According to the latest Verizon DBIR report, credential abuse, including password reuse and human factors in password creation, remains the leading attack vector. It was revealed that most users change their passwords only when they forget them, and 35% of respondents find mandatory password rotation policies inconvenient. These findings highlight the importance of combining technical solutions with user-focused education to strengthen password security. In this research, the “human factor in the creation of usernames and passwords” is considered a vulnerability, as identifying the patterns or rules used by users in password generation can significantly reduce the number of possible combinations that attackers need to try in order to gain access to personal data. The proposed method based on an LSTM model operates at a character level, detecting recurrent structures and generating generalized masks that reflect the most common components in password creation. Open datasets of 31,000 compromised passwords from real-world leaks were used to train the model and it achieved over 90% test accuracy without signs of overfitting. A new method of evaluating the individual password creation habits of users and automatically fetching context-rich keywords from a user’s public web and social media footprint via a keyword-extraction algorithm is developed, and this approach is incorporated into a web application that allows clients to locally fine-tune an LSTM model locally, run it through ONNX, and carry out all inference on-device, ensuring complete data confidentiality and adherence to privacy regulations. Patient blood management (PBM) is a multidisciplinary approach aimed at improving patient outcomes through targeted anemia treatment that minimizes allogeneic blood transfusions, employs blood conservation techniques, and avoids inappropriate use of blood product transfusions. Viscoelastic testing (VET) techniques, such as thromboelastography (TEG) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), have led to significant advancements in PBM. These techniques offer real-time whole-blood assessment of hemostatic function. This provides the clinician with a more complete hemostasis perspective compared to that provided by conventional coagulation tests (CCTs), such as the prothrombin time (PT) and the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), which only assess plasma-based coagulation. VET does this by mapping the complex processes of clot formation, stability, and breakdown (i.e., fibrinolysis). As a result of real-time whole-blood coagulation assessment during hemorrhage, hemostasis can be achieved through targeted transfusion therapy. This approach helps fulfill an objective of PBM by helping to reduce unnecessary transfusions. However, challenges remain that limit broader adoption of VET, particularly in hospital settings. Of these, standardization and the high cost of the devices are those that are faced the most. This discussion highlights the potential of VET application in PBM to guide blood-clotting therapies and improve outcomes in patients with coagulopathies from various causes that result in hemorrhage. Another aim of this discussion is to highlight the limitations of implementing these technologies so that appropriate measures can be taken toward their wider integration into clinical use. The dynamics of the vibrational mode of motion of the driving member of a nonideal system, a mixing–whipping device based on a simple slide-crank mechanism, was studied. The highly nonlinear differential equations of motion were solved numerically by the Runge–Kutta method. The interaction of the mixing–whipping device with the nonideal excitation source causes the rotational speed of the engine shaft and the rotation angle of the driving member to fluctuate, accomplishing a damped process. The parameters of the device and the nonideal energy source have an effect on the kinematic, vibrational and energy characteristics of the system. An increase in the engine’s torque, crank length, number and radius of piston holes, and piston mass, as well as a decrease in the fluid’s density, leads to a reduction in the oscillation range of the crank angle, amplitude and period of angular velocity oscillations of the engine shaft and the mixing–whipping force power. The effects of a nonideal energy source may be used in designing a mixing–whipping device based on a slider-crank mechanism to select effective system parameters and an energy-saving motor in accordance with the requirements of technological processes and products. Hydrodynamic cavitation is one of the most promising technologies for sustainable process intensification in the food, nutraceutical, and environmental sectors, due to its ability to generate highly localized and intense implosions. Venturi-type devices, known for their simplicity and efficiency, are widely used for non-thermal extraction, microbial inactivation, and cellular disruption. However, the effectiveness of cavitation critically depends on internal geometry—particularly the perimeter-to-area ratio (P/A), which influences both pressure gradient distribution and the density of nucleation sites. In this context, an innovative configuration based on the Reuleaux triangle is proposed, allowing for a significant increase in the P/A ratio compared to conventional circular-section devices. This theoretical study extends the Navier–Stokes and Rayleigh–Plesset models to describe bubble dynamics and assess the influence of geometric and rotational variants (VRAt) on the localization and intensity of cavitation collapse. The results suggest that optimized internal geometries can reduce treatment times, increase selectivity, and improve the overall energy efficiency of cavitation processes, offering strong potential for advanced and sustainable industrial applications. This work is entirely theoretical and is intended to support the future design and experimental validation of next-generation cavitating devices. Full article

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of AMCOP® elastodontic appliances on cephalometric parameters of skeletal divergence and upper airway dimensions in growing patients, comparing treated individuals with an untreated control group. Methods: A total of 60 subjects (30 treated with AMCOP® devices and 30 controls) were selected, with mean ages of 8.67 ± 1.3 and 9.19 ± 0.8 years, respectively. The AMCOP® appliances, designed for mixed dentition, were worn for 1 h during the day and throughout the night for 6–8 months. Cephalometric analyses were conducted at the beginning (T0) and end (T1) of treatment. Statistical analyses were performed using multivariable linear regression models to assess changes in skeletal and airway parameters, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Significant reductions were observed in Ans-Snp^Go-Gn (p = 0.0351), SN^Go-Gn (p = 0.0091), and FMA (p < 0.001) in the treated group compared to controls, indicating improved mandibular rotation. Upper airway spaces (SPAS, MAS, IAS) increased significantly, suggesting enhanced airway patency. Regression models confirmed the positive impact of AMCOP® therapy on skeletal and airway outcomes, particularly in subjects with pronounced vertical discrepancies. Conclusions: AMCOP® elastodontic devices effectively promote anterior mandibular rotation and reduce mandibular plane inclination in hyperdivergent patients, contributing to balanced craniofacial growth. The expansion of pharyngeal spaces indicates potential respiratory benefits. Future research is needed to confirm long-term stability and address variability in treatment response. Full article

We present a theoretical study of various designs for arbitrary polarization retarders, created using sequences of half-wave and quarter-wave plates arranged at specific rotation angles. When combined with arbitrary polarization rotators, these retarders form a flexible device capable of implementing transformations between any pair of polarization states. Some configurations discussed are known from existing literature, while others appear to be new and, to the best of our knowledge, have not been reported before. The devices allow for continuous tuning of both retardance and rotation by adjusting the relative angles between the wave plates in the sequence. Full article

Camellia oleifera is one of the four largest woody oil species in the world, with more than 5 million hectares planted in China alone. Reducing bud damage and improving harvesting net rate and efficiency have become the key challenges to mechanized harvesting of Camellia oleifera fruits. This paper presents a novel comb-spiral impact harvesting device primarily composed of four parts, which are lifting mechanism, picking mechanism, rotating mechanism, and tracked chassis. The workspace of the four-degree-of-freedom lifting mechanism was simulated, and the harvesting reachable area was maximized using MATLAB R2021a software. The picking mechanism, which includes dozens of spirally arranged impact pillars, achieves high harvesting efficiency through impacting, brushing, and dragging, while maintaining a low bud shedding rate. The rotary mechanism provides effective harvesting actions, and the tracked chassis guarantees free movement of the equipment. Simulation experiments and field validation experiments indicate that optimal performance can be achieved when the brushing speed is set to 21.45 r/min, the picking finger speed is set to 341.27 r/min, and the picking device tilt angle is set to 1.0°. With these parameters, the harvesting quantity of Camellia oleifera fruits is 119.75 kg/h, fruit shedding rate 92.30%, and bud shedding rate as low as 9.16%. This new model for fruit shedding and the comb-spiral impact harvesting principle shows promise as a mechanized harvesting solution for nut-like fruits. Full article

Modern electronic devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, and robots typically integrate three-dimensional sensors to track the device’s movement in the 3D space. However, sensor measurements in three-dimensional vectors are highly sensitive to device orientation since a slight change in the device’s tilt or heading can change the vector values. To avoid complications, applications using these sensors often use only the magnitude of the vector, as in geomagnetic-based indoor positioning, or assume fixed device holding postures such as holding a smartphone in portrait mode only. However, using only the magnitude of the vector loses the directional information, while ad hoc posture assumptions work under controlled laboratory conditions but often fail in real-world scenarios. To resolve these problems, we propose a universal vector calibration algorithm that enables consistent three-dimensional vector measurements for the same physical activity, regardless of device orientation. The algorithm works in two stages. First, it transforms vector values in local coordinates to those in global coordinates by calibrating device tilting using pitch and roll angles computed from the initial vector values. Second, it additionally transforms vector values from the global coordinate to a reference coordinate when the target coordinate is different from the global coordinate by correcting yaw rotation to align with application-specific reference coordinate systems. We evaluated our algorithm on geomagnetic field-based indoor positioning and bidirectional step detection. For indoor positioning, our vector calibration achieved an 83.6% reduction in mismatches between sampled magnetic vectors and magnetic field map vectors and reduced the LSTM-based positioning error from 31.14 m to 0.66 m. For bidirectional step detection, the proposed algorithm with vector calibration improved step detection accuracy from 67.63% to 99.25% and forward/backward classification from 65.54% to 100% across various device orientations. High-pitched noise generated by dental air turbine handpieces (ATHs) causes discomfort and anxiety, discouraging dental visits. Understanding the time-dependent noise generation mechanism associated with compressed airflow in ATHs is crucial for effective noise reduction. However, the direct investigation of airflow dynamics within ATHs is challenging. The transient-state modeling of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations remains unexplored owing to the complexities of high rotational speeds and air compressibility. This study develops a novel CFD framework for transient (time-dependent) modeling under high-speed rotational conditions. Simulations were performed using a three-dimensional model reconstructed from a commercial ATH. Simulations were conducted at 320,000 rpm using a novel framework that combines the immersed boundary and building cube methods. A fine 0.025 mm mesh spacing near the ATH, combined with supercomputing resources, enabled the simulation of hundreds of millions of cells. The simulation results were validated using experimental noise measurements. The CFD simulation revealed transient airflow and aeroacoustic behavior inside and around the ATH that closely matched the prominent frequency peaks from the experimental data. This study is the first to simulate the transient airflow of ATHs. The proposed CFD model can accurately predict aeroacoustics, contributing to the future development of quieter and more efficient dental devices. Full article

The scope of this paper is the development of a cost-effective wireless torque measurement system for vehicle drivetrain shafts. The prototype integrates strain gauges, an HX711 conditioner, a Wemos D1 Mini ESP8266, and a rechargeable battery directly on the rotating shaft, forming a self-contained sensor node. Calibration against a certified dynamometric wrench confirmed an operating span of ±5–50 N·m. Within this range, the device achieved a mean absolute error of 0.559 N·m. It also maintained precision better than ±2.5 N·m at 95% confidence, while real-time data were transmitted via Wi-Fi. The total component cost is below EUR 30 based on current prices. The novelty of this proof-of-concept implementation demonstrates that reliable, IoT-enabled torque sensing can be realized with low-cost, readily available parts. The paper details assembly, calibration, and deployment procedures, providing a transparent pathway for replication. By aligning with Industry 4.0 requirements for smart, connected equipment, the proposed torque measurement system offers an affordable solution for process monitoring and predictive maintenance in automotive and industrial settings. This study analyses the application of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process on polymeric materials manufactured by additive manufacturing (AM), specifically with polylactic acid (PLA). FSW is a solid-state welding process characterized by its low heat input and minimal distortion, which makes it ideal for the assembly of complex or large components made by additive manufacturing. To evaluate its effectiveness, a portable FSW device was developed for the purpose of joining PLA specimens made by AM using different filler densities (15% and 100%). Two tool geometries (a cylindrical and truncated cone) were utilized by varying the parameters of rotational speed, tilt angle, and feed rate. The results revealed two different process stages, transient and steady-state, and showed differences in weld quality depending on the material density, tool type, and material addition. The study confirms the viability of FSW for joining PLA parts made by AM and suggests potential applications in industries that require robust and precise joints in plastic parts, thereby helping hybrid manufacturing to progress. Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) has emerged as a versatile and powerful nanofabrication technique for developing next-generation gas sensors by enabling precise control over nanostructure geometry, porosity, and material composition. Through dynamic substrate tilting and rotation, GLAD facilitates the fabrication of highly porous, anisotropic nanostructures, such as aligned, tilted, zigzag, helical, and multilayered nanorods, with tunable surface area and diffusion pathways optimized for gas detection. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent advances in GLAD-based gas sensor design, focusing on how structural engineering and material integration converge to enhance sensor performance. Key materials strategies include the construction of heterojunctions and core–shell architectures, controlled doping, and nanoparticle decoration using noble metals or metal oxides to amplify charge transfer, catalytic activity, and redox responsiveness. GLAD-fabricated nanostructures have been effectively deployed across multiple gas sensing modalities, including resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and optical platforms, where their high aspect ratios, tailored porosity, and defect-rich surfaces facilitate enhanced gas adsorption kinetics and efficient signal transduction. These devices exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity toward a range of analytes, including NO2, CO, H2S, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with detection limits often reaching the parts-per-billion level. Emerging innovations, such as photo-assisted sensing and integration with artificial intelligence for data analysis and pattern recognition, further extend the capabilities of GLAD-based systems for multifunctional, real-time, and adaptive sensing. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are discussed, emphasizing the promise of GLAD as a scalable platform for next-generation gas sensing technologies. Full article

Using personal smart devices such as mobile phones to perform precise distal pointing in intelligent cockpits is a developing trend. The present study investigated the effects of different control display gains (CD gains) and wrist movement modalities on performance and comfort for precise distal pointing interaction. Twenty healthy participants performed a precise distant pointing task with four constant CD gains (0.6, 0.8, 0.84, and 1.0), two dynamic CD gains, and two wrist movement modalities (wrist extension and rotation) by using a mobile phone as the input device. Physiological electromyographic data, task performance, and subjective questionnaire data were collected. Comparative results show that constant CD gain is superior to dynamic CD gain and that 0.8 to 1.0 is the optimum range of values. The data showed a clear and consistent trend in performance and comfort as the CD gain increased from 0.6 to 1.0, with performance and comfort becoming progressively better, reaching an optimum at 0.84. In terms of the wrist control method, the rotation mode had smaller task completion time than the extension mode. The results of this study provide a basis for the design of remote interaction using mobile phones in an intelligent cockpit. Full article

The efficient and reliable maintenance and repair of industrial machinery depend critically on circuit diagrams, which serve as essential references for troubleshooting and must be updated when machinery is modified. However, many circuit diagrams are not available in structured, machine-readable format; instead, they often exist as unstructured PDF files, rendered images, or even photographs. Existing digitization methods often address isolated tasks, such as symbol detection, but fail to provide a comprehensive solution. This paper presents a novel pipeline for extracting the underlying graph structures of circuit diagrams, integrating image preprocessing, pattern matching, and graph extraction. A U-net model is employed for noise removal, followed by gray-box pattern matching for device classification, line detection by morphological operations, and a final graph extraction step to reconstruct circuit connectivity. A detailed error analysis highlights the strengths and limitations of each pipeline component. On a skewed test diagram from a scan with slight rotation, the proposed pipeline achieved a device detection accuracy of 88.46% with no false positives and a line detection accuracy of 94.7%. Comparative Analysis of Mechanical Variables in Different Exercises Performed with a Rotational Inertial Device in Professional Soccer Players: A Pilot Study

Background: Soccer performance is largely dependent on high-intensity, unilateral actions such as sprints, jumps, and changes of direction. These demands can lead to strength and power differences between limbs, highlighting the importance of individualised assessment in professional players. Rotational inertial devices offer a valuable method to evaluate and train these mechanical variables separately for each leg. The aim of this study was twofold: (a) to characterise the mechanical variables derived from several lower-body strength exercises performed on rotational inertial devices, all targeting the same muscle group; and (b) to compare the mechanical variables between the dominant and non-dominant leg for each exercise. Methods: Twenty-six male professional soccer players (age = 26.3 ± 5.1 years; height = 182.3 ± 0.6 cm; weight = 75.9 ± 5.9 kg; body mass index = 22.8 ± 1.1 kg/m2; fat mass percentage = 9.1 ± 0.6%; fat-free mass = 68.8 ± 5.3 kg), all belonging to the same professional Belgian team, voluntarily participated in this study. The players completed a single assessment session consisting of six unilateral exercises (i.e., quadriceps hip, hamstring knee, adductor, quadriceps knee, hamstring hip, and abductor). For each exercise, they performed two sets of eight repetitions with each leg (i.e., dominant and non-dominant) in a randomised order. Results: The quadriceps hip exercise resulted in higher mechanical values compared to the quadriceps knee exercise in both limbs (p < 0.004). Similarly, the hamstring hip exercise produced greater values across all variables and limbs (p < 0.004), except for peak force, where the hamstring knee exercise exhibited higher values (p < 0.004). The adductor exercise showed higher peak force values for the dominant limb (p < 0.004). The between-limb comparison revealed differences only in the abductor exercise (p < 0.004). Conclusions: These findings suggest the necessity of prioritising movement selection based on targeted outcomes, although it should be considered that the differences between limb differences are very limited.
