Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. However, this challenge presents an opportunity to do things differently. This paper sets out how, using a design-led and collaborative approach, one can re-imagine the delivery of healthcare itself in a way that will deliver environmental sustainability. The paper presents a series of eight projects at the intersections of design, health and wellbeing, and complex net zero challenges, with an emphasis on inclusive, equitable, and sustainable design-led interventions. This encompasses diverse interventions across and beyond conventional design boundaries such as architecture, product design, and textile design providing insights that demonstrate the impact of design thinking, making, and acting on real-world net zero issues. Addressing such a broad and complex topic requires engagement across a wide range of stakeholders. The work undertaken has been conducted as part of a UK Government-funded Green Transition Ecosystem (GTE) Hub that has allowed multiple academic disciplines, research organisations, regional and local industry, and other public sector stakeholders, to connect with policy makers. Across seven themes, the paper describes how Design HOPES (Healthy Organisations in a Place-based Ecosystem, Scotland), as a design-led GTE Hub, brings in multiple and marginalised perspectives and how its design-led projects as one part of a wider movement for transformational change can re-use, nurture and develop these interventions sustainably. The overarching ambition being, through our collaborative design-led thinking, making, and acting, to build a more equitable and sustainable health and social care system across Scotland. Access to assistive technology (AT) remains a major global challenge, with only 10% of people in need having access to essential devices. Free loan banks of assistive products have emerged as a strategy to promote equitable access, reduce costs, and improve autonomy and quality of life. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the impact of free loaner assistive device programs. A comprehensive search, following PRISMA guidelines, was conducted in Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria, covering diverse populations and study designs. The results suggest a positive influence of these programs on autonomy, social participation, and quality of life, with a high demand for mobility and augmentative communication devices. Programs that incorporated interdisciplinary professional support reported better device-person matching, lower abandonment rates, and higher user satisfaction, as measured by tools such as PIADS, QUEST, and the MPT model. Moreover, loan programs demonstrated economic sustainability through reuse strategies, achieving up to 55% cost reduction. Despite these benefits, challenges remain, including unequal access, financial sustainability, and lack of standardized evaluation tools. Strengthening research, policy support, and professionalized management is essential to ensure the long-term success and scalability of AT loan programs. Full article

According to the latest Verizon DBIR report, credential abuse, including password reuse and human factors in password creation, remains the leading attack vector. It was revealed that most users change their passwords only when they forget them, and 35% of respondents find mandatory password rotation policies inconvenient. These findings highlight the importance of combining technical solutions with user-focused education to strengthen password security. In this research, the “human factor in the creation of usernames and passwords” is considered a vulnerability, as identifying the patterns or rules used by users in password generation can significantly reduce the number of possible combinations that attackers need to try in order to gain access to personal data. The proposed method based on an LSTM model operates at a character level, detecting recurrent structures and generating generalized masks that reflect the most common components in password creation. Open datasets of 31,000 compromised passwords from real-world leaks were used to train the model and it achieved over 90% test accuracy without signs of overfitting. A new method of evaluating the individual password creation habits of users and automatically fetching context-rich keywords from a user’s public web and social media footprint via a keyword-extraction algorithm is developed, and this approach is incorporated into a web application that allows clients to locally fine-tune an LSTM model locally, run it through ONNX, and carry out all inference on-device, ensuring complete data confidentiality and adherence to privacy regulations. The rapid proliferation of electronic waste, driven by the short lifecycle of smartphones and planned obsolescence strategies, presents escalating global environmental challenges. To address these issues from a systems perspective, this study develops an agent-based modeling (ABM) framework that simulates consumer decisions and stakeholder interactions within the smartphone reuse and recycling ecosystem. The model incorporates key behavioral drivers—privacy concerns, moral norms, and financial incentives—to examine how social and economic factors shape consumer behavior. Four primary agent types—consumers, manufacturers, recyclers, and second-hand retailers—are modeled to capture complex feedback and market dynamics. Calibrated using empirical data from Jiangsu Province, China, the simulation reveals a dominant consumer tendency to store obsolete smartphones rather than engage in reuse or formal recycling. However, the introduction of government subsidies significantly shifts behavior, doubling participation in second-hand markets and markedly improving recycling rates. These results highlight the value of integrating behavioral insights into environmental modeling to inform circular economy strategies. By offering a flexible and behaviorally grounded simulation tool, this study supports the design of more effective policies for promoting responsible smartphone disposal and lifecycle extension. This paper presents a study on open energy data in Spain and its contribution to sustainability, analyzing its content and its reuse potential. Since energy plays an important role in the sustainability and economic development of a country or region, energy strategies must be managed through public policies that promote the development of this sector. In this sense, open data is relevant for decision-making in the energy sector, especially in areas such as energy consumption and renewable energy policies. Our research aims to analyze the work of Spain’s autonomous communities in the field of energy information by conducting a population analysis of all datasets tagged in the energy category. After compiling the information and eliminating irrelevant datasets (those that are mislabeled, obsolete, or have a scope less than the level of the autonomous community), it can be seen that the supply is very scarce and that this category is one of the least populated among all existing categories. The typological analysis indicates that information on consumption is the one offering the most datasets, followed, at a short distance, by heterogeneous and difficult-to-classify information and by the set related to energy certificates or audits (the most recurrent, as it is offered only once by the autonomous communities). One of the main findings of the research is the heterogeneity of the initiatives and the significant differences in scores on an indicator created for this purpose. The ranking has taken into account both the existence of information and the quality of reuse, with Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Cantabria being the leaders (with Castilla y León, the performance reaches 60%, so the three remaining communities do not reach 40%). The research concludes with recommendations based on the gaps detected: more data should be published that can drive economic development and environmental sustainability, reduce heterogeneity, and facilitate the use of these data for greater applicability, which will increase the chances that open energy data can contribute more to sustainability. As climate change intensified water scarcity in Southern Europe, tourism-dependent regions such as Portugal’s Algarve faced growing pressure to adapt their water management systems. This study investigated how hotel groups in the Algarve have adopted and communicated water reuse technologies—specifically desalination and greywater recycling—under environmental, institutional, and reputational constraints. A comparative qualitative case study was conducted involving three hotel groups—Vila Vita Parc, Pestana Group, and Vila Galé—selected through purposive sampling based on organizational capacity and technology adoption stage. The analysis was supported by a supplementary mini-case from Mallorca, Spain. Publicly accessible documents, including sustainability reports, media coverage, and policy frameworks, were thematically coded using organizational environmental behavior theory and the OECD Principles on Water Governance. The results demonstrated that (1) higher organizational capacity was associated with greater maturity in water reuse implementation; (2) communication transparency increased alongside technological advancement; and (3) early-stage adopters encountered stronger financial, regulatory, and operational barriers. These findings culminated in the development of the Maturity–Communication–Governance (MCG) Framework, which elucidates how internal resources, stakeholder signaling, and institutional alignment influence sustainable infrastructure uptake. This research offered policy recommendations to scale water reuse in tourism through financial incentives, regulatory simplification, and public–private partnerships. The study contributed to the literature on sustainable tourism and decentralized climate adaptation, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6.4, 12.6, and 13. Full article

Gasification of municipal solid waste and other biogenic residues (e.g., biomass and biowaste) is increasingly recognized as a promising thermochemical pathway for converting non-recyclable fractions into valuable energy carriers, with applications in electricity generation, district heating, hydrogen production, and synthetic fuels. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of major gasification technologies, including fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained flow, plasma, supercritical water, microwave-assisted, high-temperature steam, and rotary kiln systems. Key aspects such as feedstock compatibility, operating parameters, technology readiness level, and integration within circular economy frameworks are critically evaluated. A comparative assessment of incineration and pyrolysis highlights the environmental and energetic advantages of gasification. The valorization pathways for main product (syngas) and by-products (syngas, ash, tar, and biochar) are also explored, emphasizing their reuse in environmental, agricultural, and industrial applications. Despite progress, large-scale adoption in Europe is constrained by economic, legislative, and technical barriers. Future research should prioritize scaling emerging systems, optimizing by-product recovery, and improving integration with carbon capture and circular energy infrastructures. Supported by recent European policy frameworks, gasification is positioned to play a key role in sustainable waste-to-energy strategies, biomass valorization, and the transition to a low-emission economy. This study examines the role of public–private partnerships in promoting the sustainable development of travel destinations through a comparative analysis of two emblematic heritage-based hospitality projects: Dar Tantora in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia, and Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Matera, Italy. These case studies were analysed through both architectural–urban and economic–legal perspectives to highlight how public–private partnership models can support heritage conservation, community engagement, and responsible tourism development. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative indicators—such as projected profitability, tourist volume, and employment—with qualitative insights from interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis reveals that while both models prioritise cultural authenticity and adaptive reuse, they differ significantly in funding structures, legal frameworks, and governance dynamics. Dar Tantora exemplifies a top-down, publicly funded model integrated into Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, whereas Sextantio reflects a bottom-up, private initiative rooted in social enterprise. The findings offer insights into how different public–private partnership configurations can foster sustainable tourism development, depending on local context, institutional frameworks, and strategic goals. The study contributes to the broader discourse on regenerative tourism, architectural conservation, and policy-driven heritage reuse. Full article

Educators must understand current practices and gaps in knowledge regarding environmental sustainability in simulation education to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste while still maintaining fidelity in simulation education. Therefore, a scoping review was conducted to answer the PICO question, “In healthcare institutions and hospitals, what are the environmentally sustainable practices that can be translated into simulation labs as best practice?” Fourteen studies were identified through a search of seven databases, critically appraised, and analyzed. Three key themes emerged: (1) the 5 R’s, (2) getting people motivated, and (3) larger external collaboration. These themes highlight practical strategies and motivational factors for sustainable practices. An expanded 5 R’s framework (reduce, reuse, recycle, research, and rethink) was introduced to guide a holistic approach. The literature highlights the importance of education, stakeholder engagement, and clearly defined standards as key drivers for motivating individuals and teams to engage in sustainable behaviors. These efforts are most effective when supported by interdisciplinary collaboration, regulatory frameworks, national policies, and technological innovation. Sustainability initiatives should extend beyond individual institutions to foster broader systemic change. Full article

Cultural heritage in insular regions faces increasing challenges due to overtourism, seasonal economies, and insufficient protection frameworks. This study investigates the adaptive reuse of Sarakina Mansion, a deteriorated 18th-century estate on the island of Zakynthos, as a model for integrating cultural heritage preservation with sustainable tourism. The research addresses the gap in localized strategies for heritage-led development in the context of islands with overtourism. Through a qualitative case study methodology—including site analysis, archival research, and stakeholder interviews—this paper explores how abandoned cultural assets can be reactivated to foster community engagement and diversify tourism models. Two distinct SWOT analyses were conducted as follows: one at the territorial level (Zakynthos Island) and another focused on the island’s cultural heritage. The findings highlight key obstacles such as environmental degradation and policy fragmentation, but they also reveal opportunities for adaptive reuse grounded in local identity and sustainable practices. The proposed reuse scenario for Sarakina promotes partial structural stabilization and community-driven cultural programming, aiming to create a hybrid open-air cultural hub. This study contributes a replicable framework for reimagining neglected heritage assets in overtourism-affected areas, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Full article

Sustainable Water Resource Management to Achieve Net-Zero Carbon in the Water Industry: A Systematic Review of the Literature

With water scarcity becoming worse, and demand increasing, the urgency for the water industry to hit net-zero carbon is accelerating. Even as a multitude of utilities have pledged to reach net-zero by 2050, advancing beyond the energy–water nexus remains a heavy lift. This paper, using a systematic literature review that complies with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), aims to propose sustainable water resource management (SWRM) strategies that may assist water utilities in decarbonizing their value chains and achieving net-zero carbon. In total, 31 articles were included from SCOPUS, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Springer. The findings show that water utilities are responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and could reduce these emissions by more than 45% by employing a few strategies, including the electrification of transport fleets, the use of renewables, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and energy-efficient technologies. A broad-based case study from Scottish Water shows a 254,000-ton CO2 reduction in the period since 2007, indicative of the potential of these measures. The review concludes that net-zero carbon is feasible through a mix of decarbonization, wastewater reuse, smart systems and policy-led innovation, especially if customized to both large and small utilities. To facilitate a wider and a more scalable transition, research needs to focus on development of low-cost and flexible strategies for underserved utilities. Full article

The transition toward a circular water economy addresses accelerating water scarcity and pollution. A PRISMA-2020 systematic review of 50 peer-reviewed articles (January 2018–April 2024) mapped current technologies and management strategies, seeking patterns, barriers, and critical bottlenecks. Bibliometric analysis revealed the following three dominant patterns: (i) rapid diffusion of membrane bioreactors, constructed wetlands, and advanced oxidation processes; (ii) research geographically concentrated in Asia and the European Union; (iii) industry’s marked preference for by-product valorization. Key barriers—high energy costs, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and low social acceptance—converge as critical constraints during scale-up. The following three practical action lines emerge: (1) adopt progressive tariffs and targeted tax credits that internalize environmental externalities; (2) harmonize water-reuse regulations with comparable circularity metrics; (3) create multi-actor platforms that co-design projects, boosting local legitimacy. These findings provide policymakers and water-sector practitioners with a clear roadmap for accelerating Sustainable Development Goals 6, 9, and 12 through circular, inclusive, low-carbon water systems. Data is the starting point for generating information and knowledge in the decision-making process. Open data, which is information disclosed free of charge through open licenses and reusable formats, has great potential for value creation. Therefore, the objective of this research is to evaluate Spanish autonomous communities’ open data initiatives in a category of information of vital importance: housing. The methodology employed was a population analysis of datasets labeled as housing, followed by a necessary data cleansing process due to the identification of various errors, which reduced the number of labeled datasets from 1000 to 599. Only 12 of the 17 autonomous communities provided this type of information. The analysis of the results reveals that autonomous communities’ approaches to open data initiatives are highly heterogeneous and that the supply is irregular, with the Basque Country accounting for 70% of the datasets considered in the research. The creation of an indicator that equally assesses the existence of information and file formats (breadth and reusability) continues to identify the Basque Country as the undisputed leader, with Catalonia and Cantabria in second and third place, the only autonomous communities to exceed 50 points out of a possible 100. The Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region is one of China’s most water-scarce yet economically vital areas, facing increasing challenges due to climate change and intensive human activities. This study develops an integrated Water–Food–Energy–Ecology (WFEE) simulation and regulation model to assess the system’s stability under coordinated development scenarios and extreme climate stress. A 500-year precipitation series was reconstructed using historical drought and flood records combined with wavelet analysis and machine learning models (Random Forest and Support Vector Regression). Results show that during the reconstructed historical megadrought (1633–1647), with average precipitation anomalies reaching −20% to −27%, leading to a regional water shortage rate of 16.9%, food self-sufficiency as low as 44.7%, and a critical reduction in ecological river discharge. Under future recommended scenario with enhanced water conservation, reclaimed water reuse, and expanded inter-basin transfers, the region could maintain a water shortage rate of 2.6%, achieve 69.3% food self-sufficiency, and support ecological water demand. However, long-term water resource degradation could still reduce food self-sufficiency to 62.9% and ecological outflows by 20%. The findings provide insights into adaptive water management, highlight the vulnerability of highly coupled systems to prolonged droughts, and support regional policy decisions on resilience-oriented water infrastructure planning. Circular economy (CE) is a recently introduced concept by the EU and several national governments that aims to reduce the total resources extracted from the environment and limit waste generated by human activities to achieve human well-being and sustainability. This review aims to bring awareness of heritage sites’ role and significance in reducing carbon footprints as a strategy for applying CE and promoting sustainable urban development. This study adopts a qualitative content analysis methodology, selecting academic literature, international case studies, and policy documents based on their relevance to CE principles and heritage conservation. The approach examines the emergence and dissemination of these concepts through published literature, including professional standards and guidelines for valuing and managing heritage sites. Key themes include adaptive re-use strategies, preventive conservation, and policy integration. A comparative reflection on international case studies was conducted to highlight trends, regional variations, and challenges. This review concludes by identifying research gaps and proposing future directions, reinforcing the value of heritage sites as pivotal assets in advancing CE frameworks. This structured synthesis provides a theoretical and practical contribution to integrating circular economy strategies in heritage conservation. Full article
