This study investigates the subsurface rooting of the Merija anticline in the Missour Basin, Morocco, with a focus on copper mineralization exploration. A sequential geophysical workflow was implemented, combining gravity surveys, electrical resistivity (ER), and induced polarization (IP) methods. The gravity data, acquired along spaced profiles extending from outcropping areas to Quaternary-covered zones, clearly delineated the structural continuity of the anticline beneath the cover. The application of trend filtering in covered areas allowed the removal of regional effects, successfully isolating residual anomalies associated with the buried continuation of the anticline. Interpolated Bouguer anomaly maps highlighted a major regional fault, interpreted as controlling the deep rooting of the anticline. A resistivity profile was then deployed perpendicular to this fault, providing detailed imaging of the anticline’s geometry and lithological contrasts. Complementary IP profiles conducted near the mine site targeted the detection of chargeability anomalies associated with copper mineralization dominated by malachite, confirming the electrical signature of copper mineralization, particularly within the sandstone and conglomerate formations of the Lower Cretaceous. To validate the geophysical interpretations, a drilling campaign was conducted, which confirmed the presence of the identified lithological units and the anticline rooting, as revealed by geophysical data. This approach provides a robust framework for copper exploration in the Merija area and can be adapted to similar geological contexts elsewhere. Full article

This convergent mixed-methods study explores the lived experiences of Black women DEI leaders at predominantly white institutions within the context of an increasingly contentious national discourse surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in higher education. Conducted prior to the 2024 election, a period marked by escalating resistance to DEI efforts, this research explores how America’s racial reckoning influenced institutional DEI initiatives and shaped the realities of those leading this work. Data were collected through a climate survey of 20 DEI administrators and semi-structured interviews with three senior-level Black women DEI leaders. The survey findings suggest that institutional commitments to DEI were largely reactive, emerging as crisis responses to national calls for racial justice. These efforts resulted in the short-term elevation of Black women into leadership roles, often without sustained structural support. The interview data revealed that Black women senior DEI leaders routinely encounter discrimination, marginalization, and the paradox of hypervisibility and invisibility within their roles. This study concludes with implications and suggestions for institutional policy and structural reform aimed at fostering more equitable and sustainable DEI leadership environments. Full article

Purpose: Following George Floyd’s death, the push for law enforcement accountability policies has intensified. Despite robust legislative action, challenges in enacting and implementing meaningful reforms persist. This study analyzes police accountability policies (PAP) in the U.S. from 2020 to 2022, identifying barriers and facilitators through expert perspectives in enforcement oversight, policy advocacy, and community engagement. Methods: The study used a dual approach: analyzing 226 police accountability bills from all 50 U.S. states, D.C., and Puerto Rico via the National Conference of State Legislatures database, and categorizing them into six key areas such as training, technology use, and certification. Additionally, a survey was conducted among experts to identify the challenges and drivers in passing police accountability legislation. Findings: A legislative analysis showed that although 48 states passed police accountability laws, California, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Colorado have made significant strides by passing multiple pieces of legislation aimed at enhancing law enforcement accountability and ensuring better policing practices. The most common policies focused on training and technology, enacted by 16 and 12 states, respectively. However, crucial certification and decertification policies were adopted in just 13 states, highlighting the inconsistent implementation of measures critical for police accountability and transparency. The survey identified several barriers to passing PAP, including inadequate support from local governments (72.7%). Structural exclusion of poor and minority communities from policing resources was also a significant barrier (54.5%). Facilitators included community support (81.8%) and a cultural shift in policing towards viewing officers as “guardians” rather than “warriors” (63.6%). Conclusions: While some progress has been made in passing PAP, considerable gaps remain, particularly in enforcement and comprehensive reform. Resistance from law enforcement institutions, lack of community support, and structural inequalities continue to impede the adoption of effective PAP. Full article

Background/Objectives: Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs is an invaluable intervention in the ongoing efforts to contain the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in low-resource settings. This study evaluates the impact of the Telementoring, Education, and Advocacy Collaboration initiative for Health through Antimicrobial Stewardship (TEACH AMS), which uses the virtual Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) learning model to enhance AMS capacity in Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, which included attendance data collection, facility-level assessments, post-session and follow-up surveys, as well as focus group discussions. Results: Between September 2023 and February 2025, 77 virtual learning sessions were conducted, engaging 2445 unique participants from hospital-based AMS committees and health professionals across the three countries. Participants reported significant knowledge gain, and data showed facility improvements in two core AMS areas, including the implementation of multidisciplinary ward-based interventions/communications and enhanced monitoring of antibiotic resistance patterns. Along those lines, participants reported that the program assisted them in improving prescribing and culture-based treatments, and also evidence-informed antibiotic selection. The evidence of implementing ward-based interventions was further stressed in focus group discussions, as well as other strengthened practices like point-prevalence surveys, and development or revision of stewardship policies. Substantial improvements in microbiology services were also shared by participants, particularly in Malawi. Other practices mentioned were strengthened multidisciplinary communication, infection prevention efforts, and education of patients and the community. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a virtual case-based learning educational intervention, providing structured and tailored AMS capacity building, can drive behavior change and strengthen healthcare systems in low resource settings. Future efforts should aim to scale up the engagements and sustain improvements to further strengthen AMS capacity. Full article

Background/Objectives: Enterococci, particularly Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, are Gram-positive cocci that can cause severe infections in hospitalized patients. The rise of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-variable enterococci (VVE) poses significant challenges in healthcare settings due to their resistance to multiple antibiotics. Methods: We conducted a point prevalence survey (PPS) to assess the prevalence of VRE and VVE colonization in hospitalized patients. Rectal swabs were collected from 160 patients and analyzed using molecular assays (MAs) and culture. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and core-genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) were performed to identify the genetic diversity. Results: Of the 160 rectal swabs collected, 54 (33.7%) tested positive for the vanA and/or vanB genes. Culture-based methods identified 47 positive samples (29.3%); of these, 44 isolates were identified as E. faecium and 3 as E. faecalis. Based on the resistance profiles, 35 isolates (74.5%) were classified as VRE, while 12 (25.5%) were classified as VVE. WGS and cgMLST analyses identified seven clusters of E. faecium, with sequence type (ST) 80 being the most prevalent. Various resistance genes and virulence factors were identified, and this study also highlighted intra- and inter-ward transmission of VRE strains. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the potential for virulence and resistance of both the VRE and VVE strains, and they highlight the importance of effective infection control measures to prevent their spread. VVE in particular should be carefully monitored as they often escape detection. Integrating molecular data with clinical information will hopefully enhance our ability to predict and prevent future VRE infections. Full article

The abandoned goaf resulting from coal resource integration in China poses a significant threat to coal mine safety. The transient electromagnetic method (TEM) has emerged as a crucial technology for detecting goafs in coal mines due to its adaptable equipment and efficient implementation. In recent years, small-loop TEM has demonstrated high resolution and adaptability in challenging terrains with vegetation, such as coal mine ponding areas, karst regions, and reservoir seepage scenarios. By considering the sedimentary characteristics of coal seams and addressing the resistivity changes encountered in single-point inversion, a joint optimization inversion process incorporating lateral weighting factors and vertical roughness constraints has been developed to enhance the connectivity between adjacent survey points and improve the continuity of inversion outcomes. Through an OCCAM inversion approach, the regularization factor is dynamically determined by evaluating the norms of the data objective function and model objective function in each iteration, thereby reducing the reliance of inversion results on the initial model. Using the Xiaolong Coal Mine as a geological context, the impact of lateral and vertical weighting factors on the inversion outcomes of high- and low-resistivity structural models is examined through a control variable method. The analysis reveals that optimal inversion results are achieved with a combination of a lateral weighting factor of 0.5 and a vertical weighting factor of 0.1, ensuring both result continuity and accurate depiction of vertical and lateral electrical interfaces. The practical application of this approach validates its effectiveness, offering theoretical support and technical assurance for old goaf detection in coal mines, thereby holding significant engineering value. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy (VH), like attitudes towards other vaccines, is a critical global public health concern. Despite numerous studies covering psychological, sociodemographic, and other determinants of vaccine acceptance, resistance, and hesitance, few studies have reported these factors among students, particularly in politically unstable settings like Ukraine. This cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study assesses hesitancy towards COVID-19 vaccines, utilizing the 5Cs Model. Among 936 respondents surveyed in 2023, 64% received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine (acceptant), 11% were still considering getting vaccinated (hesitant), and 25% refused vaccination (resistant). Vaccination behavior is significantly associated with the 5Cs. Higher collective responsibility significantly increased acceptance and reduced resistance, while higher constraints lowered the chances of being either acceptant or resistant. Confidence protected against resistance. Complacency, counterintuitively, reduced odds of resistance, pointing to differences between passive hesitancy and active refusal. Male gender and sources of information and misinformation influenced confidence. Collective responsibility was positively associated with official sources and negatively with conspiracy beliefs. Complacency increased with official sources, while constraints and calculation were least explained by predictors. Practical barriers should be tackled through improved accessibility and fostering collective responsibility via targeted communication strategies. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and academic institutions to enhance vaccine uptake among university students, particularly in crisis settings. As a pivotal clean energy source with considerable reserves, geothermal water plays an indispensable role in diminishing reliance on fossil fuels and accomplishing carbon neutrality. This study employed conventional electrical prospecting and radon gas surveys in the Lantian area of Ningdu, aimed at curtailing geothermal development costs by precise targeting of resource locations. The investigations successfully delineated fracture structures within the Lantian region. Distinct anomalies were identified in the electrical profiling along Survey Lines 1, 2, and 4, with the most pronounced features observed on Line 4. Accordingly, characteristic peak anomalies were exhibited by the radon gas measurement profiles S1, S2, and S4 corresponding to Lines 1, 2, and 4, respectively. The synergistic interpretation of resistivity and radon survey data recognized two primary fracture zones: the NE-trending zone F1 and the NEE-trending zone F2. This integrated approach not only ascertained the efficacy of the radon gas measurement, but also lays a robust basis for future geothermal water exploration targeting. Full article

The NW–SE-trending Firenze-Pistoia Basin (FPB) is an intermontane tectonic depression in the Northern Apennines (Italy) bounded to the northeast by a SW-dipping normal fault system. Although it has moderate historical seismicity (maximum estimated Mw 5.5 in 1895), the FPB lacks detailed characterization of its recent tectonic structures, unlike those of nearby basins that have produced Mw > 6 events. This study focuses on the southeastern sector of the basin, including the urban area of Florence, using tectonic geomorphology derived from remote sensing, in particular LiDAR data, field verification, and high-resolution geophysical surveys such as electrical resistivity tomography and seismic reflection profiles. The integration of these techniques enabled interpretation of the subdued and anthropogenically masked tectonic structures, allowing the identification of Holocene activity and significant, although limited, surface vertical offset for three NE–SW-striking normal faults, the Peretola, Scandicci, and Maiano faults. The Scandicci and Maiano faults appear to segment the southeasternmost strand of the master fault of the FPB, the Fiesole Fault, which now shows activity only along isolated segments and cannot be considered a continuous active fault. From empirical relationships, the Scandicci Fault, the most relevant among the three active faults, ~9 km long within the basin and with an approximate Late Quaternary slip rate of ~0.2 mm/year, might source Mw > 5.5 earthquakes. These findings highlight the need to reassess the local seismic hazard for more informed urban planning and for better preservation of the cultural and architectural heritage of Florence and the other artistic towns located in the FPB. This article utilises Max-Neef’s Human Scale Development (HSD) framework (1991) to answer two research questions: what impact does government and community-based social protection (SP) have on UK asylum-seeker wellbeing; how are interactions with all forms of SP, both as giver and receiver, supporting or harming the satisfaction of asylum-seekers’ fundamental human needs at this time? The research study utilised a mixed-methods, collaborative, case study design situated within a refugee and asylum-seeker (RAS) support charity in Southwest England. Methods included peer-led Qualitative Impact Protocol interviews, Photovoice, surveys, and staff interviews. Data were subjected to an inductive, bottom-up process on Causal Map software (version 2, Causal Map Ltd., 39 Apsley Rd., Bath BA1 3LP, UK) and the analysis used the HSD framework. We found eight over-arching themes. The four main needs-violators/destroyers of asylum-seeker wellbeing were dehumanisation, unfreedoms, enforced ignorance, and (re)traumatisation, and the four main needs-satisfiers were common humanity, autonomy and resistance, exerting agency through knowledge exchange, and healing. Five policy and practice-focused bridging satisfiers are recommended to help move individual and collective experience from a negative to a positive state in the research population. Policy and practice should be transparent and evidence-based, efficient and equitable, supportive of participation and productivity, trauma-informed, and multi-agency. Full article

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), i.e., the evolution of microbes to become resistant to chemicals used to control them, is a global public health concern that can make bacterial diseases untreatable. Inputs including antibiotics, metals, and biocides can create an environment in the agrifood chain that selects for AMR. Consumption of food represents a potential exposure route to AMR microbes and AMR genes (ARGs), which may be present in viable bacteria or on free DNA. Ready-to-eat (RTE) foods are of particular interest because they are eaten without further cooking, so AMR bacteria or ARGs that are present may be consumed intact. They also represent varied production systems (fresh produce, cooked meat, dairy, etc.). An evidence gap exists regarding the diversity and consumption of ARGs in RTE food, which this study begins to address. We sampled 1001 RTE products at retail sale in the UK, in proportion to their consumption by the UK population, using National Diet and Nutrition Survey data. Bacterial DNA content of sample extracts was assessed by 16S metabarcoding, and 256 samples were selected for metagenomic sequencing for identification of ARGs based on consumption and likely bacterial DNA content. A total of 477 unique ARGs were identified in the samples, including ARGs that may be involved in resistance to important antibiotics, such as colistin, fluoroquinolones, and carbapenems, although phenotypic AMR was not measured. Based on the incidence of ARGs in food types, ARGs are estimated to be present in a high proportion of average diets. ARGs were detected on almost all RTE food types tested (48 of 52), and some efflux pump genes are consumed in 97% of UK diets. Full article

Diet to Data: Validation of a Bias-Mitigating Nutritional Screener Using Assembly Theory

Background/Objectives: Traditional dietary screeners face significant limitations: they rely on subjective self-reporting, average intake estimates, and are influenced by a participant’s awareness of being observed—each of which can distort results. These factors reduce both accuracy and reproducibility. The Guide Against Age-Related Disease (GARD) addresses these issues by applying Assembly Theory to objectively quantify food and food behavior (FFB) complexity. This study aims to validate the GARD as a structured, bias-resistant tool for dietary assessment in clinical and research settings. Methods: The GARD survey was administered in an internal medicine clinic within a suburban hospital system in the southeastern U.S. The tool assessed six daily eating windows, scoring high-complexity FFBs (e.g., fresh plants, social eating, fasting) as +1 and low-complexity FFBs (e.g., ultra-processed foods, refined ingredients, distracted eating) as –1. To minimize bias, patients were unaware of scoring criteria and reported only what they ate the previous day, avoiding broad averages. A computer algorithm then scored responses based on complexity, independent of dietary guidelines. Internal (face, convergent, and discriminant) validity was assessed using Spearman rho correlations. Results: Face validation showed high inter-rater agreement using predefined Assembly Index (Ai) and Copy Number (Ni) thresholds. Positive correlations were found between high-complexity diets and behaviors (rho = 0.533–0.565, p < 0.001), while opposing constructs showed moderate negative correlations (rho = –0.363 to −0.425, p < 0.05). GARD scores aligned with established diet patterns: Mediterranean diets averaged +22; Standard American Diet averaged −10. Full article

To address the issues of low permeability, clogging susceptibility, and insufficient circumferential bearing capacity of traditional drainage blind pipes behind tunnel linings in water-rich areas, this study proposes a novel curved-mesh circumferential drainage blind pipe specifically designed for such environments. First, through engineering surveys and comparative analysis, the limitations and application demands of conventional circumferential annular drainage blind pipes in highway tunnels were identified. Based on this, the key parameters of the new blind pipe—including material, wall thickness, and aperture size—were determined. Laboratory tests were then conducted to evaluate the performance of the newly developed pipe. Subsequently, the pipe was applied in a real-world tunnel project, where a construction process and an in-service blockage inspection method for circumferential drainage pipes were proposed. Field application results indicate that, compared to commonly used FH50 soft permeable pipes and F100 semi-split spring pipes, the novel curved-mesh drainage blind pipe exhibits superior circumferential load-bearing capacity, anti-clogging performance, and deformation resistance. The proposed structure provides a total permeable area exceeding 17,500 mm2, three to four times larger than that of conventional drainage pipes, effectively meeting the drainage requirements behind tunnel linings in high-water-content zones. The use of four-way connectors enhanced integration with other drainage systems, and inspection of the internal conditions confirmed that the pipe remained free of clogging and deformation. Furthermore, the curved-mesh design offers better conformity with the primary support and demonstrates stronger adaptability to complex installation conditions. Full article

Fusarium head blight in barley (Hordeum vulgare) reduces grain yield and can lead to the accumulation of deoxynivalenol (DON) and nivalenol (NIV) in grains. We surveyed Fusarium species and evaluated DON and NIV concentrations in barley grains in four regions of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in subtropical Brazil. Seven Fusarium species were identified: F. asiaticum, F. avenaceum, F. cortaderiae, F. graminearum, F. gerlachii, F. meridionale and F. poae. DON (0 to 10,200 µg/kg) and NIV (0 to 1630 µg/kg) were detected in 74% and 70% of the samples, respectively, with higher concentrations found in experimental fields. However, in commercial barley fields, most samples fell below 2000 µg/kg of DON, which is the maximum limit allowed by Brazilian legislation for grains intended for processing. The seasonality of temperature and precipitation influenced mycotoxin concentrations. Therefore, the variability of Fusarium species in Rio Grande do Sul and a high incidence of DON and NIV in barley grains highlight the complexity of this pathosystem. This variability of Fusarium species may also influence the effectiveness of measures to control the disease, particularly in relation to genetic resistance and fungicide application. Full article

Self-Perception and Assessment of Antibiotic Therapy Knowledge in Dental Students in Spain: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study

Background: The development of antimicrobial resistance is a major public health issue, in which dentists play a significant role by prescribing 7–11% of worldwide antibiotics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the self-perception and knowledge of antibiotic therapy in fifth-year undergraduate dental students. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study based on the STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines. An electronic survey consisting of 18 questions was conducted with fifth-year students enrolled in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 academic years. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Results: A total of 139 students (76.4%) completed the questionnaire. A total of 71.9% of students considered that they had received adequate education in antibiotic therapy, particularly in Oral Surgery (89.2%) and Periodontics (86.3%). The theoretical classes (3.50 ± 0.98) and practical sessions (3.18 ± 1.29) provided the knowledge that had the greatest influence on their education. They showed high self-confidence in diagnosing an infection (3.49 ± 0.73) and in choosing the appropriate antibiotic and dosage (3.26 ± 0.73). Over 76% of students answered correctly regarding the need for antibiotic prescriptions in various practical scenarios, except in the replantation of avulsed permanent teeth (54%). Conclusions: Dental students’ knowledge of antibiotics should be reinforced, as a high percentage answered correctly regarding the indications for antibiotics in pulpal and periapical diseases, but students performed less well regarding the choice of antibiotic and dosage in patients without sensitivity to β-lactams.
