Crumb rubber-modified asphalt concrete (CMAC) has gained increasing attention as a sustainable pavement material capable of improving mechanical performance while utilizing waste tire resources. This study investigates the rutting resistance and fatigue behavior of CMAC using a combined experimental and mechanistic–empirical modeling approach. Asphalt mixtures containing 0–25% crumb rubber by binder weight were prepared and evaluated through Marshall stability and indirect tensile fatigue tests, whereas Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to examine binder–rubber interactions. The results indicate that crumb rubber significantly influences both the volumetric and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures. Mixtures containing 10–15% crumb rubber exhibited optimal performances, achieving up to 36% higher Marshall stability and improved fatigue life compared with conventional asphalt mixtures. FTIR analysis revealed that rubber particle swelling and limited chemical interactions enhanced binder elasticity and improved binder–aggregate compatibility. However, excessive rubber content (≥20%) resulted in reduced stability owing to increased binder absorption and decreased effective binder film thickness. A mechanistic–empirical model incorporating viscoelastic, viscoplastic, and fatigue damage parameters successfully reproduced the experimental trends and identified the same optimal rubber content range. The findings demonstrate that CMAC with a moderate rubber content can enhance pavement durability and structural performance while promoting environmentally sustainable road construction through the reuse of waste tires. This study investigates the synergistic use of Fischer–Tropsch wax (FTW) and recycled rubber powder (RP) as dual modifiers in stone mastic asphalt (SMA11) to improve its mechanical and functional performance. Rheological analysis demonstrated that an FTW content of 4% achieves the optimal balance of high-temperature rutting resistance, aging resistance, and workability, with a binder viscosity of 1.6 Pa·s at 135 °C. When incorporated into SMA11 mixtures at 15%, RP yielded the best overall mechanical performance, including a reduction in rut depth to 1.22 mm and a 25% decrease in wheel tracking slope (WTS). The 15% RP mixtures also exhibited superior long-term skid resistance (μm = 0.329 after 180,000 polishing cycles, corresponding to a 13% reduction in braking distance) and enhanced thermal cracking resistance (failure temperature improved by 8.0 °C to −32.7 °C). An RP content of 5% maximized moisture resistance (ITSR = 100%), while 10% RP produced the highest mid-frequency sound absorption coefficient (α = 0.050). The hybrid modification system enables a 20 °C reduction in production temperature, consistent with published data on wax-based warm-mix technologies, and is associated with reduced energy consumption and lower emissions. The approach simultaneously supports sustainable pavement design through the high-value reuse of waste tire rubber. Full article

The rapid growth of urban infrastructure and vehicle ownership has dramatically increased concrete consumption and waste tire generation, posing significant environmental challenges. This study investigates the feasibility of using waste tire steel fibers (WTSF) recovered from end-of-life tires as reinforcement in concrete to enhance mechanical performance while promoting sustainable construction. A reference concrete mix targeting 35 MPa compressive strength was modified with WTSF at 1%, 2%, 3%, and 5% by cement weight. Workability and compressive strength were evaluated through slump tests and cube testing at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Results show that fiber incorporation had minimal impact on workability (slump 10–10.5 cm) and significantly improved compressive strength across all curing ages. The 3% fiber mix achieved the highest 28-day strength of 55.94 MPa, a 20.1% increase over reference concrete, while the 5% mix offered superior early-age strength but showed reduced long-term gains due to fiber clustering. These findings highlight an optimal fiber content balancing strength enhancement, uniform fiber distribution, and workability. Reusing tire-derived WTSF reduces reliance on virgin steel, mitigates waste accumulation, and supports circular economy principles. This research demonstrates that WTSF are an effective, sustainable reinforcement material and provides a framework for their integration into high-performance, eco-efficient concrete design. The results demonstrate the potential of tire-derived steel fibers for use in structural concrete applications where enhanced compressive strength and sustainability are simultaneously required. Bicycle tires and inner tubes constitute a growing waste stream mainly composed of natural rubber, butyl rubber, synthetic elastomers, carbon black, and reinforcing materials. Their multi-material structure and highly crosslinked networks make their recycling challenging, yet efficient recovery is essential for advanced circular economy practices. This review summarizes the current and emerging strategies for recycling bicycle tires and inner tubes. It first outlines the materials and additives present in tire casings and butyl inner tubes, which determine their recycling behavior. Mechanical pre-processing methods, including shredding, grinding, and fiber/steel separation, are presented as essential feedstock preparation steps. Thermochemical approaches, such as pyrolysis and thermolysis, are discussed with emphasis on producing value-added fractions, including pyrolysis oil, recovered carbon black, and fuels. Solvent-based feedstock recycling and chemical dissolution are highlighted as promising routes for selective recovery of rubber polymers and additives. Physical, chemical, and biological devulcanization methods are also reviewed for their potential to restore partial processability to reuse reclaimed rubber. Finally, current and prospective applications of recycled materials are discussed, and key challenges with future research needs are identified, including improving devulcanization efficiency, expanding collection systems, and increasing the value of recovered products. Sustainability concerns over the management and handling of the growing volume of waste tires have necessitated the exploration of potential applications for the reuse and recycling of this resource, as they are categorized as hazardous wastes and are typically incinerated through thermal processing or dumped in landfills, resulting in significant environmental issues. The recycled steel and textile fibers from tires can be incorporated in concrete to assist in mitigating this impending environmental calamity, primarily by enhancing the efficacy of concrete. The present study aims to investigate the effect of using recycled tire steel fibers (RTSF) and recycled tire textile fibers (RTTF) in concrete, as economically viable and environmentally friendly alternatives to commercially available fibers. Although literature on the use of recycled fibers in concrete is available, the research is very limited in terms of their hybrid use and with minimal environmental analysis. Consequently, to address the gaps, this research concentrates on the use of RTSF and RTTF as a hybrid mix in concrete with life cycle assessment (LCA) to balance the mechanical performance and environmental sustainability. The experimental work is formulated to suggest an optimum dose of RTSF and RTTF, as a hybrid mix form, to be incorporated in concrete that imparts sufficient strength and workability. The fibers were integrated with dosages of 0.75%, 1%, and 1.25% for RTSF and 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75% for RTTF, respectively, by volume in non-hybrid form, while in hybrid form, they were reinforced as four different combinations (1%:0.5%, 0.75%, 0.75%, 0.5%, 0.5%:0.5%, and 0.75%:0.25%) by volume of RTSF and RTTF, respectively. Fresh and hardened properties of concrete were tested according to the ASTM standards. The results showed that concrete with hybrid fibers outperformed the concrete with normal individual fibers in both fresh and hardened states tests. The mechanical strength results showed that the synergistic use of RTSF and RTTF can enhance the strength, toughness, ductility, and crack resistance of the concrete. The hybrid mix H1 comprising 1% RTSF and 0.5% RTTF was ascertained as the optimal mix showing the highest mechanical performance with embodied CO2 and energy values only slightly higher than the control mix, while offering the significant sustainability benefit of utilizing recycled fibers. In response to the challenges of low recycling rates of waste tires and their underutilization in loess subgrades, this study systematically investigates the compression deformation characteristics of tire particle (4–6 mm)-modified loess through comprehensive laboratory testing. Using one-dimensional compression tests and cyclic loading–unloading tests, the effects of different tire particle contents (0% to 100%) on pore structure evolution, compression parameters—including the compression coefficient, compression modulus, and volumetric compression coefficient—and deformation mechanisms were thoroughly analyzed. The study reveals critical state characteristics and deformation mechanisms of tire-derived aggregate–loess mixtures (TDA-LMs) and establishes a predictive model for their compression behavior. The research results indicate the following: (1) The compression behavior of TDA-LM exhibits a distinct dosage threshold and stress dependence: the critical blending ratio is 30% under stresses below 100 kPa, increasing to 40% at higher stresses (≥100 kPa); (2) Mixtures with medium to low tire content display strain hardening, whereas pure tire specimens show approximately 10% modulus softening within the 200–300 kPa range. Stress- and content-dependent models for the compression modulus and volumetric compression coefficient were developed with high accuracy (R2 > 0.96); (3) The dominant deformation mechanism shifts from soil skeleton plastic yielding (at tire contents < 40%) to rubber-dominated elastic deformation (at contents > 50%). Over 85% of cumulative deformation occurs during the initial loading phase, indicating that particle–soil interface restructuring primarily takes place early in the loading process. This study provides a theoretical basis and practical design parameters for the application of waste tires in loess subgrade engineering, supporting the sustainable reuse of solid waste in environmentally friendly geotechnical construction. Human population growth and increasing transportation demands have led to rising global tire consumption and associated waste. In response, various material and energy recovery strategies, such as pyrolysis, have been developed to produce high-value-added products such as pyrolysis oils, which can be reused as materials or fuels. However, these oils often contain heteroatom-containing compounds (e.g., nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur) that can hinder their valorization and must therefore be identified and removed. To characterize heteroatomic compounds present in distillation fractions of pyrolysis oils, GC×GC/TOFMS and GC/HRMS were employed. For non-target analysis, data processing parameters were optimized using a Central Composite Design (CCD). The most influential parameters for GC×GC/TOFMS were the minimum number of mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) signals kept in the deconvoluted spectra (minimum stick count) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), while for GC/HRMS, optimization focused on the m/z S/N threshold, peak S/N, and total ion current (TIC). Under optimal conditions, 129 and 92 heteroatomic compounds were identified via GC×GC/TOFMS and GC/HRMS, respectively, within a single distillation fraction, with 57 compounds identified using both techniques. Notably, GC×GC/TOFMS exclusively identified 72 compounds, while there were only 5 unique to GC/HRMS. These results highlight the effectiveness of GC×GC/TOFMS in characterizing heteroatomic compounds in complex mixtures, while also underlining the complementary value of GC/HRMS. Full article

The United States produces approximately 500 million tons of asphalt mixtures annually, while generating vast amounts of waste materials that could be repurposed for sustainable infrastructure. Each year, 1.4 billion gallons of lubricating oils are available for reuse and recycling. Additionally, 280 million tires are discarded, contributing to significant environmental challenges. Given the critical role of the roadway network in economic growth, mobility, and infrastructure sustainability, there is a pressing need for innovative material solutions that integrate recycled materials without compromising performance. This study introduces a Rubberized-Aerogel Composite (RaC), a novel asphalt binder modifier combining crumb rubber, recycled oil, and a silica-based aerogel to enhance the sustainability and durability of asphalt pavements. The research methodology involved blending the RaC with the PG70-10 asphalt binder at a 5:1 ratio and conducting comprehensive laboratory tests on binders and mixtures, including rheology, thermal conductivity (TC), specific heat capacity (Cp), the Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Test (HWTT), and indirect tensile strength (IDT). Pavement performance was simulated using AASHTOWare Pavement ME under hot and cold climates with thin and thick pavement structures. Results showed that RaC-modified binders reduced thermal conductivity by up to 30% and increased specific heat capacity by 15%, improving thermal stability. RaC mixtures exhibited a 50% reduction in rut depth in the HWTT and lower thermal expansion/contraction coefficients. Pavement ME simulations predicted up to 40% less permanent deformation and 60% reduced thermal cracking for RaC mixtures compared to the controls. RaC enhances pavement lifespan, reduces maintenance costs, and promotes environmental sustainability by repurposing waste materials, offering a scalable solution for resilient infrastructure. Waste tire textile fiber (WTTF), a secondary product from the processing of end-of-life tires, is predominantly disposed of through incineration or landfilling—both of which present significant environmental hazards. The incineration process emits large quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs) as well as harmful substances such as dioxins and heavy metals, exacerbating air pollution and contributing to climate change. Conversely, landfilling WTTF results in long-term environmental degradation, as the synthetic fibers are non-biodegradable and can leach pollutants into the surrounding soil and water systems. These detrimental impacts emphasize the pressing need for environmentally sustainable disposal and reuse strategies. We found that 80% of WTTF was used for the production of thermal insulation mats. The other part, i.e., 20% of the raw material, used for the twining, stabilization, and improvement of the properties of the mats, consisted of recycled polyester fiber (RPES), bicomponent polyester fiber (BiPES), and hollow polyester fiber (HPES). The research shows that 80% of WTTF produces a stable filament for sustainable thermal insulating mat formation. The studies on sustainable thermal insulating mats show that the thermal conductivity of the product varies from 0.0412 W/(m∙K) to 0.0338 W/(m∙K). The tensile strength measured parallel to the direction of formation ranges from 5.60 kPa to 13.8 kPa, and, perpendicular to the direction of formation, it ranges from 7.0 kPa to 23 kPa. In addition, the fibers, as well as the finished product, were characterized by low water absorption values, which, depending on the composition, ranged from 1.5% to 4.3%. This research is practically significant because it demonstrates that WTTF can be used to produce insulating materials using non-woven technology. The obtained thermal conductivity values are comparable to those of conventional insulating materials, and the measured mechanical properties meet the requirements for insulating mats. Full article

Used tires (UTs) are a global problem, especially in developing countries due to inadequate management systems. During retreading, when the worn tread is replaced, waste is generated in the form of tire fibers (TFs) and particles, which can be reused as raw materials to produce economically and environmentally low-cost prefabricated elements. Using TFs as a lightweight aggregate in nonstructural geopolymer-based elements is a sustainable valorization option. This study aims to valorize used tires by incorporating them as TFs into lightweight geopolymer mixes and analyzing their physico-mechanical, thermal, and thermography properties for building and civil engineering applications. The geopolymer is produced from a precursor (spent catalyst residue from catalytic cracking, FCC) and an alkaline activator composed of rice husk ash (RHA), sodium hydroxide, and water. The control sample’s (mortar with siliceous sand, CTRLSIL) compressive strength came close to 50 MPa, while the TF mixes ranged from 32 to 3 MPa, which meet the masonry standards. The thermal conductivity and thermography analyses showed that increasing the TF content reduced the heat transmission and achieved a similar performance to expanded-clay concrete and better performance than for conventional concrete. Year by year, more and more plastic is used worldwide. A large part of post-consumer waste is still stored in landfills instead of being reused. The solution to this problem may be recycled materials (recyclates) or biodegradable materials. The method of 3D printing, regarded as a clean processing technology, can significantly contribute to addressing global plastic pollution by utilizing post-consumer recycled polymers to create new components and parts. Therefore, this study focuses on the assessment of various properties and characteristics of 3D-printed compositions based on post-consumer polypropylene (PP) and rubber crumbs, recycled from packages foils and car tires, respectively. Moreover, within this study, we compared the mechanical performance of the injection molding material with the one obtained from 3D printing. A characterization was made considering the thermal and mechanical properties as well as the “print quality” through the microscopic and tomographic analysis of subsequent print passes, the number of free spaces, and imperfections in the polymer melt. Samples obtained using the FDM and injection methods exhibited comparable melting temperatures, while the samples obtained by injection molding exhibited slightly better mechanical performance, higher hardness, and impact strength. Fiber concrete exhibits superior performance in various aspects compared to plain concrete and has been widely researched and applied worldwide. However, many industrially made fibers are expensive, and their cost has to be considered before use; thus, it would be economically valuable to find inexpensive fibers with excellent properties to make fiber concrete. Rural areas have many rich straw resources to be disposed of; at the same time, the rapid development of the automobile industry has introduced a large number of used tires containing steel wire with a very low reuse rate. These two low-cost materials can be processed to make fibers, making the study of mechanical properties regarding their incorporation into concrete practically significant for reducing the cost of fiber concrete. Based on this, a three-factor, three-level orthogonal test was conducted to investigate the effects of different dosages of corn straw fibers and scrap steel fibers, as well as the water–cement ratio, on the mechanical properties of concrete. The optimum level of each factor for blended straw–waste-steel-fiber concrete with different mechanical properties was obtained using the polar and ANOVA methods. It was found that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance of the specimens after fiber dosing were better than those of plain concrete specimens with the same water–cement ratio. The maximum improvement was 14.96% in cubic compressive strength, 42.90% in tensile strength, and 16.30% in flexural strength, while the maximum improvement in impact energy consumption at the final crack was 228.03%. Combined with SEM microanalysis, the two fibers formed a stronger whole with the C-S-H gel. When the specimen was subjected to load, the two fibers were able to withstand part of the load, thus enhancing the load-bearing capacity. Finally, the optimal mix ratio of blended straw–scrap-steel-fiber concrete was determined to be 0.8% corn straw fibers by volume, 0.6% scrap steel fibers by volume, and a 0.45 water–cement ratio by combining the weights of the levels of each factor under its four different mechanical properties through hierarchical analysis. This analysis of mechanical properties provides a reference for practical applications in future projects. Full article

When exposed to sun radiation and heat, asphalt binders age, resulting in reduced flexibility, cracking, and pavement failure. Given the increasing demands of traffic, environmental concerns, and resource scarcity, highway agencies and researchers are actively seeking solutions that meet performance requirements and demonstrate awareness of using non-renewable resources. Epoxy asphalt (EA) promotes sustainability concepts due to its production at significantly lower mixing and compaction temperatures, enhanced durability, improved serviceability, reduced maintenance needs, and successful recycling and reuse in hot asphalt mixtures. Crumb rubber, a widely recognized recycled waste tire material, is considered a viable option for promoting sustainability and enhancing asphalt binder properties. This study aims to enhance the durability and long-term performance of asphalt binders by utilizing sustainable materials. Six types of asphalt binders were employed: PG 67-22 base asphalt binder; styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)-modified PG 76-22 and PG 88-22H (3.5% and 7.0% dosage rates, respectively); a hybrid PG 76-22CS-modified asphalt binder prepared with SBS and crumb rubber modifiers; and 25EAB and 50EAB epoxy-modified asphalt binders prepared at 25 and 50% dosage rates, respectively. Results indicate that the sustainable asphalt binders PG 76-22CS, 25EAB, and 50EAB demonstrated comparable or superior performance compared to SBS-modified asphalt binders, as measured by rutting and fatigue factors. Additionally, epoxy asphalt binders had better anti-aging and cracking resistance, as shown by the outcomes of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and linear amplitude sweep tests, respectively. This study contributes valuable insights into the potential of sustainable materials to enhance the overall performance and resilience of asphalt binders. Full article

In line with circular economy principles, the recycling and reuse of tire rubber waste are considered highly advanced and environmentally friendly waste disposal methods. Through the repurposing of tire rubber waste, the goal is to minimize environmental impact while creating a louvered noise barrier with sound attenuation capabilities. The acoustic properties of the structure made of used tire rubber granulate are investigated in this research. Firstly, nine rubber granulate plates of different fractions, thickness, and density were produced. Two plates with the best results were selected after an impedance tube analysis of their sound absorption (α) and sound transmission loss (DTL). These plates were used as a filler in the structure of the louvers. The efficiency of the structure and its dependence on the tilting angle of the louvers and the number of plates were investigated in a semi-anechoic sound-absorbing chamber. The maximum sound level reduction observed was 17.3 dB (in the 8000 Hz frequency band), and the maximum equivalent sound level loss (LAeq) was 7.3 dBA. Full article

This research focuses on valorising waste burnt tires (BTs) through a two-phase oxidation process, leading to the production of onion-like carbon-based nanostructures. The initial carbonization of BTs yielded activated carbon (AC), denoted as “BTSA”, followed by further oxidation using the modified Hummer’s method to produce onion-like carbon designated as “BTHM”. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements showed 5.49 m2/g, 19.88 m2/g, and 71.08 m2/g for raw BT, BTSA, and BTHM, respectively. Additional surface functionalization oxidations were observed through Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyses. Raman spectroscopy indicated an increased graphitic nature during each oxidation stage. BTHM was assessed in batch adsorption studies for cupric wastewater remediation, revealing a two-phase pseudo-first-order behaviour dominated by mass transfer to BTHM. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu2+ on BTHM was determined as 136.1 mg/g at 25 °C. Langmuir adsorption isotherm best described BTHM at a solution pH of 6, while kinetics studies suggested pseudo-second-order kinetics. Furthermore, BTHM, laden with Cu2+, served as a catalyst in a model coupling reaction of para-idoanisole and phenol, successfully yielding the desired product. This study highlights the promising potential of BTHM for both environmental remediation and catalytic reuse applications to avoid the generation of secondary environmental waste by the spent adsorbent.
