to modulate systemic exposure (AUClast, Cmax) and may influence thrombotic risk. These observations are consistent with in silico predictions of metabolic and transporter pathways. Despite limitations in sample size and event frequency, the study highlights the feasibility and importance of early pharmacogenetic evaluation during the drug development cycle of novel DOACs. It is essential to introduce new cultivars to diversify the pomelo industry in China. This paper compared the agronomic and environmental performances of new Tabtim Siam (TS) and Xishi (XS) pomelos with the local cultivars (Red-fleshed Sweet (RS) and Shatian (ST)) in Dabu County. We have generally evaluated the phenological, physiological, fruit quality, stress resistance, and storage characteristics. Findings indicated that TS and XS grew up well, and the phenological stages were adjusted to the local conditions. They had a high pollen viability and equivalent photosynthetic capacity. XS and TS had the highest yield and good fruit quality in terms of higher edible rates, more juice rate, and balanced sugar–acid content. Both the introduced cultivars had greater cold resistance compared with the control with lower semi-lethal temperatures. Polyethylene film at low temperatures to preserve the quality of storage was effective. Compared with RS and ST, TS and XS had a higher price in the market economically. The use of molecular markers (SCoT and SRAP) was able to discriminate all cultivars, which proved genetic uniqueness. In summary, TS and XS have potential to be grown in the Meizhou area and provide high quality, good adaptability, and greater market potential. Full article

Voice analysis and classification for biomedical diagnosis purpose is receiving a growing attention to assist physicians in the decision-making process in clinical milieu. In this study, we develop and test deep feedforward neural networks (DFFNN) to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy newborns. The DFFNN are trained with acoustic features measured from newborn cries, including auditory-inspired amplitude modulation (AAM), Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), and prosody. The configuration of the DFFNN is optimized by using Bayesian optimization (BO) and random search (RS) algorithm. Under both optimization techniques, the experimental results show that the DFFNN yielded to the highest classification rate when trained with all acoustic features. Specifically, the DFFNN-BO and DFFNN-RS achieved 87.80% ± 0.23 and 86.12% ± 0.33 accuracy, respectively, under ten-fold cross-validation protocol. Both DFFNN-BO and DFFNN-RS outperformed existing approaches tested on the same database. Full article

Neonicotinoid pesticides, including imidacloprid (IMI), are widely used in agriculture and as household insecticides. IMI displays strong affinity for insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs); however, neonicotinoids still partially bind to mammalian nAChRs. Relatively little is known about how neonicotinoid exposure alters learning, memory or mood, even though nAChRs play a role in these mechanisms. We tested the hypothesis that developmental exposure to IMI impairs performance on memory tasks, and anxiety- and depressive-like behavior. We orally dosed pregnant CD-1 mice from gestation day 10 to birth with vehicle or IMI at 0.5 mg/kg/day or 5.7 mg/kg/day. When exposed animals were adults, we examined cognitive and emotional behaviors and we examined the effect of IMI on α7 and α4 nAChR subunit mRNA expression using qPCR. For both sexes, IMI exposure was associated with impaired striatal-dependent procedural learning task and hippocampal-dependent spatial learning but had no effect on hippocampal-dependent working memory. Males, but not females, displayed increased anxiety-like behavior, with low dose subjects displaying more pronounced effects, suggesting a non-linear dose response. In males, we found lower α7 subunit mRNA expression in the hippocampus and amygdala and lower α4 mRNA expression in the striatum compared to controls. Thus, exposure to IMI during a critical period is associated with disruptions to cognitive and anxiety-like behaviors. Additionally, in males, IMI exposure is associated with reduced expression of nAChR subunits in relevant brain regions. Full article

Metabolic diseases such as obesity and related conditions have an inflammatory basis. Genetic and nutritional factors can influence the development of these diseases by altering the inflammatory state. This study aimed to analyse how the rs659366 (G/A) polymorphism in the UCP2 gene interacts with dietary capsaicin (CAP) consumption and affects inflammatory markers in Mexican adults. A cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted in 212 adult patients. The UCP2 rs659366 polymorphism was genotyped using an allelic discrimination assay. Dietary CAP intake was measured with a validated food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression analyses were performed for interaction analyses. The ancestral allele G accounted for 40.2% and the risk allele A accounted for 59.8% of samples. There was a significant interaction between CAP intake and the UCP2 rs659366 polymorphism for the inflammatory marker NLR (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) (p < 0.05). Among subjects with the G allele, higher CAP intake was associated with higher NLR scores (p < 0.001). Patients with the G allele of the UCP2 rs659366 polymorphism experienced increased inflammation with higher CAP intake. This finding highlights the need for future studies in personalised nutrition and could expand knowledge about the effects of CAP on obesity and inflammation. Full article

The intensification of agricultural land use (A-LUI) is a central driver of global environmental change, affecting soil health, water quality, biodiversity, and greenhouse gas balances. Monitoring A-LUI remains challenging because it is shaped by multiple management practices, ecological processes, and spatio-temporal dynamics. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of existing definitions and standards of A-LUI at national and international levels (FAO, OECD, World Bank, EUROSTAT) and evaluates in situ methods alongside the rapidly expanding potential of remote sensing (RS). We introduce a novel RS-based taxonomy of A-LUI indicators, structured into five complementary categories: trait, genesis, structural, taxonomic, and functional indicators. Numerous examples illustrate how traits and management practices can be translated into RS proxies and linked to intensity signals, while highlighting key challenges such as sensor limitations, cultivar variability, and confounding environmental factors. We further propose an integrative framework that connects management practices, plant and soil traits, RS observables, validation needs, and policy relevance. Emerging technologies—such as hyperspectral imaging, solar-induced fluorescence, radar, artificial intelligence, and semantic data integration—are discussed as promising pathways to advance the monitoring of A-LUI across scales. By compiling and structuring RS-derived indicators, this review establishes a conceptual and methodological foundation for transparent, standardised, and globally comparable assessments of agricultural land use intensity, thereby supporting both scientific progress and evidence-based agricultural policy. We developed and validated a capillary electrophoresis (CE) method for the separation of two opioid–neurotensin hybrid peptides, recently presented as potent analgesics being decapeptides with a hybridic nature (i.e., H-Dmt-D-Lys-Phe-Phe-Lys-Lys-Pro-Phe-Tle-Leu-OH; PK20 and its structural analogue H-Dmt-D-Lys-Phe-Phe-Lys-Lys-Pro-Phe-Ile-Leu-OH; [Ile9]PK20). As these two chimeras differ by only one amino acid, Tle→Ile, and are characterized by possessing the same molecular weight while having different spatial conformations, the aim of the study was to determine their potential separation in terms of the presence of any differences resulting from this structural modification. The separation process was performed using an eCAP fused silica capillary at a detection wavelength of 200 nm in 25 mM phosphate buffer at pH 2.5. The analysis was performed at 25 °C and 10 kV. The developed method was validated by assessing linearity in the concentration range from 50 to 5000 ng/mL. Very good linearity was obtained, with the coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.9991 to 0.9999 for both analyzed derivatives. The method demonstrated baseline resolution (Rs = 1.4). The limit of quantification ranged from 34.72 ng/mL to 34.98 ng/mL. The recoveries of all derivatives ranged from 94.8% to 100%. The total analysis time was only 6 min. The developed method enables the determination of PK20 and [Ile9]PK20 derivatives both in aqueous solutions and in serum. Full article

As an important bioactive signaling molecule, nitric oxide (NO) participates in the responses of plants to various environmental stresses. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of exogenous NO on the growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) during early growth. The results showed that Cd significantly inhibited alfalfa seedling growth and induced membrane lipid peroxidation. Addition of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, as an NO donor) significantly promoted seedling growth and induced the mobilization of seed photosynthate reserves, leading to an increase in total soluble sugar (SS) and reducing sugar (RS) contents. Application of SNP mitigated membrane peroxidation damage caused by Cd stress by enhancing catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities in order to eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby improving Cd resistance and increasing Cd accumulation in alfalfa. This promoting effect of SNP depended on its concentration; the most optimal SNP concentration to promote the growth and Cd absorption of alfalfa under Cd stress was found to be 200 µM. The fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW) and Cd accumulation of seedlings treated with 200 µM SNP increased significantly by 23.10%, 30.32% and 82.50%, respectively, on the fifth day, compared with the Cd-only treatment. Background: Respiratory viral infections such as COVID-19 and influenza represent significant public health threats, especially in vulnerable populations. Vitamin D has been promoted as an immunomodulatory agent, with previous studies suggesting an association between vitamin D levels and disease severity in respiratory infections. Additionally, genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) may influence immune responses. Methods: This study investigates the relationship between vitamin D levels, VDR polymorphisms (rs1544410, rs731236, and rs7975232), and clinical severity in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and influenza during the 2023–2024 winter season. Results: A total of 71 patients were included in this cross-sectional study. Vitamin D levels were significantly lower in severe COVID-19 cases (8.08 ng/mL, IQR: 4.79–15.7) compared to moderate forms (32.6 ng/mL, IQR: 13.0–38.6), as well as severe influenza cases (25.6 ng/mL, IQR: 18.9–34.5). Additionally, severe COVID-19 patients exhibited higher inflammatory markers (CRP, neutrophil count) and lower lymphocyte counts. However, no significant association was found between VDR polymorphisms and disease severity or vitamin D levels. Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential role of vitamin D in modulating disease severity in respiratory viral infections, while the influence of genetic polymorphisms remains uncertain. Further research is needed to determine whether vitamin D supplementation could improve clinical outcomes in these infections. Full article

Objectives. Identity disturbance and instability in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are associated with impairments in the integration of emotional autobiographical memory (EAM). At the neurophysiological level, it has been suggested that EAM dysfunction may be linked with functional connectivity (FC) alterations of the salience network (SN). Despite this, evidence in adolescents with BPD remains scarce, especially under task-related conditions. Therefore, we investigated SN electroencephalography (EEG) FC in adolescents with BPD during the resting-state condition (RS) and during two EAM tasks (i.e., happiness- and fear-related). Methods. A total of 24 female adolescents with BPD and 15 healthy controls underwent RS and task-related EEG recording. All participants were also assessed for BPD and related clinical dimensions. EEG FC analyses in the SN were performed using exact Low-Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (eLORETA) software. Results. Compared to controls, BPD patients exhibited reduced theta SN connectivity during RS. This hypo-connectivity pattern was positively correlated with all BPD-related dimensions (i.e., emotional dysregulation, impulsiveness, dissociative symptoms, and childhood trauma). Furthermore, compared to the RS, during the listening of fear-related memories, BPD patients showed an increase in delta SN connectivity. This hyper-connectivity pattern was negatively correlated with the self-reported vividness of recall. Conclusions. While decreased SN theta connectivity may be a common neural marker of traumatic disintegration, increased SN delta connectivity may indicate a neural correlate of suppression/avoidance of negative memories. Towards Personalized Chemotherapy in Gastrointestinal Cancers: Prospective Analysis of Pharmacogenetic Variants in a Russian Cohort

Background/Objectives: Pharmacogenetic variability plays a crucial role in determining both the efficacy and toxicity of chemotherapy for gastrointestinal cancers. However, data on allele frequencies and their clinical relevance in Russian populations remain scarce. Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study of 412 patients with gastrointestinal malignancies between 2020 and 2023. Pharmacogenetic testing was performed prior to the initiation of chemotherapy using real-time allele-specific PCR and microarray hybridization technology. Polymorphisms in the DPYD, UGT1A1, CYP2C8, CYP3A5, GSTP1, ERCC1, XPC, CDA, MTHFR, TYMS, and SLC31A1 genes were analyzed. Results: The frequency of most variants was consistent with those reported in European populations, reflecting the ethnic proximity of the studied cohort. Several clinically relevant variants were identified: DPYD rs2297595 occurred more frequently than in European cohorts, and UGT1A1 rs8175347 was observed at a higher prevalence, underscoring the potential risk of irinotecan-related neutropenia and diarrhea. CYP2C8 rs10509681 was present at frequencies comparable to European populations and is associated with an increased risk of taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy. Other markers (GSTP1, ERCC1, CDA, SLC31A1, MTHFR, TYMS) demonstrated variable associations with chemotherapy efficacy and toxicity, consistent with findings from previous international studies. Conclusions: This study provides the first comprehensive description of pharmacogenetic polymorphisms in a Russian cohort of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Our findings confirm the clinical importance of DPYD and UGT1A1 testing and highlight additional variants of potential interest. Full article

Background: Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a major complication of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Objectives: To investigate the factors as sociated with HT in patients with successful recanalization and examine the impact of collateral status (CS) on ischemic progression and outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with AIS with successful recanalization (modified treatment in cerebral infarction (mTICI) 2B-3) who underwent dual-energy CT (DECT) within 24 h and MRI within 10 days post-EVT. Patients with posterior circulation stroke, missing multiphase CT angiography (CTA) collateral scores, or missing 3-month modified ranking scale scores were excluded from the study. Results: Among the 86 patients, those with HT had a significantly lower proportion of 3-month excellent outcomes and worse imaging scores, including non-contrast CT (NCCT)-Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS), virtual non-contrast (VNC)-ASPECTS, and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-ASPECTS. Patients with HT with poor CS had a significantly lower proportion of 3-month excellent outcomes, poorer post-EVT National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, worse imaging scores, including VNC-ASPECTS, and DWI-ASPECTS. In the predictive factor analysis, post-EVT NIHSS and VNC-ASPECTS scores were significantly associated with 3-month excellent functional outcomes (modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 0-1). Conclusions: In patients with successfully recanalized AIS, HT with poor CS was associated with poorer functional outcomes and worse imaging scores, and a 24 h combined measure (post-EVT NIHSS and DECT VNC-ASPECT) show promise for early risk stratification; prospective external validation is warranted before routine use. Remote sensing foundation models (RSFMs) have demonstrated excellent feature extraction and reasoning capabilities under the self-supervised learning paradigm of “unlabeled datasets—model pre-training—downstream tasks”. These models achieve superior accuracy and performance compared to existing models across numerous open benchmark datasets. However, when confronted with multimodal data, such as optical, LiDAR, SAR, text, video, and audio, the RSFMs exhibit limitations in cross-modal generalization and multi-task learning. Although several reviews have addressed the RSFMs, there is currently no comprehensive survey dedicated to vision–X (vision, language, audio, position) multimodal RSFMs (MM-RSFMs). To tackle this gap, this article provides a systematic review of MM-RSFMs from a novel perspective. Firstly, the key technologies underlying MM-RSFMs are reviewed and analyzed, and the available multimodal RS pre-training datasets are summarized. Then, recent advances in MM-RSFMs are classified according to the development of backbone networks and cross-modal interaction methods of vision–X, such as vision–vision, vision–language, vision–audio, vision–position, and vision–language–audio. Finally, potential challenges are analyzed, and perspectives for MM-RSFMs are outlined. This survey from this paper reveals that current MM-RSFMs face the following key challenges: (1) a scarcity of high-quality multimodal datasets, (2) limited capability for multimodal feature extraction, (3) weak cross-task generalization, (4) absence of unified evaluation criteria, and (5) insufficient security measures.
